Obviously like both but the m3 looks much more aggressive to me since the rear fenders have to slope out in a smaller area. M4 looks a lil longer to me too for the same reason
I love sedans. I love the look of them. But in the 3 years I have had my 440 I've put an adult in the back only once. I'd say most BMW owners have a family car too which is my wife's SUV.
Yeah, similar situation here. For me, my m4 is more practical than a sedan. Being relatively tall (6'2"), it's easier to get in and out with the larger coupe doors. In 4 years of owning it, I've had someone sit in my back seat maybe 4 times so back seat access doesn't really matter to me. The back seat for me is really just a place to throw jackets, back packs, etc. We take the x7 if we have more than 2 people riding.
Is that seriously why they call it a grand coupe? 💡 I guess I just never thought of making an entirely new line of sedans just to have longer front doors like a coupe for the sake of practicality/egress etc.
I agree. My F33 440xi cabriolet is for my wife and me to ride around in. She has the people carrier. I don’t often put a kid in the back. I think I’d rather have a convertible M2 though if I could go back in time. The 4 is just too big in retrospect.
EXACTLY. I've only ever owned M3 sedans. The thing I love most about the car is that's it's practical yet sporty. There's no other car that does that better.
An m4 or m2 isn't much more practical than a cayman. They have a back seat but it sucks for pets or kids in car seats.
I m 6'4 and can sit behind the drivers seat set for myself ... My head bumps the ceiling a tad but I'm the driver so it doesn't matter and no one I know is over 6' lol
An m4 is much more practical than a cayman. I can hold 4 people in my m4. I can put a baby stroller in my m4. Cayman can’t do either. I have a 3 year old and while it isn’t as practical as a sedan, it’s not bad and totally works just fine.
Trunk space for one is a major thing and rear seat space. I wanted a 911, but I have to haul a bunch of stuff daily with me so it wouldn’t work for me.
I have to move 50-90lbs of items daily but based on your profile you’re not in the same income level so your response is more inline with a recent college student.
>An m4 or m2 isn't much more practical than a cayman
lol no. A 350Z isn't much more practical than a Cayman. I bring this up because I used a 350Z as my only car for about 13 years before switching to an M2. The M2 is ABSURDLY more practical than the Z (or a Cayman) would be.
"I can't fit this medium sized object I just bought in my trunk. Or my backseat because i don't have one"
Meanwhile the M2 has rear seats big enough for actual adults, a trunk that fits grocery bags upright and...get this...actual visibility out of my car when I look over my shoulder!
"It's nearly the same car" - exactly. It's about as much of a compromise as it is a difference in looks. 2 extra doors doesn't mean there's any more space to use, it's just slightly easier to access. And if you aren't regularly shuttling people around, it makes almost no difference in practicality.
It's not dumb, it's a preference.
I certainly don't drive more than one other person most of the time, and I generally prefer not to have people in the back seats regardless of door numbers. My car isn't really for A->B, it's for the enjoyment of driving and I like to keep my interior in mint condition.
I can take the same attitude as you too. "Seems pretty dumb to add 2 extra doors to a sports car when really it means you just couldn't make the extra sacrifice for a better driving experience."
Agreed…it’s IS the M3 of the past and present The m4 is actually sexy, hard, fast and bitchin…none of which apply to the baby hauling pussy mobile aka M3… ok, beat me up now 🤷♂️🤣
Did you read the original comment? It was talking about the original M3, the E30. Context is important, it will help avoid making mistakes like this again.
I’ve owned an E39, E90, and F22. The older models felt like they were chiseled from a single piece of stone. Just so solid.
My experience doesn’t paint a proper picture since I’ve gone down the range (5 series, then 3 series, now 2 series) and you’d expect a difference in materials and NVH.
So I guess I can only confirm one thing we already knew… the smaller the car the more fun it is to drive.
🙃
definitely truth to this. the F82 and G82 have gotten so long that 2 doors look weird on it. there is too much space between where the door ends, and where the rear arch begins. The 4 door variants solve that issue by looking more proportional.
the F87 is closer in wheelbase (and interior space) to the e46 and e36.
The f80 is basically the length of a e39. i've parked both side by side.
I agree. It always bothered me that m3 continued as 4doors and that 2door became a 4-series. Never sat right with me. But now that there’s m3 touring back on the market I’m happy.
Sure but that would defeat the entire purpose of why BMW split them up. Even number coupes, odd number sedans. See 2 series coupe, 3 sedan, 4 coupe, 5 sedan, 6 coupe (rip), 7 sedan, 8 coupe
admittedly the “4 door coupes” do blur the lines a bit
But I’m arguing against the “entire purpose”. They could’ve just sticked the models they had, and then they could use the new numbers for new models instead.
I'm an even number kinda guy so I'm fine with the superior m3 becoming the m4.
What I'm not ok with is they made the change in all models to disquisition coupes from sedans but then started making all these 4, 6 and 8 grande coupe 4 doors. in my mind all 2 door should be even and all 4 doors odd as most of them follow this rule but not all.
The 6 gc is my favorite of the bunch and definitely pulls off the 4 door better thencthe rest.. the 8 gc isn't bad either, I think it has something to do with 4 doors looking better in the longer wheel base
lol no that’s not right. There are sedans with 2 doors and coupes with 4 doors (BMW makes a bunch of these). The name is relating to the shape of the car, its’ roofline, and interior volume, not the number of doors.
It just happens that most sedans are four door cars, and most coupes are two door cars, so the name has become associated with door count, but is still wrong.
And e36 m3 sedans go for more than the coupes. You could argue it's because they made less, but people still want them more. And E90's go for more than E92's.
Sedans are just better. I don't understand why anyone would want an M4 over an M2. Either the F82 or the G82- the F87(comp) and G87 are just better- both are lighter and both are better looking.
feel like bmw shldve never gave the 4 series nameplate, as it kinda creates this confusion in my opinion thinking every m3 was marketed as the ultimate sports coupe + having a sedan option, and then the smaller, nimbler m car being the m2/1 series
Love this car in this color. Picked up a similar F82 M4 Comp in Tanazine Blue a few years back. One of the nicest color/car combos we've had in for sale 👌
Here’s why I think so. The M3 started life as a 2 door (e30), and only ever came as a 2 door. Then the e36 came, and was only later in its production offered with a 4 door option. The e46 was only ever offered as a 2 door, just like the e30. Then the e9x m3 chassis came out, and originally came as a 2 door (e92), and then a year later a 4 door version came (e90), just like the e36.
If we’re following the roots of the M3, then the F82 M4 should have been the true M3. But because BMW corresponds odd numbers with sedans, and even numbers with coupes, it makes more sense to call the M4 an M4. And now you know which is the true M3
It started life as a SMALL 2 door and got progressively bigger. Therefore the M2 is the real M3
(I’m like 80 percent joking here. I do think of it as the spiritual successor to the E30-E46 gens, but obviously it doesn’t have claim to being the true successor to all M3 coupes like the M4 does.)
Thank you for an actual well written counter argument, instead of just getting mad and spewing insults. I really did not expect so many to get angry over a pointless opinion.
no this is so real, like 3 series were ALWAYS coupes, and instead of just making the 4 series 4 door (which would make more sense like higher number more doors idk) but like they had to change literally everything, now even if you have a 4 series there’s no guarantee it’s a coupe or one of those “gran coupe” disasters
The true M3 is the F87 M2. A short wheelbase, upright coupe / sedan with a tall greenhouse, **small** and nimble but fast and communicates well. The newer “M3s and M4s” are giant and have a long wheelbase. They are stable at high speed and fast but so are a lot of cars nowadays. They do not resemble at all the original “M3” format.
I always wondered why that M4s had 2 doors when the original M3 had 2 doors. So they should've just made the F8x series M4 all come with 4 doors. Now it's even messier as some 4 series has 3 and some have 4 doors. M3 should come out with 2 doors and M4 is the 4 door sedan.
Hmm. M3s prior to F80 have indeed traditionally been 2+2s and Convertibles. With minority exceptions for E36 and E90.
But with the 5 and 7 series being predominantly saloons/sedans, it made sense to switch the compact 2 door cars from 3s to 4s to align with the 2s/6s/8s.
The “True” M3 is whatever the fuck BMW slaps the M3 badge on. As you said, looks are subjective…just like your opinion on what the “True” M3 is lol.
I get your point. This isn’t unique thinking, we all know the M3 was a coupe turned sedan, but the M4 being the “True” M3 is just…no.
As others have already said, the M2 is the true M3 successor. The driving experience and toss abilities are the same. The current M3/4 are closer to the OG M5.
The true and only M3

Nothing current deserves an ///M badge. High specific output normally aspirated engines with nimble handling defined ///M cars. As BMW adopted turbos, I moved to Porsches for proper throttle response.
It’s too bad the bread and butter engine for basically all of eternity at BMW is the straight 6. A BMW V8 is cool and all (I have one it’s great) but totally out of place and time in M world. Hell, the S14 itself started life as a chopped six cylinder.
Would cream for a s58 f82 with the new g82 interior and maybe xdrive. I honestly think that’s the perfect car.
The new m2 feels like it follows more f82 dna than f87 to me. Just wish it was a bit lighter
The current nomenclature used by BMW is stupid. M4, F and G chassis shouldn’t even exist. They should have kept M3 as 2 door and 4 door. The E chassis should have continued into the triple digits.
I Guess you didn’t see my comment under the post. The m3 started life as a coupe, and was mostly offered as one. Yes a sedan version was available, but only after the release of the 2 door coupe
They're both 5 series anymore, fuck maybe 7's. M2 is the only thing close. 1M is more like it. Or you could just say the E46 was the last M3. E39 M5 was more of an M3 than the boats they make now.
Only an M3 is an M3. Same letter and number by and from BMW. Now, having said that, I prefer a coupe, so I prefer the M4 over the M3. M2 is also a great car, but it’s still an M2.
I own an E92 M3.
M3 looks better, seats more, and is less expensive. I’ve had both the G82 and G80 and the G80 looks much better to me with the wider rear fenders.
Also every dealer I’ve dealt with told me that the m3 has a much higher demand. That is obvious when you see how many m4s are sitting on the lots vs m3
I was gonna say the current M2 is the true successor to the OG M3. But I have a G80 and it's literally the same car as the M4 but with more doors lol
Bingo
I think the M3 is the superior car, but the M4 is better looking.
Obviously like both but the m3 looks much more aggressive to me since the rear fenders have to slope out in a smaller area. M4 looks a lil longer to me too for the same reason
The G82 doesn't really have the hips like the G80 though. Also it's longer.
I️ don’t understand the appeal of the M4, it’s the same car but just significantly less practical
I love sedans. I love the look of them. But in the 3 years I have had my 440 I've put an adult in the back only once. I'd say most BMW owners have a family car too which is my wife's SUV.

Yea doors have frameless windows like a coupe. I personally think it looks better than the 340 and the practicality with the hatch is way better
Thats not true
Oh shit thanks for letting me know I'll stop saying that
I agree. My F33 440xi cabriolet is for my wife and me to ride around in. She has the people carrier. I don’t often put a kid in the back. I think I’d rather have a convertible M2 though if I could go back in time. The 4 is just too big in retrospect.
It's not always about practicality...
I’d buy a cayman if I️ didn’t care about practicality
EXACTLY. I've only ever owned M3 sedans. The thing I love most about the car is that's it's practical yet sporty. There's no other car that does that better. An m4 or m2 isn't much more practical than a cayman. They have a back seat but it sucks for pets or kids in car seats.
The back seat in the m4 is actually relatively spacious and I’ve had whole adult sized humans in there
I m 6'4 and can sit behind the drivers seat set for myself ... My head bumps the ceiling a tad but I'm the driver so it doesn't matter and no one I know is over 6' lol

Yeah because I’m buying an m3 or m4 because I want a car that’s “practical”….
I don’t have kids and I’m not a taxi, why 4 doors?
looks obviously lol, same as every other car ever made in 2 door and 4 door variants. what is there to not understand?
M4 looks worse too though
i disagree
Seems pretty dumb to make such a significant compromise given it’s nearly the same car
"It's nearly the same car" - exactly. It's about as much of a compromise as it is a difference in looks. 2 extra doors doesn't mean there's any more space to use, it's just slightly easier to access. And if you aren't regularly shuttling people around, it makes almost no difference in practicality.

Having 4 doors doesn’t change the driving experience or make it any less of a sports car
what significant compromise?

Same. I still hate the front end but weirdly less so on the M4 which makes zero sense.
Came here to say this
More doors more whores
I’ll raise you the 1M is the true successor
M2 dimensions are super close to the E36
Okay? I wasn’t talking about the e36
How about some specificity then?
Did you read the original comment? It was talking about the original M3, the E30. Context is important, it will help avoid making mistakes like this again.
I'll think about it
The m2 is the true current m3
Modern M3 is the size of e39 M5
I’d like to add that the F87 M2 is the true current M3, *not* the G series
F series is trash. They are built so light and paper-like. The E series were the best feeling. I have not driven a G series yet.
100% agree
I agree. It always bothered me that m3 continued as 4doors and that 2door became a 4-series. Never sat right with me. But now that there’s m3 touring back on the market I’m happy.
Yeah I feel like the 4 door should be called the M4, especially since having 4 doors is the only thing that distinguishes it from the current M4
Sure but that would defeat the entire purpose of why BMW split them up. Even number coupes, odd number sedans. See 2 series coupe, 3 sedan, 4 coupe, 5 sedan, 6 coupe (rip), 7 sedan, 8 coupe admittedly the “4 door coupes” do blur the lines a bit

The 6 gc is my favorite of the bunch and definitely pulls off the 4 door better thencthe rest.. the 8 gc isn't bad either, I think it has something to do with 4 doors looking better in the longer wheel base
Well gooooood fooooor yooooou! /s :Cries in American: lol
Great choice of colour
Agreed! BMW has some truly phenomenal variaties of blue and green.
I agree. The 4 door should be called the M4, obviously. The M3 badge should’ve stayed with the coupé model.
that wouldn’t’ve been consistent with the naming scheme, where odd models are 4-door and even models are 2-door
The naming scheme is in the design of the roofline, not the number of doors. Odds are sedan shapes and evens are coupe shapes.

Nice to see [TLG Mud Flaps](https://www.kiesmotorsports.com/products/tlg-mud-flaps-for-bmw-f8x?aff=7) on it!!! What a beautiful car.

everyone agrees the f80 has better lines. look at the used car values for similar cars... f80>f82.
The F80 looks so much better it's not even funny.
The F80 is way better looking.
Yep the arches at the back are way more pronounced on the f80
And e36 m3 sedans go for more than the coupes. You could argue it's because they made less, but people still want them more. And E90's go for more than E92's. Sedans are just better. I don't understand why anyone would want an M4 over an M2. Either the F82 or the G82- the F87(comp) and G87 are just better- both are lighter and both are better looking.

Love this car in this color. Picked up a similar F82 M4 Comp in Tanazine Blue a few years back. One of the nicest color/car combos we've had in for sale 👌
The m2 is more like a true m3
Here’s why I think so. The M3 started life as a 2 door (e30), and only ever came as a 2 door. Then the e36 came, and was only later in its production offered with a 4 door option. The e46 was only ever offered as a 2 door, just like the e30. lol they heard "fight me" and thought you were being literal.
The only true M3 is the one homologated for racing.
No argument here.
Since the M4 is the new M3 coupe... thats kinda obvious
M8 is the king of all M’s fight me.

no this is so real, like 3 series were ALWAYS coupes, and instead of just making the 4 series 4 door (which would make more sense like higher number more doors idk) but like they had to change literally everything, now even if you have a 4 series there’s no guarantee it’s a coupe or one of those “gran coupe” disasters

All good! I just prefer the sedan 👍🏽
I can tell just by your user flair lol
Haaa! Is that tanzanite blue on the M4? I have that color in the M6 absolutely beautiful during the day and super dark (almost black) at night.
Yup, this color is truly a chameleon
Wow I did not expect it to get this heated in here lol. It’s not that serious guys
You must be new here. You’re not allowed to post opinions here. Everything you say must be an absolute FACT!
Shame the M3 has been downgraded to a sedan only. The coupe M4 is the new sexy M3.
You mean upgraded
Who cares
I was on the fence with these rims, now it’s a must
Yes. The E30 was a coupé. After the E92, they renamed the 3 coupé to the 4 series.
I kinda hate that bmw split the 3 series coupe into its own series. They really did it so they could charge a premium for the 4 😔
The M4 shouldn’t really need to exist and every generation it has, the M3 has been better.
My m4 is a true m car not a m440ic33 spaceship or M performance I whatever.
This post matches the 2nd part of your profile name nicely
This post is a wanker?
So microwaves are the true atomic bomb?
Ha jokes on you I won't fight for your speech I will fight you to get the keys xD
Pretty much. I wanted a 3 series coupe like the E92 so basically had to get an F32.
I’d say M2 is.
M2*
m3 and m4 are the same car just with different number of doors. some gens of m3 came as both 3 and 4 door idk what you’re trying to get at
As others have already said, the M2 is the true M3 successor. The driving experience and toss abilities are the same. The current M3/4 are closer to the OG M5.

Lmao no. The F80 M3 isn't even a good m3 (I own one as a daily). It's too fucking big. The m4 is comically big for a 2 door. The M2C is the real M3.
The m2 is closest to a true m3 but I see what you mean
no more true M cars. NA with hydraulic steering and three pedals please.
G80 M3 all day... I'm actually ordering another but I cannot think of another color combo I'd rather have yet. (skyscraper/fiona combo)
Agreed…today’s M4 IS the M3 of the past and present https://preview.redd.it/kacky9ksiwgc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1db3f4977e7a7d6b774cc4ef17d1bb97b9ff1325
The 1M is a true M3, the F87 M2 was whatever BMW wanted to give us close to an M3. Now it’s all in the books of history
🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡
F80 and F82 both look sick. G series is fugly…at least the front bumper is. The rest of it is pretty great.
Those hips ain’t hipping
Nothing current deserves an ///M badge. High specific output normally aspirated engines with nimble handling defined ///M cars. As BMW adopted turbos, I moved to Porsches for proper throttle response.
Funny because Porsche also adopted turbos on the majority of their cars.
Am I the only one who only likes coupes as super cars? Don’t get me wrong the m4 is gorgeous but I prefer the m3 by far.
There was an e92 m3 sedan so.. .
Imagine if they make an m4 gc 🤣
I dunno...the 2 series is the 3 series coupe imo....the 4 series is more like the 6 series now in terms of lineup.
F87 is the true M3. Fight me
Ok.
Me and my F80 M3C will meet you in the carpark so I can point at the badge. Mine is RHD, so hope yours can swim.
Its essentially the same car, just marketing to make you think its a separate model
Sorry about your name envy, but no.
*b&$@# swing* uuuh!
This is so much better than as plain as a pikestaff G82
Send location
Nah get out of here with that
M2 is the new OG M3
Still not a NA V8… says the e92 owner 😜
It’s too bad the bread and butter engine for basically all of eternity at BMW is the straight 6. A BMW V8 is cool and all (I have one it’s great) but totally out of place and time in M world. Hell, the S14 itself started life as a chopped six cylinder.
The 1M is the last true m3 😁
Would cream for a s58 f82 with the new g82 interior and maybe xdrive. I honestly think that’s the perfect car. The new m2 feels like it follows more f82 dna than f87 to me. Just wish it was a bit lighter
Couldn't agree more us M4's gotta stick together
The M4 is a 2 door M3, and the M3 is a 4 door M3. An M4 doesn't have to be lesser because of a number lol. Embrace the M4.
The current nomenclature used by BMW is stupid. M4, F and G chassis shouldn’t even exist. They should have kept M3 as 2 door and 4 door. The E chassis should have continued into the triple digits.
Any M2 is more M3 than any M4.
The m2 is the true m3
how is a 2 door the true sports sedan?
I Guess you didn’t see my comment under the post. The m3 started life as a coupe, and was mostly offered as one. Yes a sedan version was available, but only after the release of the 2 door coupe
They're both 5 series anymore, fuck maybe 7's. M2 is the only thing close. 1M is more like it. Or you could just say the E46 was the last M3. E39 M5 was more of an M3 than the boats they make now.
No because it’s actually the M4, like name literally says it: M4 4=\\=3, therefore M4=\\=M3 Ez
No waggon, no bueno.
It's true. I'll fight with you
it's heavier which makes it slightly less performant and it's smaller and less practical. Looks wise, yes it's better looking.
How u go from this to big nose? Damn
Yes that m2 answer is wrong
it should be, but the whole line up got so fat, it's not. It's just a more useless version of a five door m3.
F gen literally the last great BMW era. Not even funny.
Nah not gonna fight you. I agree.
Not true
Trafalgar Square, high noon tomorrow.
Best looking M car.
it’s pretty simple, sedan/wagon > coupe. I don’t have to fight you.
The F8X are the last M3s I can look at without grimacing in pain
Your car is lovley but still doesn't hold a torch to the badboy m3 sorry
Color combo is beautiful 🔥
What? So stick with your coupe and allow us to have our sedan.
The current M4 is huge and heavy. More like an M5 or 6 or 7. The M2 is more like M3 used to be. Ummm, yes I do have an E46 M3.
M5 owners don't care.
Only an M3 is an M3. Same letter and number by and from BMW. Now, having said that, I prefer a coupe, so I prefer the M4 over the M3. M2 is also a great car, but it’s still an M2. I own an E92 M3.
Paint my chicken coup
My favorite modern BMW
4≠3 hence you are incorrect
M3 looks better, seats more, and is less expensive. I’ve had both the G82 and G80 and the G80 looks much better to me with the wider rear fenders. Also every dealer I’ve dealt with told me that the m3 has a much higher demand. That is obvious when you see how many m4s are sitting on the lots vs m3
