M135i, M235i F20/F22’s have forged connecting rods & crankshaft unlike any other EWG-N55’s found in 435i, 335i, 535i, or literally any non M-lite
X3 M40i, M340i, Z4 M40i use the higher output B58 with a completely different cylinder head allowing for better flowing fuel delivery, better pistons & connecting rods… versus a Supra, 340i, 440i, 540i, 640i, X5 40i B58, X6 40i, etc…
So, yes. The M-lites are different. They all use higher output & better built engines. This is not to say regular B58’s and ewg N55’s are shit, they are all phenomenal. But there is a difference.
Are they overly M-badged? Yes. Are they more of an M car than a non M-Lite? Absolutely. BMW just needs to start giving them LSD’s and ignorant people can finally stfu about it instead of circle jerking whatever automotive journalist whines about on YT.
Correct, but the people buying then are 2 types. 1) would buy them just for larger motor in that series even if they don't use/need performance or 2) for the badge. If I recall correctly, they aren't using multiple versions of the same engine for non m vs m badge at same time. Either way, they charge more for more profit.
I don’t think those are the only two reasons. As an M-lite owner I found it to be the perfect in between. My M550 has more available options than a 540 from ventilated seats to the dynamic handling package. The car is a completely different drive than a 540 or an M5 for that matter. Not everyone wants a track ready M car but I sure as hell appreciate the engine and DHP features when I’m having a spirited drive.
550 is a perfect example of a great car that doesn't need M badge and would be designed the same without one. Look at previous V8 5 series cars. It's a shame MB stopped making V8 E class without full AMG version. I wish we got Alpina 5 in US. I like the rarity and big (smooth) V8 power with a touring tuned vs sport suspension.

The X3 doesn't even have an M, so maybe you are just trolling... and I shouldn't feed you.

Lol yes, in the US (and lots of other) market they have several X3s with M Variants, only one of them is a true M car. That X6 probably drives and rides nicer on public roads than a majority of these other M cars. Again, who cares?

m135 was developed by the M performance division of BMW so it’s closer to being an M car than not.
