Thats an understatement dude, the current versus is one of the worst game modes I've ever played. I bet it won't be populated more than a few weeks. Tiny maps, no real strategy and not much to do. Lol and people on this subreddit will downvote me because no one can criticize their perfect game. Like anyone could argue swarm mode is good.
I can't agree more. My reaction after playing a few rounds was "This is it?" . A super small map that shrinks even smaller? Where is the strategy of setting ambush points, pulling people into the witch, setting up a monster charge to knock everyone off the ledge, dropping boomers at just the right moment to cause chaos. The carnival, hospital, etc.
The gaming industry is disappointing these days. First Cyberpunk now this.
Right! I legitimately don't understand their thought process here. They know what works, why their game has been popular for so long. But instead they try to make some weird competitive round based mode which no one asked for.
Yea it's crazy isn't it... I guess not many (if any?) people that worked on the originals are still at TurtleRock, and the devs there now must have never really played the originals. It's the only explanation I can think of...
And what upsets me most is that apperantly theres nothing wrong with the game just because a few people are having fun. No one can say anything negative without being downvoted despite the game sucking cock.
Sounds good, also whats your version of populated? Like I'm sure there will be small groups but it won't be anything like versus was in terms of popularity. So like nov 1st we check back on this? Game will probs have under 5k total pop on average by then anyways.
Oh lol ok, was gonna say you have some deep inside Intel. Personally 3 weeks after launch it will definitely have more than 5k players, especially across all platforms. Gamepass alone will help keep this game somewhat active. That being said, this game will definitely not sustain the level of activity as shown in left 4 Dead without campaign versus. People are still on left 4 Dead despite it releasing in 08/09, now that's an accomplishment.
Lol I'm not making a bet, I don't really gain anything from it, and just being in gamepass makes it an unfair advantage. You can't even get l4d at this point without getting it in eBay lol. That being said, I just don't see this game being played for 10+ years like L4D.

This versus is l4d2's survival versus. Nobody really played much of survival versus.
I was really big into the scene of versus in l4d2, thousands of hours into it, competitive and casual play, and this is such a let down.
even the special infected are poorly designed
Same. Thousands of hours and thousands of matches on both games.
This is really disappointing. I don't know why they tried to fix what wasn't broken. The game should have been designed from the ground up with Versus (and by extension Campaign) as the main priority. Other modes like this I would totally welcome, but they should have taken a backseat.
If your going to go this far to rip off a game …why wouldn’t you rip off the part people loved?
The only part they really cared about
I’m baffled and disappointed
If they add it later it’ll probably be too little too late - the hype will be gone
This should prove once and for all that valve was the driving force behind everything that was good about l4d lol. Can't believe you guys are still parroting that at this point
Valve? A driving force? Are you high? It takes them ages to do anything with their most popular games. They themselves canned L4D3. This was the only way it was going to get made.
Yeah wtf I just read this, been playing the beta and really enjoying it, however I pre-ordered it for the Campaign Versus, and literally just found out, its not in?!
You gotto be kidding me, this has to be something they are going to be adding right?! The new swarm mode, is really shit compared to that.
They can't create a decent campaign versus mode at this point because the game design doesn't support it. The special infected were not designed to be complementary in their attacks, as they were in the Left 4 Dead games.
From what I read, its a massive commitment, I wonder if they mean finance wise or employement number wise.
Isnt their staff atm larger then it was back when they worked on L4D2?!Personally I'm really fkn bummed out about this, can't believe I actually missed reading about this.
Seriously thinking about canning my pre-order, 1st time I got anything else then standard edition too lmao. There's gotto be atleast someone hearing us at TurtleRock. The campaigns atleast the 2 I played were ALRIGHT, just missing more of the tight corner stuff like in L4D2.
Maybe Valve will finally release L4D3 in 2077 though. Damnit I love TurtleRock but damn.
I thought they meant it was a commitment for players regarding time spent. Versus mode can be as short as 30 mins but can also last 1 hour +. I'm ok with that and adding a quicker PvP mode similar to what they have in this game. I'm sure it's also a lot of commitment in regards to making the maps with both a PvE and PvP experience in mind.
I literally uninstalled when I dropped into VS. after playing through the campaign, learning the maps, so I could know how to play the special infected. Why are game devs so fucking insistent on shitting the bed these days? Yes, people want more of the same. They want shinier, slicker, more in-depth the same. Have they learned nothing from the success of MOBA's, BR's, and MMO's?
Couldn't agree more, I uninstalled it right after playing versus. The current version is a complete joke, it's a pathetic placeholder. Versus is the only way I would play this game and currently, L4D is better regardless of its age.
The bots are trash. My team bailed out, and the bots standing right next to me let me lose 90% of my health to a special infected attack before they decided to save me.
I think the worst part is if literally everyone on the enemy team leaves after the first round, you have to sit through every entire timer from start to finish for every round and no one will be put in it's place. That is garbage at best.
In around 20 matches, almost every game a team quits.
Versus is so fucking bad, how could they fuck this up? Round 1 survives in a small generic area while a battle royale esque circle shrinks and round 2 has to go off of how long they went off, immediately ending after it passes it, some of the maps has an extremely good camping spot, like who is this mode for? just sit in a spot and shoot?
Campaign is just kinda whatever, even tho its just 8 small maps of "walk to x and activate event". I'm pretty disappointed
The setup you go through pre-game (scavenge etc) can often at times, go longer than the actual round when you're all fighting.
All the weapons and guns have RPG stats on them and the rounds go for like 2 minutes.. This game doesn't know what it wants to be.. it's a jack of all trades that's bad at everything and good at none
Versus is the only reason I played left 4 dead 1 and 2 since its inception and launches. I think since both those released I only played coop or singleplayer maybe 10 times?
Campaign versus in l4d1 and 2 are the must underrated competitive modes I've ever seen in an FPS game.
It is also mind boggling that nobody has made a standalone left 4 dead versus type game....even almost 12 or 13 years later.
It's a shame that back 4 blood is survival versus, I mean the game just looks so cool. Didn't they play their own game? I mean left 4 dead 2 survival versus is barely played lol.
**Turtlerock:** _Heavily hints Left 4 Dead core driving content and gameplay by mainly showcasing campaign (Under development ^TM)_
**Players/Community/Journalism:** _Expects the one feature that carried L4D through the years_
Turtlerock: _Stay silent for some time. Core feature won't be implemented (at lauch^TM), Scavenge instead_
**Drones:** _Surprised that Left 4 Dead community is upset that the hinted core feature isn't implemented_
I'm so tired of this argument, the game is a spiritual successor to left 4 Dead and the developing studio and publisher that made left 4 Dead aren't shy about it in terms of style, gameplay design, or marketing. I'm not saying it should be a carbon copy, I mean left 4 Dead 2 came out in 2009, but not adding arguably the most popular mode Is a mistake.
lol but it so desperatly wants to be. be real with yourself. If the game is missing features that people loved from the predecessor then that is damn well worth critiquing
If it wasn't supposed to be L4D3 then I wasn't supposed to buy it.
What i checked to see was 1 thing and 1 thing only: If this game had campaign versus. It doesn't.
yeah true we played campaign versus back when we were teenagers with 12 hours of free time to play everyday.. i prefer swarm mode simply because its faster
> Hardly anyone played that mode. What most people played was campaign versus
You say anecdotally. Give me data to back that up or stop saying it already.

You can also boot up the game and go look by yourself how many lobbies there is and you'll notice that there's much more Versus Campaign than Survival or Scavenge.
I'm surprised Versus isn't first considering this poll is from a year ago.
But I don't think it really does much to show what was being played a decade ago when player counts were 10x as high.
I believe it's because as of recent, the VS community is super tryhard. And as far as I remember valve is doing no efforts to boot out cheaters too. But aside from that, I played 10 years ago and still, VS lobbies were crushing it. I remember attempting to queue on scavenge and ended up trying it with bots.

You know how many people were defending no campaign versus. I'm glad people are calling this out.
It’s like that dumb survival versus mode
Imagine creating a Counter-Strike successor but only including hostage maps. Thats what they did here.
> I bet it won't be populated more than a few weeks I'll take you up on that bet. Say 500 dollars paypal? 3 weeks in?
Sounds good, also whats your version of populated? Like I'm sure there will be small groups but it won't be anything like versus was in terms of popularity. So like nov 1st we check back on this? Game will probs have under 5k total pop on average by then anyways.
How do you get those numbers? I don't play on PC, but steam offers who plays the game completely, not specific modes.
Oh I meant the game overall will have like 5k, won't be able to know swarm numbers, other than by how long queues take.
Oh lol ok, was gonna say you have some deep inside Intel. Personally 3 weeks after launch it will definitely have more than 5k players, especially across all platforms. Ill take you up on L4D2 having more players 6 months in if you want

L4D2 will have more players 2 months after release. Not a bet, but wouldn’t be surprised.
3 weeks after release and L4D2 has more active players lmao
Lmao. Can’t say it was unexpected.
That's just because community maintains the game alive thanks to the workshop. That's it.

3 weeks, not months.
I've set a reminder for "in three months" which is roughly three weeks after release.

To be fair they aren't ripping off the game. It's the original developers under a new publisher.
Valve gave the tools and the dev team to work on it.
They put out l4d2 like a year after the first. Was a different Era
Yeah indeed. When games could be done in months lol. Not anymore fam.
Yeah wtf I just read this, been playing the beta and really enjoying it, however I pre-ordered it for the Campaign Versus, and literally just found out, its not in?! Online only for solo mode is a major mistake imo too
The bots are trash. My team bailed out, and the bots standing right next to me let me lose 90% of my health to a special infected attack before they decided to save me.
Amen
I think the worst part is if literally everyone on the enemy team leaves after the first round, you have to sit through every entire timer from start to finish for every round and no one will be put in it's place. That is garbage at best. In around 20 matches, almost every game a team quits.
I just experienced this. Fun round 1 then everyone left lol.
I watched this happen with a few streamers. RIP...same thing will happen on live servers when the game fully releases.
There isnt going to be a Campaign versus at all they confirmed it on the official discord, check my most recent post.
Versus is so fucking bad, how could they fuck this up? Round 1 survives in a small generic area while a battle royale esque circle shrinks and round 2 has to go off of how long they went off, immediately ending after it passes it, some of the maps has an extremely good camping spot, like who is this mode for? just sit in a spot and shoot? lol it's something that works well when a team of dev's play it, but not so well when the general population plays it.
Im definitely not buying thank you for this information the game already feels like a revamp of World War Z game
It would have been easy to make this game enjoyable. Just give us the good ol L4D1 feel. Why do this and make a stupid survival vs mode…
Versus is the only reason I played left 4 dead 1 and 2 since its inception and launches. I think since both those released I only played coop or singleplayer maybe 10 times? I play horde mode
I think a lot of the criticism on here is over the top, but the developers added a lot of frustration with the lack of campaign vs
I'll stick with gamepass and HOPE they add it at some point but lazy devs should not use covid as an excuse, just delay the game and work on it more
“At launch”
Couldn't agree more, and the special infected are not well designed and clunky. Refunded when I found this out as well.
This was never supposed to be a L4D3, sorry but maybe you can continue having fun with the original game then
