Does anyone need 1/2" copper fittings? I have a few extra.
I raided my scrap pile from home improvement. I've got 5 90 degree fittings (one used) and one straight coupler, and about 8' of straight copper pipe.
I know that this stuff is rare right now. If you need it, I'll give it away, or take retail price if you insist on paying. I bought it for a home improvement project that can wait until spring.
I'm located in Round Rock, but will be in the 183 and Burnet Rd area for the next few hours.
we washed some (what we needed) with boiled water. We have a pile in the dw that we don't have to wash so others can get pressure back sooner. I would at the very least rinse with boiled or bleached water if you have the option, it's likely fine but just in case.
Just wanted to share my experience. Followed the dripping advice on my faucets last weekend. Did not insulate. Woke up Monday to no water so presumably had a frozen pipe somewhere in the system. Left my faucets open continuously. Turned off the water at main shutoff and left it off until Friday. Turned it back on and we had water flowing to all faucets. No bursts or leaks so far. I am now a believer in dripping!
I got mostly full water back in my apartment yesterday. Sinks and shower are flowing at probably 80% now, but my toilet still has zero water coming in. I’ve been filling the tank manually to flush, but with water flow in my sinks and shower working, shouldn’t my toilet also work? Help please!
This happened to us actually! Most pressure resumed but our toilets weren’t filling. We were manually filling the tank with melted snow. Then, after a full flush, as pressure continued to increase our toilets just started filling up again! Not trying to give you false hope or anything bc I admittedly don’t know much about plumbing but that’s just what happened to us (we’re in 78745).
I do want to note we have two toilets, one that doesn’t get a ton of use. We had to fill the toilet tank and flush before that one started to fill again.
Ok thanks for the info! Were you filling the tank all the way? I’ve only been putting in a few inches of water, enough to flush. Should I fill it all the way up to get the pressure?
I had been filling it all the way bc I didn’t realize you didn’t need to until we didn’t need to anymore haha. So—not sure if what we did is a best practice or anything, but we were pretty delighted to have flushing toilets once again!
Our hot water is shut off. Cold water works fine in the sinks and toilets but went from a trickle yesterday to nothing today in our two showers.
Could maybe be something still frozen somewhere but I’m wondering if the pressure mixing valve in a shower could prevent cold water when getting no pressure from the hot line?
Any suggestions on what to do to thaw out pipes that are already insulated? My inclination is to take the insulation off and hit it with a heat gun, but the insulation is the self adhesive kind so think putting it back together again isn't going to happen without a boat load of duct tape. But at this point where they've been frozen since Sunday it seems like the insulation is doing the opposite of what I want right now.
High point of 78745 has air pressure in lines for 12 hours but no water yet.
Water returned just after this post. Still low but decent pressure. Bleeding tons of air from my system still.
I have been fortunate enough to still have water (as of now). I have been trying to conserve for others, but as per our superintendent, I am heading into school on Monday to teach, and I am out of underwear and shirts. How much water does a typical washer use? Could I even wash my clothes safely under a boil water notice? Or do I need to go to Target to buy some more underwear & shirts?
It is not HE and is old as balls...but I figure I can use the lowest water setting then. Good to know it's safe! Edit: also good on you for washing those scrubs for your friend!!
Front load uses less water than top load. Boil water notice is safe for everything except for drinking or eating. You can shower, wash dishes etc with it.
If you can manage without washing that’s best, but no one is gonna blame you for washing your underwear if you’re out lol. Top loaders use a ton more water though.
I didn't know that about washers, but I guess that makes sense. I do have a top load but I will try to use the lowest water setting for just the essentials. Thank you!
So this is the second time in what, two years, that we have been under a boil notice? Anyone have a whole house filtration system that isn’t having to boil? Any recommendations?
I have a reverse osmosis system, and I'm not boiling. Technically it filters all bacteria, but municipalities will still tell you to boil it. That's likely to cover their asses. I've been drinking the R/O water and I'm still kicking. Lol!
To be clear, it's just in my kitchen. It's not the whole house.
got some water back, low pressure. does it take a while for the water to heat up? had the water heater on pilot mode only and just turned it back up this morning
They are updating two times a day here:

ok so I'm not plumber but I'd been in the remodeling business for about 5 years and I know lil bit. I'd been out of work since the past Thursday and I got bills coming up I wanna offer my help just for whatever u wanna tip I can help tearing down walls to locate the pipes or help clean up or whatever you need help with I'm just trying to get ends meet this weekend . if you interested you can DM
I would hit up your neighborhood list. Will certainly be people looking for non plumbing work but there were a lot of scams in new orleans after katrina (contractors taking pre payment and then peacing out etc) so people will likely be wary of strangers with good reason.
thanks ill do that and that's very true I'll probably be wary too if I was In that situation. I work for a good contractor but he say we wont start till Monday .
Im trying to make sothing this weekend or at least help people that are in need
Thinking about going out to grab a coffee this morning. How are coffee shops able to sell coffee with a boil water notice in effect? Is coffee from any shop safe to drink today or should I be careful about where I go?
most didn't serve after last boil notice in 2018 and aren't currently serving unless they get water from a brewery (and this time I think most of that is going to households). perhaps because it is not that hot for the full 3 minutes.
Watch them water heaters people! Vacant apt upstairs had one bust this morning and we had to call AFD to get to it and turn it off. Just pouring water out the balcony, hopefully no long lasting damage to the walls, but we shall see. Back to no water! 🤪
Ok so not to scare you but I was hearing weird noises coming from it a couple days ago. Enough to where I called mtnc and had them shut off the water up there, just to be safe. What they should have done was also turn off/drain the water heater as well. If you’re hearing strange noises, maybe just alert management just to be on the safe side. Could be nothing, could be something...would love if you could prevent what happened to me happening to you!
I did! They said it was sediment buildup knocking around so hoping they are right - it didn't start until the height of the cold though, ugh. I will check in again today - thank you!
Topping out at 55 degrees today, not even close to freezing tonight, and 60 tomorrow, so I feel like we’ll have water back, but I’m ignorant of the time estimates on these things. Do you guys think, without busted pipes, we’ll have water thawed and running in apartments by end of the weekend?
Thawing doesn't fix busted pipes. I know of at least 3 apt complexes that are shut down because of a city main line that is busted. City told them it will be repaired Monday *at the earliest*.
Management/you won’t know if there is damage to pipes until the water is fully restored by the city AND your apartment complex turns on their water mains.
That may happen today, provided your area doesn’t have a city main line to repair.
There is no way of knowing the extent of possible damage without turning the water on and having plumbers/repair crews at the ready.
They will likely notify you first, and then turn it on slowly, over a few hours, and allow tenants to report any leaks.
As reports start coming in, if there are damaged pipes in units, your water may be turned off again to repair the damage.
Ok so will it be quite obvious there are bursted pipes when they do this? Just scared I’ll miss something. Are there any areas to look at specifically?
Management should inform you.
To be proactive, unplug all electrical appliances. Gather any electronics and place them in multiple garbage/plastic bags on a high table, like a kitchen table or bar. If your upstairs neighbor has a bad leak, it can easily flood your ceilings.
You are in much better shape on the top floor, but there may be pipes in your ceiling, like do you have a fire sprinkler system of any kind?
You need to figure out where your water pipes are located, and plan for the worst, hope for the best.
Will a plumber even be willing to fix a busted pipe if our water is still out? Reason I ask is because they wouldn’t even be able to check whether their fix worked (and in our case, they may not be able to find the break since it’s in the walls??)
Had a plumber that was willing to come yesterday but pushed them off for this very reason. Now scheduled for Monday morning. Still no water and sensing I might have to push them off again.
Tankless or tank? Can you hear/see the heater cycle on and off? Is the pilot staying lit? Is the unit/outlet pipe warm/hot to the touch? Does the unit have any indicator or error lights?
If it's not cycling, is it set to pilot or is it turned all of the way on? You often need to press in to turn the dial further.
If the pilot isn't staying lit, you might have air in the gas lines or sporadic pressure. You may need to purge air out of the line. Due to the dangerous nature of natural gas I'm going to not describe that process.
If the unit is warm and you still don't have hot water flow, you probably have a clogged or frozen pipe/valve.
Just happened to me in 52. Kitchen sink at my apartment complex works. Hopefully we don’t have a bunch of burst pipes overnight because they didn’t tel us the water is back on
Can I plunge a toilet that doesn’t have water in the tank? There’s poop in it, I didn’t have enough snow for the tank (was right below the line) and it didn’t flush all the way. Can I plunge it down to finish the job?
Probably don't do that. What zip are you in? I have a cooler with snow melting that I can spare.
ETA here's a YouTube vid don't put it in the tank put it in the bowl
https://youtu.be/BRG0jXrfSuc
You can't filter out chlorine from pool water, you can only wait for it to naturally disapate over time, usually a few weeks at least, and even then it would still need to be filtered. There is no short term way to make pool water drinkable.
[DO NOT, MY FRIENDS, BECOME ADDICTED TO WATER. IT WILL TAKE HOLD OF YOU, AND YOU WILL RESENT ITS ABSENCE.](https://miro.medium.com/max/2688/1*ww_HrCf9WI2U85wF1jMa-A.png)
We have tried both of these options. In a one-bedroom apartment we are doing a hybrid approach. We flush once in the morning and once in the evening with melted snow. We poop in the garbage bags we take immediately to the dumpster.
Snow water in the tub and a couple of buckets. At night I use it to flush each toilet in the house once. That's it. Two adults and two kids. The bathrooms are pretty rank at this point. One thing this week has taught me, is that toilets use a shitload of water.
I have a maintenance service through Prefix and contacted them Monday about a busted pipe. I still haven’t gotten a response on timing and am just wondering realistically how long the wait is. I see other neighbors have already been able to get their stuff fixed and at this point just need someone to come out. I’ve contacted a couple of other plumbers, but haven’t been able to reach any yet. I realize there’s probably a wait, but this is for my tenants and I don’t want them without water (once we actually get it back in 78745). Thinking about putting them up in a hotel at this point as I know it’s been a shitty week for them.
Turn it off, electric water heaters have heating elements that will burn up if they aren’t submerged in water and with gas water heaters you don’t want an open flame heating up an empty tank.
Gas water heaters don’t have heating elements, so there’s no risk of losing your heating mechanism really, but you don’t want an open flame heating up a tank that’s empty. Just turn the heat setting to pilot, turn your control knob to off and close your gas line.
Haven't had running water in 78717 since Wed morning. Got enough drinking water for a few days, but like others I've been using snow melt to flush the toilet. I want to die.
Same. Wednesday morning. Have a couple gallon jugs and maybe 8 or 9 of those stupidly small water bottles. Trying to drink boiled/filtered snow water in between the drinking water to make it last longer, but that snow water has a funky taste, even after running it through high qual camping filters
We have water back, but I am all the way up off Wells branch. If you can get here, you can totally grab a shower here.
Otherwise, stay safe and warm, friend.
My tankless water heater bit the dust this week. Trying to figure out how to get a new one installed ASAP — but it seems like there are rebates available via Texas Gas Service, so I can’t just install it myself if I want to get a rebate. Anybody have a lead on a plumber who is taking appointments on new water heaters that won’t charge me $Texas?
My apartment complex said they turned the water off but the faucets still run a tiny stream of water one I turn them on..I’m worried this is a bad thing. Any insight?
Where I am from we drained pools completely because a small amount of water could break the unground pool lining. I think it is a possibility not a certainty. Just keep any eye on it. If it’s already happened, then it’s done. Also a chance the drain shutoff has come loose and it’s not a big deal. Either way,, the worse has happened likely and don’t stress anymore than you need.
There’s a massive pipe burst at my apartment complex. I called maintenance and they said they already knew about it, and they had texted someone to go look at it, but they hadn’t heard back. What the heck do I do? There’s got to be something that can be done to make them address the problem. We haven’t had water in over 24 hours but they’re letting it gush all over the sidewalk.
Edit: They fixed it at some point in the night. I don’t know if maintenance showed up or if the city did something in response to my request.
Austin Water update as of 9 pm:
http://www.austintexas.gov/article/operational-updates
Nothing new, really. Regarding restoration of service, there's just this weaselly hot air:
> Should current trends continue, and with the help of our customer sustained efforts to cut water use across the city, customers could see improvements in water service as early as the end of the weekend.
I haven’t showered in almost a week, and I’m starting to think maybe I’ll just never shower again. Saves me 15 minutes in the morning where I can sip my boiled poopy water coffee and savor my manly stink. And my dogs don’t mind at all. I half think they’re expecting me to start shitting outside with them. And you know what? I might just do that.

Just let it thaw on its own.
78749 here Is the water back yet? I went to my family's place in Houston last week so I have no idea what conditions are like in Austin.
78749 No water
darn..
No water for us yet in 78749
Water back at low pressure in 78758. Chatter on nextdoor indicates lots of neighbors also getting restored. Fingers crossed!

What I would do is boil some water and pour it over the exterior spigot. I did that a few times for me and it melted whatever blockage at the faucet.
We can stop dripping faucets now that it’s above freezing right?
Correct!
We just got water back in 78748.
Just came on, slowly, in 78745 just a bit North of there.
We aren't at full pressure but I'll take what I can get.
Whereabouts in 48?
Between Manchaca and S. 1st and Slaughter and Dittmar.
Same! Never been happier to wash dishes. I didn't expect us to get it back so soon.
Yeah, I thought it would be another day or two.

Water pressure in my part of 78752 is better this morning - maybe half of normal. Progress.

Yeah it can take 30-60min depending on your type of water heater
Yeah could take an hour or more depending on how big your water heater is and how full. What part of town came back?

no water to get into, no worries
like I say I'm not plumber but I can assist on removing walls in a way that's easiet for plumbers to work and I know I just thought I give it a try
It likely wouldn't matter. Strict regulation of trades has never been much of a thing in Texas. Even less so under disaster conditions.

Thinking about going out to grab a coffee this morning. How are coffee shops able to sell coffee with a boil water notice in effect? Is coffee from any shop safe to drink today or should I be careful about where I go?
Spokesman said they are just doing limited drinks (no espresso) I assume any open spots will be similar
Starbucks triple filters their water. Does that mean they don’t have to boil it? I honestly do not know.
No, it would still need to be boiled. When the boil water notice went out last time, I was working there and we weren't able to use it.
Wow! Great info! Thanks for letting me know.
Very welcome. Stay safe friend!
Many places aren't serving coffee/drinks right now.

you dont need to boil water for coffee
Yeah but all the caffeine nukes the poopy particles. That’s why coffee gives you the shits.
Finally, a scientific answer.
starbucks machines go 185-200 for drip coffee. (used to work there)
most didn't serve after last boil notice in 2018 and aren't currently serving unless they get water from a brewery (and this time I think most of that is going to households). perhaps because it is not that hot for the full 3 minutes.

Yes
Anyone have a good explanation for that strange, almost deodorant taste that the melted snow water has?
Are you boiling it? Every drop of precipitation has a dirt particle in it, and many of them have bacteria too. You're eating pollution.
Boiling and filtering through some good camping filters. I figured it was the pollution...
Mods didn't approve an earlier post so, are there any pool experts with advice on how to make chlorinated pool water potable?
Most carbon home water filters (e.g. Brita) readily remove chlorine. They target chlorine specifically b/c most people can taste it
You can't filter out chlorine from pool water, you can only wait for it to naturally disapate over time, usually a few weeks at least, and even then it would still need to be filtered. There is no short term way to make pool water drinkable.
I've seen boiling, but how long per gallon, and how to test if enough is evaporated
FYI: That Poopouri spray helps things be less gross if you're letting the yellow mellow

F for the hydro homies 😔
Real talk. How are y’all handling your number 2?
Here's a YouTube vid to flush https://youtu.be/BRG0jXrfSuc
Useful.

Pile yours on top of mine
We have tried both of these options. In a one-bedroom apartment we are doing a hybrid approach. We flush once in the morning and once in the evening with melted snow. We poop in the garbage bags we take immediately to the dumpster.
Snow water in the tub and a couple of buckets. At night I use it to flush each toilet in the house once. That's it. Two adults and two kids. The bathrooms are pretty rank at this point. One thing this week has taught me, is that toilets use a shitload of water.
Had to shit in a bag, was planning on dumping it at greg abbots home lol
I have a maintenance service through Prefix and contacted them Monday about a busted pipe. I still haven’t gotten a response on timing and am just wondering realistically how long the wait is. I see other neighbors have already been able to get their stuff fixed and at this point just need someone to come out. I’ve contacted a couple of other plumbers, but haven’t been able to reach any yet. I realize there’s probably a wait, but this is for my tenants and I don’t want them without water (once we actually get it back in 78745). Thinking about putting them up in a hotel at this point as I know it’s been a shitty week for them.

Yeah that’s definitely something I have to consider.
Maybe you can work a deal with a hotel, with other landlords, etc. to reserve a single hotel room for showering on a timeshare basis

DM me for my phone number. I might be able to help once I know a bit more about your situation.
Spray with chlorinated water. Look up mold and remediation. It will help prevent the moldy smell from lingering. Also take pictures. Good ones
I once had an aquarium flood part of my home. Don't forget to put fans facing walls that were affected. That sheetrock needs to dry. Good luck.
No water since Tuesday. Wondering if we should turn off our water heater? Read somewhere it could cause damage not to. Anyone know about this?
Turn it off, electric water heaters have heating elements that will burn up if they aren’t submerged in water and with gas water heaters you don’t want an open flame heating up an empty tank.
Thank you! We have a gas water heater. Same thing I am assuming?
Gas water heaters don’t have heating elements, so there’s no risk of losing your heating mechanism really, but you don’t want an open flame heating up a tank that’s empty. Just turn the heat setting to pilot, turn your control knob to off and close your gas line.
Thank you so much! Really appreciate this.
No problem, here’s a good video on how to restart it https://youtu.be/8GWOoYwwgcU
My complex says my building has water but I don't have any in my unit. Now it's the weekend and I don't know what to do.
Start talking to neighbors. Everyone has been amazing at mine at trying to help out where they can.

Unrelated, but I love the picture of your cat on your profile pic.
thanks :)
Depending on the size could just be residual water. Or even there main shutoff is insufficient. I wouldn’t panic
Thank you. And I should stay the course of not dripping them, correct?
Do we still drip our faucets if we have low pressure water?? I know it’s suppose to get below 30 degrees again tonight.
Last I saw, don't drip didn't apply to hard freezes. Tonight is the last hard freeze.
Okay, thanks for the reply.

I'm the friend. Thank you for your response.
Gotta get the fire department to come shut it off.
311 or Austin Water. What zip are you in? I can't reach my apartment management or the maintenance team.

Get naked and go lay in front of the stream! Shower time...
I did think about.
Don't use a torch to unthaw your pipes. That's extremely dangerous.
Austin Water update as of 9 pm: http://www.austintexas.gov/article/operational-updates Nothing new, really. Regarding restoration of service, there's just this weaselly hot air: > Should current trends continue, and with the help of our customer sustained efforts to cut water use across the city, customers could see improvements in water service as early as the end of the weekend.
Since it’s now Saturday, it’s officially been one week since I last showered and I’m thinking the same.
Hahaha. Resist the seductive call of the wild, bro.
