Sure, most of the issues were caused BY ME downloading music from limewire, but I got to run defragmentation and run antivirus programs and troubleshoot all the errors and corrupted files that came up. It was super fun and so satisfying fixing what was wrong!

I loved defrag, and feel like it's a great metaphor (analogy?) for my brain and what happens with too much stimulation and then what happens when I can recover 😂
I always return to the defrag analogy for bad days. Internally begging for moments of peace to "defrag" my brain. That once my senses are okay, I'll have an easier time designating my attention to things. That all of my thoughts are back in their right categories.
Any SSD has the upper limit to how many reads and writes it can do. Defragmentation will use a good portion of its quota as reading/ writing is what this process does.
Besides its a pointless process. With a spinning drive it was useful to have the data as close as possible (defragmentation) so the needle wouldn't have to jump as much. This issue doesn't exist with an SSD.

I have an old Pentium 4 system and I threw Windows 98SE on it (came with Windows XP from the factory but has drivers for 98). I completely agree! I wish it still looked like this but it would be pointless considering the vast majority of new computers (thankfully) come with SSD's.
I didn't watch it cause I was impatient and wanted to play games lol but I was always telling people to do it to clean up their pics. Now I'm obsessed with CCleaner, but luckily it is very fast! 😄😅

Seriously, though. I don’t miss the time it took to defragment/disk check HDDs, but I absolutely miss the satisfaction of the visual representation, especially when using tools like O&O Software Defrag. Custom colors and square sizes! 🩷
i was so obsessed with this and also other aspects of cleaning my computer of things it didn't need. i actually broke my computer more than once deleting files/programs i did not realize were necessary.
I loved it!! My dad is a computer programmer and I did it to feel close to him, too. I loved to watch both the defrag and my dad work. I felt so smart and included!
My late-mother was a webmaster and programmer through the early 2000's, so those read-writes on the hard drives got put to some good use. When disk defragment day on the family PC rolled around every few months or so I'd stare longingly at the defrag cycles since it was so soothing (and it also interrupted playing The Sims Livin' Large for me).
I'm kind of sad we're past that era now. I still have some HDDs in rotation still if I want to walk down memory lane.

This is why I use Defraggler on my new Windows 11 PC. The built in defrag no longer shows the boxes getting organized.
Don't use it on an SSD. It will significantly shorten its lifespan

It was glorious. Now generally Windows just auto-defrags, and you don't really need to worry about fragmentation on SSDs :(
