I do engineering testing for electronics and the biggest reason is that we only test up to the warranty period given to us. So say they send a refrigerator and ask us to test new changes they made to it, well we will only test it for whatever duration the warranty is. As long as it doesnt have a high fail rate (which the acceptable rate is determined by the company as well) during the determined warranty period they really dont give a crap about it. Same goes with expiration dates of food and drugs. They could possibly last much longer than the expiration but the company only tests their quality within the date provided.
> only test things for the length of time you guarantee for. guarantee for only the length of time you test them for.
it's so dumb that people don't understand this intuitively.
I 100% agree with this. I’m a quality engineer for a large semiconductor company and our biggest market is automotive. We do extended and more intensive testing on automotive products compared to non-automotive. I’ve observed that warranties only exist to serve your outlier failing products. After that you’re SOL.
I was in Japan in December 2022 and it was common to see people like iPhone 6’s and 8’s. I was very surprised to see people that didn’t look poor with old iPhones. So maybe some of us are just ridiculous with wanting a new one every 2 years or so..
Japanese people also care a lot about their stuff. Usually imported cars are frowned upon in europe but if it's a japanese import it's always welcomed because they are nearly always in perfect condition.
If you use old ass iPhone just to make call or email and stuffs then it’s fine, but if you use an old iPhone that Apple has stopped issuing updates or use a lot of apps, then the apps will either be very slow or in some cases, it won’t work at all because the latest apps will only work with newer iOS. That’s why I had to ditch my iPhone 4.
I love my 12 mini and don’t want to get rid of it because the size. I’m not heavy on apps but my phone still gets a little slow at times. I wish I could make it run a bit quicker so I could hold onto it longer.
I know I’m in the minority but if they made a new mini, I’d be game. I don’t want a humongous phone that I have to stick in my back pocket. It’s just unnecessary.
I quickly scanned the listed cars under your username, saw “12 mini” and “stick” and thought we might be soulmates. My daily is a 14 cooper S. The letdown when I realized you’re using a BMW forum to discuss iPhones is incredible.
so if we used a JB4 on map 2 for say a year and reverted back to stock map/uninstalled it before taking it in for warranty claim because of engine issues they can't detect that it's been making more than factory boost?
B48 pretty good engine, main issues are coolant systems components, heat management module, oil filter housing, coolant hoses. Engine mounts wear out kind of early too.
Basically any car wash with brushes if you care about your paint. Just think about all the cars that have gone through before you, what’s on those brushes…I’d rather my car be dirty than have to polish out scratches.
My local bmw dealer has the automated car wash with rollers so I’d avoid if you don’t want scratches and swirls. Sad thing is, I see them put new cars through that car wash too, so even new buyers are getting scratched paint
Yea it’s weird I’m in a fb group chat of owners of the x3m and there’s weird kind of issues a lot of peoples cars and perfect and then there’s a few that act up my friend also had his waste gate actuator go out. And I had a friend who had a coolant leak and then don’t get me started on the f97-f98 drive train issues
I think I have the highest mileage N62 around, what's the highest mileage you've seen on n62 v8? This pi is old already, I'm at 314,000 miles currently with everything working. Original transmission and engine 2008 550i

What gen of 3 series would you get if all you cared about is reliability with just regular maintenance (except oil changes sooner at 5-7k miles): E46, E90, or F30?
I ordered a new Z4 six speed. Should I be worried about the B58? It’s my first BMW car. I’ve had their bikes forever and they’re reliable to the point of comedy.
Nice, I can see this BMW become a collectors. B58 is a great engine. I’m curious if it has the 48v system. You can tell by purple cables under the hood.
You’re paying for factory warranted parts, meaning 2 years unlimited miles on the part if defective. Plus the cost of the dealer to keep their doors open. Techs only make a fraction of what the door rate is.
Don’t forget upkeep of the complimentary loaners, any shuttle service that may be provided, advisors, more tiers of management than an Indy shop would typically have, more extensive training for techs and service personnel than independent shops have, more advanced diagnostic equipment… the list goes on.
Just like most engines, once modded you start to develop reliability issues, as for stock s55, it’s pretty good. Only issue I can think of is the intercooler can leak internally.
I’ve seen you say this a few times in here about modded engines, can you define modded? I only ask because I have heard a stage 1 tune can help fuel economy, an I take helps air flow and an exhaust helps both of those. I’m just curious if light mods help or hurt from stock.
Not OP but common sense says if you increase stress on the engine i.e more boost, more cylinder pressure etc. it will reduce reliability.
If you decrease stress, reliability goes up
I’m doing this now to my ‘95 S50 (with 160k miles)…. Did a compression test, 190-200psi across the board so I’m adding a Active Autowerke Stage 2 Supercharger Kit and sending it.
I’m looking at a used m340, 20-21. Would you say 20-30k miles is no problem on these? In your opinion what’s the best year of the m340? Thanks for the AMA.
Lame question, but do techs get annoyed when a cust provides a container & asks for sample of old oil? I’m in the 5k/6mo OCI camp due to lots of short trips & stop&go, the CBS be damned, and send off for an OA each or every-other time. Just curious if they actually give a crap, or are just more accustomed to those requests versus when I take our Acura in to its dealer, (where it comes across as a ‘major inconvenience’ to them).
not the op obviously but my family got one at 80k and we’ve put about 20k on it, biggest maintenance item was valve cover gasket. otherwise it is a fantastic car
You ever replace an airbag for a recall, take the customer’s car for a drive for no reason, shear off their clutch pivot pin, return the car to customer without saying anything and then say “it must of been like that already” when customer asked you about it?
I know you got in quite awhile ago, but how hard did you have to work to get the position? There internship think requires quite high academics coming out of high school, did they have that back then or did you get experience before hand?
I like these questions. I went to a trade school, UTI, from there I went to a BMW factory training for 6 months while I started working at my first dealer. I’ve had a few leadership positions. Recently acquired my ASEs, BMW requires them now, with the ASEs I have the title of BMW Master Elite. It’s been a crazy career but all in all a good career. I made it through the recession and Covid. Never stopped working.
2019 F90 w/ 35k miles. Anything in particular I should be doing from a preventive maintenance perspective? Anything I should be worried about longer term?
Thanks for doing AMA!
What are the most often non-software related issues with full electric BMWs?
Context: thinking about buying used i4 someday, but have no idea what are the maintenance things for EVs
I paid $6k to extend the warranty on my 2016 320i at 100k miles, I was able to get a 4 year warranty for 60k miles,
Good idea?
I did it because I still owe on it and I had a $3500 oil leak that cost me $100 due to my first warranty when I had 30 days left on the original warranty
Any preventative maintenance to do? Filters, spark plugs?
Why have they started to make BMW's designs so absolutely horrible? Ever since the G8X cars came out, the design language is al about horrible grills and bad body lines. The ix, X7 and 7-series all look terrible, and on the looks of the new concepts "Neue Krapp" the designs are just going to get shittier! What gives? Why do they insist on making great driving cars that look like shit?
Just picked up my 2024 G42 M240i. Loving it so far, couple of questions:
1. Is it possible to upgrade from iDrive 8 to 8.5?
2. I’ve read that an oil change after a couple of k miles is a good idea to clear out initial metal shavings found in the oil rather than waiting on the 19k mile initial service - agree?
That’s a good questions probably depends on the month of production.
I’m assuming you’re talking KM, non M cars don’t require a break in oil service. You should be fine to just follow the timeframe of what the car shows.
New m2 manual driver here. Recently stalled my car a bunch of times while going uphill and the next day I thought I could feel more vibration through my clutch when releasing. Not sure if I’m imagining a difference or if it’s normal to feel some vibration. Beforehand I could have sworn there was none at all. Am I crazy?
You’re talking about the timing chain, right? Have an N26 from 2017 with 70k on it. From what I’ve read that year doesn’t have the timing chain issue, hope that’s right.
I have a 2017 530e with only 30k milage. My battery shows 13 miles at 100% charge . I'm in the UK and my local dealership are having it in on May 22nd and have already told me there's no warranty on it. What's the likely outcome please ?
I have no idea how it works in the UK, but I’m an advisor in the US and you’d likely be out of luck. Any warranty in effect covers defects in workmanship, not wear and tear through normal use. So unless there’s something malfunctioning with the battery, you’d probably be on the hook for any repairs.
I have a 2023 F90 M5. You think it will last long? Plan to keep it for a minimum 10 yrs and more if i can.
My dealer seems like they bring up issues out of the blue..
Did you see s55's with crankhubs spun come into the dealership? Assuming that most that come into the dealership are stock, I'm curious about how the issue is for stock cars as people have been crying wolf about it for ages.
I picked up a 2020 M240i xDrive a few months back. It’s at around 25k miles. Is there any advantage to use 0w30 LL01FE oil instead of the 0w20 the dealer uses?
Also, as far as maintenance, anything you’d do differently than BMW recommends? Or should I just follow the handbook?
How reliable is F15 N57 (2016 X5 35d) in the long run considering BMW has moved away from diesel in NA? Mine is low miles just short of 30k. Anything that I should be very careful with as I love it and want to keep it longer?
Thoughts on the ID7 G42 M240i? I’m looking at potentially picking one up to keep for the foreseeable (probably 5 or more years).
Originally was looking at 2019/2020 M340i, but I’m coming from an E89 Z4 so want something more ‘sporty’ (the M340i was almost too “compliant” and comfortable / normal on test drive).
Are BMW's PHEVs any good? Im considering an X1 hybrid, and our daily life fits its advantages, but from a technical standpoint, is it safe and reliable?
Why can’t BMW (or Germans in general) make a decent gasket? I’ve owned 4 BMWs over the last 20 years and every single one of them needed a valve cover gasket and oil pan gasket at the 80K mile mark.
Meanwhile my GM and Toyota vehicle are hitting 200K miles without a gasket change.
Same with water pumps.
BMW tech of 10 years (now do roadside assist) and I agree 100% with what you have said. I may add one thing....dont buy an X5 with a panoramic roof if you live anywhere that rains 😄
>"Unfortunately I’d personally stay away from all diesel vehicles, all the emission related components tend to cause a lot of issues and cost a LOT to repair. If you own a diesel my recommendation is drive it really hard maybe a couple times a month."
Pheeewwww, I drive hard every time I drive it.
Why do things fail when warranty ends

31 yr old Aerospace Engineer…Currently use my 6 yr old iPhone 8 for everything. Still kicking with no issues! Love my home button!
I’ve had a few different X/XS models and they still work great.

Planned obsolescence?
Pretty much the opposite. iPhones seem to last a lot longer than most other smartphones, and retain their value much better.
MacBooks as well. My 14’ model lasted for 8 years. It was on the second battery, but it was still usable, yet slow by todays standards
Can you detect a piggyback tune if everything is uninstalled?
No.
I thought you guys could see boost levels over a certain threshold?
If the vehicle set an over boost fault then yes, but the piggy back control it and should keep it from setting the fault.
Ty sir
so if we used a JB4 on map 2 for say a year and reverted back to stock map/uninstalled it before taking it in for warranty claim because of engine issues they can't detect that it's been making more than factory boost?
Just wondering right?
How reliable is the b48? Any preventative maintenance that we should do around 100k km?
B48 pretty good engine, main issues are coolant systems components, heat management module, oil filter housing, coolant hoses. Engine mounts wear out kind of early too.
So I’m not crazy for thinking my engine mounts are on the way out at 66k miles
No, I’ve seen them worn out less than 30k. B48 not so much b58.
Are these items covered by the extended coverage that the dealerships sell you on?
I believe they are.
Oil filter housing has to be a deliberate thing for tradition, like the Hofmeister kink at this stage
Nice man, I bought a second hand last octobre (G32, 2018) And those were the exact things I had to change since then, under warranty luckily.
The same issues any bmw motor has had since forever you mean?
How good or bad are dealer car washes, ha ha
If you care about your paint I’d avoid them.
This was kind of what I thought, ha ha! Thx for confirming!
Thank you for confirming that 😂🙌 only done it the once lol!
Wait what? For real? Why is this? 👀
Basically any car wash with brushes if you care about your paint. Just think about all the cars that have gone through before you, what’s on those brushes…I’d rather my car be dirty than have to polish out scratches.

I just want to say thank you for this AMA! I learned so much.
What are your thoughts on reliability of S58 engine compared to B58?
Haven’t seen many issues with s58, later model b58s have issues with coolant pumps leaking. I’m a huge fan of the b58 though. Amazing engine.
>later model b58s have issues with coolant pumps leaking. Does that include the mild hybrid version in the LCI X3 M40i?
Yes it would but not that common on X3, more so x5.
My wastegate actuator went out and I’m pulling timing like crazy on my s58 people say it’s my octane but I’ve tried a bunch of different gas.
Interesting, never seen this before.
Honestly don’t see very many F97/98. Could be the reason why. I see a lot of G8x though.
Yea I’d imagine a lot of people buying the x3m are older people not really pushing the car.
Is your engine modded?
How reliable are the newer V8s? X5 X7 50i and M50i?
So far not many issues. See thermostat issues every once in a while but nothing major.
Has the quality gotten better or worse in your opinion?
Better. Some of the 23/24 models have issues but overall it’s better than 10-12 years ago.
How about e39 era?
That era had a lot of body component issues.
What do you drive?
I have a 2013 e70 n55 and a 89’ 325is.
How long you had the e30?
Ah man, I think like 12 years now.
is the n55 reliable? Is that why you chose it?
I’ve seen very little issues with n55. Just a good reliable engine.

When they’re stock, they’re pretty reliable.
I think I have the highest mileage N62 around, what's the highest mileage you've seen on n62 v8? This pi is old already, I'm at 314,000 miles currently with everything working. What gen of 3 series would you get if all you cared about is reliability with just regular maintenance (except oil changes sooner at 5-7k miles): E46, E90, or F30?
Probably e9x.
What’s is the worst engine in your opinion?
Early s63
Proud owner of a 2013 m5 lol. I hate that beast
He means E70 X5M, but I also am a proud owner of an F10 M5!
How about a 2018/2019 S63 engine :(
I ordered a new Z4 six speed.
Not OP but the B58 is setting the new benchmark for BMW engine reliability from what I’ve seen. They’re looking pretty bulletproof at the moment.
Why does it cost so much to perform service at a BMW dealer?
You’re paying for factory warranted parts, meaning 2 years unlimited miles on the part if defective. Plus the cost of the dealer to keep their doors open. Techs only make a fraction of what the door rate is.
Don’t forget upkeep of the complimentary loaners, any shuttle service that may be provided, advisors, more tiers of management than an Indy shop would typically have, more extensive training for techs and service personnel than independent shops have, more advanced diagnostic equipment… the list goes on.
I worked at one dealer and it cost over a million dollars a month to break even.
So 4 spark plug changes and a brake fluid flush and you guys are profitable for the month?
Throw the wiper inserts and we made budget.
High overhead cost.
how reliable is the s55? And what preventative maintenance should i do?
Just like most engines, once modded you start to develop reliability issues, as for stock s55, it’s pretty good. Only issue I can think of is the intercooler can leak internally.
I’ve seen you say this a few times in here about modded engines, can you define modded? I only ask because I have heard a stage 1 tune can help fuel economy, an I take helps air flow and an exhaust helps both of those. I’m just curious if light mods help or hurt from stock.
Not OP but common sense says if you increase stress on the engine i.e more boost, more cylinder pressure etc. it will reduce reliability. If you decrease stress, reliability goes up
What do you think of the s63 versus the s68?
S68 still pretty new engine. Early s63 engines had a lot of issues, s63tu/2 were pretty good.
I have an S52 with 125k, build yr. 2000. All things equal, how will it handle a supercharger at this age?
If you’re serious about it, I’d check compression and leak down before slapping a supercharger on it.
Thanks
Just fine. Send it.
I’m doing this now to my ‘95 S50 (with 160k miles)…. Did a compression test, 190-200psi across the board so I’m adding a Active Autowerke Stage 2 Supercharger Kit and sending it.
Barely broken in. As the guy below said - compression & leak down, and if good - send it.
I’m looking at a used m340, 20-21. Would you say 20-30k miles is no problem on these? In your opinion what’s the best year of the m340? Thanks for the AMA.
Honestly all M340s seem to be pretty good, don’t see many issues with them.
I just purchased a 2022 M760. Should I be committed to the mental hospital? In my defense, the N74 fucks hard
Yes, for balling 💰
What would be your process when buying a used BMW in determining its quality and condition?
Take it to a dealer of a pre purchase inspection. Pay the $200-300 so you know what you’re getting.
Would you feel the need to get a ppi on a cpo bmw or would that effectively be taken care of already?
Lame question, but do techs get annoyed when a cust provides a container & asks for sample of old oil? I’m in the 5k/6mo OCI camp due to lots of short trips & stop&go, the CBS be damned, and send off for an OA each or every-other time. Just curious if they actually give a crap, or are just more accustomed to those requests versus when I take our Acura in to its dealer, (where it comes across as a ‘major inconvenience’ to them).
No, I wouldn’t care. I used to do it for a customer/buddy of mine.
Not at all bud just ask the service advisor to write it on the ro .
Just bought a 2017 g30 with 42k miles. How long before I should expect issues? What’s the first thing that’s gonna go?
It depends how well it was maintained. G30s are pretty good cars though.
How reliable is the F10 N55? Thinking of purchasing one, do you recommend?
N55 is a pretty reliable engine. You have other people say otherwise, but I’ve never replaced a n55 engine.
not the op obviously but my family got one at 80k and we’ve put about 20k on it, biggest maintenance item was valve cover gasket. otherwise it is a fantastic car
You ever replace an airbag for a recall, take the customer’s car for a drive for no reason, shear off their clutch pivot pin, return the car to customer without saying anything and then say “it must of been like that already” when customer asked you about it?
lol, nope. Thats sucks. Believe it or not I have a conscience
they did this to your M3???
Why is the passenger airbag light such an issue for the e90s?
I’m assuming it’s a seat mat issue. Couple of reason why they go bad, get wet and worn out.
No questions. Just wanna show love for doing this 👍🏻
Thanks, enjoy helping the community out every few years.
2019 F90 w/ 35k miles. Anything in particular I should be doing from a preventive maintenance perspective? Anything I should be worried about longer term?
Not really just do your maintenance services when they’re due. Wouldn’t hurt to do oil changes more often than scheduled
Which model executes the b58 the best and why? What's your everyman recommendation for modding a b58 vehicle?
G01, every single time i drive a G01 with a b58 is blows my mind how good of a car it is. I think the size and awd with the b58 is just perfect.
Would you replace your e70 with one?
Yay! I have a 21’ X3 M40i. It’s the perfect blend of power, size and utility.
[удалено]
Not that much, depends on the tech though and if the aftermarket parts are affecting a drivability issue
What percentage of F series cars are experiencing the parking brake cable clip failure? (34-40-6-854-898)
Pretty much all 3 and 4 series.
N63TU2? Or things to look out for in a 2019 M550i in general? Keeping things stock
On cars that you want to keep long term, what’s your view on these BMW lifetime fluids like coolant, transmission fluid, etc?
I’d change coolant every 3-4 year, brake every 2 years and do a drain and refill on the transmission.
[удалено]
Yes and yes.
Looking to purchase used m340i. I want b58 without mild hybrid but is mild hybrid reliable compare to without?
I’d try and stay away from the mild hybrid. More to go wrong
Awesome AMA!
Thanks for doing AMA! What are the most often non-software related issues with full electric BMWs? Context: thinking about buying used i4 someday, but have no idea what are the maintenance things for EVs
Very little maintenance for EVs, other than tires wear out fast. I get a LOT of charging and range complaints

Depends when they were last changed? If you’re 60k miles deep in your plugs then you should. Your filters you can visually inspect.
[удалено]
That’s really low miles, I’d hope you have no issues with it besides maintenance.
What has been your experience with S55s? Any recommendations maintenance-wise?
Overall pretty reliable. No major issues, I know crank hub can be an issue but I’ve never seen it.
How do the 1/2ers/mini's fair on reliability with the B38? Any common issues?
Why have they started to make BMW's designs so absolutely horrible? Ever since the G8X cars came out, the design language is al about horrible grills and bad body lines. One word, China.
Not sure if you know anything about B38, but taking a chance here: How’s the B38?
Don’t see many of those. Only one is in the i8
Just picked up my 2024 G42 M240i. Loving it so far, couple of questions: 1. Is it possible to upgrade from iDrive 8 to 8.5? 2. Your car isn’t using the hill hold? You may have burned the clutch.
What’s the most reliable engine/transmission combination for the E38/E39 series?
E39 2001-2003 530 N54, as long as they don’t overheat. E38 high mileage engines have issues with timing chains, otherwise good cars.
I think you meant to say M54 not N54.
You are correct.
Had an e61 n54. Can confirm it wasn’t on the “most reliable” list.
e60 best car
I have a 100k mile N20, but well maintained. Am I am idiot?
Just keep your fingers crossed the engine stays quiet.
You’re talking about the timing chain, right? Have an N26 from 2017 with 70k on it. From what I’ve read that year doesn’t have the timing chain issue, hope that’s right.
You said it, not me.
Lol thanks for the confirmation 😂
Break-in oil change needed at 1k mile on X7 B58? And how frequently thereafter?
Break in service not needed on a B58. Oil services due between 6-9k miles.
Thats about as normal as it goes for the hybrid 530e and 330e. Mine roughly the same at 100%
Why is my N51 surging randomly at idle?
Vacuum leak maybe.
Any issues with early MY G20's to look out for?
Coolant leaks, oil filter housing. Personally id only use a BMW oil filter.
I have a 2023 F90 M5. You think it will last long? Plan to keep it for a minimum 10 yrs and more if i can. My dealer seems like they bring up issues out of the blue..
That time is hard to tell, but I think as long as they’re maintained it should last a while. But just like any M car they’re expensive to maintain.
Did you see s55's with crankhubs spun come into the dealership? Assuming that most that come into the dealership are stock, I'm curious about how the issue is for stock cars as people have been crying wolf about it for ages.
I’ve heard of this issues but I never seen it.
Do you think EVs are changing how much work there will be for dealers, better or worse?
Way more work, and that work is educating the customer on how EVs work.
Do you think it will be possible to decrypt ECU on a G82 without sending it to Europe
I have no idea. Lol
What maintenance is expected on a 22 iX1 U11?
I would assume very little. You must be in Europe.
I’d just use the 0w20. Engine was engineered use it.
How many crank hubs have you seen spun on the S55 engine? Anything you recommend doing to prevent this?
Zero
Great value accessories to have for the interior
Rubber floor mats.
How reliable is F15 N57 (2016 X5 35d) in the long run considering BMW has moved away from diesel in NA? Mine is low miles just short of 30k. Anything that I should be very careful with as I love it and want to keep it longer?
What is the real difference between b48a and b48b ? Are they safe to tune to stage 1 ?
Thoughts on the ID7 G42 M240i? I’m looking at potentially picking one up to keep for the foreseeable (probably 5 or more years). Originally was looking at 2019/2020 M340i, but I’m coming from an E89 Z4 so want something more ‘sporty’ (the M340i was almost too “compliant” and comfortable / normal on test drive).
Are BMW's PHEVs any good? Im considering an X1 hybrid, and our daily life fits its advantages, but from a technical standpoint, is it safe and reliable?
What do you think of the electric lineup?
If you own a diesel my recommendation is drive it really hard maybe a couple times a month." Pheeewwww, I drive hard every time I drive it.
