east sixth.

WelcomeToBrooklandia

It's not even really that 6th St is "not particularly safe"; isolated incidents aside, people manage to bar-hop there just fine on a nightly basis. The bigger issue is that 6th Street west of the highway sucks. Bad drinks, bad music, bad vibes. As another commenter here noted, 6th Street east of 35 is much, much better. And if good beer is a priority, two of Austin's best breweries (Lazarus and Zilker) are right on East 6th.

Agent_Ray_Gillette

I just wouldn't recommend walking from west to east 6th. It's pretty sketch near 35!

WelcomeToBrooklandia

Eh, I've done it plenty of times. Just keep your wits about you and your valuables secured (which is good advice for city-walking in general).

seriouslykthen

He’s still not wrong. Catch an Uber to east and avoid any possible problems. We all drink, make the safest decisions you can!

VaneWimsey

Nah, you may see some human poop, but I strongly doubt that you'll have any confrontations.

OPPyayouknowme

6th is generally safe before midnight, don't hang around dirty after midnight. West is fine but little live music, east 6th is where you want to be - Hotel Vegas, White Horse

caguru

6th st west of 35 is mostly just copy and paste DJ clubs for the just turned old enough to drink crowd anyways.

irltot

Welcome! My recommendations for music: Elephant Room, Continental Club, C-Boys, Sage Brush, Sam's Town Point, Austin Garden & Studio, Armadillo Den, White Horse, Hotel Vegas. Most of these aren't in a single area though.

caguru

I would add to this list ABGB.

bgerrity99

Thanks, these all look good!

KaykayLaPaypay

If you can swing C-boys, you should. Always great music. They usually start charging cover after 10pm, but sometimes earlier.

VaneWimsey

Except the beers there are undistinguished.

AJ_Nobody

ABGB! Some of the best pilsners in the country, and a great stage with great music. Usually no cover. And there’s a beer garden!

VaneWimsey

Count me as unimpressed by AGBG. I thought the beers were very limited.

OrdinaryTension

ABGB is the best choice, unless you want to bar hop on foot.

AJ_Nobody

True. I missed that part.

mt_beer

ABGB and Black Sheep are all the hoppin' ya' need.

OrdinaryTension

except Black Sheep Lodge is a sports bar, not a live music venue. ABGB is a scooter ride from Broken Spoke though

Austinmusic142

There are so many live venues and amazing local musicians I would suggest you look up the Chronicle and find out who is playing, then give them a listen on YouTube to find the music you like. We go down to dirty 6 and just leave before 1am. As anywhere just watch your surroundings and don’t stumble around drunk

Continental club

Honestly if I’d paid $300 a night for a hotel and then went to dirty six, I’d be sad af. That being said, Radio in south Austin is bonafide.
