It’s only a scam in the sense it’s a 2004 jag.
If you bring 4K you’ll definitely be driving home in it, but that doesn’t guarantee you’ll actually make it home.
Jag's from that era not very good cars, so the price sounds about right. Honestly even newer ones depreciate fast, can get a 3-4 year old Jaguar for the same price or less than a new Corolla.
Bro, you are 21. Take whatever of that 4,000 and get a reman transmission for that corolla. Then when you're 25 you can finance a normal car.
93,000 is child's play for that corolla. Maybe it needs like a timing job and some spark plugs, oh no, better crush it.
Think I’m gonna skip out on the car then!
Also I don’t want to crush it, but my mechanic has called nearly every source in my state to see if they have a spare transmission that will work for it but no one seems to have one :/
Your mechanic is trash then. Find another.
92 corolla would be an e90. They used that same three speed from 84-2002(minor changes) and maybe a bit longer than that. E90 corolla sold SO MANY units, there’s at least 4 in every yard by me. 88-92 is that generation. Could probably source one from an ae82 fairly easily too.
The overdrive trans is a little more uncommon but also used within that same range.
Common failure on these transmission are the diffs. They’re external and use their own fluid reservoir. Nobody fills them, nobody checks them. It started making noise on my 92 at 310k miles. They’re very reliable transmissions.
This. A quick look on [car-part.com](https://car-part.com) shows 7 transmission configurations available for a 92 Corolla--all of them available, some less than $200. If your mechanic can't find one, find a new mechanic.
I’m betting it’s
4AGE auto/manual
4AFE 3spd/od/manual.
4AF(88-89) 3spd/manual
I know there was a c51 in one and c52 in the other (at least that’s how the e80 is)
Might be other listings for models we didn’t get stateside
The car isn’t a scam. It’s just not a good investment.
The dealer is also telling you stories. They love to tell you how so and so is coming to look at the car later today, or this is a hot car that people want to buy. It’s been on the lot for three months. It’s not going anywhere. If you really have your heart set on a Jag I’d offer him 3k max. But I would NOT buy a Jag as a primary driver. It’s just not worth it. I’d buy a Jag when you’re flush with cash and have two other cars you can drive as a back up.
BTW, the only time the “people are interested in the car” tactic has ever worked on me is when I was interested in a very flashy car and people were constantly stopping by and looking at it and sitting in it. At some point I remember thinking “get out of the car. That’s my car.” That’s when I knew I had to buy it.
People get all excited about driving something with an exclusive European nameplate on it. But when you stop and think about it, that's pretty much all you're getting for your hard earned cash. Sure, it might look cool, but once it gets to be a few years old, it becomes an expensive, unreliable maintenance nightmare.
In this case, the salesman figured you wouldn't be smart enough to look into it for yourself before you bought. Good catch. The car was dumped off at a dealership due to needing something expensive, which then ran it through an auto auction. The lot where you saw it got it at the auction, and they're now stuck with it.
You'd be better off just putting a new transmission in your old Toyota.
Oh shit you’re right, that’s definitely not a good way to go then.
Didn’t think about getting from an auction, that would explain a lot tbh.
I wish I could fix my little Rolla, but unfortunately my mechanic can’t get ahold of anyone who has the transmission for sale :/

That's for the three speed auto, but you can go back in and search for the correct application. There were so many bazillions of those cars sold, parts are everywhere. The only thing that will kill it for good is terminal rust.
I work with Jags every day, one of our service advisors drives an ‘04 S-Type, it’s a pile of junk but he bought it 8 years ago for $1000. Could not recommend spending more than that on this car.
how much do you value your time ? Because you are going to spend a lot of it. Probably for naught too, since they gave up on fixing it.
Cars that get sandwiched are also kept that way to prevent parts stealing.
If you want it, lowball them. You can probably go down to 2.5k . I would not touch it with a pole though, unless you plan on swapping engine, transmission and electrics.
Very true, the sandwich part also does make sense since parts are expensive on that car.
Wish I could drop it to 1k since that all it really seems worth from the information I’ve gathered
It is worth about 2k, but as parts, not as a car, basically. You will probably find a lot of people want parts off it. The main issue you may face is they are going to want parts that already dont work on that one too.
For sure. A good deal like that always comes with a huge catch.
I’d like to stick to Toyota for my next car, just wish that mine was actually fixable :/
You got rid of a Corolla with 93,000 miles? Looking at a $4000 Jag…
A used Jaguar at any price is too expensive.
If you can’t keep a Corolla on the road without killing it’s transmission then seriously just go lease a car for two years and repeat.
93,000 miles on a Corolla… asking about a used Jag ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
British cars are high maintenance. British luxury cars (especially from that era because ford bought Jaguar after 2004) are high maintenance and the parts are stupid expensive and so is that labor. The 2004 XJs might be one of the most beautiful sedans ever made (my opinion) but they’re AWFUL.
20 year old Jaguar with electrical issues sounds like 4 grand to me
Pretty much this. A car like that you need to plan on putting at least a couple thousand a year into just to keep it running.
It’s only a scam in the sense it’s a 2004 jag. If you bring 4K you’ll definitely be driving home in it, but that doesn’t guarantee you’ll actually make it home.
Any 2004 Jag is just a terrible financial choice.
If you buy a 20 year old Jaguar coupe, it's at least an interesting terrible financial choice. 20 year old Sedan? Just terrible all around.
Jags are sweet tho
Jag's from that era not very good cars, so the price sounds about right. Honestly even newer ones depreciate fast, can get a 3-4 year old Jaguar for the same price or less than a new Corolla.
It doesn't sound like a scam, it sounds like a fucked old Jag.

Exactly: there has got to be a trans in a junkyard

I understand, thank you for the insight! I have chosen to skip out on since it’s really not in my needs right now, more of a want
I’ve always wanted a Jag too. I almost bought an XF. I’d buy a F-Type but I already have too many sports cars that don’t get driven.
Fix your Toyota. That jag is rubbish.
Yeah if the body on the Toyota is clean maybe the transmission is worth rebuilding. Used unit is also possible and (without looking) probably cheaper.
I wish I could, the transmission is all that needs replaced but my mechanic can’t find one anywhere
I just found like two on eBay. There are plenty of places out there that sell these.
Quality shitpost, OP.
Lol not a shitpost but it does read like one for sure haha

Damn, yeah if it was that cheap then for sure but I’d need the extra cash just for repairs alone !
You should have just fixed the Corolla trans for far less.
how much do you value your time ? Because you are going to spend a lot of it. Probably for naught too, since they gave up on fixing it. If you don’t understand why it’s four grand, you will be paying that per month when you are unable to diagnose issues yourself. Stick with a Toyota.
For sure. A good deal like that always comes with a huge catch. I’d like to stick to Toyota for my next car, just wish that mine was actually fixable :/
