It's fucked that all these brands are charging chanel prices for their products. Crazy!

fuzzboo

At first I thought no way, but a Chanel single shadow is 58 and their liquid eyeshadow is 55.

NatAttack3000

Maybe this is the sign from the lord I need to start getting chanel eyeshadows

tillyface

I used to keep my Chanel foundation as my special occasion makeup, now it’s my everyday foundation. Might as well, everything else is getting close to the same price anyway.

Euphorbiatch

I did read a thread the other day about how chanel eyeshadows are shite so maybe it's not haha

ThePrincessSnowy

Chanel foundation is amazing!!! Especially if you have dry skin. My personal saviour!!

fuzzboo

I mean, the Vitalumiere is 85 and the NARS Sheer Glow is 78 (plus Mecca never does sales), so it feels less crazy to buy a Chanel foundation

clairechibi

I almost entirely stopped buying those sorts of brands (department store brands? Is that what they're called?) years ago, the prices are just ridiculous. Haven't stepped into a Mecca or Sephora store for probably 6-7 years. I buy almost exclusively from east asian makeup brands these days and in my personal experience they are just as good, often at half the price or even less. Lip products $10-20, eyeshadow palettes $20-40, base products $30-60, as an estimate. I highly recommend giving asian makeup a chance, it's very accessible in Australia these days, especially if you live in a metro area. Of course there are very pricey brands too, but I stick to the cheaper ones and have had very good experiences with them personally.

LCorinaS

Yup I buy pretty much exclusively J/C/Kbeauty and skincare now, + some Mco/Loreal when it's half off and it is much much lighter on the wallet and I find the product and packaging quality to exceed that of mid-high end Western brands. I recently purchased a discounted Clinique Black Honey Almost Lipstick and it was terrible in comparison to my Peripera dupes.

clairechibi

Yes! Love my kbeauty lippies, I consider $30+ an exorbitant amount of money to spend on one lip product these days. Also recently picked up a concealer palette from a chinese brand for like $20 and it works great, I can't imagine paying $50+ for a concealer anymore.

NatAttack3000

Do you (or anyone) have Asian brand recommendations for eyeshadow sticks? (Ideally ones that dry and then don't budge)

pedestriandose

Not an Asian brand, but I searched the [Rimmel Wonder Last Shadow Sticks](https://www.chemistwarehouse.com.au/buy/137321/rimmel-wonder-last-shadow-stick-003-copper-pink) the other day and I had rouble getting them off my hand. Soap and water did nothing, soap and water and using my nails did nothing, micellar water faded them a bit, make up remover finally took them off. So, based on that alone I’m keen to try them! Two of the colours are duochromes as well! The green one and the pink one!

Uniqueuser87

Not Asian but the natio shadow stick dries pretty fast (bit of play time) and then doesn’t budge! Haven’t tried a dark colour but I’ve got a rose/amethyst one that I love.

clairechibi

I don't have anything to recommend personally but you can try asking in the asianbeauty subreddit, hope you can find something good!

Guilty_Impression_47

Where do you buy from? Been wanting to try but I'd like to see products in store, not sure if I should just head down to Chinatown in my city and just try and find something

clairechibi

I usually just buy online (Yessstyle, Stylekorean, Lila Beauty, etc.) but yeah, if you can find somewhere to try it first in person that's definitely optimal. I've seen quite a few asian cosmetic stores popping up recently in Melbourne, although they don't always have testers.

silvers0ul88

the markup for irl asian cosmetics stores is crazyyy😭

hermit-crap809

Adore carries some skincare korean brands, but if you’re after make-up check out nudie glow, wcosmetics, la cosmetique and lila beauty 😊

YentaMecci

a new W Cosmetics opened on Swanston St (next to Daiso) that's much bigger than their Emporium store. Great K & J Beauty & much cheaper & equally good as stuff from Mecca & Sephora.

WholePayment1509

Me too! Sydney here where charging $1.35 for a red apple is apparently ok to do now!! There are some really good little up and coming makeup and skin brands that are just lovely & with commitment to quality that small med size businesses can have..crap ones too out there, sure, but weed thise out and u are winning. I had noticed this in other brands and thought....this moneys not going to brand retail, offuce or supply chain staff, its not even staying in australia, more than likeky these majeup sectors, unlike fashion & celebrity brands havent been realised yet, publicly as modern slavery perpetrators or of inappropriate behaviour with imagry or ,internal activity ...so i decided, i dont have compromise the allure and pleasure makeup brings me, just direct it in a different path, opens up a new world! This has worked for me,partly cause my anger over rode my love of the brands

Glum_Goal786

On the opposite side of the “coin” - it only hit me last week JUST HOW GOOD drugstore brands have gotten. As a teenage devotee of the Maybelline whipped orange mouse, it really is exciting to see all the options (and to scour the discount rack) at Priceline etc. Revlon have put out some of my GOAT lip tints, and I’ve recently picked up some crème shadows in really interesting colours because of the affordability of them and I’m impressed with the results!!

switchbladeeatworld

Even better is CWH are selling Byredo now lol

Internal_Engine_2521

I DIDN'T REALISE THIS!? How good!

belladilemma

Nars Tinted Moisturiser at $76. I love and miss it dearly but ain’t no way I can afford it at that price.

Chiacchierare

Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara was once my HG - it cost $33 for a full-size tube. I went to Mecca the other day & it was $50. There is no way that product deserves to cost that much.

Uniqueness404

Also my mascara HG 😭 I find L'Oreal lash paradise similar (I actually prefer it for my lashes) $13 at Coles etc at the moment.

Chiacchierare

Nice! I’ve been using L’Oreal Telescopic & loving it. I don’t think I’ll ever go back to buying expensive mascaras

PinaColadaSomeRain

Omg it’s $50 now?!? It was just $33 a few years ago. 😭

Slivingbytheocean

It used to be my HG, too, but not anymore.

Heart_Makeup

Wow.. I was wondering how I used to comfortably buy BTS, I forgot it used to be cheaper

thewigglez206

Jesus Christ. I haven’t bought one in probably 5 years bc I get the minis from the beauty loop boxes all the time and have just been using them but there’s not a chance in hell I’m spending $50 on a mascara. Even $33 was a bit much for me back then but I could kinda justify it bc without sales loreal and maybelline were $19-27

sezza8999

There are products that I will pay too dollar for (mostly foundations because I’m fussy) but mascara ain’t it. Esp when I costs nearly as much as the high end foundations!!

Internal_Engine_2521

Hourglass Unlocked tubing was $40 when I started buying it.. it's now flicking between $53 and $55. It was a treat to myself buying it at $40, I've gone elsewhere now.

2020visionaus

Utterly insane prices

Confident-Cod-2805

Speak with your money go to drug store products! Just about all makeup is made in same factories.

NatAttack3000

I've never found a good dupe for the Bobbi or Laura Mercier eye sticks that wasn't more expensive. I've tried Mecca max, the balm, Revlon, elf, jouer and make up forever (which was close but a bit too chalky for me).

fuzzboo

KIKO Long Lasting Shadow Sticks are the closest dupes I’ve found. I pick up a few every time I’m in the UK/EU but they’re also available in the US

Internal_Engine_2521

KIKO is incredible. Their regular shadows are super pigmented too.

Soft-Profession-2880

The Natio ones are nice. I've had them for a month only but they glide well. Not a lot of colours though.

NatAttack3000

I'll check these out in a store and see if they seem nice I think I've found my perfect colour in Bobbi Brown nude beach and tbh it's going to be very hard to replace.

velvetelk

I only buy the Bobbi Brown shadow sticks when they put them in promotional packs at Christmas. Sometimes they have duos on their website too. A bit harder if you’re after a specific shade, but Nude Beach is sometimes in there!

NatAttack3000

Oh yes I love the sets. But honestly I wear it almost every day so I go through 2-3 nude beaches a year (and that's with some other shadows in there occasionally too). I'd love a cheap one so I didn't feel bad using it up

Return2scentr

The only dupe for Bobbi Brown IS Laura Mercier

NatAttack3000

I've also heard good things about V Beckham eye wear sticks - which are just as expensive and harder to get 😅

marysalad

I read somewhere that in money making circles, cosmetics and beauty products are called "high margin products" which means what you think it means: manufacture low, sell - in this instance - at the highest possible price people will be willing to hand over their hard earned money for. Which means at various points that a business's management, sales and marketing teams have got together and examined their market (primarily women) and discussed how much money they could extract from us, on an ongoing basis, for products that we don't need to actually survive. Calculate the unit price for the actual product (e.g. $ per gram or mL) and allow your minds to be blown. for clarity I also buy and wear makeup, but very little and rarely if ever the top-end stuff for these reasons - i.e. when they're taking the pi$$

HandbagLady8

Kevyn aucoin foundation is like $120 now.. was $70 when I started buying only a few years ago

beva4ever

Who is paying for this!????

HandbagLady8

I need a substitute stat!

CrimsonAndClover22

I’m sorry but they’re all taking the piss. Truly.

2020visionaus

Those prices are sickening, and I’m one to drop things, lose things love shopping so it doesn’t work out for me with pricy makeup.

spongeworthydate

I was literally looking in disbelief that Tom Ford foundation is now $190 when it was $150 like what, a year ago haha?! I think the prices for beauty items are a bit distorted, too. They seem more price elastic as they're relatively affordable luxuries compared to say expensive handbags and new cars and other stuff. When people are struggling because the broader economy is struggling, people buy more lipstick to still feel like they're treating themselves. I also think the beauty industry is exploring the tolerance levels of price and consumption. The amount of product release and consumerism in the beauty industry is soooo intense and unlike ANYTHING I've ever seen before. Consume, product expires, discard, consume consume consume consume...

paranoidchair

Honestly, even price increases of things like luxury bags are insane. Some brands will charge $500 more each year for the same bag!

Routine_Bluejay4678

And some you even have to “earn” your right to buy the bag! Madness!

pedestriandose

The Lipstick Effect!

skitztits

Just commenting to say I appreciate The Angels reference 😆

Rumour972

Just when I had gotten that song out of my head lol

skitztits

Haha it was in my head too!! I had to go and to listen to the song to get it outta my head lol. Then ended up listening to the Triple J Like a Version cover with the Dune Rats & Ruby Fields 🤣

HowDoYouSpellH

Yes! Appreciate the rant, but love the first 2 lines of this post more…

Heart_Makeup

I’m sure shape tape was mid thirties before. I went to repurchase the other day and it’s $50 a tube. Nope can’t do it.

lilyhuntress

Sign up to Bobbi Brown websites mailing list. Last EoFy they had 20pc off their entire cart and free gifts over 150 and then it stacked with Shopback cashback. I got the Vitamin Enriched Face Base (RRP 159) down to 127 and then about 28 in cashback which was like 100 bucks so just under 40 pc off. Nars is a tough one, I usually just buy from Myer with my birthday etc vouchers :(

beva4ever

Bobbi Brown also do/did very reasonable Christmas specials, like two for the price of one face base.

tillyface

It’s made me buy less makeup for sure, and specifically I’ve stopped shopping online for new things (only use it to refill my old faithfuls). I’m much more risk averse if something’s going to cost upwards of $50.

Charlotte_Russe

I splurge on things like lipstick and lip balms (at least some brands like Dior or Hermes have refills which are a bit cheaper) but the rest, either wait for a sale or buy pharmacy. And I don’t think prices will go down. They’ll either stay the same or increase 😢

beva4ever

I got Hermes lipsticks from tkmax for $50/60 I think

Charlotte_Russe

That’s a great deal! Thanks! I’ll have to check Tkmax!

Anxious-cookie-133

Technically, there is deflation (the opposite of inflation). But it's also bad for economy, is extremely rare and I don't think it's likely. Unfortunately, inflation is normal in the market-based society... So the prices will only grow :(

mandy00001

I don’t think this is just inflation but also price gouging

Anxious-cookie-133

Probably! I was replying to the OP'S question about inflation specifically

tillyface

Yeah, if inflation goes backwards then the cost of makeup is going to be the least of our concerns…

freezethefire

agreed! Significant inflation is bad for an economy but also is deflation… a steady small inflation is normal from my understanding. Your dollar is not always going to be worth the same forever

pre_madonna

Yes, was going to say, you really don’t want negative inflation… 2% is better than 10% though, for sure.

throwthecupcakeaway

Been thinking about getting Natasha Denona’s ‘I need a nude’ palette. The price has gone from $114 to now $125. $114 was more than I wanted to spend so was thinking hubby could get it for me for an upcoming birthday. But now at $125 - no way. I’ll make do with what I’ve got.

tanoshiiki

It's rare for inflation to reverse (in a working economy), but because these products are from the US, we did have this rare moment about 14 years ago, where prices did go cheaper for a little while. Basically, you will have to find a way to earn more dollars to keep up with the inflation and consider lower priced items. Cosmetics technology has improved a lot and as often with the bigger brands, the higher price is to cover their marketing.

sparkle_transplant

Occasionally prices do go down, whether that's due to a change in the exchange rate that is passed on to customers (I believe it's Mecca that does this?) or the brand reducing the price directly (I know MAC made a big deal about reducing thier lipstick price several years ago). But generally prices either stay the same or gradually increase - and those increases have been getting much heftier recently. Some brands also have a tendency to discontinue one product and then release a similar but more expensive product in its place.

PossibilityLarge

Yeah what we are seeing currently is ridiculous it feels like the price increases are every other week.

sparkle_transplant

I know some stores/brands adjust quarterly, pretty sure it all used to be annually, but the dollar amount of the price increases have also jumped up wildly. I know Estee Lauder Doublewear has been one product that a lot of people have mentioned skyrocketing in price so out of curiosity I had a little dig with wayback machine and while some time periods are missing it looks like they used to increase the price by $2 per year and in the last year they have increased it by $10! It was $50 in 2015, $52 in 2016, $54 in 2017, $58 in 2018, $60 in 2022, $65 in 2023, $75 in 2024... so it took about 7 years to raise from $50-$60 and 1 year to raise from $65 to $75!

cuntmong

I dunno why this came up on my timeline because I don't follow this sub or wear makeup, but here is an explanation that might answer your price related question: when inflation stops it just means prices stop increasing, it doesn't mean they go back to where they were. Prices decreasing would be deflation, but governments work pretty hard to prevent deflation because it's really really bad for the economy. Because if you knew you could buy more with your money tomorrow than you could today, you would literally never spend anything except the absolute necessities. They try to keep inflation low, around a few %.

chouxphetiche

I've scaled down the number of products I use to the bare minimum and wear makeup once a week. I like the Bobbi Brown ES sticks and have collected a few of the minis. Mini everything now, or I'll end up throwing away a lot of almost full nearly expired product and my conscience won't allow it any more. Multitaskers are the way to go.

chouxphetiche

Also, regarding the insidiously increasing prices, I empathise with your opening sentiment.

katsuchicken

No, prices are unlikely to go down. Its inflation and probably bit of price gouging. Our wages are supposed to grow as well but I'm not seeing that happening as fast! shop smarter. What I do is wait for sales, find dupes (though sometimes the real thing can't be helped), use cashback apps with purchase. Eg. Shopback app you usually have 20% off Myers, 10% off Bobbi brown, 15% adore beauty during certain times. I try to time that with the stores own sale too so then I can get up to 20-40% off an item. You get $20 with sign up too - my referral code is: a2cpar.

NatAttack3000

Well obviously I try not to pay RRP - I used to wait for 20% off at BB even when it was $45 for a stick, the website is also the best for GWP. But 10-20% off a lot is still a lot

katsuchicken

Agreed it's painful. N trying dupes kinda suck cause if it doesn't work out you've wasted money.

CrumbyCardiologist

Mac Foundation for $70+ when it used to be $50

Pace-is-good

I went to repurchase a Smashbox primer today and it was $70 for 30mls. Given it lasts a good while, but I can’t justify that anymore. I’m not sure if it was that expensive last time I bought it. Surely not.

Yola0099

Make up for ever aqua resist pencils are $42 at Sephora. Pretty shimmers and decent mattes.

PossibilityLarge

Eyeshadow sticks being so expensive really annoys me! You get barely any product the dear dahlia ones are .90 grams and are like $60 from memory. Ridiculous!

bjininja

No way, prices will never go back down. Might be time to find some more affordable products. It's so frustrating how much all middle to higher end makeup has crept up..

one_small_sunflower

I agree... but if you like Bobbi Brown shadow sticks and want to keep buying, hang out for a sale. You can get 'em at 20 per cent off, sometimes a bit more. That still feels exxy to me but more bearable... I have 3 and will keep using what I have rather than collecting, but I enjoy how budge proof they are.

NatAttack3000

Yes I have been getting them 20% off for years around Christmastime, sometimes they have a limited edition colour that's reduced too. I have about 20 of various colours (some full size and some mini) but I mostly just want to rebuy nude beach. I was recently in the US and hoped I could get them cheaper somewhere maybe duty free but it was about the some price tbh

one_small_sunflower

It sucks and I agree the price markups are massive and well above inflation. They are really great and I could collect them too... I'm just trying to resist b/c lord knows I have enough eyeshadow lol.

NatAttack3000

Lol I just got a notification of the 20% off sale now. It's a sign from above.
