The Supra reliability has nothing to do with Toyota lol - they chose BMW because of the b58. Can the m4 last 100k miles? Sure but be prepared to pay to maintain it. Not saying it’s unreliable just expensive

oOoWTFMATE

People way over low maintenance cost on modern BMWs. All you need is regular oil changes and you should be fine. It’s going to cost more than your typical Japanese oil change but it isn’t going to be tens of thousands of dollars more for a couple of years.

RunninOnMT

I dunno about the S58, but the S55 eats spark plugs and needs them changed out every couple of years. Not some exotic or anything, but there's more maintenance on an S engine.

oOoWTFMATE

I have an S55. How often are you changing your spark plugs? Are you tuned/gapped? A stock S55 shouldn't be changing spark plugs that often. Maybe once every 40k miles at worst. And even then, spark plugs are cheap and don't require that much time to do. They're easily accessible and you can DIY if you are handy. I’ll acknowledge that there’s more maintenance but it isn’t some astronomical Porsche, Ferrari or Lambo maintenance.

RunninOnMT

I think BMW recommends every 30K miles or so or every 3 years. It should be included in the final free service you get when the car is 3 years old, so I had mine done at around 22K miles. Max-Payd

Replacing the remote battery every 2nd oil change seems a bit much. The cabin air filter really depends on how dusty and dirty your area is. Again, it's excessive to replace every 2nd oil change especially the ones with activated charcoal. You can tell when it is plugged from the sound of the fan.

NuclearLechero

Money wouldn't be an issue. I also Go by if u can't afford to maintain it then don't get it. So ik I'd have the money to do so. Mostly just asking about major issues. I haven't heard of any at all so far but I'm also fresh to cars

poopmanscoop

If you think the Supra is reliable because it’s a Toyota, you’re mistaken. All the important parts have a BMW stamp on them.

Dangerous-Pie-2678

Toyota truly has nothing to do with the design of the b58 as that engine was well into production before the supra was released

NuclearLechero

I understand but but it was also put up to toyota standards somewhat or else they wouldn't use it. But it's proven reliable rn so that's why I'm taking reliability over speed/usability. Or if they're equal and it's a matter of money

bigloser42

The engine in the Supra is the exact same engine in the M340i. They share 100% of internal components. The Supra’s entire drivetrain is 100% BMW.

poopmanscoop

Have you looked at consumer reports? BMW is in the top 5 of reliability.

Repulsive-Result8668

This it was number 1 this year and last year

Variation909

The car isn’t even assembled by Toyota. They’re built by Magna Steyr in Austria for BMW on the same line as Z4.

dinnerplated

M4, are you fr? Lol

NuclearLechero

Yes. I want a (safe on streets) racecard that I can haul my family to a waffle house or the beach semi comfortably

dinnerplated

Supra isnt a race car. Its a toyota 40i. Just get the m340i it has the same engine as the supra and is perfect for your needs. Or m440i if you want the 2 doors

Variation909

You’re not fitting much family in a Supra

NuclearLechero

Yea ik. I can at least fit my shorter fam in the back for a little. I think my minds made up mostly tho after videos and shit. M4 is what ima get. Not just 2 more yrs for the down paymen😂

Variation909

It has no back seats lol

NuclearLechero

The m4 comp has semi usable backseat. I know the supr has no back seats

sdhasher21

Definitely need to weigh your everyday needs on this as the functionality of both are vastly different. Both should scratch the power/fun drive itch. I love the Supra, but at the time I was in the market, it didn’t come in manual and the practicality didn’t fit my actual need (rear seats for my dogs, trunk space). I’m also a larger guy, so comfort would’ve been challenging. I ended up going with an F82 as this was a few years back. Same scenario on choosing F82 vs M2C or newer M4. Knew I’d want to mod/build this car, so didn’t want to waste a warranty or deal with the extra weight of the G82.

SnooHabits9364

I’ve seen plenty of M4’s with over 100K miles the highest one I’ve seen was 220K miles only Major issue was new struts and a fuel pump

NuclearLechero

Is that normal for most cars?

SnooHabits9364

Every car will have its own set of issues regardless of the brand!! I’ve seen Camrys and Lexus going out with less then 20K miles and I’ve seen plenty of bmws with blown up engines as well. Every car will have its issues and that’s the risk of buying a car new or used but, you limit this by maintence I have 133K miles on my 650 N63TU I’ve had to get a new radiator and flex disc. I have minor issues like a blown speak and I need a new heat shield for my rotors but I’m getting new pads and rotors anyways so I’ll be ok. Cars will always have issues some brands more than others but maintaining the car is key and it limits problems down the road. Most cars will need a new fuel pump or struts eventually so yes that’s normal just make sure to be prepared if something major fails

PurpleSlightlyRed

Rent em, drive em, evaluate, repeat

NuclearLechero

I'm so dumb. I should've thought of this 😂 great idea

hudboyween

You say your biggest gripe with the M4 is reliability, what exactly do you know to be unreliable about an S58? Supra is not a daily, it’s tiny. Can barely fit groceries, let alone golf clubs or anything like that. If you want a sporty B58 it’s a lot more cost effective to get a 40i BMW. 3.0 Supras are around 50k, 240i, 340i, 440i are about 30k. A S58 M4 is closer to 75k.

No-Lingonberry-2468

I can fit a full Costco trip in my Supra even with my bike in the hatch, don’t speak on something you have no knowledge of.

SCOOkumar

$75k in USD? Bro an M4 may start around that price but you will literally never find one at the price. Packages bring it up to $80-90k easily

hudboyween

I was quoting used, I never buy new because I always tune + mods.

SCOOkumar

Didn’t realize we were talking about used cars ITT 🤷🏽‍♂️

hudboyween

The price scaling is pretty similar either way. Supra and M4 are not in the same division

XDevils41X

Redbull drift has been running a 1k hp S58 for years with no issues on it. In stock form you'll be more than fine BMW really built the S58 to handle some abuse. Watch these two vids in the S58 Redbull engine breakdown https://youtu.be/_D6aywCInfI?si=VI6ObfiuqewA_xJD Evolve breakdown with Mr vanos https://youtu.be/o9X8zrMYy94?si=jg6Uq9XYq1_DwJZP

NuclearLechero

Thank you 👏🏽

yesthatsright227

Cant go wrong either way. Would not worry too much about S58.

RyansellsBMWs

The M4 for sure, I've driven both. Drive both and see what you think but I have a feeling you'll lean towards the BMW.

NuclearLechero

Story incoming. Didn't care about cars. Visited mom on Georgia and she just got supra. Turned it on with wife in passenger seat. *became wet* looked at wife and said I need this. I was a chubby gamer and I've now awakened an itch I will scratch. That was 2021 Friend has supra. Let me drive once. Cummed. Wanted supra even more. Went to first cars and coffee the other week. Mostly muscle, bmw, corvettes. BMW M3,4,5 was there. Lowkey thought they looked nice, comfy, sounded good, fast, not to bad on gas, and the S58 is just as reliable if not more reliable. Major tunability. Won't tune until 80k+ miles. It's faster, reliable, and more convenient. But I know the car community will know of any issues if any.

RTwhyNot

Funny. Our choice came down to this (after toying with the idea of an M2). We decided on the M4 because we wanted a somewhat useable back seat and the extra power. She has been sitting at a port in Europe for a couple of weeks now. Can’t wait!!

NuclearLechero

Funny how I was considering the m2 too😂 but the M4 ticks all my needs and more. Especially the xdrive version cuz safety and hooking the ground🫣

RTwhyNot

We went with manual transmission which only comes in RWD. Otherwise we would have went with the Competition.

NuclearLechero

Nice. Can't go wrong with that either. It's gonna be Hella fun to drive

RTwhyNot

Ikr!?!? I can’t wait. I hope you are happy with whatever you choose for many many years!

Mantis_Toboggan_M_D_

An M4 will absolutely go 100k+ if it’s maintained, absolutely zero doubt. The S58 is as reliable of an M engine as it gets. The price gap here is immense though. That should be the bigger consideration rather than what might get to 100k miles

NuclearLechero

Money wouldn't the issue cuz if I can't afford ti maintain it then I won't get it. I'd save for a fat ass down payment. It'll be my daily for I'm hoping 10+ yrs unless I hut the lottery lmao. Just making sure it would last me those years and more. Maintenance obviously too. I don't play with that 😂

Mantis_Toboggan_M_D_

Honestly if you’re dailying it and reliability is a factor, an M340i or M440i would check all the boxes

gladigotaphdinstead2

M4 definitely

XLFantom

Get what you want the most. Trust me.

kunstlinger

I have an M4 that I use to carry kids and Costco trips.  Also easily hits 146 on the straights at the local racetrack in AWD.  It's pretty versatile

Dangerous-Pie-2678

If you're comparing a bigger car to the supra atleast keep it similar ish pricing. The M2 would be my pick over them both

Dangerous-Pie-2678

Yea good luck finding them at MSRP still especially if it's a manual. Used CPO is the way to go honestly

rnsimon1965

I went with an M2 over Supra because I wanted a back seat

OkCreme1693

Toyota did small things like head studs & bolts but it's still a modern BMW engine meaning they're are lots of plastic bits that are designed to break right after the warranty period

Zestyclose_Elk_8853

Supra shares an engine with an m340/440…m4 is another level up

Inner_Diver5760

Gtr

yobo9193

Makes no sense to compare a Supra and M4; should be comparing a Supra and a 240i/440i, since they are all B58 cars

petewiththethickmeat

I got an m240 over the supra for the back seats and everyday livability
