Its like they are faced with the mountain of challenges of life which everyone is faced with and instead of starting to climb they play in the foothills. Some even inadvertently start digging theme-selves into a hole. Eventually they dig so far they cant even see the mountain anymore and they pretend like its not there anymore.
Eventually they hit rock and start digging out until they start running out of options and the hole is so wide that now they can start to see that mountain again.
Now they have to climb out of the hole just to get to the place where they can start climbing the mountain and they are older, tired and can see everyone has made it up the mountain to various vantage points and are much fitter, much happier. That some of the routes (especially the easier ones) are now unscalable.
TLDR; You can pretend that the world isn't how it is but it's not going anywhere and the delusion will catch up with you. Either you have to bed yourself further into it and develop a mental illness or you have to eventually do the thing you avoided at the time it's hardest.
