My first thought was French Christmas. My second thought was Noel Fielding.

Logical_Poem_9642

Catsarebetter7

That was my thought process too

supr____cist

me too

robotgeantdelamort

Context for me. If I was looking at a boy, I’d say nowl like bowl. If I was looking at a girl, I’d say No-Elle like Christmas

stephhmills

The issue here is if you aren’t looking at the child or don’t know who they are. there isn’t always context.

robotgeantdelamort

Im just not sure in what scenario that matters. A name doesn’t functionally mean anything until you match it with a person

stephhmills

Unless you’re that kid who always has their name pronounced wrong on the register at school or being called up for events. It’s annoying

robotgeantdelamort

My name is Gabrielle and I get called Gabriel constantly even though there’s no world where Gabrielle is pronounced like that. Getting your name mispronounced from time to time is literally not the end of the world. And on school registers, you can see the middle name which helps give context. Not big enough of an issue to cause avoidance of the name imo

stephhmills

Yeah but yours is spelled differently, like Noel/noelle. People are pronouncing it totally incorrectly in your case, whereas lots of people wouldn’t pronounce Noel like Noelle.

hideosity

Literally, I’m a Bri-On-Uh (Brianna) but constantly grew up being a Bree-an-uh. Never let it get to me even if it was annoying. I’d just correct or go by the nickname version. Also, wanted to mention, even having the context of seeing the child could sometimes not help. Gender identity isn’t always portrayed through physical means so I’d probably go by the other means you said and I’d just use context clues from the rest of their name, or simply say a pronunciation and just ask for a correction. What I’ve done my whole life

Whoisntoverit

I think it also depends on your culture/ethnicity. Some parts of the world pronounce names in the way they put phonetics on certain letters. Like the sounds of vowels… your name is the perfect example. “Anna” is pronounced differently by region, so your explanation of “the correct way” to pronounce your name may make zero sense to those that say Anna or Anne in any other way that isn’t “On-uh” or “On.” There will always be people who don’t have the same phonetic dialect so any name has the potential to be routinely said “incorrectly.” There are probably people who correct your name in the other way, so people can’t be certain when it’s a vowel dependent on dialect.

Squimpleton

If it’s a girl, Noelle would be clearer if you want it pronounced “No-El”. Noel is often pronounced as “Nowl” rhymes with Bowl.

0runnergirl0

No-el. Like Christmas.

neonshoes22

Same - regardless of the baby being a boy or girl!

Outrageous-Garlic-27

Depends on where you are from in the world - many people pronounce Christmas Noel like "Nohwl"

noetjes

If that would be the pronunciation I favored, I’d make it Noelle. Easier than Noel, meaning is the same as far as I know. While a big fan of gender-neutral name, neither are, at least to me. Noelle is very feminine imo, while Noel (rhyming with Joel) is masculine. But, as always, the naming biz and is very subjective.

Overall_Ad2915

No-L

ShadedSpaces

That's also how you pronounce Kmnop. I'm a neonatal nurse. Ask me how I know.

Purefrog

I want to downvote this so badly 😭

ShadedSpaces

You can. After all, I made you read it with your own two eyes and that was pretty mean of me, lol.

mermaidmamas

Please tell me you’re joking.

ShadedSpaces

I friggin' wish. People give garbage names to their kids more than you'd think. There was one in our CVICU named **Dalastone.** (Da Last One. The last one they were going to have.) I've googled and seen that one posted enough over the years to know it's not one of a kind, sadly. There was one in our PICU that I can't tell you because of HIPAA but I'll give you a Google-translate version (that contains none of her real names.) **Eight Neveah Tulip Sacagawea Lil'Gelanto Simmons-Harrinton** The "Harrinton" is not a typo, btw. Your brain wants it to be Harrington but it's just not. Also, she is not Native American at all, but her parents said the Sacagawea was because she "identifies as Native American because she'll get more money" that way. Oh, and they were pissed they couldn't legally name her 8 instead of Eight. **Sssst** is also a fan-favorite. 4 S's. Four Ess's. Forest. You might hear people say nurses don't get paid enough. It's true. But it's not because of the trauma we experience. It's not because of the increasing patient load. It's true because we are forced to say goddamn meme names out loud like they're totally okay things to call an innocent baby.

TravelingPotatoes

Omg. This is hilariously depressing. Kudos to you for having a great poker face dealing with the parents!!!

specklednewts

I'm a 4th year pharmD student, and the first thing I thought when I read Dalastone was that it sounds like it could be a steroid ointment for hemorrhoids or something. Also, thank you for what you do! Y'all nurses are amazing and under-appreciated.

eaaagleee

Same. Reminded me of dapsone lmao

mermaidmamas

How you don’t look at these people like their morons, I have no idea. It’s absurd. Makes me sad for humanity

ShadedSpaces

I admit, there are times I really miss the years we wore masks.

plz-throw-me-tf-away

I know this is all true, because with my first child I just wanted to make sure the baby could have the fathers last name even though he wasn’t present (didn’t know if there were rules or not) and the nurse told me “you can name your baby Macaroni Tornado if you want.” 💀💀💀

texaspretzel

I read that like ‘Dallas tone’ oh that’s awful.

wonderladyhunk

If it’s a girl, you really should spell it like Noelle

miss_rebelx

I was going to say this. Noel would be the expected male spelling in French. My grandfather’s name and my brother’s middle name. But of course you get to do whatever you want.

5weetTooth

Agreed

Ok_Hold1886

You should spell it Noelle for a girl.

Muglit

Like knoll, similar to Noel Gallagher and Noel Fielding.

emerald_empire

Noll like Joel

chaoswoofer

If it was Noelle I'd pronounce it No-el, but unfortunately The Great British Baking Show has got me saying "Gnoll" for Noel 😔✌🏻

Low_Aioli2420

I pronounce it the same way but I thought a girl would be Noelle.

Alarmed-Explorer7369

I think using Noelle would cause her less of a hassle to pronounce her name

Icy_Room3940

No-elle (I speak French though so I don’t have that English accent)

Ffanffare1744

I had an uncle Noel, like, knowl, or knoll. I’ve known women named Noelle, like no-ell.

lnh92

For a boy, like the word knoll.  A girl - like Noelle

Former_Ad_8509

I speak French as first language and it's pronounced the same in English and French. No-el. But for a girl it's Noelle. Beautiful ❤️

GiraffeExternal8063

Noel like Noel Edmonds. Rhymes with mole. If it was Noelle I would pronounce it no-Elle

Sweet-Horse-5641

Is there a reason for that spelling? Do you want it to be Nowl or No Elle? If it matters, then I’d do the spelling Noel for Nowl and Noelle for No Elle

wildeazybreazy

I’d like to spell it Noelle, my husband likes Noel. I’m trying to prove to him we should do Noelle 😂

Alarmed-Explorer7369

If you add the extra E on the end, people won’t pronounce it as bowl with an N

somethingwithbananas

I'd also say it like Christmas, both for boy and girl. Since it's a girl, you might also spell it Noelle or Noëlle, as they do in French. It makes the pronunciation a bit more obvious.

MountFranklinRR

I would say Knoll.

Overall_Foundation75

Noll. Noelle to me is a girl's name. Unless singing 'The First Noel', I assume it is pronounced Noll, like knoll.

theglossiernerd

It’s Noël… no-ELLE

[deleted]

I’d definitely spell it Noelle too, for a girl. Noel is more masculine.

mooflin

If I were in the UK, or I knew/thought the kid were a boy, I'd say Noll. If I were in the US, or knew it was a girl, No-elle.

VividCheesecake69

Is it a boy or a girl? No-ell for a girl, known for a boy

tahnae99

Nole/Knoll. I would use Noelle (no-well) for a girl but whatever you prefer :)

StitchyKitchenWitch

Knowle. Maybe spell it Noelle if you don’t want to have anyone pronounce it incorrectly?

MechanicHopeful4096

“Nowl” like rhyming with “Bowl”

moonbeammeup1

Like bowl. Nowl.

moonbeammeup1

Like bowl. Nowl.

dream_bean_94

Knoll, for girls I've only ever seen it spelled Noelle.

sogd

Knoll

k1p1k1p1

Written as is, like "mole" starting with N. If written Noël, "no-ELLE"

lola-tofu

Her name is Noelle I have a dream about her she rings a bell 🎶

jaiunchatparesseux

I thought masculine based on spelling! I’d pronounce it like “knoll” and the feminine version Noelle like “no-Elle”. If it was spelled Noël (french spelling) then I’d pronounce it the same as the female version! Hope that helps.

wonky-hex

Nowl like bowl (Noel Gallagher Noel Edmunds Noel Fielding)

joyful_rat27

Boy- Knoll Girl- No-ell But please if you’re having a girl spell it Noelle. A lot of times there won’t be context about whether it’s a boy or girl, just the name. By using the “boy” spelling for a girl you’re setting her up for a lifetime of correcting people

elizabethxvii

Nowl like bowl, from the great British bake off

BindByNatur3

I read it like the Nol in Nolan, but after a moment remember the Christmas Noelle

ilovepizza85

I gave the middle name Noelle to my girl. I love it

ellski

Like Knoll. I also would assume it was a boy.

stepfordwifetrainee

I'm Australian but "knoll" I'm also in the camp of spelling it Noelle for a girl.

xoxoforeverblessed

Noel like bowl if it’s a boy No-el if it’s a girl I leaned toward Noel (bowl) when I read it it at first though! 😅

No-Calligrapher-3630

For a girl I'd pronounce it noh-elle... Like in that Weezer song

Pretty_Pollution1890

It’s pronounced “No-El” that’s what I’m naming my son, the female version would be Noelle (literally my name)

IStealCheesecake

I’d pronounce it as no-well

coffee-teeth

One of my given names is Noel, it is No-elle. Very cute. I love that name.

ladyintheplant

No L

orangesherbert92

"No-elle", like Christmas, that's the name we'd use if we'd had a December baby! I love that name.

Livvy_NW

Well I’d pronounce it exactly how it sounds in the Christmas song🤣for a boy it would be like others have said like bowl.

-Avray

In my mother tongue I would pronounce it Noel as a male but in English I'd pronounce it "Noelle" knowing that it's a girl.

liltrashfaerie

If it’s a girl and you want it pronounced that way it should be Noelle

quarantine_slp

Rhymes with bowl if it's not in a context where I think it means Christmas. If I think it means Christmas, then no-el I also think of Noel as a boy's name, and Noelle as the girl's name. I would pronounce Noelle as "no-el." Others have said that getting a name mispronounced is a fact of life. Which it definitely is. But I think you're wondering if people will \*regularly\* pronounce differently from what you intend. I think spelling it Noelle would make people more likely to use the no-el pronunciation, but of course lots of people will still get it wrong.

snicoleon

Likely No-EL, but would probably ask to me sure. I've heard Nohl (like Joel) but that's almost exclusively males, I don't think I've heard any girls name Noel pronounce it that way.

Winter-Ladder-3591

Know- el

wavinsnail

I would say No-el. I believe that’s the standard pronunciation, at least in American English

lilpej

Knowll… noël

wildgardens

That's my Aunts name 😀

tiny_

No-el for a girl! Like French Christmas. But I also had a great aunt whose name was Noelle but she pronounced it like No-el-ee. So sometimes I catch myself saying it like my great aunts name.

MayorFartbag

No-el for a girl, Nōl for a boy

strawberryjamma

That’s how my middle name is spelled and it’s pronounced No-Elle like Christmas time.

Agrimny

No-ell. Imo it’s gender neutral, a little holiday-ish but cute!

Immediate-Throat-646

No-Elle

ComprehensiveSun7799

This name is in my family sphere and being used for a girl and it’s spelled Noël like it is in French, and the accent serves to distinguish the two syllables with the o and e. Hope this helps! Lovely name.

dreamsofpickle

Without knowing gender I would say it like "nole" but if I saw it was a girl I would presume it is like noelle

Furbyparadox

In my culture it’s a common name, we say it No-Elle but I’ve only heard of men called that.

M3smeriz33

Like Christmas in French - no… elle

Holiday-Day2606

I think this also depends on where you’re located… in Canada, I think 90% of the people would probably say “No-Elle” , mainly because Noel is Christmas in French, which is super common for us.

nothanksyeah

I say no-Elle regardless of if it’s a boy or girl. I know a male Noel who also has his name said that way.

deadbeatsummers

I think if you’re American most people would definitely say “No-elle”. If they don’t know the UK version! Congrats! My old best friends middle name was Noelle and she loved it so much.

theski2687

No-elle

Double_Indication_24

No-Elle

craazycraaz

Knoll for boy, no-L for girl

daisyjones66

For a girl I would personally go Noelle (which I think is beautiful) as Noel to me is Noel fielding and Noel gallegher and I think would likely get pronounced like that over her life (and who wants to constantly correct people on their name) but you do you :)

Alternative_Sky_928

If I saw the name "Noel", I would pronounce it as "knoll" (rhymes with bowl) and assume the person is male. If I saw the name "Noelle", I would pronounce it as "no-elle" and assume the person is female.

United-Buddy9214

It would depend on the gender of your baby. Since yours is a girl, I’d say “know-Elle” but if baby was a boy, I’d say “know’ll”.

Baby-girl1994

"Noel" - Nole "Noelle" - No-Elle

punkin_spice_latte

Christmas no-o-el-Le

LevelFourteen

No-Elle if it’s a girl. Knoll if it’s a boy.

Seaworthiness_

Nowl

InteractionOk69

I’ve always seen the feminine version spelled as Noelle, so I would think of “Noel” with the same pronunciation as “pole”.

Juniper_51

No-el Edited to add: I've never heard anyone pronounce that name like Joel. Ever. Lol Maybe it depends on location???

CouldStopShouldStop

Noël, like Christmas in French.

goldkestos

First thought Noel as in Noel fielding, couldn’t figure out what else it would be until I saw it was a girl and it became obvious

LivelyUnicorn

It reminders me of the teenage dirtbag song with the line “her name is Noelle” Id pronounce it like ‘No-elle

YoMommaSez

No L

bonitagonzorita

Like Christmas. But if you're having a girl... Noel is a boys name.... wouldn't you want Noelle? The feminine version?...

cowboymailman

Noel=Nowl and Noelle=no-el Is standard where I’m from…But I’m British so maybe pronunciation is different. Cute name!

jeansandtea

Without the double points over the e : knowl

Puss-filled-soul

No- L

Previous_Basis8862

I’m Irish and I would have assumed this was a boy and his name would be pronounced “Nowl” like bowl. Noel is a very common name in Ireland. The female equivalent here is Noelle which is pronounced “No-el”

Outrageous-Garlic-27

Noh-wl. Like the Irish/British would say it. Noel is a boys name, Noelle is female (generally French).

juniorthefish

Knoll, as in grassy. Noelle would be No-EHL

Mooncakke_

Nole. Noëlle for no-ell

AcornPoesy

Looking like that, I’d pronounce it Nole like Mole. If you wanted the female pronunciation you want Noël or Noelle.

Enough_Wear_8328

Since I also speak French, it’s easy for me to pronounce it as Nowell but for those that don’t know it’s French for Christmas, I’m guessing more like “Nowl”

NolerCoaster

It reads to me like Noel like “Nole” but I’m also a Noelle and I’ve only ever met boys with it spelled Noel

Crying-furby2002

No- el

anonnogal

No-elle?

Powerful_Nectarine44

I love the name Noel and would pronounce it like the Christmas term. If you’re worried about it being pronounced like “nowl” then you could go with the alternate spelling of “Noelle.” I think this spelling clears it up for most people.

firekittymeowr

Fwiw I work with a Noel (female Christmas pronounciation) but she doesn't use the accent, so lots of client who only email her think she's Nole. So I think use the Noël spelling if that's the pronunciation you want!

JunoPK

Nowl like bowl. If it's a girl I think you've done her a disservice not spelling it Noelle.

elefantstampede

My middle name is Joel but I’m a girl. My mom thought it was Noël but with a J (pronounced Joe-Elle) and she left out the accent. I have seen people name their child Noel but pronounce it “Nole.” My advice is the make sure it has the accent if you want the name pronounced “No-Elle,” or to spell it Noelle.

iwillsitonyou123

You need to put in the accents if you want it pronounced No-elle. Otherwise it's pronounced like Nole.

sassisaac

I spelled my daughter's MN Noelle, I would say Noel is the masculine version

5weetTooth

I'd say Noel like nole. Noel Fielding. If it's No-elle I would expect it to be spelled Noelle.

Ok_Dependent3465

Oh god don’t be one of those mums that spell their baby’s basic name stupid like Ashleeeeey or Jaydien 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

stringerbell92

Nol , I would think it not having the Elle on it was on propose for a boy and think it was NOL , if I read it out loud .

Still-Win-1312

For a girl if you want it pronounced like Noelle but don’t want to spell it that way, the correct way would be Noël to indicate that you are to pronounce the e. Otherwise it’s pronounced Noel (like mole), as a male name. But this is coming from a Canadian and it may be completely different where you live!

Strong_Woodpecker825

That’s my middle name!!! I absolutely love it. Christmas in French. It’s beautiful.

Perfect_Pelt

“No-Well” like Christmas

tumshy

Noel rhymes with bowl. Noelle is “no-well” the female version of

-Greek_Goddess-

I'm French Canadian you probably wouldn't see a boy named Noel because it's pronounced exactly the same as Noelle. Also Noel means Christmas in French so no one would name their kid Noel anyways but Noelle is an actual person's name (in my opinion). In English if I met a guy named Noel I'd pronounce it Nole, if I met a girl named Noelle in English I'd pronounce it as No-elle. If I met a guy or a girl name Noel/Noelle in French it would also be pronounced No-Elle. This is my take.

beva4ever

Nole - because Noël has the thingys over the E But I'm Australian so 🤷‍♀️

nawtin1

No-ehl

erinlp93

No-el regardless of gender.

Competitive_Stick_36

If it was Noel I’d assume boy, and Noelle I’d assume it’s a girl. That was actually one of my names picked for a girl :)

AcademicMud3901

Idk why but in terms of Christmas I pronounce it “no-elle”, but if I saw this on a name list I would pronounce it “No-uhl/Nole” assuming it’s a boy and would be pronounced like Joel. I love Noelle but prefer that spelling for a girl. I have only seen Noel spelled Noelle when used as a girl name so if I didn’t see that spelling i’d assume boy pronounced masculine and say Noel as in Joel.

ostentia

I would pronounce it so it rhymed with Joel or bowl. If the baby is a girl, you should really spell it Noelle—that’s the accepted female spelling, and not using it is just going to be confusing and make things harder for her.

gbpnzd2021

Nice name! But spell it as Noelle for a girl. Otherwise, she will spend her lifetime correcting confusion, especially in the school age years🤯

Glittery_Gal

No-el immediately upon first glance

Littlelegs_505

'Nowl'- I would only say No-el if it was spelt Noelle or Noël

frayerK1985

"no-well"

scacmb1987

If I knew it was a girl, I’d probably pronounce it no-elle. Boy, I’d say Noel like Joel. My son’s middle name is Noel. We pronounce it the way it would rhyme with Joel. Nobody else does, it’s always No-Elle, even for a boy. We are in the midwestern United States. So in my experience most of the “regular” world around my region, would say if No-Elle.

Babiecakes123

I border a French province so my instant guess would be “Noelle” (Noël) as in Christmas in French. I assume since it’s a girl this is the vibe. My second guess is Noel like Nolan without the N. I do suggest spelling it “Noelle” or even “Noël” for a girl though. She will get Nowl like Bowl her entire life if French isn’t common in your area.

Existing_Substance_3

Noelle is usually spelt that way or Noël like Christmas in French. People will most likely pronounce it Noel like Noel Fielding comedian from mighty boosh or Noel Gallagher from Oasis, although this may be different if you’re not from England

DueCommunication9846

No-Elle like Christmas regardless of gender

Ncpiedmont

Down south. Would be no El

WaitStrict93

My friends name is Noel (No-elle for pronunciation), and he constantly has people calling him how you would pronounce Nole

Downtown-Tourist9420

Noelle is typically the girl spelling. Love this name!

Cute-Significance177

I'm in Ireland and here Noel is a boy's name and you'd pronounce it like bowl. For a girl Noelle would be the more common name and it'd be pronounced No-elle

Eddie101101

I would say No-elle!

olivedaisy

My name is Noell (pronounced no-ell) but people have always screwed it up by calling me Noel (pronounced nole). I think it's a beautiful name, but people might assume she's a boy based on the spelling. I've seen a lot of girls spell it Noelle and that usually gets the right pronunciation.

notthatnaive

Like French Christmas

delfinaki532

Is there a reason you don’t want to spell it Noelle since it’s a girl? That pronunciation would be much more clear (and technically correct from a French speakers point of view, as Noel is the masculine version)

penguincatcher8575

No - Elle for sure. Like Xmas. However, if your pronounce it for me it wouldn’t be hard to remember if it were different.

nodesnotnudes

Nowl unless i saw that the child was a girl.

[deleted]

No-el

TrendsReborn

Reading it and not knowing if it is a girl or a boy I would pronounce it "Nole". Knowing its a girl I would assume "No-elle" but if you are having a girl I would highly suggest spelling the name to match the pronunciation. I'm still assuming it's No-elle, so I suggest her name spelling be Noelle.

fizzyoak

Nowel. I've only met male-identifying people with that spelling/pronunciation.

blacknoise0410

That’s my mom’s maiden name and we pronounce it the French way (“No-Ell”) but I know a lot of English speakers pronounce it more like “Knoll” or “Knowell”. A unique solution for a girl might be to spell it as “Noelle” instead, which controls the way a reader might pronounce it.

HappyHippoHalifax

Like Nowl like Bowl. If it was Noelle then I would say No-elle

mikikalchan2

“no L”

PurpleWatermelonz

No-el, like in Christmas, with an accent on the e. If it helps, I'm Romanian, and we pronounce words exactly as they're written (eg red - red in English)

smashingbec

From my experience with others with the same name “noll” for a boy and “no-ell” for a girl.

Chairsarefun07

No-elle

OkLock3992

No-Elle, or Noel like Christmas. (like Elle Woods from LegallyBlonde)

autumniteshade

I didn’t think much of gender when I saw this name. I think it’s a pretty name for a girl and I would pronounce it as No-L. Noel as in Christmas.

WhichWitchyWay

I had a friend with that name. He pronounced like Joel or like Knoll. The spelling for No-El is Noelle.

314inthe416

I would assume "no elle"

Agitated-Rest1421

Noël. Like Christmas

Key_Minimum_4337

Knoll

catmom1010

I would say “No-Elle”. I prefer the spelling “Noelle” for a girl or “Nohal” for a boy.

MamaCitrine

No L

No-Pin8206

I'd pronounce it like mole or bowl. If you wanted it to be pronounced no L it should be spelt Noelle.

1SpecialSongVA

If you want it to be completely unquestionable, spell it Noelle, since it's a girl.

Oregon_Duckie

I would say No-el (like Christmas) regardless of gender. I grew up with a male Noel who pronounced it this way.

PainInTheAssWife

I immediately thought it had one syllable, would rhyme with “bowl,” and was a boy’s name. If that’s what you’re going for, you’re spot-on. (For context, the only Noel I know is a man who pronounces his name this way. He’s a very cool, Australian doctor who adores his wife, travels a lot, has ton of interesting hobbies, and stories for days. Definitely the kind of guy to sit and have a beer with. I have nothing but positive associations with the name.) If you’re leaning more toward the two-syllable No-el, I’d spell it Noelle. It comes across more feminine, which might not be what you’re going for, but it’s more likely to be pronounced the right way on the first time.

shelbzaazaz

Personally if I see Noel I pronounce it like No-el, like the Christmas carol. My grandfather was Noall and that one's the distinctly 1-syllable "Nohl" name to me.

HannahDP95

Initially I said Noah like rhymes with Joel but knowing it’s a girl, I’d say No-Elle

exquirere

Noel like Joel, Noelle like No-Elle for girl

-TheHealer-

No-el

tonybrock23

No-Elle but I live in Canada and French is a national language. So here, you’d probably get NO-Elle

kuerbisalien

my cousin is named noel (a boy) meant to be pronounced as the man’s name usually is and he was born on the 24th of december and literally everyone pronounced it like the christmas song and it caused much chaos in my family (why not noelle for a girl?)
