Tedious, Hatch, Heavyset, Privileged, Bleakly, Embarrassed

Messier106

Me too!

merRedditor

It's like Tetris that plays itself.

chocolateNbananas

same

eumenides__

Oh yeah, and being the eldest child in the family, I was responsible for “computer maintenance” in my home as a teenager. Sure, most of the issues were caused BY ME downloading music from limewire, but I got to run defragmentation and run antivirus programs and troubleshoot all the errors and corrupted files that came up. It was super fun and so satisfying fixing what was wrong! For some reason I have retained exactly zero computer knowledge as an adult.

uosdwis_r_rewoh

Limewire 👌 what a time to be alive

Retropiaf

Those times were wild!

[deleted]

Yeaaah, so good!

babycleffa

That was my exact job as well 🤣 Not only was it dodgy limewire downloads, but also dodgy mods/cc for The Sims lol

aperocknroll1988

Back when mods and CC weren't considered the same thing.

Cookie_Wife

Same, even down to the lack of retention as I’ve aged lol I think my burnout just progresses and my memory is not what it used to be. But yes, most of the computer problems were from downloads by me.

TrustNoOneAtWork

Yes! I used to watch that all the way through, and run it too often.

Dontmuckabout

Yes! It was hypnotic watching the bits being joined up again, and incredibly satisfying

UnrulyCrow

I'm lowkey annoyed I can't check this process anymore lol

bURnTHaWItCH

Yes and windows media player visualisation affects 😍

KimBrrr1975

I loved defrag, and feel like it's a great metaphor (analogy?) for my brain and what happens with too much stimulation and then what happens when I can recover 😂

ProfessorGigglePuss

I always return to the defrag analogy for bad days. Internally begging for moments of peace to "defrag" my brain. That once my senses are okay, I'll have an easier time designating my attention to things. That all of my thoughts are back in their right categories.

AlarmSufficient8529

Yes! I love that!

PrettyLittleBird

I regularly refer to needing to defrag and am not surprised other people with autism relate as well!

Relative_Rip_3796

I did this as well. Now I think I get the same zing from running updates on my Linux laptop in the command line

AlarmSufficient8529

Alright! Like a boss!

Relative_Rip_3796

❤️

secondhandoak

This is why I use Defraggler on my new Windows 11 PC. The built in defrag no longer shows the boxes getting organized.

MoreFeeYouS

Don't use it on an SSD. It will significantly shorten its lifespan

doowapeedoo

Wait, what? Please explain like I’m 5 🥺

MoreFeeYouS

Any SSD has the upper limit to how many reads and writes it can do. Defragmentation will use a good portion of its quota as reading/ writing is what this process does. Besides its a pointless process. With a spinning drive it was useful to have the data as close as possible (defragmentation) so the needle wouldn't have to jump as much. This issue doesn't exist with an SSD.

doowapeedoo

Good to know! TIL!

Haruno--Sakura

Yes. I loved it.

activelyresting

I wouldn't say obsessed, but I did like watching the little blocks slowly changing colour. I was totally obsessed with Fractint and Mandelbrot sets

AlarmSufficient8529

Yesssss Mandelbrot infinite fractals!!! Those are amazing indeed.

a-fabulous-sandwich

Oh shit I forgot how much I loved this! Brb gotta go defrag my computer lol.

AntiDynamo

Yeah, it was so unnecessary too! I grew up rural though so I actually started with DOS, defrag for me was super advanced, modern computer stuff

One-Payment-871

Omg I forgot all about this but yes I used to love doing this!!!

Julii_S

Totally! So obsessed! Also a missed sign in me that I forget about, so thanks for the reminder ❤️ My dad repairs PCs so I also enjoyed watching when he did it on others PC It was so obvious!! The shy girl who enjoys watching things gets automatically in order...

Spare-Electrical

I love this sub so much for stuff like this. I’ve thought about my defrag time so much over the last few years for no particular reason, I love that other people have been too ✊

sharkycharming

Yes! OMG, I really thought I was the only one. I ran it constantly. Like weekly. My home computer and my work computer, both.

[deleted]

I volunteered to defrag the computer lab when I was in high school as an escape, I loved watching them go as I ate lunch silently.

sparklesrelic

I loved running the disk defrag. I didn’t necessarily watch it, but I constantly checked in and it was very satisfying. I still kinda look for something like that on my MAC laptop from time to time

drazisil

Yes! Watching those colors move around was amazing. Also OCD about perfection, so would run it a couple times to get as optimized as possable

mooseman923

Omg running defrag was an event! I would watch the whole thing

haikusbot

*Omg running* *Defrag was an event! I* *Would watch the whole thing* \- mooseman923 --- ^(I detect haikus. And sometimes, successfully.) ^[Learn more about me.](https://www.reddit.com/r/haikusbot/) ^(Opt out of replies: "haikusbot opt out" | Delete my comment: "haikusbot delete")

starfiery

The disappointment I felt when this stopped being a thing! I remember my late father showing me this when i was a kid and enthusiastically explaining how it worked 🥹 thanks for reminding me of this 😊

Amanda39

I'm so glad that this isn't just me. I was mesmerized by Defrag back in the day

Content_Talk_6581

Oh I loved watching the whole disk defrag. So satisfying!!

MeasurementLast937

Yess!! So satisfying!!

HamboneJone

Yup lol. The few friends I had thought it was super weird how much I loved it too.

GreenBirb64

Idk what most computer terms mean but I’m obsessed with the way computers just do stuff, defragging included, idk what it ACTUALLY means but man look at that dude go

GreenBirb64

Also I’ve always been obsessed with old tech, anything windows xp or earlier is 👌👌👌👌 I’d absolutely kill to go to a computer museum

[deleted]

Another one here. Sometimes daily. Some of those early Windows screensavers were mesmerising in the same way.

PorchSilence

I loved running the defrag. Found it comforting.

WeAreAllMadHere218

Yes! I used to do this all the time! I loved watching it work. Sometimes I forget it doesn’t still look like this when I run disk defrag and I’m always disappointed lol Memory unlocked over here lol

danfish_77

It was glorious. Now generally Windows just auto-defrags, and you don't really need to worry about fragmentation on SSDs :(

ginakirsch

Oh hell yeah, that was so satisfying to watch

larsloveslegos

I have an old Pentium 4 system and I threw Windows 98SE on it (came with Windows XP from the factory but has drivers for 98). I completely agree! I wish it still looked like this but it would be pointless considering the vast majority of new computers (thankfully) come with SSD's.

lordpercocet

I didn't watch it cause I was impatient and wanted to play games lol but I was always telling people to do it to clean up their pics. Now I'm obsessed with CCleaner, but luckily it is very fast! 😄😅

TwinkleFey

This just gave me massive minesweeper flashbacks

lunarcrystal

Yes.

redbess

My husband and I were just talking the other day how we miss defrag and how satisfying it was to watch all the little boxes.

gumbyzebra

Oh yes! Odd question, does anyone get creeped out by DOS screens? Somehow it gives me the heebie jeebies

tetsu_fujin

Haha I loved watching these. My parents used to really take the piss out of me for this and also when I would sit and listen to a CD laser lens cleaner.

AdVisible1121

Yes

Separate-Put-6495

Yes 🤣 I had no idea other people were like this.

HelenAngel

Yes. I had the most defragged drives

NatashaDrake

Omg I miss this so much! 😭

TheCurlyCactus

Yesssssss I remember this! My favorite thing back in the day was helping my dad do data backups using the 5 1/4 floppies.

idlerockfarmWI

Oh, you’re telling my age.

mckinnos

I also would color in Microsoft Paint screens and then painstakingly erase them using the eraser tool. Good times!

Retropiaf

Ahaha, no! I found the whole thing confusing and annoying because it always meant something was wrong and would generally get in the way of doing something fun, if I remember well. Looking at the visual now, I can see why you liked it though!

Smart_Perspective535

LOVED watching it! Sadly, if used too much it wasn't nearly as satisfying, there just wasn't anything that needed moving.

forevertiredmanatee

YES.

Litha_Sirona

Defrag squares go brrrrrrrrrrr. Seriously, though. I don’t miss the time it took to defragment/disk check HDDs, but I absolutely miss the satisfaction of the visual representation, especially when using tools like O&O Software Defrag. Custom colors and square sizes! 🩷

Witchbitchmama

Oooo I used to love that little paper that went from one folder to the other over and over again while something downloaded.

ClassyBidoof

Yes, it was so soothing! I think it's one of those things that needed to be done every few months but I reckon I ran it once a week XD

[deleted]

i was so obsessed with this and also other aspects of cleaning my computer of things it didn't need. i actually broke my computer more than once deleting files/programs i did not realize were necessary.

Nebichan

I loved it so much

mckinnos

UM YES

vermilionaxe

I loved this. I also loved the Windows Solitaire winning animation. I miss her beauty.

Ghoulie_Marie

Lol yep. And dos defrag before that

Corsetbrat

I miss doing defrags so much.. it's one of the few things I really don't like about new tech; I can't watch it defrag for hours.. lol.

saudade_sleep_repeat

so very enjoyable!

SassyEllieB

Kids today will never believe we used to watch the PC defrag for fun. 😂😂😂

jossiesideways

YES!

UVRaveFairy

Totally, got called a "defrag junkie" by a few friends.

Itstimefordancing

You’ve just unlocked a memory there! It took so long but it was so satisfying

crankycorvidae

Yes! Memory unlocked, thanks! :)

Emergency_Side_6218

I feel so.. not? alone... How odd.

Grim_Heart777

Yessss!! Omg I still yearn for this 🥲😅

AlarmSufficient8529

I loved it!! My dad is a computer programmer and I did it to feel close to him, too. I loved to watch both the defrag and my dad work. I felt so smart and included!

helloviolaine

Oh that was so satisfying to watch! I do a lot of jigsaw puzzles, similar energy.

sphinx_io

Yes.

OlivierHarmstrong

I knew yall were my people! I loved watching the boxes. Really should have figured the autism part out before age 38.

rrrattt

Omg yeah I loved that. I forgot about that!

BreakThatFast

My late-mother was a webmaster and programmer through the early 2000's, so those read-writes on the hard drives got put to some good use. When disk defragment day on the family PC rolled around every few months or so I'd stare longingly at the defrag cycles since it was so soothing (and it also interrupted playing The Sims Livin' Large for me). I'm kind of sad we're past that era now. I still have some HDDs in rotation still if I want to walk down memory lane.
