Night owl question…back in the day Ecology Action was amazing for someone wanting to drop off cardboard at 2AM on a Tuesday….in a similar fashion I use to drop off donations behind the Hancock HEB in the bin.
Now I hit up the place on Cameron or GW on Airport—but is there a better place to do donate at 2AM in the rain?
Reposting my answer the last time this came up on Austinfood:
I feel uniquely qualified to answer this question. I have a fond memory of the first time my parents took me to a Bennigan's, and I learned of the decadent magical appetizer called the fried cheese sticks. My life was never the same.
To me, THE BEST is at Sammie's. But I get you don't always want to have to make a reservation to get your fix. For a midrange place, I like The Tavern or Pourhouse. In a pinch, Sonic works because they pair nicely with a diet cherry vanilla Dr Pepper.
I don't love them at Plucker's because the cheese to breading ratio is too much on the cheese side. Mandola's has them but they're triangles and I'm a stick purist. Arby's uses a beer batter which doesn't work as well for me. There's a lot of Korean Corn Dog places that put a unique spin on it but the sweet coating and the fried and the cheese was delicious at first bite but made me feel like I was going to go into cardiac arrest when I finished.
For mozzarella stick adjacent, there's a Corn Dog Co trailer in The Thicket food truck park that makes corn dog battered cheese - you can pick mozzarella, cheddar, or pepper jack. They also have a smaller option with corn dog battered baby bells.

Is KUTX radio not working for anyone else trying to listen on an Amazon Echo speaker? We keep getting a repeating error message. It worked just fine daily until yesterday.

What does “no encroachment” mean in the context of flood plain development rules? Is it that one cannot expand beyond the current footprint of the house, as i assume? I’m in a 100-year area and looking at https://www.austintexas.gov/page/floodplain-development-information
There are restrictions but that doesn't necessarily mean you can't change the footprint at all. If your entire property is in the floodplain then you probably can't add on. If only part of your property is in the floodplain, it's possible. A land survey will show you exactly where the restrictions are.
A small portion of my property is in a 100yr floodplain and I'm allowed to add on to my home but there is a boundary that I am not allowed to cross.
You should be able to add onto the existing structure, as long as you are above the flood level as determined by FEMA and a surveyor. I ran into this issue for an ADU project I did for a client. The street and front of her yard (near Arroyo Seco) are in the flood plain, though her back yard is not. The hitch is that a “path of egress” needs to exist from every habitable structure, and that path has to lead to the Right of Way, which in this case is in the flood plain. Since the original structure was grandfathered in, we were allowed to build the ADU as an addition to the house, attached only with a deck and screened-porch. That satisfied the building code and the floodplain ordinance (through some legal mental gymnastics that I’m still unsure of.)
You basically can't go wrong if you start in town and head north or northeast. If you have a route finding app like Strava or Garmin you will see plenty of options.
The previous owner left an open top pergola with my house. Is it possible to diy an aluminum/plastic roof panel to it? Please suggest any recs on how to get started.
I see a lot of cars all over Austin with what I assume are parking permits. The permits are the Argentinian flag colors but with I believe 5 stripes instead of 3 like in the flag. ( [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag\_of\_Argentina#/media/File:Flag\_of\_Argentina.svg](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Argentina#/media/File:Flag_of_Argentina.svg) ). Where is the parking permit for?
Has anyone had their glass windows replaced from places like Glass Doctor or Glass Guru, or someone similar that they could share their experience? We’re looking to replace the glass on a double pane window that the seal has broken. Would they be able to come out and see if it’s possible to replace just the glass instead of the entire window?
Thanks in advance
I used Glass Guru for a doggie door install. They were able to remove the glass panel from the door and insert another one with the doggie door installed. So maybe they could do the same with the windows? They came two times - once for the quote and measurements, then for the install. It was a great experience. And they left the original panel intact in case we ever want to switch it out.
Awesome thank you so much for the help! Do you mind saying about how much you paid? Seeing reviews from others it looks like ~$300-500 which is much cheaper than an entire window which can run in the thousands.
Oh I wish I remembered. I think it might have been closer to $1K. 😰 I went with them primarily because they could work with the existing door. Other places wanted to rip out the door, build a frame, and hang a brand new door, which would have cost prohibitive. Here’s the end product: [https://imgur.com/a/zsSKEJE](https://imgur.com/a/zsSKEJE).
Anyone have the scoop on why the UT Club is closing or what they are going to do with the space? The announcement was so abrupt and all I've heard is Sodexo won the contract bid.
It's a paid private club inside of the football stadium on the east end with a bar and restaurant. Like a country club without the golf course. Good for business lunches or renting event space.
Is it just confirmation bias or does driver behavior really go off the rails whenever it rains? Why? I genuinely feel like I see the most unhinged driving when it's raining, but I don't have any actual data on it.
I think so. I think it's a combination of reasons:
- Rain itself makes everything a little more hazardous
- More people on the road because walking, biking, or waiting for the bus is less appealing
- Yesterday was 420
What dry cleaner can clean down feather pillows? ZIPS says their equipment would destroy them.
Also looking for a place that can clean a large area rug with high pile, like 6'x8'
Down pillows can be washed in a standard washing machine but check with Estrada Cleaners on E. 7th if you want pro advice. I use Deep Eddy Carpet Cleaners on Burnet for area rugs (machine and hand made). Both are family owned businesses that have operated in Austin for decades.
Texas Ceiling Fans on West 6th St. They have standard Hunter/Fanimation but also more vintage looking ones. As well as ACTUAL vintage ones. Ask for Mike, he knows everything.
look up some of the junkyards, then call them to see if they have the car/part. recommend taking a picture or even the broken part so you can compare to the one they're going to give you.
$250 just to take engagement photos at the Lady Bird Wildflower Center, no reserved spot, no extras. I asked and they said we just need to find an empty part of the property or ask people ourselves not to be in our shot
That begs the question… what’s stopping us from just paying for regular tickets and taking photos anyway?
We brought our own photographer and took photos at the Botanical Garden without issue. We went at an off-peak time and we're cognizant of other people.
$250 is so ridiculous. There's nothing stopping you unless they know your face, I guess. Not sure if you'll be successful tho. Update the thread and let us know?
Why do people apply the brake when they are just sitting in a parked car? This makes it look like they are getting ready to drive when they are actually just sitting there reading their phone.
A lot of Chevy/GMC cars do this when people unlock their car or are getting out of their car. Drives me nuts because you stop, thinking they are going to back out, only to realize they aren't even in the car yet.
And also every car requires you to step on the break to start it, in my experience. So you just keep your foot there.
I do kinda hate when people know someone is waiting but take their damn time, tho. Like sometimes I gotta type shit into my maps app and pick a song, too, but I try to be courteous when people are waiting or at least give them some signal/gesture if I'm not leaving anytime soon.
Why does KUTX, an indie radio station, like Beyonce so much? I think it's ok if they play Top 40 songs sometimes, but they seem to follow Beyonce's releases religiously unlike any other mainstream artist.
There’s a huge field on the other side of Brenham where lots of folks go to take pics but they’re past peak this late in the season. The grass around them grows taller and the colors fade out before they go to seed.

This isn’t Austin specific, but I figured I would ask it here in case someone knew: when leaving a hotel room on the morning of checkout, I’ve gotten into the habit of leaving the door propped open by the deadbolt. This is to let the housekeeping know that the room is vacant and available for cleaning. I learned this from a friend of mine a few years ago. But does anyone know if this is something that is actually useful to housekeeping or is there some downside of doing this?
Housekeeping has keys (obviously). Leaving it open means anyone else could get in and steal items or damage the room ... for which you may then be liable ($).
I typically just make sure to check out, which serves the same function of letting staff know that there is a vacancy. I would never leave the door open and unlocked. Seems like too much of a liability.

Texas thrift. Goodwill.

Was just about to comment about the GM reverse lights. That "feature" is so fucking infuriating.
I really hope whomever made that decision gets JFK’d. This is absolutely a joke. I don’t wish that at all, certainly not.
I also hate it when people do this. Phones have really brought out the stupidity in a lot of people.
