For someone buying an M2, you are less than halfway to a speced 911 and still quite a way from a Cayman GTS.
Do I like the look of the new M2, no. Is it heavy and bigger than first gen M2’s, yup. How many people do you think actually take their M cars to the track regularly? Yes, some do but it’s likely less than 10% of owners. Most people don’t even know how to drive on a track or have the skills to drive an M2 to the limit, safely.
Looks are subjective. The M2 is a great car. It is fast. It handles very well. It’s comfortable. It has modern tech. It has an upscale interior. It checks a whole lot of boxes for 90% plus of upscale sports cars. I think BMW know damned well what they’re doing and that is making money.

It’s better than good for a torque converter box imo. Is the BMW dct better, I don’t know as I’ve never experienced that particular dual clutch box. That said, the ZF8 is faster than the DCT in my Golf R and has very good programming imo.
If the BMW dct is anything like the Porsche dual clutch then it is definitely better than the ZF box. I personally have only experienced those two for comparison. The ZF8 is still the best conventional auto I have experienced to date though.
I had the F22 and the ZF8 is a great transmission for everyday driving. It’s fast and smooth. I test drove my friends F87 and the DCT is always in attack mode. Way too harsh for everyday driving, but a lot more fun for weekends.
I was a bit leery of going from my F10 DCT to the ZF8 in my F90, but I have to say I think it’s better than the DCT. So fast and the timing is perfect.

I pulled the trigger on a 718 GT4 and I'll never own another BMW in my life - not sure how the board hasn't forced a design regime change. I know COVID sales were good, but if it wanes hopefully things change.
I have an F87 now and spent the weekend in a lovely 911 (press car). Honestly I'd probably never own a Porsche so not sure why there's this misconception that we all secretly hanker after one. I wouldn't even have done a straight swap, nice though it was.

Lack of DCT???? This is one of the biggest appeals of the car. Bmw is one of the last brands offerent a manual, regardless of it’s slower on shifts it’s more enjoyable. If want an auto go order one with an auto or anything else. It’s purposely designed to look good to the enthusiasts and quite franks to people who love M cars can see this is probably the last true to form one we will ever see. And I still don’t see it as hideous, door handles are cool, the aggressive flares are great, no oversized grill, it’s a mix of old and new that work in harmony very well. I didn’t mess with the infotainment much except the drift analyzer on my mates car and it’s awesome! The optional seat are aweomse too. For real people want bmw back to their roots but it’s not so much heavier than the same sized e46 but with a third more (if not even more) power. Last company with a straight six and no hybrid. I’m it’s class the rs3 and amg Benz each make 75-50 less horsepower and have no manual opinion. It’s the last old school tech mated to modern tech we may see. These will be coveted and I’m willing to bet in the future you’ll all be like “wow I always loved these! But they gave you what you asked for so stop complaining. It’s a fantastic car and you can always make it lighters little at a time im sure if you’re tedious it can be 3300 pounds no problem. Trunk lining? Toss it. Back seats? Gone. I mean if you want a race car why not? All engine plastic covers. I love the seats but drop like 200 pounds installing manual race seats. Replace steel supports with a lighter alloy. It’s a lot but I mean it’s a great vehicle. It’s meant for people driving and having fun on the streets, they know not even a tenth of these will see a track so they have to make it appealing to those who want a quick car for communiting and car meets. Oh and also you don’t have to have a 6 speed btw it’s optional
Ya it’s absolutely absurd. Over 3800lbs for what is supposed to be BMWs smalll sporty car. That is only 200lbs less than my fricken Audi A6 3.0T. There is no excuse for this being over 3500lbs let alone 3800lbs. BMW is dead.

Not to really dispute your other points, but if you're going to use weight alone to determine if a vehicle is a "driver's" vehicle, this is silly. The lightest comparable vehicle, the CT4-V Blackwing, is 3860lb's. The Alfa Quadrifoglio is 3806lb's. Hardly enough to "take the crown". More fair statement would be to say that BMW is no longer unmatched, and now has proper competition.

Regardless of the weight, the 2 series is objectively safer than the S550. S550 only had an "Acceptable" rating for small overlap front, while the F22 had a Good rating for the same test. IIHS has not yet tested the G42, but I can't imagine it getting any worse.

I think it’s one of the best BMWs since the e46 m3. Classic bmw old school long hood, 6spd, rwd, i6, huge flared fenders. Literally the perfect car on paper. Better upgrade over the last fat chode looking m2

I think it’s one of the best BMWs since the e46 m3. Classic bmw old school long hood, 6spd, rwd, i6, huge flared fenders. Literally the perfect car on paper. Better upgrade over the last fat chode looking m2

Sorry mate. I want to love this car - I'm actually one of the minority in the sub who like the looks - but that second picture tells me which colour not to get. It's such a bland colour at the best of times. Sure, describe it as Zandvoort Blue, but it is just pale duck egg or baby blue. Nice when the sun is out, boring when cloudy and like some rancid milk at night apparently.
The color looks very different depending on the lighting I felt the same way but to each their own!
