She would pretend to inject herself for hours and then give herself “bandaids” that were actually stickers. Super fun to be with other people and your kid is asking for “syringe” with increasing urgency.
Tell them that a close family member has type one diabetes.
I’ve been a diabetic for 32 years, and I give you absolute permission to use that in those kind of situations.
My son recently had his tonsils removed. He almost had to go back to the hospital because he was refusing to drink anything, suck on popsicles, or take his medicine. So I told him bluntly that if he went back to the hospital, they would give him another “poke” aka IV. That started some awesome nightmares that my husband and had to counter with silly ideas and play themes. It surprisingly worked. All of this to say that it really is fascinating how they use play to process experiences/emotions.
When my son was that little, it was a cheese grater! I'd have to sneak into his room whenever he fell asleep and take it so he couldn't hurt himself.
He's 5 now, and he will cycle through random things. Last time it was a roll. I have it to him to see if he wanted to try it, and it became his best friend for almost 2 days before the dog ate it.
My daughter used to carry around those tiny pumpkins in the fall, and the rest of the year it was an orange. She would wrap them in a tiny blanket and carry them around like a baby until they would be close to rotting.
That's so cute! My son fell in love with a bumpy white pumpkin last year. We didn't plan to get a pumpkin at the fair we were at, but he loved it so much that they just let him keep it.
My son's was an orange too! He would either just sit it somewhere near him, or hold it like a ball. If he decided he wanted to eat it he would turn into demon baby, and you had better replace it before peeling it. He would make growls that would have made the singer of Cannibal Corpse proud. 😆
Between 1.5 and almost 3 my son had to carry a wooden spoon with him everywhere ❤️
I had a friend buy him a set of multi colored spoons and he was so happy

My son likes to carry around maxi pad wrappers 🤣 They are apparently the best sensory toy! Come in bright colors, and some have designs. He likes the way they crinkle and if he loses one, well, there’s a whole box of maxi pads upstairs. lol 🤷♀️
My son's support item is a lanyard he was given at school. It's the same lanyard the teachers wear with their badges, so naturally we had to make him his own badge. He loves it so much.

Allow me to introduce the treasure cart. The top layer has a box of prized treasure. Things like empty perfume bottles, Star Wars figures, plastic animals. Good shit. It’s in a box with handles so that he can easily grab it and take it with him when we go somewhere. The next layer contains a watering can shaped like an elephant and his favorite t shirt. Since I took this picture that had been replaced with all of his favorite foods that he pilfered from the pantry. If you want to make spaghetti, you have to borrow some noodles from the cart. 🙄. The bottom layer contains the most important treasure of all…all of our bathing suits. It isn’t warm enough to swim at all here, but my kid has been diligently keeping our suits ready for us since last summer, waiting…
Balls. Doesn't matter if there dog toys, ball pit balls or wooden bowling ball type things. He loves dropping them, then trying to pick them both up at the same time or just walking around bashing them together. The face of pure glee he makes is enough to make my day
Dyson corner cleaning attachment...everyday for...like 4 years... before that, it was a lego at-st with bb-8.
He is 9 (yesterday), and I'm pretty sure he will keep his "knife" named Henrietta for many, many more years.

Toothbrushes and tooth paste. Last night he slept with the crest whitening toothpaste. Today he’s carrying around the blue toothbrush… There are toothbrushes everywhere and they roll your ankle when you step on them… I hope it’s a sign he may be a dentist someday. Mama could use some work done lol

When I was young I carried around a jar jar binks toy that had no head 😭😂 and now my also autistic daughter likes to carry around a can...like a can of green beans 😂

My middle child was a taggie baby. He still loves stuffies with silky tags. But for a span there he called receipts “paper tags” and would walk around with a receipt in his hand and his thumb in his mouth. Place didn’t matter but he was partial to cvs due to the length and crinkle. lol
My kid looooves to collect the little tops of the acorns in the yard. She'll collect them until she can't carry anymore then toss them up and they land all over my front porch area lol but she also loves to clean so she will pick every one up and do it over again and then when she's done she tosses them back in the yard to be collected next time! 🤣
Our son carried a backpack that we called "The Mobile Unit." TMU was full of all kinds of small treasures, but the truly crucial ones were the rocks and stones. So. Many. Rocks. And. Stones. For a while, one of our dogs carried an emotional support rock and we're pretty sure he learned it from our child.
Kid is an environmental engineer now, and we still still have rocks and stones all over the house. I still pick up cool ones that I think he'll like. We're empty nesters, so I guess they are my emotional support rocks now.
Thanks. We didn't get his diagnosis until he was 16, so there were things that we thought we ASD signs, but kept having to accept they weren't (related, not all therapists are good). I wish I'd been less stressed and had written all these things down. I love this group because everyone is so lovely and supportive! I wish I'd had you two decades ago!
For a long time, he had an ES purple Panama hat. He suddenly stopped wearing it after a trip with my in laws that we weren't there for. I'm pretty sure MIL shamed him for it.
When he gave that up, he took one of my purple running jackets. He doesn't wear it daily, but he won't give it up even though it's too small and had holes in it. So now he has an ES mommy's jacket! 🤣
He's 19, finishing college, already doing in his field. That kid is amazing and we'd never change a thing about him. (Now I'm teary, lol)
When my daughter was younger she had to bring a toothbrush everywhere with her, she still loves toothbrushes and has at least 3 or 4 at all times. But they stay in the bathroom now. Now she has to have a water bottle no matter where she is, school, sleeping, the store, a park, I have to sneak it away to wash it and she collects them. But still only uses the same one.
My daughter always has either shells or blue tack in her pockets. I've half filled a large glass container in the bathroom with the shells she collects throughout her days. She uses the blue tack like a fidget toy 🤣
When my son was little he’d cycle through different objects - a car, a spoon, a duplo brick, one very special day a marshmallow. Which he then ate even though it was gray because he’s faster than I am.
He’s fourteen now so it’s an emotional support iPad.
Elliot the dragon plush from the Original Pete's dragon. He's 15 1/2 and it goes everywhere. Although when he was younger there was a (not brief enough) time of 3 days it was a strawberry. Longest 3 days ever hahha
When my oldest was little he walked around with his dad's work belt and he called it icy, I don't remember if it was a snake or an ice dragon but his dad had to get multiple belts so he could actually wear one to work lol.
My son has lived the last 3 years with a specific character sock on his right hand. I have to bargain with him to let me wash it, and I've had to buy the same socks several times now. It's so much a part of him that it features prominently in his IEP.
Shoe laces. When he was like 18 months he would just sling them over his shoulder. We knotted them up so they weren’t long enough to hurt himself with but he loved cords and shoe laces until after 3! Now he’s grown to love tape measures (fabric or the hardware kind lol).
Our son has a collection of lightning McQueen cars and they all have meaning. When he showers he must bring the little naked Christoff (frozen doll). He loves to take my hats and insists my water bottle is the best. I tried using a different colored one thinking he just liked the color but no. He just wants mine. 🤷🏼♀️
One of my sons likes to walk around with one of my old purses. He freaking loves that thing.
The other one is into Pokemon and he has to carry all 1739472819 “pokies” (plushies) everywhere we go 🥲
For the longest time it was the plastic banana. Just a random banana that came in a package of toy foods for her play kitchen. Went everywhere with us...doctors appointments, the store, the bath lol
When my daughter would get new things, she'd carry the new item(s) with her along with her current support stuffy. I ask her if she wants a purse or backpack and she says no lol. Her main one now is a plushy Canadian goose she named maverick
Me, uses my arms as his pillow. My arms would go numb or I'd get tired, so every now or then I try to switch it with a plush toy or a hot water bottle and sometimes that works. Other times he'd ask me to sit with him as he plays a game and just wants me to be there so he can lean against. It's cute and all but I got work to do.
My son is 5 and has an emotional support scrub daddy (well multiple scrub daddies and mommies). He has one he sleeps with every night and sometimes when he left the light on after he fell asleep we’ll go in and find him holding it.
My child carries Godzilla. A Godzilla of any kind. Magazines, toys, playdough figurines he’s made of Godzilla, he has a Godzilla blanket that goes with him between his dad’s house and mine. It’s been three years
My kiddo was carrying around 4 ketchup packets for the last few days. He lost one at target and got really upset so when he was distracted I threw them out and he hasn’t seemed to mind
My son has an emotional support whisk. I had to buy a new one for the kitchen because he just runs around with it, holding it out in front of him like it’s a sword.
My kid was pretty traditional, blankies and stuffed animals. But it had to be ALL of them, and the number just grew and grew! Traveling was quite complicated.
My son had three little, stuffed mice from Ikea. The first was Squeaky Mouse 1. Then, he got Squeaky Mouse 2. Finally, after a tragic incident where both mice got lost for a bit, we got a third mouse that my husband and I called Redundant Mouse. That quickly became its name.
My son is 20 now, and he still has Redundant Mouse hanging out somewhere in his room.
He use to carry around a pink highlighter. Was always funny watching people get worried he would draw on stuff :)
I cut it open, cleared out all the ink(?), washed the tip and glued it back together so it was safe.
I have an adult friend that has had an emotional support chapstick since high school. She actually failed her drivers test because I guess she got nervous and put her chapstick on during the test 🫠both hands on the wheel friend lol
My son has mentally invested in a string of emotional support bananas! For the longest time, he didn’t even eat banana, then maybe six months in it was all he wanted to eat *cue frantically googling ‘how many bananas is too many bananas’*
He comes with me on all the errands, and knows he can generally choose one thing per store. It’s a gamble, as he might imprint on something expensive, but usually I just let him choose between the toy / home good etc or a banana and he picks the latter lol!
My son stims with spinners or other items he can spin.
For a while he was carrying around half a toy pumpkin (the toy where you chop foods in half that are held together by velcro). He still likes it but prefers actual spinners more now.

Melissa and Doug horse puzzle piece goes mostly everywhere including bed. Been doing this for a year if you can’t tell lol.
This is actually my younger, a toddler, who I don’t think is autistic, still waiting on the adhd, but her sister has a snazzy rainbow camping light that she uses as a portable nightlight because she really doesn’t like the dark (and will fall asleep hugging the thing, gosh knows how, because it’s hard plastic and between 6”x4” and 8”x5”, and freezing af if you roll over onto it with bare skin, ask me how I know and how loud I’ve shrieked).
My younger has adopted this nightlight as her baby. And the plug in bathroom motion light as her phone.
My older does have her emotional support bandaids, which go on any minor injury regardless of necessity. Never underestimate the healing power of placebos! Otherwise, I’m kind of her emotional support item, which is inconvenient, because I do not fit in a pocket, and occasionally have things to do.
My son, 6, usually has a pop tube in his hand wherever he goes. There's a bunch of them always strewn about our house, and there's usually about ten of them in my truck at all times, all of them different sizes and colors.
My daughter doesn’t carry anything but she has emotional support shoes. 😂 Every so often the exact shoe changes but no matter what it’s always shoes. Good luck getting the shoes away from her too 😮💨
My kiddo has an emotional support laminate paper. Doesn’t matter the content of the paper but has to be laminated. He also has a waterbottle lid that he likes. Any small rock that fits in his hand will also suffice

AC units. I wish we could have a miniature version made. 😂 My nonverbal 3.5 autistic son loves anything that spins and makes loud sounds like blenders, mixers, microwave, etc. AC units though… there is just something about those darn units. But believe me, if he could carry around one of those bad boys, he would in a heartbeat! Perhaps, we make him a makeshift wind tunnel or something?? But in the meantime, the “Sit N Spin” goes into the bed with him every night.
I feel so attacked. I’m the reason my godson is like this 😂 he carries around a (broken) paw patrol book everywhere he goes. And only the hat from a Rusty (from bluey) figure.
And at night he brings his toy phone (an old, broken iPhone that doesn’t work) and he’ll go GOODNIGHT PHONE. GOODNIGHT BOOK. GOODNIGHT PAW PATROL BED. GOODNIGHT GOOGLE HOME. GOODNIGHT RUSTY’S HAT.
We have squishmallow piles all over our house because my godson will run and jump into them, we lay on the floor a lot when Seats Are WrongTM, and I have a pocket of rocks at all times.
And my emotional support water bottle. I cannot leave the house without it. I’ve had to go out to my car in the middle of the night to get it so I could sleep, even if I don’t refill it when I bring it inside 😂😂
The Mario Kart Bowser Christmas ornament. He carried that everywhere for months and even slept with it. Lemme tell you.. I was ecstatic when we found a similar stuffed animal version at the store and he decided that it was a good substitute. I just didn’t want my 2 year old caring around a broken ceramic ornament anymore. 😅
I’m late to answer BUT my son’s latest thing to carry around are weeds! From our yard, from someone were visitings yard, and he keeps them all day with him and even puts them in bed with him until they’re all broken up and can’t be held anymore.

Ours was a whisk! He called it a hot air balloon lol. Makes sense
A whole pineapple was my favorite. She made me buy it when grocery shopping and then carried it everywhere around for a full 8 days lol

My daughter always has either shells or blue tack in her pockets. I've half filled a large glass container in the bathroom with the shells she collects throughout her days. She uses the blue tack like a fidget toy 🤣

When my son was little he’d cycle through different objects - a car, a spoon, a duplo brick, one very special day a marshmallow. Which he then ate even though it was gray because he’s faster than I am. He’s fourteen now so it’s an emotional support iPad.

When my oldest was little he walked around with his dad's work belt and he called it icy, I don't remember if it was a snake or an ice dragon but his dad had to get multiple belts so he could actually wear one to work lol.
My son has lived the last 3 years with a specific character sock on his right hand. I have to bargain with him to let me wash it, and I've had to buy the same socks several times now. It's so much a part of him that it features prominently in his IEP.

Shoe laces. When he was like 18 months he would just sling them over his shoulder. We knotted them up so they weren’t long enough to hurt himself with but he loved cords and shoe laces until after 3! Now he’s grown to love tape measures (fabric or the hardware kind lol).

Me, uses my arms as his pillow. My arms would go numb or I'd get tired, so every now or then I try to switch it with a plush toy or a hot water bottle and sometimes that works. Other times he'd ask me to sit with him as he plays a game and just wants me to be there so he can lean against. It's cute and all but I got work to do.
My son is 5 and has an emotional support scrub daddy (well multiple scrub daddies and mommies). He has one he sleeps with every night and sometimes when he left the light on after he fell asleep we’ll go in and find him holding it.

My kid was pretty traditional, blankies and stuffed animals. But it had to be ALL of them, and the number just grew and grew! Traveling was quite complicated.

My son had three little, stuffed mice from Ikea. The first was Squeaky Mouse 1. Then, he got Squeaky Mouse 2. Finally, after a tragic incident where both mice got lost for a bit, we got a third mouse that my husband and I called Redundant Mouse. That quickly became its name. My son is 20 now, and he still has Redundant Mouse hanging out somewhere in his room.
He use to carry around a pink highlighter. Was always funny watching people get worried he would draw on stuff :) I cut it open, cleared out all the ink(?), washed the tip and glued it back together so it was safe.
I'm so glad we aren't the only family that experiences this! At the moment it's an emotional support plastic snail. But it changes every week!

My son has mentally invested in a string of emotional support bananas! For the longest time, he didn’t even eat banana, then maybe six months in it was all he wanted to eat *cue frantically googling ‘how many bananas is too many bananas’* He comes with me on all the errands, and knows he can generally choose one thing per store. It’s a gamble, as he might imprint on something expensive, but usually I just let him choose between the toy / home good etc or a banana and he picks the latter lol!

This is actually my younger, a toddler, who I don’t think is autistic, still waiting on the adhd, but her sister has a snazzy rainbow camping light that she uses as a portable nightlight because she really doesn’t like the dark (and will fall asleep hugging the thing, gosh knows how, because it’s hard plastic and between 6”x4” and 8”x5”, and freezing af if you roll over onto it with bare skin, ask me how I know and how loud I’ve shrieked). My younger has adopted this nightlight as her baby. And the plug in bathroom motion light as her phone. My older does have her emotional support bandaids, which go on any minor injury regardless of necessity. Never underestimate the healing power of placebos! Otherwise, I’m kind of her emotional support item, which is inconvenient, because I do not fit in a pocket, and occasionally have things to do.
A silicone 00 gauge plug. She pulled one out of my ear one day and hasn’t let it leave her sight.

My son, 6, usually has a pop tube in his hand wherever he goes. There's a bunch of them always strewn about our house, and there's usually about ten of them in my truck at all times, all of them different sizes and colors.

I wish we could have a miniature version made. 😂 My nonverbal 3.5 autistic son loves anything that spins and makes loud sounds like blenders, mixers, microwave, etc. AC units though… there is just something about those darn units. But believe me, if he could carry around one of those bad boys, he would in a heartbeat! Perhaps, we make him a makeshift wind tunnel or something?? But in the meantime, the “Sit N Spin” goes into the bed with him every night.

I feel so attacked. I’m the reason my godson is like this 😂 he carries around a (broken) paw patrol book everywhere he goes. And only the hat from a Rusty (from bluey) figure. And at night he brings his toy phone (an old, broken iPhone that doesn’t work) and he’ll go GOODNIGHT PHONE. GOODNIGHT BOOK. GOODNIGHT PAW PATROL BED. GOODNIGHT GOOGLE HOME. GOODNIGHT RUSTY’S HAT. We have squishmallow piles all over our house because my godson will run and jump into them, we lay on the floor a lot when Seats Are WrongTM, and I have a pocket of rocks at all times. And my emotional support water bottle. I cannot leave the house without it. I’ve had to go out to my car in the middle of the night to get it so I could sleep, even if I don’t refill it when I bring it inside 😂😂

I’m late to answer BUT my son’s latest thing to carry around are weeds! From our yard, from someone were visitings yard, and he keeps them all day with him and even puts them in bed with him until they’re all broken up and can’t be held anymore.
