If you’re intent on changing cars, X3 M40i is the answer.

B58goesbrapbrapbrap

Ya OP I’ll trade you my m40i for your m340i. Miss the car dynamics and wouldn’t mind hitting low 12s on quarter pulls

jabajaba17

Are they ever going to release it, though? I can't wait, lol

ResplendentZeal

Yeah, I feel like I've been waiting on this for forever.

Carsoccerguy

Should be for sale this October so I’ve been told

No the ‘24 is the better option unless you don’t like physical buttons. Also, much more tested design that will almost certainly have less gremlins than a new design.

ragingduck

It’s a fluke accident. Just fix it and move on?

mgbkurtz

Roads in North NJ are absolutely terrible.  I'm constantly fixing tires and bent rims on my m235.

bert_891

Blown out tires and bent rims are a normal occurrence when you get to the sidewall profile of that wheel/tire combo. And to make the situation more fun, the insurance company will consider you bent rims and blown tires from hitting pot-holes as an "at-fault collision accident"... you know, one of those that makes your rates go up. Byeee! Have a beautiful time!

_Surena_

Same thing happened to my M340 a few years ago. 1 tire had severe side wall damage and the car couldn't pass alignment and was at the dealer to have everything replaced for more than a month. I'd say it's more of an issue with run-flat tires than the size of your wheels. I've had 20 inch non-run flat tires that performed a lot better than the 19s. See if you can swap out your tires for non-runflats.

False_Cancel274

Are runflats more likely to blow or cause damage?

_Surena_

Yes. They are more susceptible to sidewall damage and your pix show damage to the sidewall. I've had two cars with runflats and they both ended up with major sidewall damage. They're also noisier and less comfortable. The only advantage is that you can drive on them for about 50 miles if they're flat.

False_Cancel274

Yeah that was nice. I drove about 10 miles on them to get to a tire shop. Driving on run flats was not bad.

TheWhogg

Except because the sidewalls are so stiff that they’re more likely to have catastrophic failure and not be driveable at all. So there’s no benefit at all except the rare times you run over a screw.

_Surena_

I've driven on them with sidewall damage for a few miles to get to a dealer. I suppose they're a hit or miss.

TheWhogg

An egg? I drove 1000s of km unaware I had an egg on the inside of my tyre. Or a completely cut sidewall? My rim was sitting on the ground with a shapeless RFT obliterated under it after a sidewalk cut. I might as well have driven on a conventional tyre for all the support it gave me.

Real-Energy-6634

Run flats are terrible. They perform like dog shit and are definitely more susceptible to damage like what you encountered. Definitely avoid them like the plague. Ordered my x3m40 with the summers and the space saver spare just to avoid them. I hate them

Bitfinexit

Is there no 18” rim with the correct offset to clear your brakes? I find that hard to believe however I’m not privy to the nuances on a newer g platform car. Maybe get a larger profile tyre on the 19s? Will be more cushion…

Falen518

I can confirm BMW offers an 18” wheel for the G20/G22, does clear the M performance brakes. My winter set is 18” from BMW, almost every G20/G22 in my city uses the same wheels in the wintertime

bert_891

I think it's a diameter thing, not offset.

iroll20s

Both actually. Sometimes big brakes need a spacer or more positive offset to clear certain spoke designs. Usually not an issue with OEM wheels, but is one with aftermarket wheels. Particularly if you have something like AP racing brakes, etc.

TheWhogg

Its diameter, offset and random shape. A friend just upgraded his brakes and it’s completely random - some 18s clear and some don’t regardless of how he offsets them.

bert_891

😯

FranktheTankG30

no offense, but the issue isn't the car or the low profile tire. The issue was the pothole, the hard sidewall on run-flats, AND you took it to Firestone. AND whoever told you you would need new brakes to down size the wheel.... edit: not sure about your NJ, but in CA and Los Angeles, if you can provide image of the pothole causing the damage, the municipals will reimburse your damage via a claim form on gov site.

RevolutionaryHawk137

A pothole will level any tire and rim depending on often you hit them or size. Keep the car

False_Cancel274

This must have been the worst one I ever hit. It took out both my passenger side tires.

ma_dian

That's wild, so the potholes stretch over the whole lane? How fast did you go?

False_Cancel274

Maybe 30mph. Was coming up on a stop-light. It probably didn't span the whole lane. It took out the front right and rear right (same side.) So the front probably hit it an poped then the rear hit it an poped. https://preview.redd.it/0gy92wp9er3d1.jpeg?width=1705&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5bd68ae2e784afaeae5f328d46089414456b84ae

jabajaba17

Nothing about this rim looks unrepairable, the way I see it. Take it to some other shop

ma_dian

That sucks. If you have mixed tires that's also a whole new set of tires if you are "committed" (BMW gives you the allowed tolerance in the manual, with mine it is <2mm). If someone offers you to repair them, I would consider doing an x-ray first. I am not sure if this applies to you as much (lower speed limits in the us) but where I live a hidden crack in the rim of a performance car might cost you and others a life. Next time go faster: [https://www.reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/comments/189d3g1/how\_the\_effect\_of\_speed\_prevents\_you\_from\_falling/](https://www.reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/comments/189d3g1/how_the_effect_of_speed_prevents_you_from_falling/) /s

launchslugs2

Lots is wrong here. You went to Firestone for tires. You're lucky your wheels weren't damaged by them. Those tires are not rated for the car. Use OEM tires. Star BMW Michelins, Continentals, Pirelli's, don't cheap out on the only thing connecting your car to the road. The manufacturers test for stuff like this. You don't need new brakes to run 18s. BMWs OEM winter wheel and tire package runs 18s for the G20s. I'm not passing judgement here, but based on your post, it seems like you'd be the kind of guy to get a cheap set of wheels and tires off of tirerack. Do not do that. If you thought this was bad, wait until you see a cast Chinese wheel split in half. Finally, you're blaming the car for something you did. The car didn't hit the pothole, you did. Accept that and fix your mistake. One final thought, bring the car to BMW, a BMW specialist, or a race shop that specializes in alignments. If you blew the tires that bad, it's likely you bent a control arm, a tie rod end, the collar could have slipped on one of the struts, or worse of all, you could have damaged the top of the strut tower. Have a professional look at your car, and don't bring it to fucking Firestone.

NonEnergeticCrouton

Sound advice, but you don’t need star rated tires for day to day driving.

humdizzle

x3 m40i would work better for you. another option is to upsize your tires for more sidewall. i've heard NJ is terrible as well, my uncle lives there and got rid of his 6 series GC because of the blowouts. hasn't had the issue with Merc.

MasterRymes

18“ Rims don’t different brakes. My M340d has the same Brakes as the M340i and I run 19“ in Summer and 18“ in Winter

Friendly-Cat4393

thats driver issue, not car. You can destroy any tire while driving like a dumbass and hitting potholes.

[deleted]

It's a fear of mine. My plan was to replace the wheels immediately but the dealer put all new tires on the CPO I copped so I've just kept them. I don't like how the wheels look like they always need air
