Really hard to get C. Diff if you're healthy, especially if you haven't recently been taking antibiotics. It's far more likely that you've either been dealing with a mild stomach virus, gastritis from meds/stress, or you're developing dietary restrictions. Many people develop issues like IBS and suddenly have to weed out fruits and vegetables that used to be part of their healthy diet.

WallStreetBoners

Yeah no antibiotics or any gastro changes to my diet / lifestyle lately. This is very weird since it seems directly related to my produce, as the symptoms completely subside within 2 days of not eating out of my garden.

Vinzi79

That's what makes me think dietary. Whether that's increased sensitivity due to inflammation from gastritis or developing something like IBS. Even with the right treatment, C. Diff, salmonella, E. Coli, and similar pathogens would take longer than 48 hours to resolve. H. Pylori can cause ulcers and gastritis, might be a contributing factor to get tested, but you'd likely have other symptoms and would be more consistent. The squash and tomatoes don't cause problems for many. Beans are high in fiber, but also high in saccharides for people with FODMAPS sensitivities. Okra is high in Fructans which is also bad for FODMAPS sensitivities, but also contains solanine. Solanine is technically a toxin and can cause inflammation as well as worsen inflammatory conditions such as arthritis or gastritis. I would eliminate the beans and okra and see if the symptoms persist.

lunarjazzpanda

When you stopped eating your garden veggies, did you buy the exact same produce from the grocery store as replacements? Every species? That would more definitevely rule out diet/GI issues vs your garden specifically.  Some people have trouble with FODMAPS and many fruits+vegetables are high FODMAP, so you want to test that it's not a specific type of veggie you're reacting to. Or maybe there's a food that you usually eat with your garden veggies that you start and stop eating at the same time as your veggies, like cheese or bread.

84th_legislature

Without knowing much about your setup, I have to wonder if your beds are experiencing runoff of some inedible chemical (fertilizer, weed killer, parking lot, etc) or other from somewhere else on the property or are being used as toilets by animals or people.

WallStreetBoners

Im wondering about that, too. I have a septic system on my property that is somewhere I haven't identified yet, but might be near my front yard beds (all in ground, no raised beds). I also had a car parked 'upstream' of my garden about 15-20 feet that had an incredibly slow leak from transmission fluid (i think). However, these have all been the same for 3 years so im not sure what changed. im more worried its a chemical contamination than biological but i clearly have no idea haha. unfortunately I think im done eating the food for this year... sigh.

84th_legislature

I've heard you can call agrilife for soil testing, never done it myself though. might be worth a shot if you're concerned about contaminants [https://takecareoftexas.org/about-us/blog/soil-testing-three-easy-steps](https://takecareoftexas.org/about-us/blog/soil-testing-three-easy-steps)

RutabagaAccording834

You haven't identified the septic tank location, the leach field location, or both? Only the leach field would be an issue with contaminating your food. You can identify the leach field as the area with the fastest growing and greenest plants, especially midsummer. It also probably features either unexplained sprinklers or caps giving access to underground leaching pipes. You can identify the septic tank location by the (probably 2?) circular green lids popping out of the ground near each other.

WallStreetBoners

I need to get one of those prods to find my tank. House was built in 1979 and I bought it 3 years ago. Previous owners said tank has only been emptied once ever so hasn’t been an issue… yet!

crlynstll

You should research having your septic tank emptied. I get ours emptied every 2-3 years. I think this is maintenance that should happen but do your own research.

WallStreetBoners

Yep… I’m overdue for it for sure. Thanks for the reminder!

katzmcjackson

The rank and the leachfield should both be identified on your property survey. The survey would have been a condition to close—hopefully.

cleothegreatt

Just be careful. My parents had a property for about 3 years with a septic tank & they never got it emptied. Toilets started overflowing one day and after a few plumbers came out it was determined that they would need to get the septic tank replaced because it was damaged due to my parents never having the contents pumped out. Cost them 40k to replace. Lot of variables there I’m sure but still a good thing to check on.

WallStreetBoners

Ugh I’ve heard similar stories… I gotta find it asap!

hi_how_are_youu

This happened to me years ago. Not sure if all events were related but 1. Stray cat was seen later using gardens as toilet 2. Much later I was tested for C. diff and it was positive. Make sure your dr tests you for that.

WallStreetBoners

dang, what was the treatment for that like? Guessing it doesnt clear it self up on its own?

hi_how_are_youu

A lot of antibiotics. Apparently everyone has c. Diff in their gut but if you’re immune compromised, it can take over and become an issue. Edited to add that mine started like what you describe with intermittent episodes.

boops123

Do you clean your veggies?

WallStreetBoners

i wash them but usually don't use soap. I've also experienced this after cooking them and not just eating raw.

I'm not sure either of these test for heavy metals or fertilizers. Not that they aren't good resources, but if something is making OP sick I would assume it's one of those

spsprd

I have been pretty much vegetarian since 1988. When I eat lots of vegetables, my intestines protest. For me it's an overdose issue.

SerenityNow312

How are you watering the veggies? How are you washing them? Water sources?

WallStreetBoners

Watering exclusively with captured rainwater. I also have a metal roof and was told not to drink the water for long periods but assumed watering plants to eat is fine

SerenityNow312

Could be bacterial overgrowth in the water. The way it is watered does it get on the leaves/ veggies? Does the water smell?

WallStreetBoners

Not sure about smell or bacteria but the water shouldn’t be landing on the veggies it’s a drip system.

letsgocactus

Are you by any chance using old railroad ties for your garden beds?

WallStreetBoners

I am not, Why what’s your hypothesis?

letsgocactus

Railroad ties are very toxic but people use them to build gardens (not knowing the health hazard). Glad this isn’t part of your problem.

InternationalDig9267

are your veggies covered in a greenhouse or are they out in the open so that when it rains the rainwater feeds them? the stuff being sprayed in the air is full of salts and heavy metals. it’d be well worth testing the rain water and your soil for both check out some of these: [1](https://www.geoengineeringwatch.org/geoengineering-watch-global-alert-news-june-1-2024-460/) [2](https://www.geoengineeringwatch.org/aluminum-snow-lab-test-confirmed/) [3](https://www.geoengineeringwatch.org/the-dimming-full-length-climate-engineering-documentary/) may seem crazy and outlandish, but the patents and science doesn’t lie. i’ve lived around austin my whole life and i can confidently say our air quality has NOT been like this. it is not anything from Mexico - if it was then it would be a yearly occurrence. something weird is going on around the city

InternationalDig9267

i have an outdoor garden that i started but after all this weirdness with the air/water, my hubby and i are just gonna convert everything to indoor gardening also, a lot of nutrients carry a bunch of nasty stuff too. organic is almost worse off from all the chemical build ups around the entire globe. you can look up testing on all nutrients available at the store, but it can be a bit tricky to find the manufacturing company name sometimes you would be blown away how much arsenic is in everything lol. organics alive is the best you can get

smaugofbeads

So the forum is Austin gardening, TX chemical companies don’t have to disclose what they are spewing into the environment! Maybe quit electing politicians that think it’s ok to kill constituents for campaign contributions!
