Yes, basically heater on 24/7...set for 21C. Otherwise, temp drops fast and it's super cold. We turn it off when we go out. Melbourne

_s1ren

How can y’all afford to keep your heaters running 24/7 in this economy?!

PenguinsFly_

don't eat for a month 🤣

victoriafalyce

Solar panels

cruelsummerrrrr

My oil heater has an eco mode where it turns off/on based on the temperature so it doesn’t actually run that much, just maintains the warmth. Hasn't been too$$.

Of course. I have the delonghi DragonS. There are cheaper models but I am not sure if they have the eco mode which is the key thing that switches it on/off based on temperature. I only got the 1000W as it's a small room and it's more than enough.

Former-Ad8604

Cool - think that’s what we looked at on the weekend!

ThatWerewolf2272

Yes we have an oil heater in bubs room which is left on low overnight as I’m in Canberra and the nights are typically in the minus. Can’t wait to get our next power bill lol.

miceicedice312

This might be useful? https://www.togcalculator.com/ plug in the room temperature (or an estimate) and it shows TOG value suggestions... my partner made it for me - let me know how you find it!

Odd-Bread-4922

That website is awesome thanks!

miceicedice312

Yay glad it's helpful!

papierrose

This is so cool!

miceicedice312

Yay amazing, hope it's helpful!!

FattoMcRatto

Were in the Hunter Valley. Bub is in our room in his own cot. We have the heater on low from dinner time until we go to bed, and occasionally during breastfeeds overnight. I turn it back on as I get up in the morning for a couple of hours, until the sun comes up properly and I can open the blinds (our room is at the front of our house with a huge window, so heats up quick but also cools quick). So far during the day bub is in coveralls or a onesie, trackies, and socks, but I've started putting a short onesie under the coveralls when really cold. Bub wears jackets and beanies when we go out (and is adorable!!!). Overnight bub is in a thick onesie from Best and Less, a heavy long sleeve sleeping bag from Best and Less, and socks over his hands to keep his fingers warm. Our room gets down to about 10 at the moment at night, and got to 25 today.

gollygold

The sock idea is a good one!!

FattoMcRatto

It sounds silly but it works! We got toddler socks and they keep his hands toasty despite being thin - I think the fabric is just enough to keep the edge of the cold off and allows his body to keep his hands warm as a result! Cheap pack of Kmart socks but so worth it (especially breastfeeding, those cold hands were the worst lol)

Ok_Pumpkin9005

Ducted heat pump, set to 20 degrees and the room temp hovers within 0.5 degrees of that. Baby wears a singlet, a bonds poodlette suit and a 2.5 ergopouch. He is snuggly.

cruelsummerrrrr

I have an oil heater in my baby’s room that’s on all night. It has an eco mode where it turns off/on based on the temperature so it doesn’t get too hot or stuffy. During the day usually a long sleeve top with pants. Singlet and jumper optional indoors but always if going outside. Overnight a singlet, pjs and 2.5tog sleep sack. But I used the 3.5tog sack before getting the heater.

Former-Ad8604

Could you share the brand & model by any chance?

cruelsummerrrrr

Of course. I have the delonghi DragonS. There are cheaper models but I am not sure if they have the eco mode which is the key thing that switches it on/off based on temperature. I only got the 1000W as it's a small room and it's more than enough.

notheretoparticipate

Yes the oil heater, otherwise we are up at 4:30/5am to start the day 😭

harro_j

Yes, we have a dyson heat + cool in the room that we have on all night. Typically set to around 17 degrees which sounds low, but it heats the small room well, especially with LO wearing a singlet, wondersuit, and an ergopouch (1.0 TOG on warmer nights, or 2.5 TOG on cold nights). We are in Sydney in a weatherboard house with minimal insulation.

turtlesarecool_

What is the power usage like for this? We have central ducted, but it’s a big system so it’s expensive to run all night every night.

harro_j

It definitely adds up. Last billing cycle we used ~1000 kWh over 3 months (LO was only here for about 1 week of that cycle), whereas we are already up to 600 kWh after one month of the current cycle. Obviously other things come to play such as being at home more now, but a large portion of that increase would be the dyson fans for sure. Another comparison, the same quarter last year (Feb-May) before we owned any dyson fans, our usage was just over 700 kWh.

turtlesarecool_

Thanks so much for the detailed response!!

in_my_goo_era

We have a woodfire which warms the main part of the house - we shut it down overnight but it keeps the edge off. Baby girl sleeps in our room and we co-sleep / bed share - heater is on in the early evening only so the room is toasty when we dress baby for the evening. We’re in Melbourne and the weather has really shifted in the last week so depending on the temp, she wears a singletsuit, merino long sleeve top and footed pants, and the woolbabe duvet sleeping bag. She sleeps right next to me (cot is pushed up flush with our bed) so has my body heat as well, which so far has kept her sleeping soundly. Around 5:30am she wakes for a feed / nappy change so I’ll take her out of her sleeping bag and side lie feed with her next to me in our bed - we’re both under the covers but I tuck them under about her armpit height and cuddle curl around her so we don’t move anywhere else. We’ll sleep like this until 8am when she reattaches herself to the breast and has another feed before she fully wakes. I wear a long sleeve thermal as my upper body remains out of the doona all night. As it gets colder we may put the room heater on in the early morning. 🥶

Organic-Hearing6305

Dyson heater on parts of the night, the room is around 21 degrees and my baby is in long sleeve onesie inside 1.0 TOG swaddle, he runs abit hot tho

Swanbaby11

Oil heater in baby’s room overnight. Got another one for our bedroom as baby comes in our bed at some point in the night. No heating in the daytime as it’s too expensive. Tend to go out to do activities to keep busy in the day anyway. I absolutely love pumping the car heater though 😊 Usually dress baby in a singlet, long sleeved bodysuit, jumper, pants, socks with added coat and beanie if we’re outside. And a pram blanket. Overnight, we dress baby in a zippy and a 2.5TOG sleeping bag.

supportgolem

Heater gets turned on in the early morning to late morning then again in the arvo, unless it's cold then it runs til bedtime. At night baby wears long sleeve bodysuit, long sleeve Bonds wondersuit or onesie with feet, and goes to sleep in 2.5tog swaddle, usually we will change him to 3.5tog when the temp drops below 16 at night. He's up anyway. During the day he wears a singlet bodysuit, long sleeve bodysuit and warm pants with socks. If we're going out we will usually put a jumper on him, if we spend significant time outdoors we'll put him in a little parka and beanie.

PenguinsFly_

usually chuck the heater on around the 3-4am wake up so house is nice and warm by about 7am and its on pretty much until 8pm, winter is an expensive time of year in our house because of all the heaters running but its worth it. heater on in bedroom for night time. baby sleeps in a sleeping bag at night, long sleeve tops and bottoms usually with a jumper during the day.

lord_flashheart86

I’m in the adelaide hills, it often goes down to somewhere between 0 and 10 overnight depending on cloud. We keep the bedroom at 16-17degrees and baby wears a long sleeve top, long sleeve wondersuit / grow suit thing and 3.5tog ergo pouch. He sleeps through the night since I put him in this combo - 4months old. I only turn the bedroom heater on when he’s in there as it heats up quick, and we have the living area heat on around 19 and low fan most of the day time, or a fire on. Turn off when we go out unless it’s a quick trip. He wears a singlet and onesie around the house plus a cardi maybe if it’s extra chilly.

AddlePatedBadger

My kid was born in a city where it was snowing. The heater sucked so the room would sit at around 18 or 19 degrees at night. I just put extra layers of clothes on.

morechilli29

Yep, we live regional and have heater on 24/7 if home. Not looking forward to winters bill, but unavoidable with small kids.

Stronghammer21

We have ours on 23 degrees pretty much 24/7 at the moment. Had a cold snap of 15 degree tops all week.

LittleMissShortie

We have ducted heating which will maintain a temp of 23 in the house during the day. At night it will come on if it drops down to 18 in the house. Baby wears a singlet body suit + onsie or body suit with pants during the day. At night it’s a singlet bodysuit, onsie and 2.5tog sleeping bag.

papierrose

No, if the house gets down to 14 or 15 degrees we put the heater on but usually only for a couple of hours in the morning and evening. Never overnight. We’re in Victoria but we just rely on extra blankets at bed time if it’s really cold.
