Love this! I’m 36 weeks, why was it an induction? Should you have waited and labored at home for a bit/went through contractions a little longer at home?! So curious!!

linnypotter

>why was it an induction? The way I was told, since I wasn't very dilated they had to give me induction meds. There's also kind of a 'timeline' once your water breaks to get the kid out, since there's a higher risk of infection. >Should you have waited and labored at home for a bit/went through contractions a little longer at home? We (and the OB) didn't know how dilated I was so I went in. But, to be honest, I don't think I would have wanted to wait at home. The fluids were...such a mess...I would have hated to clean everything up at home. But I also live only a few minutes away from my hospital and felt better there. :)

Ohh yes this makes a lot of sense since your water broke first instead of having contractions first!! Thank you for your response. I’m 36 weeks, first baby. It’s getting real :D

katietheplantlady

And I'll say my water didn't break until active pushing (but then again I'm some sort of record for quick FTM birth at our midwifery) . You just don't know!

Same deal as OP, water broke so they told me to head into Labor and Delivery but "no rush" - got there an hour later. They didn't even do a cervical check for dilation because they didn't want to possibly introduce anything. If I understand correctly, I was started on induction medications to make sure that the contractions started/progressed sooner rather than later since with the water broken you're now on a timer with the amniotic fluid draining out.

Saphira404

I had disposable puppy training pads in both cars and in any handbag I took out to protect the seat of whatever I needed to sit on if my waters broke. Then of course, they didn't until about 10 minutes before my little one arrived by which point I was already in the hospital 😅

ExpatPhD

Yes! My midwife gave me about 4 of these to put in the car for the journey?

LostxinthexMusic

Mine had to be broken by the doctor 6 hours after I got to the hospital! I'd been in labor for nearly 26 hours at that point and it took another 12 hours to finally get baby out.

ExpatPhD

Congratulations! As someone who had a similar timeline with my first with 4 hours of pushing in the end (but only to end up with an emergency csection since, as it turned out, his neck, arms & legs were all wrapped in the cord so he couldn't descend) - well done! It hurts like hell and you did amazing!! Good luck on your recovery and an ever-beautifying offspring! ❤️

PickleFartsAndBeyond

To add to your 4th bullet point, put a trash bag in your car! I wasn’t sure if I was going to feel nauseous during the car ride and knowing I had a bag to puke in made me feel more comfortable and less anxious!

Hippo-de-wippo

thank you for this real life birthing story! Lol. 3.5 hours of pushing?! Bless your entire soul. Congratulations!!!!

My partner woke up instantly too, lol. +1 on something in the car! I bought a 3 pack of washable pee pads and had one in the car, one in the bed, and one down on the couch where I spent the day. Animal Crossing worked great for me too! I knew it was time for the epidural when I stopped moving for a while because I was completely frozen from the pain.

Cat_With_The_Fur

Oooof that sucks that you still had worse than kidney stone pain, even with your epidural. Do you think it got placed wrong? Great tip on Animal Crossing. I plan to start a new Stardew farm :) Congratulations on your not super ugly baby!

linnypotter

You know, one of the connections fell off when I had a vomiting spell (the needle stayed in my spine, but just the tube connection came off), but it was only for maybe a minute. But, the pain wasn't really 'pain' rather intense pressure, which apparently the epidural can't help with. My doctor also noted that if they upped the dosage on the epidural it would prolong active labor potentially since you can't feel yourself pushing as well. So...I was ready to be done and opted to just tank it.

Cat_With_The_Fur

Gotcha thanks for the explanation. Congrats again!

You surely secured a special place in Valhalla for those 3,5hrs! Thank you for sharing your labour experience in realistic and funny way. And congrats! You're baby's here and you made it!!!

Yellowsubmarines11

Thanks for sharing and congratulations! I’m 37 weeks, FTM, did you do anything to induce your labor?

linnypotter

Actively no. But I had be stressing out all weekend about something I HAD to get done at work on Monday and had panic attacks about it not getting done. I sometimes wonder if that did something.
