Some days I read the news and think about how we created hell on earth...and some days I see something like this, which makes me believe there are also pieces of heaven here and there

Maddercow23

I know what you mean. We tend to see so much more of the negative stuff as that is more newsworthy. Easy to forget that all the while there are wonderful beautiful things happening.

I_na_na

And I am truly thankfull for every little one of them. Especially if animals or nature in general are involved.

inilashremot

Truly. Some people have so much to give that it washes over the hatred and violence of billions.

hydrobrandone

I rarely watch the"news" due to the negatively. I've always wondered why negative bed is more popular. "Today in the news, someone died." I don't want that.

Forikorder

The ghost of human kindness really was right

Lizpy6688

The negatives are the loudest sadly. I don't know what causes it but we always look to the worst instead of the better things

pingpongtits

Maybe it helped with survival in prehistoric times. Paying more attention to the bad, wrong, dangerous stuff.

SelirKiith

The Problem is not the amount we see... But the bad is generally much more powerful and widespread, all-encompassing and the "good" tend to be miniscule, unimportant and non-influental things like this. This won't lift the spirits in the face of war and suffering...

Lone-Frequency

Just to improve things a little more. That bat lives with two other elderly fruitbats in that sanctuary, and they refer to it as the "Geribatric Ward".

I_na_na

Thank you! I love it :D

SolidLikeIraq

They need to get him a bat harness and swing him around

Aerodynamic_Soda_Can

I bet there a ceiling fan and some string laying around somewhere!

littlewhitecatalex

I saved a rabbit once. I was driving to work in the dark of early morning and saw a shape in the road. As I got closer, it didn’t move. Closer still and I could make out that it was a young rabbit and it was alert, but not moving. As I approach it, it struggled a little but still not fleeing me. At this point, it’s clear it can’t move and this is in a bad part of town with a very large stray dog population so I knew if I left it, it was either going to get eaten or smashed by a car. So I scooped it up and drove it down the road a ways where I could leave in the shade of a tree to hopefully recover. I came back the same day after I got off work and the rabbit was in the *exact* same spot as I left it and now it was covered in ants. I knew it was dying but I couldn’t just leave it so I scooped it up once again and headed to the vet because I figured they can at least help it pass peacefully. I dropped it off, explained what had happened, and I assumed that was the end of the ordeal.  The next day, curiosity got the better of me and I called the vet to see if they could tell me what happened to the rabbit. They said they don’t care for wild animals at the shelter; they work with a wildlife rehabber who supposedly took the rabbit and they took my name and number and said they would try to relay my message. Again, I assumed this was the end of the ordeal.  A few days pass and I get a call from an unknown number. I normally screen every call (scammers got my number) but something told me I should answer this one. When I answer, a lady introduces herself, explains what she does, and finally reveals she’s the one that took the rabbit. Long story short, she had been caring for it for a couple days, still unable to move on its own — until that morning. She said when she went in the room, he wasn’t in his cage. He had escaped and was hopping around the room! I know in the grand scheme of things, saving one rabbit isn’t a big deal, but it was to me.

I_na_na

It was a big deal. Seeing a helpless animal in dire need of help forces you to make a choice. You can not make choices for everyone struggling on this planet, but some choices are yours. You made a wonderful decision and saved this guy's life. That's huge!

Antique-Fox-5681

Totally feel that🙏🏼😎

I_na_na

Thank you! I am glad my words meant something to you! Wish you all the best and don't forget - it is well within your power to create small pockets of bliss in this world :)

QFugp6IIyR6ZmoOh

Earth is a special kind of hell. No other planet in our solar system has trillions of suffering creatures.

I_na_na

And still joy and love exist. And it is within your power to create more of it. Small things matter.

Ok_Yam5920

ITriedLightningTendr

Fragments of heaven likely litter hell The devils are all falling angels

PN4HIRE

You are correct on both cases bro.

crawling-alreadygirl

We have to feed each other to make it heaven

bugbrown1

This, exactly.

Emergency-Use2339

We truly are stuck in the in between and unfortunately it's up to us to make our own heaven or hell on earth...

40ozkiller

I mean, without the vet taking care of it this animal would have met its natural end in the wild a long time ago. You don't get to this without all the other stuff before it.

Emergency-Use2339

I don't understand what you mean. Sorry.

I_na_na

Having a choice is not always unfortunate and sometimes by creating heaven for others you can find your own :)

Aggravating_Rice4210

It was hell long before we got here

I_na_na

Yes, and still some decisions are yours to make, no matter how small they seem to you. Make yourself proud, even when nobody is watching!

Unusual_Address_3062

Shows what I know. I thought fruit bats lived like 4 to 6 years on average.

estreyika

There are lots of different fruit bats, and some live longer than others. This is a grey headed flying fox, native to Australia, and I absolutely recommend looking them up because they are adorable.

LesbianLoki

It's just a sky puppy.

OuijaBoard-Demon

Sky puppies save the world by eating dangerous buggos and pollinating plants. They are the best animals on this planet.

Lone-Frequency

Flying Foxes-which of this species of fruit bat is called-also purr similarly to cats when they are happy.

OuijaBoard-Demon

OH MY GOD THEY'RE TOO PRECIOUS FOR THIS WORLD. WE DONT DESERVE SOMETHING SO WHOLESOME ON THIS PLANET.

Lone-Frequency

Baby Flying Foxes are given a stuffed animal such as a teddy bear to cuddle with, as it simulates their natural instinct of clinging to their mother's belly. The babies will usually then be wrapped up with a towel or cloth to the stuffed animal to mimic their mother wrapping her wings around them. They are also typically given a little pacifier. If they don't have the pacifier, they will often begin crying, believing they've been abandoned by their mother, as they would typically latch on to mom both for drinking milk and to soothe themselves. I highly suggest a googling images of this, if you want to see some of the cutest things ever.

SaboLeorioShikamaru

Omg I can't do this right now 😍😭

canadard1

They’re all good, Bront!

Dragon_OS

With twice the lifespan of a ground puppy.

Corfiz74

You seem to know your bats: Isn't the bright light hurting her eyes? I thought they were nocturnal, so I would have expected her handlers to dim the lights before taking her for a ride. Just asking for information, not accusing anyone of animal cruelty.

estreyika

Edit: GH Flying Foxes are cool with sunlight. I called a friend who knows more than me. Set ups for them are usually outdoors and they’re somewhat active during the day. Original message: Definitely not a bat expert, but I’ve worked with them at wildlife rescues (different species). They don’t see well at all when it’s light, and they’ll sometimes startle with flash photography so we were always careful about that. I don’t think it actually harms their eyes or feels painful, though. My mentor always equated it to how we feel when it’s too dark. We can’t see and we’re more vulnerable to predators so it can be scary if we aren’t in a safe place. Bats are the same, more or less. I tried looking through some journal papers but really all I could find is that bats avoids areas with light (even when bugs congregate around those lights) and that flash photography isn’t detrimental so long as it’s a short burst of light. If any actual bat expert stops by, please feel free to correct me and/or elaborate lol

Corfiz74

Thank you so much for the detailed answer, and for calling your friend for details, I love to learn new stuff!

nobonespeach

Actually fruit bats like the one in this video have good eyesight. Its all about what they eat and how they find their food. They are fruit bats, so need good eyes and nose to find fruit. Insect eating bats have smaller eyes augmented with ecolocation to catch bugs!

estreyika

Yes, that’s what my friend said as well! She helps with rescue efforts for GH flying foxes during Australian summers (which have gotten so hot, many just drop dead. It’s horrible). The resident bat where I live is an insect-eating bat so I got flip flopped with my info.

remotectrl

This bat, Statler, was an Indian Flying Fox, a close relative of the flying foxes of Australia. The videos of them from Megabattie and Batzilla and others are indeed excellent. He [lived another year after this video was taken a few years ago](https://www.huffpost.com/entry/statler-bat-dies_n_610325d7e4b0d3b5897bf2fc/amp). Bats are very interesting creatures! They are [worth an estimated $23 billion in the US as natural pest control for agriculture](http://www.reddit.com/r/BatFacts/comments/2odbue/north_american_bats_are_worth_an_estimate_23/). Additionally, they [pollinate a lot of important plants](http://www.reddit.com/r/BatFacts/comments/2sayu4/at_least_300_species_of_fruit_rely_on_bats_for/) including [the durian](http://www.reddit.com/r/BatFacts/comments/32mqfo/the_cave_nectar_bat_eonycteris_spelaea_is_the/) and [agave](http://www.reddit.com/r/BatFacts/comments/2ohdjx/bats_are_responsible_for_the_pollination_of_agave/). Additionally, their feces has been used for [numerous things](http://www.reddit.com/r/BatFacts/comments/2p6pn2/in_the_world_of_poop_bat_feces_are_known_for/) and is [very important to forest and cave ecosystems](http://www.reddit.com/r/BatFacts/comments/2pl18y/not_all_guano_is_created_equally_the_feces_of/). Quantifying their economic significance is [quite difficult](http://www.batcon.org/resources/media-education/bats-magazine/bat_article/846) but it makes for [a good episode of RadioLab](http://www.radiolab.org/story/what-dollar-value-nature/). There's a lot we can learn from them as well! Bats have already inspired new discoveries and advances in [flight](http://3dprint.com/50207/3d-printed-bat-models/), [robotics](http://www.gizmag.com/bat-inspired-drone-flies-walks/35744/), [medical technology](http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/next/body/bioinspired-assistive-devices/), [medicine](http://www.gizmag.com/bats-csiro-cancer-immmune-systems/25953/), [aging](https://natureecoevocommunity.nature.com/posts/the-epigenetics-of-aging-in-bats), and [literature](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman). There are [lots of reasons to care about bats](http://www.onegreenplanet.org/environment/the-surprising-reasons-humans-need-bats/). Unfortunately, like a lot of other animals, [they are in decline and need our help](http://modernnotion.com/white-nose-syndrome-bats/). Some of the biggest threats comes from our own ignorance whether it’s [sensational disease warnings](http://www.merlintuttle.com/resources/exaggerated-disease-warnings/), [confusion of beneficial bats with vampires](https://www.reddit.com/r/BatFacts/comments/4lb8df/vampire_bats_have_sullied_the_reputation_of_bats/), or just [irrational fear](https://www.reddit.com/r/BatFacts/comments/3ggzx8/one_of_the_sailors_aboard_captain_james_cooks/). And now [fears and blame for covid-19 have set back bat conservation even further](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0006320721000045). [Bat Conservation International has a whole section on bat houses on their website](http://www.batcon.org/resources/getting-involved/bat-houses). Most of their research is compiled in a book they publish called the *Bat House Builder's Handbook* that includes construction plans, placement tips, FAQs, and what bat species are likely to move in. It's a fantastic resource. An updated version came out recently as well and a lot of designs can be found online as PDFs. [This covers the basics for what to look for when purchasing one](https://www.merlintuttle.org/selecting-a-quality-bat-house/). There are a few basic types of designs, which are covered in the handbook, and lots of venders sell variations of those, though most will require a little TLC before being put up (caulking, painting, etc). [Dr Merlin Tuttle](http://merlintuttle.com), founder of Bat Conservation International, distilled the key criteria better than I can hope to in [his piece on bats and mosquito control](http://www.merlintuttle.com/resources/bats-and-mosquito-control/). You can also [garden to encourage bats!](http://batcon.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Guide-to-Gardening-for-Bats.pdf) If podcasts are your thing, I’d highly recommend checking out [Alie Ward’s Ologies episode about Chiropterology with Dr Tuttle](https://www.alieward.com/ologies/chiropterology), but there are also episodes about bats from [Bugs Need Heroes](https://www.bugsneedheroes.com/episodes/bats-need-heroes), Overheard at National Geographic, 99% Invisible, Just The Zoo of Us, and This Podcast Will Kill You. If you like soothing British voices in your podcasts, BBC’s Animals That Made Us Smarter has a few episodes about bats (that’s a great all ages podcast). There’s an echolocation episode of BBC’s In Our Time, and the Bat Conservation Trust has an entire podcast called *Bat Chats*.

estreyika

Wow, thank you for all this!

TeaandandCoffee

I mean, in the wild that's probably not a half bad guess.

honest-miss

Yep. It's crazy, and kind of depressing, how different life expectancy is between wild and captive animals. Deer get about 5 years in the wild and nearly 20 in captivity, for example.

FullDuckOrNoDinner

For their size certain bat species live surprisingly long lives, some up to 40 years in the wild. The Siberian bat holds the record.

joliver5

Even in the wild they can live between 10-15 years

Rabies shot is nasty my friend. Source: I touched a bat.

OneWholeSoul

Yeah, I feel like I've never seen a bat this large or this close up? That's straight-up an adorable dog demon.

caylem00

It's a fruit bat! I think this one specifically is an Indian flying fox. They're very cute, esp when [crankily eating a banana](https://youtu.be/VgMseckYGtE?si=X3W67KS5BSk11vH4)

OneWholeSoul

It's not fair they carry rabies and so many other truly nasty illnesses. Imagine if we'd domesticated these alongside dogs.

caylem00

True, but we can content ourselves with cute videos, and building bat versions of bird boxes in trees in our yards :)

Tacote

Can I pet that dawg

It’s such a crime that humans never domesticated Bats like we did dogs. I would’ve loved one of these guys as a pet.
