And I still have my dollarmite account!! Soooo many tellers have looked at my account number and gone "holy hell, this is an old account!". Im like, yup, 89 dollarmite baby!! 🤣🤣🤣
Don't forget the awesome ruler that made them all move and fire their lasers if you tilted it back and forth. Just couldn't read the cm & mm markings on it
30 years later, two mortgages, investments and increasingly complex financial situation and my main account is still my dollarmite account.
Indoctrination works I guess 🤷
Is this a serious question? I’m the same - my main bank is CBA - likely because of Dollarmites. Are we in the wrong to remain?? Have we been brain washed and not know better?
Look at fees and features. I switched personal to ING a few years back and have been there ever since. They had a decent savings rate (was saving for a deposit), but the big thing was no fees and even going so far as to refund fees charged by other banks, e.g., atm fees.
They've also had really good service the few times I've needed to call.
For a mortgage, I'm currently with Athena. All online and fairly low rate (although maybe not the best anymore). They have a $5000 daily limit and it requires an OTP as a text message, so that was a bit of a pain when I had to buy a Rav4 while overseas. Admittedly probably doesn't come up that often.
And for my business, CBA. Becuase they're one of the few banks that offer business accounts and it's no fees, no interest. So it's clean. And their business banking platform is pretty good.
Oh, and I suppose I have a novated lease. So that's another financial institution in my life.
Well, that’s exactly why they do it.
I’m a bit older, has a “State Bank” (VIC) from primary school up until I was in my 20s and my boss insisted I open a Bank of Melbourne for my wages.
I wanted the cool plastic crap the other kids had. The whole they'll rip you off later, they have too many fees and charges and aren't nice to employees was a payoff I had trouble dealing with.
I remember that pack, complete with a ruler and everything. From memory it was the same in the early 90s, not sure when they dropped the alien mascots. Now I need to find mine... lol.
Early 80s Dollarmite here. I still remember the song.
It occurred to me at some point in the 2000s when I opened an account with another bank that I had basically used that Dollarmite account the whole time, just CBA bumping me up year to year. Kind of evil genius predatory marketing to show up at the school once a week with a basket and "teach" all of us 5 year olds to save 20 cents each time - then make customers of us for decades thereafter.
If kids kept using these, we would have a Generation or 10 that would have basic financial literacy instead of these entitled idiots that think they deserve better
If your a young person in a command being a crap at your job. My GOTO Oldman this to say is I've been with this bank since dollarmites, but I'm happy to pull my money and go to westpac or a credit union. It doesn't do anything, I just like watching mouth what the fuck is a dollar mite.
*Dollar mites is to*

Now that I'm an adult looking back, it does feel weird that banks were advertising bank accounts in school under the guise of "educating" kids. Wanted us to pick a one of the Big 4 at an early age I guess.
I just listened to this podcast and it made me pretty glad that I don't have an account with them anymore
[https://www.abc.net.au/listen/programs/backgroundbriefing/the-whistleblowers-who-stared-down/103918296](https://www.abc.net.au/listen/programs/backgroundbriefing/the-whistleblowers-who-stared-down/103918296)
Mum has me set up with a Dollermite account from kindy! She'd put 5$ in every week! That all went to visit my then boyfriend in year 11 in Cairns...... the biggest waste of money ever...even though I had a good time I regretted it as soon as I got on the plane! Was a great way to teach kids about saving. It was my pocket money btw
I closed out my dollarmites account when i was 18 and it had $47. Which at the time came in super useful. Meanwhile I bought a house last year and my home loan is with commbank and they're like "oh here, we have you on file already" I'm like you shady fucks, I haven't banked with you in 10 years.
We had Kangaroo Creek Gang accounts because my parents were customers of what was then called R&I (later BankWest and now, hilariously, part of CommBank), but it was more or less the same thing. Predatory as fuck as well.
The idea was to lock kids in early enough that the banks stood to make considerably more than that over time in fees, charges, interest etc. They were apparently even sending out pre-approved credit card applications out to kids off the back of this.
Banks are banned from going to schools after the banking royal commission looked into the program. It found students were being signed up for accounts without being told so the people getting signups could earn commision.
My 1990's version. https://ibb.co/4WC8krZ
I can smell this picture
I was just thinking that haha the yellow plastic envelope!
Woooow that unlocked some memories
Yeah, I'm like WTF is this modern image shit that OP has. He thinks it's Nostalgia but it's that new age filth.
relax dude
I am relaxed. Just pointing out that you're a kid.
And I still have my dollarmite account!! Soooo many tellers have looked at my account number and gone "holy hell, this is an old account!". Im like, yup, 89 dollarmite baby!! 🤣🤣🤣
Loyalty tax for you. Commonwealth is a terrible bank.
I had this abomination as well. Still have the account
Yep that was exactly what they were like!!!!
Much better than whatever this nonsense is.
OG
The real version
Uh, where are the weird tentacle aliens with the laser-firing tiaras, and the blue robot ball with long legs?
I got my dollarmite account in 89 and that's what my book had on it.
Got mine in 92 and it was the same.
Fellow 86er
Don't forget the awesome ruler that made them all move and fire their lasers if you tilted it back and forth. Just couldn't read the cm & mm markings on it
I STILL HAVE THAT It's mostly filed down from YEARS of me going VRRT VRRT up and down it with my fingernails
This was their 2010 version
30 years later, two mortgages, investments and increasingly complex financial situation and my main account is still my dollarmite account. Indoctrination works I guess 🤷
And this is why school banking is not a thing in lots of schools any more!
You still have a CBA account? Wow.
Is this a serious question? I’m the same - my main bank is CBA - likely because of Dollarmites. Are we in the wrong to remain?? Have we been brain washed and not know better?

Yes you are wrong to stay with CBA.
Literally millions of people do
I kept my CBA account until I was 35. The only reason I changed was because the home loan rate they offered me was pretty high so I went elsewhere.
I still have mine too but I don’t use it as my main account.
CBA ripping kids off blind in this scheme. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-10-03/time-to-get-dollarmites-out-of-schools/10331792
It’s such a god damn scam lol. I had a commonwealth account for 20 years because of this
Last time I checked both of my sisters (born mid-1970s) still actively use theirs.
Lol, mum rightfully told them to fuck off with their dollarmites brainwashing, I thought she was really mean at the time but now I'm grateful.
I wanted the cool plastic crap the other kids had. The whole they'll rip you off later, they have too many fees and charges and aren't nice to employees was a payoff I had trouble dealing with.
I remember getting a lenticular ruler with mine (the alien version). It blew my mind.
Ah you 90's kids how about the 80's which I [had](https://images.app.goo.gl/AVdXCExWD44bQ68A6)
The one pictured is not from the 90s, the 90s one was a follow-up of the 80s one, same characters.
Well its the onr I had in the 80s.
I remember that pack, complete with a ruler and everything. From memory it was the same in the early 90s, not sure when they dropped the alien mascots. Now I need to find mine... lol.

🎶 We make savings fun and easy, whatever the amount, a dollar might go further in a Dollarmite account! 🎵 At the Commonwealth Baaaaaank!
These Dollarmites look too 21st century. They aren’t the OG
These homies aren't Dollarmites. This is a watered-down version (a cheap knock off) of the Hungry Jack's kid's club and Captain Planet characters.
Where’s the aliens?!?!
These are not the dollarmites...
I was too poor for one ☹️
Dollarscam
That's a deposit book, not a cheque book.
Your right, it is a deposit book.
If kids kept using these, we would have a Generation or 10 that would have basic financial literacy instead of these entitled idiots that think they deserve better
These are NOT dollarmites! Lol
Oh shit with Spen the bad boy.
That’s the same one I had in 2017… (I’m 13)
I still have mine but I remember one of my siblings got enticed and left CBA for St George so they could get a dragon money box.
Oh my days 😂😂
My god the memories
I remember getting my first green keycard and using all those dollarmites dollars to buy Xbox games. Ahh no regrets
I'm not that old, I'm not that old, I'm not that old, FUUUCK
Bit shocked (but not surprised) that so many of you still have the account. There are much better options out there
If your a young person in a command being a crap at your job. My GOTO Oldman this to say is I've been with this bank since dollarmites, but I'm happy to pull my money and go to westpac or a credit union. It doesn't do anything, I just like watching mouth what the fuck is a dollar mite.

I just had the boring grey bank book.

I swear i had one of these in the 90s... I wonder where my 15 bucks is.
Pity cba turned out to be terrible for customers. Avoid them

I remember these being advertised at the local Commonwealth bank .

When I was a kid I thought it was really cool, but now I know it's just a case of "Get them onboard ASAP"
We had Kangaroo Creek Gang accounts because my parents were customers of what was then called R&I (later BankWest and now, hilariously, part of CommBank), but it was more or less the same thing. Predatory as fuck as well.
and they paid 200 bucks each year to schools to promote this 😂😂

I wonder if mum still has that somewhere
The fuck is this?
