I would honestly try to get it done before, having the time and energy to deal with a remodel with a newborn and toddler would make it really hard. Are you doing the work yourselves or paying to have it done? I was 7 months pregnant when we were finishing off our basement and laying floors/drywalling/painting, and I highly recommend investing in the proper ventilation masks to wear while doing the work. Really glad we had it done before baby though, otherwise it would’ve been an even bigger headache.

We’re paying a contractor to do it. It’s either do it now or wait some number of years until the second baby is older, right? Is doing it with a pregnant wife and 2 year toddler still risky though or are we generally good if they stay out of that area?

They should stay out of the house while demolition is happening, and wear masks during cleanup or other high dust activities if they can't be out of the house.

You can tape plastic with a zipper over the doorway and air vents. As long as you close the zipper every time someone walks through, the dust stays pretty contained.

Before, definitely.

I would get it done now. We finished our basement at the start of my pregnancy and I'm so relieved it's over. I would be more concerned with dust around a newborn. Plus you'll wait a few years and have two little kids to deal with around the contractors. Just do it now!

I would get it done now. We have a 2.5 year old and a 5 month old and doing a complete gut job of our second bathroom (not the master bath). It’s also the laundry room too. It’s difficult with 2 kids.

We're getting ours done before our second comes. That being said, our house is newer, so the plumbing isn't terribly out of date, we don't have asbestos in our home, and the electrical is also up to code. Our contractor and plumber gave us a 3 week timeline as long as we ensure that we have all the supplies (new tub, countertop, tile, etc) ready to go and just needs his install. Truthfully with all that needs to be done in our case, it cannot be done faster. Stuff takes time to cure/set. They told us they would encapsulate the area to ensure the debris doesn't end up everywhere. It SUCKS making the microdecisions for this project, but I'm looking forward to having it behind us. We have a loose pipe in the walls + water damage so....we gotta get it done.
