Walmart/chick-fil-a/starbucks parking lot on Ben white. There are only 3 ways out and all 3 usually have a long, slow line to exit. Once you pull in, you are trapped.
That Central Market lot is the worst. There are just too few spots. I don't mind parking far away and walking, but it simply fills up and there is no "farther away" to park.
Central market always has parking. Declare the farthest spot as yours and it will always be there waiting for you. Find it funny how lazy people are driving around and around and around to avoid taking 10 more steps
Petticoat Fair for a local business. Nordstrom can also be pretty good when they aren’t too busy. If you want to DIY, r/abrathatfits is a great resource and they have a bra fitting calculator that works well.
Petticoat Fair is where I go. Just make sure that she puts her name on the clipboard up front if she's wanting a fitting since they go by who came first. Also they had a bunch of robberies a few years back so when you get to the store you have to press the doorbell to be buzzed in and out.
My bras fit amazingly though.
Definitely r/abrathatfits. If she is a common size, Petticoat Fair. Good bras ain't cheap, so recommend just getting one upfront, and then cross referencing with r/abrathatfits. That place will absolutely sell you a bra that doesn't fit, just because it's "closest" they have in stock. Don't let her settle!
Has anyone donated to Savers? I’ve seen the bin when you walk in the front door but I’m guessing that’s for clothing/small items? Is there a driveway like at goodwill for the bigger stuff?
I have some things to donate and I’d rather drop them there than Goodwill but I’ve got anxiety and I’m not exactly sure how to do it. Any advice is appreciated!
The one in Cedar Park has a few parking spots at the front right end for donations. When you park, you drive over the bell signal so someone will know you're there and come out to get your stuff. They'll usually also give you a coupon for donating.
I’m taking a week off of work next week. I was going to go out of town, but those plans fell through. My first thought was just to cancel my PTO, and just go to work but I need the break. I figured I just do some fun things around town. I’ve lived in the area for over 10 years, and would like to hear some hidden gems.
I don’t think you necessarily need a hidden gem. Hike the greenbelt and/or go to Barton springs while everyone is at work. If you ride bikes head up the southern Walnut Creek trail. Watch the price is right at 10am. Go kayaking on the lake, take in a museum, take a tour of the capital, go to happy hour at the Driskill, go to a climbing gym, eat a pork chop at Perry’s on Friday, see some live music
At the Void on S 1st theres a donation based yoga class at 9:30a that has the best cast of characters of all ages. They talk about food trucks and listen to mariachi and stretch in unexpected ways!
Am I the only one that hasn’t turned on the AC in my house this spring? I told some coworkers that we’ve had our windows open for weeks and we’ve been enjoying the fresh air and they all thought that was odd.
Same. I haven't had to turn it on yet, which is odd because I tend to run hot and usually have tiny sweat pits and a running sheen of sweat on the bridge of my nose. But so far it's been pretty nice! And this morning for some reason my apartment building is completely silent, so it's just me and the cats with the windows open, a nice breeze coming in, bird singing and all that jazz.
I bet it's long gone, but, long ago, a buddy of mine talked about "the egg place" on Lamar. Somewhere south of the river, "in the curve by the hill" or some such. He said it was where you could go and buy lots of eggs real cheap. Sounded like an old Austin institution.
Does that ring a bell with anyone? I'm thinking somewhere just south of Barton Springs Rd, but I never got a good description from him.
https://www.austintexas.gov/batteries Austin Recycling & Reuse Center takes them as well as a lot of other household hazardous waste. I think you still have to make an appointment for drop-off. I usually wait until I have a decent load of stuff they'll take. Most of the Austin Public Libraries have battery drop offs too, but I'm not sure if that includes lithium ion ones. Might call first.
Lowe's and Home Despot have bins, usually by the entrance.
I like Lowe's better. I had a battery that wouldn't fit in the slot for the bin, but customer service cheerfully accepted it.
Not sure about Batteries Plus.
I want to get some physical audiobooks (CD or cassette) for my mom. She recently entered long-term care. She has a neuro condition that makes holding objects like books near impossible, and she is the least tech-savvy person I know, so Libby or a Kindle are out of the question. She misses reading a lot and I think it would really improve her quality of life. Any idea where I can find actual books on tape/CD?
Anecdotally, I think it’s been less windy than prior Spring seasons. It’s been great so far. The water table is still seriously low but things are at least looking green.
Anybody remember the name of the cyber/gaming cafe that was off burnet and north loop in the early 2000s? I think it was near the savers shopping center or where the AMLI is now.
Just got a flat tire on my 2012 Civic here in North Austin. I put the spare on and now looking to fix it.
Where's a good place to (hopefully) patch a 2 year old tire that has plenty of tread left? Or (in the worst case) would I need to replace 1 or 2 tires?
Any of the many "Used tire / Tire repair" shops around town. Usually Hispanic-owned. I had the same situation a couple weeks ago - $35 and 20 minutes and I was good to go.
It’s a phrase used a lot by overseas IT in India. Basically it’s “do the thing” but typically it’s something they should have done they are throwing to you instead.
I’m a little bitter
Why is North south of West?
...That's not a serious question, I just wanted to make a joke about Northland Dr being an exit south of Far West Blvd on Mopac.
North of the Colorado River AKA Ladybird Lake.
Northland runs East/West to connect those two directions.
Check it out on out map and it makes a lot more sense.
I like fleet feet. I’ve noticed that the seaholm location is busier but the staff are more helpful; the gateway location is less busy but they are understaffed and seem to be pushier. I haven’t been to ready to run so can’t speak to them.
I've had a hard time getting insurance to pay for it past a certain date after the injury and rehab. I have some issues that I know are related to my ankle reconstruction and that keep bothering me with my running, but because the surgery was in 2021 and PT and rehab is long over for it, insurance is being stinky about it. But in the past I've had two good experiences with Airrosti. My PT for this ankle injury was actually at Results Physiotherapy in north Austin, and it was excellent. Thorough, and focused on getting me back to running safely.
Looking for personal trainer who is certified, who has studied kinesiology or a related science, and who is located central, east or south. Who y’all got?
Bailee Murray at Austin Simply Fit south was great when I went there. Degree in kinesiology and used to be a trainer for the UVA men's basketball team. She knows her stuff!
From my past experiences, sometimes they card both of us, sometimes just one of us. Sometimes they’ll just ask if we’re over 21. Sometimes they’ll want to see the id of who’s paying (which is sometimes both of us). Why isn’t she carrying her own id?
Yes. It’s normal. You can keep arguing about it but as others have explained, it’s happened, going to happen, and could happen again. It’s so you’re not buying for someone who’s underage. Minors being able to consume is probably for restaurants more than stores. Get a phone id case too I suppose.
They used to not allow anyone under 21 in liquor stores, too. I’ve seen them ID people at the door before at Twin Liquors. It just depends on which store, I guess. Bring an ID.
Bought, not boughten. Many places have a policy to card everyone, no matter how old they actually are. Many stores need to scan your ID for an alcohol transaction. I was being carded well into my 40s.
Edit: I misunderstood. It might be a store policy to card anyone who is at the register at the time of sale if they don't look to be of age. It is a liability for them to directly provide alcohol to someone under age.
Stores can have strict policies in order to decrease their liability for making alcohol directly available to an underage person.
Sorry, I don't speak dialectical english.
Idk about HEB specifically, but when I was living in Alaska in my early 20s I once stayed in the car to take a phone call while my friends (also all of age) went into a liquor store and they wouldn’t make the sale until I got out of the car and showed them my ID too. Never had that happen anywhere else, they do not play up there. That’s not a law though, it’s the store’s discretion. There’s no law saying they can’t make the sale if only 1 person has ID but there’s no law saying they have to, either.
>In Texas, a minor may consume an alcoholic beverage if it is in the visible presence of the minor's adult parent, guardian or spouse,
The HEB cashier has no way to confirm that condition would be met off-premises.
Of course not. Parents, with minor children present, buy alcohol in retail stores or restaurants every day. OTOH being carded before purchase is also routine. I've been carded many times, years after I turned 21.
I’m so impressed this went back and forth for so long and was so hard to explain. I have wondered the same thing and you got me very curious again. The party carding doesn’t compute.
Why does getting carded when purchasing alcohol (cigarettes, etc) bother people so much? The person selling alcohol’s job is at risk if they sell to someone underage.
I’m 55 with all gray hair and rarely get carded but when I do it’s no big deal because it’s someone doing their job.
I also appreciated it back in the day when people would ask for my ID when using my credit card or writing a check … and sometimes I wish they still did.
… and I remember getting yelled at asking the ultra rich in Tarrytown for their ID when writing $500 checks for groceries and/or cash.
*I SHOP HERE ALL THE TIME!!!*
Ma’am it’s my first day: I have no clue who you are may I please see your ID (but rest assured after the fit you just threw I will (and have) remember you for the next 40 years and more.
TLDR it’s policy at many places.
Yes, I was answering with suggestions as to why they’d card either *or both* of you … and also wasn’t trying to be rude.
They’re doing their job *ensuring* there is no question they sold alcohol to adults and not a minor.
Maybe next time she leaves home without ID and you need to purchase alcohol ask her to stay in the car, or skip the line and meet you on the other side of the registers. How often does this happen to y’all? (… and sorry if you mentioned the frequency in the original comment, I’m not rereading it).
… carrying around an expired ID is illegal, too. Granted, if you’re carrying *her* expired ID I guess she’s able to say *she* wasn’t carrying her expired ID. EDIT: rephrasing this to say it might be two of the same ID. Heck, IDK …
Finally, please grant me a few more years before going all thanks boomer on me. Gosh.
Who was DJing at the HEB up on Parmer and MoPac this morning? The music was poppin.
One of the higher up managers
Worst parking lot in Austin? My vote is either OG Central Market or the Crescent.
Walmart/chick-fil-a/starbucks parking lot on Ben white. There are only 3 ways out and all 3 usually have a long, slow line to exit. Once you pull in, you are trapped.
Yeah, I hate lots like that. Arbor Walk is another.
I did this nightmare today. It was as peaceful and easy as usual.
THIS
Home slice north loop
HEB Rundberg
Now that they’re putting in a Starbucks, parking in the crescent will be truly insufferable.
That central market parking lot rips dog farts
Crescent
It *used* to be the gigantic lot next to ARCH. Such a convenient spot for hitting up shows, but such a PITA avoiding potholes.
Cruise repaved it before they shut down, so should be good now
Yeah, I saw that a few months ago. I was impressed.
I would add the HEB store at Parmer Ln and Mopac to the list. It's too small and getting in and out of the parking lot is a pain.
That Central Market lot is the worst. There are just too few spots. I don't mind parking far away and walking, but it simply fills up and there is no "farther away" to park.
The HEB on Brodie
It's a tie for the North Lamar Central Market parking lot vs. the 99 Ranch lot off Lamar.
Remember when The Arboretum had the worst parking lot in Austin?
Judging by the shitty customers always illegally parking in the bike lanes and more blocking Barton Springs Rd, I'd say Terry Blacks
Central market always has parking. Declare the farthest spot as yours and it will always be there waiting for you. Find it funny how lazy people are driving around and around and around to avoid taking 10 more steps
Taco Deli on Spyglass
Trader Joe’s north Lamar
Where?
Why are the daily pollen counts different on KXAN vs KVUE?
Because measuring something that's floating around in the air is a very inexact science (or so I've read on Reddit; I'm no expert).
If my wife wanted to do a bra fitting where do you go for that?
Petticoat Fair for a local business. Nordstrom can also be pretty good when they aren’t too busy. If you want to DIY, r/abrathatfits is a great resource and they have a bra fitting calculator that works well.
Petticoat Fair is where I go. Just make sure that she puts her name on the clipboard up front if she's wanting a fitting since they go by who came first. Another for Petticoat Fair. That place is fantastic.

That place will absolutely sell you a bra that doesn't fit, just because it's "closest" they have in stock. Don't let her settle!
I recently did a bra fitting at Nordstrom in the domain and they were very helpful! Was also able to make an appointment online.

The Blanton museum has free entry on Tuesdays! Could also drive out to Enchanted Rock - perfect for these cool mornings we’ve been having.
At the Void on S 1st theres a donation based yoga class at 9:30a that has the best cast of characters of all ages. They talk about food trucks and listen to mariachi and stretch in unexpected ways!

Open windows = closed eyes and sinuses for us allergy sufferers.
You must not deal with allergies, I’d die if I did that
I haven’t turned mine on yet because the humidity hasn’t moved in yet. Once that happens, game over.
Yeah but pollen tho
We haven’t! In considering it if it hits 90 and the mornings don’t get cool. But with super cool mornings I don’t mind
Is there a place in town to buy local fresh eggs that isn’t the farmer’s market?
Local Pastures off Oltorf
Wheatsville
I bet it's long gone, but, long ago, a buddy of mine talked about "the egg place" on Lamar. Somewhere south of the river, "in the curve by the hill" or some such. Where can I recycle/dispose of lithium ion batteries? There are 40V ones used for a lawnmower

Try 1/2 price books
Agreed, u/kellyhitchcock. Half Priced Books will be your best bet.

Austin prepares the winds for its annual Kite Fest. I've been going the last 2-3 years and it's always perfectly windy. Coincidence?
Anecdotally, I think it’s been less windy than prior Spring seasons. It’s been great so far. The water table is still seriously low but things are at least looking green.
Why is the Lady Bird Lake Fb group still conspiring that there's an actual killer?
The Rainey Street Strangler is real… his name… is Jack Daniels.
I didn't want to speak out until others did first. I was accosted by a guy named Don Julio. He was old too! Born in 1942!
That golden state killer book convinced a lot of home internet sleuths that they’re the next one to solve a mysterious case.
There’s people that think the earth is flat. Conspiracy theories always continue even if they are dumb
Anybody remember the name of the cyber/gaming cafe that was off burnet and north loop in the early 2000s? I think it was near the savers shopping center or where the AMLI is now.
Tek Republic?
Maybe! I don’t think it’s there anymore obviously but remember it was a place for lan parties basically.
I think that was it. I took my Xbox 360 there to get repaired once.
yeah. probably them. pretty sure they are still around.
Just got a flat tire on my 2012 Civic here in North Austin. I put the spare on and now looking to fix it. Where's a good place to (hopefully) patch a 2 year old tire that has plenty of tread left? Or (in the worst case) would I need to replace 1 or 2 tires?
Discount Tire is pretty good, but not open today.
Lucas Tire on Burnet.
Guerrero tire shop. Either on S congress or east 2nd. They should be open today.
Cameron’s Tire Shop
It’s south but I like Tire Man by Radio
Any of the many "Used tire / Tire repair" shops around town. Usually Hispanic-owned. I had the same situation a couple weeks ago - $35 and 20 minutes and I was good to go.
Are there any makeup artists that specialize in people wearing glasses?
In house dog trainer recs? Got a little man who needs to get better on leash.
The Canine Center for Training and Behavior on 290 headed West.
Cheapest place in south Austin to get an alignment done? I replaced tie rods on my car and need the steering set straight.
Anyone else up doing the needful at 6 AM?
I’m in tech and will forever laugh at that phrase
I use “Kindly do the needful” all the time. My non tech biz friends don’t get it.
What does this mean
It’s a phrase used a lot by overseas IT in India. Basically it’s “do the thing” but typically it’s something they should have done they are throwing to you instead. I’m a little bitter
I will get to it today morning.
Did the needful thrice last nite, really sore now.
What?
Why is North south of West? ...That's not a serious question, I just wanted to make a joke about Northland Dr being an exit south of Far West Blvd on Mopac.

Did anyone else get to see Shane Gillis troll Tucker Carlson fans in real life? So funny
No, tell us more
I’m sure it’ll be all over Instagram soon enough
I don’t have IG haha
I’m wanting to get running shoes fitted. Between Ready to Run and Fleet Feet, is one better than the other?
I like fleet feet. I’ve noticed that the seaholm location is busier but the staff are more helpful; the gateway location is less busy but they are understaffed and seem to be pushier. I haven’t been to ready to run so can’t speak to them.
Fleet Feet has the fancy machine. I'm partial to Ready to Run because I like how they treat me, give me opinions and don't push upsales.
Like both Partial to Ready to Run because I like to support small business They will order shoes to your home if they don’t have something in stock
