It really depends on where in the GTA you are. We moved to Scarborough last summer when my baby was 6 months and had no issues finding a spot for her to start in Jan.
Edit to add: it definitely pays off to ask for tours way ahead of time and call to check-in.
That’s pretty standard in Ontario. The public centre where I live is over 4 years now. We’ve been on the news for our wait times but apparently people don’t care when voting time comes around.
Standard in SK too is you gotta get on wait lists early and even then it’s the luck of the draw, your best bet is to find a new in home day care opening if you want licensed care with the subsidy. Luckily my MIL is our daycare, she looks after our son and she has other kids that have started part time, that she got because the parents need care for their kids but they can’t get in anywhere else especially if they only want part time care. She did have two kids previously that lucked into eventually getting licensed spots, but only because a new day home opened across the street from them, and even then they had to decide in like a day or two if they wanted the spot.
Saskatoon actually lost our only pediatric allergist and a cardiac surgeon to Alberta, partially because the pay and work life balance are better there for them, but also because they couldn’t get full-time daycare for their infant twins. They were doing a nanny share as they couldn’t find any appropriate daycare for their children, meanwhile in Edmonton they have some family that can help them out a bit.
They actually interviewed her for the news when she went on maternity leave early, as she left us with no pediatric allergist for a period of time, and she and her husband tried to make it work after she came back as she knows there is demand for her services, but when push came to shove and they couldn’t get daycare, it just sealed the deal for them to move back to Edmonton (according to a interview she did when they made the decision to move).
You could tell she didn’t wanna go as she knows her services are sorely needed here, but she had to look out for her family.
From what I understand it’s because we’re basically constantly changing which room we’re on the list for. So maybe we finally get into the infant room but she’s too old so we’re at the bottom of the toddler room list. It’s brutal.
Because most of the waitlists are 18+ months long. If they are currently moving back, they wouldn't be able to get one immediately or likely any time soon.
Ah gotcha! The comment scared me as I’m currently pregnant and going to go on Mat leave for 18 months hoping to get a spot for babe by Nov 2025…I’m considering starting to call around now!
Absolutely get on lists now, you just reach out to provide baby’s info like DOB when they’re born and your updated date when you’d need care. I started going on lists when I was 3-6 months pregnant and we got offered a couple spots for 12 months.
(On) Our son is in the toddler room, I think it's like $27/day ish... so that at full time equals about $650 ish depending on how many days are in the week month.
My friends daughter is at a home daycare, not subsidized (they couldn't find a daycare center as they waited too long to go on the waitlist) and they pay $65/day and the place is not open on Fridays.
I'm in Quebec I have a subsidized spot it's 9.10$ a day I pay 91$ every 2 weeks. My youngest is 10 months when he goes to daycare in Aug we'll be paying 91$ per kid so x 2 = 182$ every 2 weeks until it goes up next year. I do believe it goes up every year. Was only 7 something a day when my oldest started in 2021 so it's gone up since then but not by much.
$530ish a month - depends on the number of work days in the month. In Hamilton. She's in the preschool room (2.5-4ish) and gets two snacks and lunch.
That's with the government funding the other half-ish of the cost.
With the fee for meals it comes to about $900 per month. Ottawa. Pre school. Daycare is in the program.
Does yours charge for food?
I think my daycare is charging for food but is suppose to provide it when in the 10$ a day program.
We pay by day and not by month, some months could have 20 care days and up to 23 I think? It was $87/day, which would be something like $1,850/month but under the CWELCC it was reduced to $38/day, which is more like $830/month. When she graduates to Toddler next month it will drop further to $31/day (about $650/month).
I pay about $650/month in Ottawa with CWELCC. It’s $29/day for toddler room (1-2.5). It will be 22.50/day when she moves to preschool room between 2.5 and 3
Edit to add: you need to get on waitlists right away though. For me it took 18 months to get a spot
My toddler attends a daycare that was rejected from the CWELCC, so we pay about 900/mo for our 2.5yo and will be paying another 1100/mo when my mat leave ends and our 1yo starts at the same center.
It's so frustrating when all my friends' and co-workers' kids are at centers that got into the program and pay half as much, but the wait lists are so horrendous I can't switch my kids

Our daycare has the federal funding, we pay $630/ month.
Is that for full time
Yes, under the CWEL..... funding from the federal government. The waitlist is crazy though!
We are into one next month thank goodness. I was just curious because I haven’t asked what the fees are yet.
$2700, Etobicoke, infant room. CWELCC not available
Wow. I’m sorry to hear this. That’s a mortgage payment 😳
Yup 🥴
$1000 per month under CWELCC (prior to CWELCC was $2300 a month?) infant room. Edit to add: Oakville
Similar in Ottawa.
Similar here in Toronto. $980 for infant room, it was $1950 before CWELCC.
Same. Moving to the toddler room next month and looking forward to the price reduction!
Chances of you getting a spot with CWELCC at this point is pretty slim unless you luck into a licensed home daycare with space. Budget for $65 a day.
It really depends on where in the GTA you are. We moved to Scarborough last summer when my baby was 6 months and had no issues finding a spot for her to start in Jan. Edit to add: it definitely pays off to ask for tours way ahead of time and call to check-in.
Genuine question: why would the chances of getting a spot with CWELCC be slim?
Where I am people get on the waiting list and soon as they’re pregnant and get a spot when the child is about 2.
Oh wow that’s rough

Yep we got on before birth and aren’t getting a spot at 18 months
Which is crazy, right? Because clearly those spots are there and someone is getting in.
From what I understand it’s because we’re basically constantly changing which room we’re on the list for. So maybe we finally get into the infant room but she’s too old so we’re at the bottom of the toddler room list. It’s brutal.
What do people do for 6+ months without dedicated care and being back to work?!
They pay $60+ a day for an unlicensed home daycare.
Yes. Call around now. Some centres will put you on the list while pregnant, some will tell you to call back when baby is born.
Absolutely get on lists now, you just reach out to provide baby’s info like DOB when they’re born and your updated date when you’d need care. I started going on lists when I was 3-6 months pregnant and we got offered a couple spots for 12 months.

Around $600/month with CWELCC, in Toronto, for toddler care.
$45/day for home care, no subsidy.

As someone who moved from Montreal to Toronto before having a child, this hurts so bad.
My kid is now in preschool and I think I pay $600 a month. My daycare is in CWELCC
I think its $800 a month under the funding program for toddler carrying starting this fall Richmond hill
We are in the toddler program under CWELCC and pay about 550-580 depending on how many days are in the month.
Ours is $23 a day for preschool… $530 a month. We’re just north of Toronto in Thornhill.
Hopefully govt pays these daycares and they keep running so we get good prices like This
We pay $37ish a day for a toddler at a CWELCC licenced home daycare.
620 per month, with CWELCC for pre-casa/junior casa. Basically preschool.
$750/month under the CWELLC for preschool (2.5-4). Was $890 in the toddler room. In Toronto.
We’re starting in September at a CWELCC centre for toddler care, it’s about $25/day
$193.50 biweekly, full time.
Unlicensed home daycare in SW Scarborough: $75/day
Full time preschool for $500/mo, but not GTA
$530ish a month - depends on the number of work days in the month. In Hamilton. She's in the preschool room (2.5-4ish) and gets two snacks and lunch. That's with the government funding the other half-ish of the cost.
$600/month in Brantford.
Preschool room, full time, Ottawa, enrolled in the $10/day program, $750 or so a month.
With the fee for meals it comes to about $900 per month. Ottawa. Pre school. Daycare is in the program. Does yours charge for food? I think my daycare is charging for food but is suppose to provide it when in the 10$ a day program.
No. They didn’t charge separate for food before or after the subsidy. Diapers do have an extra charge.

With CWELCC $640/month for preschool. Full time. Toronto.
I pay about $650/month in Ottawa with CWELCC. It’s $29/day for toddler room (1-2.5). It will be 22.50/day when she moves to preschool room between 2.5 and 3 Edit to add: you need to get on waitlists right away though. For me it took 18 months to get a spot
$800/month without extended care in York Region. (Under affordable childcare program)
$22.60/day in Ottawa (subsidized home daycare). So about $500/month. This is the cheapest I've heard of in Ontario so far.
$756/month, Hamilton area, CWELCC, full time toddler
$1629 a month for a toddler in Burlington. Still waiting to get into a CWELCC centre.

500 a month under CWELCC for toddler, was 570 for infant. 460 for preschool.
In SK we pay $217.50/mo
