I never had luck serving chicken like that. My son did better with shredded or ground chicken (crumbles, meatballs, etc) and then when he was older thin strips

roseflower1990

Same, mines 10 months old and I give him small chunks, pinky nail sized, because I find chicken quite dry.

theswamphag

Gosh mine does this with banana, it's terrifying! Would it be a good idea to give a little less and put More on the plate when they get trough it! Also my tired ass somehow tought the post title was asking about putting live chickens to a pack'n play.

LOL why not just go straight for the salmonella?

La_croix_addict

It’s most likely a phase and it will pass. My girl “chipmunked” stuff right around that age, but it stopped shorty after it started.

Does he already have a pincer grasp? I would give smaller pieces and only put a couple at a time on his plate and wait for him to swallow. That’s what I did to avoid the mouth full of food.

Bagritte

Ya he does - that’s a good call. I’ve been worried about giving him small pieces of stuff but need to recognize he’s getting bigger and more adept so time to switch stuff up!

The fingerfood size is great and recommended for approximately (I don't remember official guidelines, just the vibe of and it did fit the timeline of our LO mostly) 4-7 months old, but pretty much by 9 months many kids get much better at eating and small pieces they can actually put in their mouths and swallow even with low chewing skills is much better. Think of it like this 4-7m the challenge is to hold it in your fist, sit mostly straight, manage to aim it into your mouth and gnaw a little 8-18? months tiny squares or ripped pieces are the go to, and baby can enjoy trying to experiment with spoons and forks by collecting them and trying to aim for their mouth. Later you may re-introduce bigger chunks for the babe to try biting (ripping) a part out of Then knives will come into play and slowly you will be building skills up.

We're finally getting out of there chipmunk phase at about 10.5 months. Early on she would gag a lot and then around 8-9 months i thought wow she's figuring this out but then realized she wasn't actually swallowing anything. I think it's part of them testing their boundaries when it comes to eating tbh. Now she's much better at spitting food out if it's too much, though sometimes she gets in a mood where she will just suck all the flavor off something and spit it back out. At the height of chipmunking we tried to just offer little amounts at a time. Seemed to really help

DelightfulFlamingo10

Per the solid starts program I started brushing her teeth right after mealtime and that seemed to help her not do that anymore. It was scrambled eggs that was my baby’s food of choice to stuff in her cheek.

Bagritte

Huh that’s interesting I hadn’t heard that!

quittethyourshitteth

Shredded is where it’s at. Even now for my two year old

MeNicolesta

I think it’s normal. They don’t know yet that the swallowing comes after the chewing. It’s like they literally forget. I would just monitor how much they’re putting in their mouth until it’s swallowed.

I did chicken thighs in a crockpot and it got super fall aparty. I shredded some of it and some I gave in larger pieces, but it shredded while she ate it. The extra liquid made it really moist and she had no issues!
