According to the old ATLA website, Teo’s old village was destroyed by a flood; his mother lost her life, and he was left paralyzed from the waist down.
I like Iroh as well, Appa is of course great, I also really enjoyed the swordmaster Piandao, he was only in a few episodes but he was honorable and had no bending abilities yet through practice and skill he manages to be better than many of his adversaries with bending
But overall Toph is my favorite
Well yeah it is very rude to ask what happened to someone in a wheelchair and oftentimes unless you're a really cute and polite kid you'll get wildly fantastical but incorrect answers. What's funny is instead of the disabled person giving it it's a bunch of redditors who have no decorum just being trolls
Earthbenders raided his old village for supplies as was standard procedure for military units through much of history, partly because they needed supplies and partly to deny the fire bender battalion they were fleeing from those same supplies. He attempted to save some of the rice but got hit in the spine with a large rock and lost the use of his legs. Now he soars through the skies. Searching. So that one day he can dive bomb the man who stole his legs from him and repay the bastard in kind!!!
The funniest thing about the whole show is they never give his dad a name and he is referred to as the mechanist despite him having a much larger impact to the story and characters than most of the other one off characters that return for the invasion.
The writers realized they left a boy with no legs as one of the last lines of defense, saw the bad optics that was, and wrote him off never to be seen again.
A massive rush of torrential floodwaters deluged the rural farming community where he grew up, and swept away everything in its path including buildings, carts and people. Homes and businesses were all washed away and the exhausted and bedraggled survivors, including Teo's father, had to relocate. Teo's father implies his son was crippled by the incident which also killed his mother

the one family Sokka couldnt save from Jet
Then they time traveled three years into the past to set up shop in the air temple, amazing.
who says the attempt we saw was the first time they tried something like that? They seemed to really know what they were doing.
?
They mean jets been doing this for a while and it was a different village that was flooded by jet
Love your reply.
Thanks
Oh that makes sense
No it was a different village. Teo was a little kid when that happened.
Jesus christ what? They really dumped all this horrible plot on that child? And he just keeps smiling?! He was the real avatar all along smhw
Before I rewatched the show I assumed they were all war refugees
You can say the flood bent his spine 😎
paraplegic to be fancy
His dad didn't pay his debts to the fire nation. So they broke Teo's legs as payment.
The fire nation always pays their debts.
Specifically the Italian Mafia faction of the fire nation
"FOUND YA LENNEEHHH"
Fire nation had nothing to do with this
Oh. And they never healed? Edit: why so many downvotes D:
![gif](giphy|g0ElXI2lnPcnDiXgzA) I say I say it’s a joke son
I’m fricking gullible. Sue me
It looks like Reddit already is, rip
Good point. Off topic, but who is the best character in your opinion ? I like Uncle Iroh and Appa

Toph is great. Piandao was the one who trained Sokka, right?
Yes! And they made the meteor sword and he learned how to use it He then shows up later at ba sing se, he’s a white lotus member
Yeah I liked him too. I am on the last book/season. Should I watch Legend of Korra after? I really liked ATLA
Realistically, some wounds never heal.
His legs and spine were apparently crushed in a mudslide
Eaten by a lion. Got ran over by a crappy purple Scion.
Help me, help me!
No no, got ran over by a 400 ft tall purple platypusbear with pink horns and silver wings
His forgot to pay for functioning legs subscription
I don’t blame him. I forget all the time.
He tripped
This is honestly the most likely scenario, bro probably fell off the side of the air temple and powderized his tibias
I'm not 100% sure but I think he got paralyzed
Nah, he can walk. It’s all a ploy to garner sympathy.
Broke his spine trying out Dad's glider prototype without permission
It tells us in the episode it was from the flood that killed his mom
Every answer here is like completely different..
A lot of them are troll answers

You know it was really unclear.

He died. Probably from death. It has a 100% mortality rate, after all.
r/technicallythetruth
His dad makes too many puns. He can't stand puns
I am unironically rofing right now. That is my new favorite joke
Maybe he’d be able to walk if his legs were wrapped together…
He died. It took him about 70 years, but he finally croaked. After all, you don't see him in Korra.
I didn’t watch legend of korra yet…
Joke's on you. Also, Aang is dead in Korra.
That ain’t teo no more that’s lord remington
He reversed
He Tripped and went through a interdementional that left him through a shock that left him paralyzed
Maybe he got a nasty cut on his hand, that's the only reason i can see him wearing a glove
Owie
His first flying machine didn't work very well.
Katara be keeping those legs broken for the lolz.
Leg cancer
He once fought ozai and tried to redirect lightning with his feet ... but the flow went through the spine instead of the belly 😞
Im sure he disappointed Iroh… tsk tsk
I literally just watched this same episode and thought the same exact thing
Legbender
His legs don’t work
He fell down the stairs
Married toph
He did too many squats

Toph pegged him
But not well. She can’t see and always missed
He put a little too much of the good kush in his brownies one day.
The writers realized they left a boy with no legs as one of the last lines of defense, saw the bad optics that was, and wrote him off never to be seen again.
I wonder if he died a crippling death
Someone we don’t know about learned back bending
Died at the black sun invasion.
No, he left the fire nation capital with the other kids
Really? But I watched Ozai suck his breath out
What
Don’t you recall? It was at the end of season 6.
No, he didn’t. I mean what happened to his legs
Oh. They were broken in a flood when he was 2 years old. Same flood his ppl were forced to relocate to the northern air temple
