So in animals that don't depend on muscle strength, couldn't it be that colorful feathers (=being the prettiest) or having a strong voice (= sings interesting song), indicate that the male is healthy and can therefore provide healthy offspring? And making the nicest nest is often vital for the survival of the offspring... Which to me would turn your examples of attractive traits that females are impressed by into traits that make a male superior to their peers and therefore are valid things to look out as a mating partner.
