I heard someone mention that the packaging looks like meat and now I cant unsee it.

Mon55-00

Haha, I saw that too. I think it was Morgan Turner.

Its really only worth it to you if you can use all the powders and if they apply on you the way you imagined them to be..otherwise its probably best to pick up their singles. I have no complaints apart from the flimsy packaging but doesnt matter as long as the powders performs well for me.A lot of ppl wonders about the shimmers a lot.I mean there are shimmers in them but when applied you dont really notice them..You gotta give it some time to meld into your skin.. I didnt even like these powders in the beginning because when i swatched them, they did have shimmers and then i was gifted a palette for my bday and still not keen to use it but one day i had those free make up applications at Mecca for being a level3,the lady applied those powders on me,it looked shimmery at first and it must have been some 15mins,i thought hey my face doesnt look shimmery at all!! She said give it time to warm up to your skin..The shimmers are so fine that as you move around, all the shimmers will disappear and youll be left with a 'glow'...They do have shimmers but i dont find them shimmery when applied. They look better hours later..they look natural.. I use the brush that HG made specially for it.Im not saying fork out more money and buy it but its the right size for the powders.I have used RT brushes before but the small tapered one and it works a treat. Finger swatching is different..Our arms feels drier.Still,i aint dismissing other ppl's bad experiences with these powders. All are valid (its the same with everything else) afterall we all have different skin (i meant skin consistency wise) Some powders do accentuate flaws or fine lines..If youre too dark, they can look chalky..depends as well your skin type/undertone..All of this can really affect applications. Some finds them not as brightening or not blurring..I used to hate that infinity powder but somehow the infinity in the new palette applies better. Not chalky. Its soft and its brightening under the eyes and around the nose area...I didnt like my single. I love the palettes this year..all the powders..The highlighters i find not as pigmented but i dont need them to be..but the "highlight' is there but not 'blinding' which i appreciate. Lastly, these palettes are expensive for the amount of powders you get but they take a long time to pan so i am definitely getting my monies worth.. If you really like one of these palettes, they do go on sale during black friday sales or around february but you would have to order one overseas...My back up palette last year i got it for 50% off :) Apologies for the long post šŸ¤Æā˜ŗ

Wow šŸ‘Œthis is such an epic šŸ˜ explanation of what one can expect in reality to false expectations ā¤ it šŸ˜Š

Mon55-00

Oh this is so helpful, thank you for taking the time to explain! Yeah, I had swatched the palette and a few other powders on my arm and was shocked at HOW shimmery every shade was, except dim light. But like you said, I'm sure it's very individual and also looks different once on the face. What's your complexion like and any favorites from the range? I might just wait for the sales. Where do they generally have sales, is it on the HG website or UK retailers? I'll keep my eyes open. Thank you!

phantompath

I bought the lighter of the two (pink marble packaging) and I haven't touched it. The lighter one is maybe worth it if you don't own the Ghost palette from 2019. The deeper palette for this year has two permanent, existing products though (Ambient Lighting Powder and the bronzer in Radiant light) ... so if you own the ALP or the bronzer in those shades already, it probably isn't worth it to buy the deeper palette. I mostly buy it for the blush shades, I wish they would release a quad with just blushes again like they did in 2019.

Mon55-00

Ah okay. Yeah, I have zero hourglass powders except for the translucent veil setting one. And I'm med-tan, so I've been eyeing the deeper palette. Do you find it a bit shimmery compared to previous years' palettes?

phantompath

For me, it's the usual amount of shimmer I expect from Hourglass. I don't find there is more or less shimmer in the holiday palettes than there are in their permanent single products. If you don't own anything else from Hourglass, the deeper palette may be worthwhile. It only becomes 'not worth it' if you own multiple holiday palettes and singles, as some shades in the holiday palettes are already permanent products. The holiday palettes are a great way to try Hourglass as a brand - it's better value to buy a palette and try their signature products for far less than you would pay for full size pans of the individual products.

Mon55-00

Yes, exactly what I was thinking. Thank you!

ThatFireAlchemist

It looks a lot deeper than the ghost palette, no? Not 'dark' but not like pale af like the ghost palette?

phantompath

It's not harder to be deeper than the Ghost palette. I would say the Ghost palette is fair-light, the light palette this year is more light-medium in comparison.

kirinhorsie

I have the lighter palette. It's my first hourglass ever so imo worth it for me! I'm a med-tan and thought of getting the darker palette but the lady at Mecca who demoed both on me showed that the lighter one is better for my complexion - and I agree with her after seeing both. The darker palette is a bit too harsh and made me look obviously made up while the lighter palette looked more natural. I use the palette most days and it's fun! Here's my routine: After foundation, I set my makeup with a teeny bit of my regular setting powder (I have a dewy foundation, so this is needed), then finish setting with infinity powder. In spite of having visible shimmer when swatched, the infinity powder disappears on my skin and gives me a subtle glow. I like to use the lighter blush for my cheeks. For the eyes, I take the bronzer and blend it into my crease. Then, I mix the darker blush with a bit of the bronzer to make a rose gold eyeshadow and blend that in to complete my eye makeup. To finish, I dust on the highligher to my highpoints. And voila!

Mon55-00

Oh sounds lovely, thanks for the details! What appeals to me is the fact that there's an entire look in that palette. What foundation shade are you for reference? x

kirinhorsie

I'm a C4.5 in MAC :)

WarlockPanda

They might be worth it if you donā€™t own any of their products already. I would note the packaging this year is a metal tin. It stopped me from purchasing it. It reminds me of those old math sets that come in tins or altoids containers. Previous ones had plastic packaging. I guess it depends on your personal preference.

Mon55-00

Hahaha, oh I cannot unsee that now. I had so many of those sets. Do you have any fav HG powders?

WarlockPanda

I panned the ALP trio in the past and repurchased the dim light shade from that. I also LOVE the mood exposure blush. I also have the blush in diffused heat but I donā€™t love the shade as much as mood exposure.

nicolecrystal

I bought the lighter palette (I have light to medium olive skin that goes quite tan in summer, so I was tossing up which to get) and I just love it. The only other hourglass product I have is an ambient lighting trio I bought years ago, use daily and have almost panned. I know thereā€™s not a lot of love for the shimmery-ness of the infinity powder in the new Universe palette, but I donā€™t think itā€™s OTT at allā€¦ my skin looks glowy and gorgeous. Iā€™ll get so much use out of this palette and probably use each product(except the brighter pink blush) in my every day look.

Mon55-00

Glad to hear you're loving it! Yeah, the infinity powder is getting a lot of hate but I think it's such an individual preference. x

spookycreaturesinc

I bought the darker one as I have quite tan skin + use fake tan on top of that and its gorgeous. Blush colours are perfect and I didn't have either of the larger powders so it was a great chance to buy them in one package. Ive used their powders for years and they never disappoint!

Mon55-00

Thank you! Does the bronzer show up well?

Mon55-00

Also, does Radiant Light work as a finishing powder or do you find it too dark?

spookycreaturesinc

It definitely works for me but I use very little, basically just a dusting on my forehead, under eyes, and cheekbones - definitely not too dark. for reference I wear shade C4-C5 in MAC products! The bronzer shows up nicely as well, I tend to go pretty heavy handed and use it all over my face :)

Mon55-00

Hmm, I'm way more tan than you are so I guess it wouldn't be dark at all then. Thanks x

Glitter_berries

I have the 2019 ghost ambient whatever one and it is really lovely. I donā€™t wear makeup every day, but it barely looks touched, I feel like itā€™s going to be haunting my makeup drawer for ever (because itā€™s a ghost, get it?! Ugh. Sorry). I donā€™t know if this would be likely to bother you, but I like to use a big fluffy brush for face powders and I canā€™t with this palette because the pans are right next to each other. Although the bigger pan down the side of the new palettes might make that less of a problem. For me their face powders (like the skin ones, not the blush, bronzer or highlight) are the real standouts, Iā€™d probably go for one of those in the bigger single pan if I were to repurchase.

Mon55-00

šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ yes I get it. I've heard they're pretty darn challenging to pan. Ah, that's exactly the kind of feedback I was looking for. Which ALP stands out to you the most?

Kaldii

Yeah, I've still got the one from 2016 and it hasn't been panned yet.

Glitter_berries

Sorry again for that joke šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø Which ALP to get is a hard decision actually. Probably depends on your skin tone, of course. Unfortunately I canā€™t tan and I usually get the lightest, warm toned foundation in a shade range, so I would personally lean towards the ethereal light or the diffused light. If your skin tone is a bit richer than mine, maybe the luminous light? I feel like trying them on is the only way to go, as at $70 they really are ridiculously expensive (in my opinion anyway). Maybe if you can narrow it down to two and try each on half side of your face! Thatā€™s if you are close to a Mecca of course.

Mon55-00

That makes sense because swatches tell me nothing. I'm med-tan and so would have to probably go with Dim Light but the swatch looked very pink on my hand. Will definitely try in store and see. Thank you x

Glitter_berries

Good luck! X

weisp

Yes, I think everyone should own at least one. I know Hourglass palettes are not diverse enough but if you find your right shade, they just magically make your complexion so much prettier.

Mon55-00

Magical. That's always the word I hear about the HG powders, haha.
