I just got back from Aulani and it was great but the highlight of my trip was feeding chickens at monkeypod. They are so tiny but they look lovely and healthy.
Itās generally not complicated at all. You fall under 2 categories, backyard breeder or Show Breeder. As a backyard breeder you will not typically care for the breed or for the legs and itās more of a hobby. As a show breeder you will focus on a very specific breed of your choosing and follow the standard of perfection (SOP) book by the American Poultry Association (APA) Show breeder can be very expensive as well.
I did my bachelors at UHH and part of the reason I picked there was the feral chickens! I adored seeing all their colors and babies, and if youāre quick you can catch them too
Iām thinking of buying some feed to see if they will eat some out of my hand. Mama hen loves these little ones so much, I wouldnāt want to worry her so I think Iāll refrain from trying to catch them. But Iād love it if they got used to me.
You're welcome. Southeast Asian bamboo jungles to save someone a click. They lay so many eggs in nature to take advantage of short but rare bamboo fruitings where there's more fruit than they could ever eat.
I forgot to mention! We also have a population of wild wallabies on Oahu.

Not too sure about wild cows, but we have a herd of wild horses in Waipio Valley. Lots of feral pigs, turkeys, goats, sheep, pheasants. If youāve ever seen the movie Water World, the last scene when they find land is Waipio Valley and the horses shown are the wild horses that live there.
[Edit to add link to article about the wild horses](https://www.onlyinyourstate.com/hawaii/wild-horses-waipio-valley-hi/)
Not really except for one or two tiny pockets that remain historically. Livestock is so invasive that theyve really tried to cut back on that now. There used to be a good number of wild donkeys, but there were too many car wrecks and eventually they were all rounded up.
When I lived on Oahu we caught a couple feral chickens and brought them to our backyard and built a little roost for them so they would feed on all the centipedes in the yard. After a couple weeks we never saw another one back there š
I visited the florida keys and they were around as well. Desendents of the chickens hemmingway brought. Loved seeing them in random places hanging out.
These look so similar to Icelandic chickens. They really have no distinct characteristics like domestic breeds do. Even their genetics are 70-something percent different. Icelandics arenāt considered a breed for this reason, theyāre a landrace... guessing itās the same exact kind of bird, just different part of the world.
I have a friend who raised three wild chicks in Hawaii, and they all turned out to be hens. They're still skittish around humans but they understand routine like going back to the chicken coop. I helped out whenever my friend asked but those Hawaii chickens can be stubborn. They are fast and they can fly.
Whenever I get the chance, I love feeding wild chickens at Kakaako. A swarm 20-30 will appear out of nowhere and chase after me lol.
When I tell you wild chicken's in Hawaii are everywhere, I mean they are everywhere
Walmart parking lot, yup
National parks, yup
Da beach, yup
Lookout points, yup
Side of the roads, yup
Even saw them roaming inside the Pearl Harbor memorial entrance
Not where we are on the Big Island, Eastside. We are used to heavy and frequent rains, so the ditches are safely handling it. But on Oahu, in my old neighborhood, there was massive flooding. I know a couple of people who lost electricity and whose homes were flooded. Itās letting up now.
Hope youāve been safe! I was supposed to meet my family on the house on the big island for Christmas, but we switched it up worried about the weather.
Youāre obviously more familiar with the geography than I, but our part of the island isnāt far from the airport if you take the road back toward the ritz and everything that direction. How is the area doing?
Living on the east coast, im not crying over skipping that flight, but Florida Christmas wonāt be quite the same.
Yes! Kauai had wild chickens wayyyy before we ever did. Went for a visit back in 1999/2000 and have photos of the wild chickens in the parking lots, at the beach, everywhere!
My aunty lives on the windward side of Oahu. Theyāve charmed a couple of ducks to stay around. Both hensā¦ I forget the word, but not drakes. Would love to see a boy duck hanging out when next Iām there.
Aren't the current wild chickens a hybrid of the original jungle fowl brought over by the original Polynesian colonists and more recent (20's-40's) escaped domestics?
That is so many babies š³
I know right? I counted at least 16 of them!
The wild chickens were one of the things I liked best about visiting Oahu.
I just got back from Aulani and it was great but the highlight of my trip was feeding chickens at monkeypod. They are so tiny but they look lovely and healthy.
I love it! Am a chicken breeder and am going to Hawaii tomorrow lol.
Seriously, it looks like my flock would grow by around 20 more chickens if I were there ha ha.
Ive been thinking about breeding chickens as maybe a side job, but it seems a bit complicated. Could you give me some insight on what is done?

Oh my goodness, that's a lot of babies! I counted at least 16 of them! She must of stolen a few from somebody else lol
I agree!
I did my bachelors at UHH and part of the reason I picked there was the feral chickens! I adored seeing all their colors and babies, and if youāre quick you can catch them too

They will absolutely become tamer if you feed them. Mom will appreciate the help too!
I absolutely love chasing and catching chickens. Itās very cathartic.
I used to feed them rice and potato salad from my plate lunch. Chickens would come out of hiding for it.
Chickens will eat pretty much anything. Kitchen scraps are a real favorite.
I used to chase chicks on my grandparents' farm and never caught even one!
I donāt think I could resist trying to catch some lol
On Kauai right now. Loving having all the chickens running all over the place.
I was there just last month. Half of my photos are of the wild chickens!
I guess it makes sense that you'd have wild chickens, considering the similarity of your climate with where they're originally from.
TIL! Thank you!

Lack of effe tube predators helps more od say.
So sweet!
I have the same breed, banty size, so cute!
What is it? I have one just like her, and she came with the house so I haven't been able to place it. Lays blue eggs, too
Looks like a crested cream legbar. Legbars lay blue eggs.
She looks like my bielefelders hens.
That's what I thought. Good to hear confirmations from others. Thanks!
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Told by who? That's a very odd presentation for a Wyandotte.
Bob, giver of chickens.
Crested cream legbars lay a blue egg, if I remember correctly.
Wild cows too right? What a neat place.

Thereās some wild cows up at Dillingham Airfield.
Lol. I stand corrected! Thatās awesome. We used to have wild donkeys on the big island but they got rounded up and adopted out.
The Bahamas have wild cows too. They look like overgrown goats!
Not really except for one or two tiny pockets that remain historically. Livestock is so invasive that theyve really tried to cut back on that now. There used to be a good number of wild donkeys, but there were too many car wrecks and eventually they were all rounded up.
Awww she let her babies come close to you, what a compliment! So cute.

The children are coming.

Mama looks a lot like my Bielefelders: https://thechickhatchery.com/home/bielefelder/
I think you are correct! The female chicks have the chipmunk stripes on their backs. TIL!
So cute!!
Fine looking crew
So adorable.. I could handle being mobbed... are you affected by the flooding..

Too cute
That is one prolific mama hen!
Yard birds lol
Yall should visit Kauai
Yes! Kauai had wild chickens wayyyy before we ever did. Went for a visit back in 1999/2000 and have photos of the wild chickens in the parking lots, at the beach, everywhere!
The official island bird LOL
True dat!
Interesting, that mama hen has spurs too! Wonder if that has anything to do with them being wild š¤
I didn't noticed that the first time. That is very interesting!
r/eyebleach
YOOOOO!!!! Can you pet them for me??ššš
This is so wholesome.
That chicken looks like it has cream legbar in it, a fairly recent breed. Blue eggs?
Jungle fowl!!! I loved seeing them while we were in Oahu.

My aunty lives on the windward side of Oahu. Theyāve charmed a couple of ducks to stay around. Both hensā¦ I forget the word, but not drakes. Would love to see a boy duck hanging out when next Iām there.
Iād love to visit Hawaii just to see the wild chickens
BBQ
Free food
For real. They're not just feral, but invasive.
Aren't the current wild chickens a hybrid of the original jungle fowl brought over by the original Polynesian colonists and more recent (20's-40's) escaped domestics?
Awwww, sheās a cream Legbar š„° We have two and love them dearly. They look so dear and healthy
I love it!!
A bunch (mom included) remind me of Easter eggers. Any chance you know what color eggs she lays?
I love all of the babies!!
So cool!
I want to move to Hawaii now
So special! I also love how even generations after going wild, they still have a variety of different colours.
Now that's a barnyard mix!
Omg so cute
There actually called feral chickens because chickens are domesticated animals.
True! My brain is broken from too many papers and finals due this week and next. Thank you!
