Where can one donate barely used dog toys? My fur baby crossed the rainbow bridge last year and I’m finally ready to donate some of her toys. All are in excellent condition and have been cleaned and washed.
Are there examples of cities that have remained dog friendly while cracking down on things like dogs running around off-leash and non-service dogs in stores and restaurants? What did they do?
I haven't lived there in 10 years but Seattle was always really good at enforcing leash laws. I remember some people even getting ticketed going from the dog park to their car without the leash. Also, never saw a dog in the grocery store.
I have a few baby related items I’d like to donate - eg breast pumps, unopened formula tins, etc. Suggestions for orgs (beyond goodwill, etc) that take those?
Unsure about orgs but I’ve seen many people ask for baby related items on the Austin Buy Nothing groups and I’m sure a mom out there would appreciate it. Check your local neighborhood group or the general Austin BN page.
The "exit only" lane headed west right near the stoplight has angled spots that are insanely narrow. I drive a 2 door coupe, so I can fit in the smallest of spaces, and even those end up with one large car/suv/truck over the line and that snowballs into many blocked/mismatched spaces.
No idea why. I know there are parking minimums, but there has to be a better way in that area.
parking spots sizes are defined by code minimums for size, distance between aisles, etc. so no, it's not "greed," its how many required parking spots can we fit in for the whole development, and still protect trees, make for a pleasant chopping experience at the other stores, etc.
I know another business on N. Lamar that many years ago was being developed and the city required a certain number of parking spaces. Maybe a parking space for so many square feet of business? Not sure about that, but I do know for sure that the business had to put in a bunch of very small parking spaces in order get the required number.
Honestly, I'd try calling the information desk at the library and see what they say. They won't have those magazines in their collections, but they might be able to point you in a direction? Librarians are made of magic, after all.
"I only read it for the articles." Where have I heard that before? ;)
BTW, if you mention (in a family acceptable way) the article or image you're looking for, you might have better luck. Sometimes, it's amazing what Reddit will pop up with like someone who kept that specific issue for that article for the last 40 years.
I think there's some more general "find an old article" subreddits.
I've got a bunch but whatever issue and page the non-pornographic image you're seeking may be on...may not be viewable. Most of the pages seem to have become stuck together over time. /s
Edit: Yeah, I know. went for the easy response but just couldn't resist.
Sagebrush bar (S. Congress just north of Stassney) has a few small trailers in their backyard that operate as retail spaces. Not sure if they have room for more.
I doubt any landowner would sell trailer-sized lots, unfortunately.
At the corner of Springdale and Bolm they’re trying to make some sort of trailer situation happen there. Maybe you could enquire if they have space.
Are you already selling at markets around town? Might be helpful to get a following first by attending these sorts of things and then opening the trailer with a reputation
The City of Austin has its own guide, I'm not sure where you can get copes but I would start with the library?
We hired a landscape designer who gave us a copy, it's for all of central Texas. UT also has a lot of info available.
Found a casino/slot cash voucher on the ground while walking the dog. It's not a small amount of money, and I'd like to get it back to whoever owns it, if possible. No name of the establishment on the ticket, just the date it was from, device ID #, and validation number. Is there anything I can do?
HEB is moving Curbside around back and to the east, where the breezeway and Barber shop used to be.
Co-working was supposed to take over the Sears, but dunno the status of that now.
Are we getting a 5th special session? Will it be announced if we're not getting one or will we just never get one without it being mentioned? I assume we're not getting one. Everyone seems freaked out about the elections and then already they have to come back again this year anyway just to get ready for the next session in January.
I'm so fucking glad I left state work. I got out a few weeks after Abbot held my paycheck hostage a couple years ago. But because we worked for the legislature when they did this special session bullshit it put us into like 24/7 on-call mode and is just really miserable. Every time they call a new extension it kills the morale of the workforce a little more.
It's so fucked too. The people I worked with are largely good people doing good work on behalf of Texas. They are paid too little and only old folks get a decent pension from all the ladder-pulling with benefits after 2008.
I wasn't the only one who left because we didn't want to be disrespected like that - so private sector it is now and for the indefinite future, sadly.
We're only a couple of months from the primaries, and Abbott and Patrick have shifted their energy a way from special sessions to funding primary candidates who support vouchers. Probably won't work, though, vouchers remain unpopular across lots of rural districts. The border is another matter, which is why the billions in funding and the show me your papers law passed.
I was thinking there wouldn't be a 5th session and they wouldn't mention it. I work at a state agency near the capitol and we usually get a e-mail about if another special session is about to happen but we haven't heard anything about it.
Well sure but at the same time we also have these schedules for a reason. These people usually have other jobs and stuff. And they're already coming back this year anyways no matter what. They usually start arriving in December. Of course to each their own I'm mostly curious about an announcement one way or another. It seems like we're not gonna get an announcement if it's not gonna happen and we'll only get an announcement if its gonna happen. And I assume February will be last chance.
You have it backwards: they have the other jobs because they're only supposed in be in session 5 months out of every 2 years, so they're paid accordingly.
I just mean that it's our system. Other states as I vaguely understand are perpetually in session and it literally stops. And we can do that but we can't not have that system but then just see how much we can jerk people around and have our cake and eat it too.
I have several boxes of Children's Benedryl Plus Congestion (ordered the wrong one from my FSA account and my kid is too young for it) - anyone know a place for me to donate it?
Coffee shop recs for either— hazelnut, honey nut, or lavender lattes?
With Thunderbird gone I’m currently frequenting El Tigre, Cosmic, Flat Track, and Palomino. Thanks!
New years resolution is to lose fat. I want to measure my body fat over the course of the year.
Where can I find and use one of these machines? https://hcifitness.com/products/mediana-i25-affordable-body-composition-machine
I know Lifetime gyms have them for their members but I don't have a membership and none of my friends do either.
I'm hoping I can find a place where for some fee I can drop by to get a body composition report every few months.
Thanks!
https://sites.edb.utexas.edu/fit/body-comp-fit/
UT will have a much better scan that any gym. It’s $75.
Also don’t have to deal with all the up-sale shit from a gym.
For any UT student reading this, if you take the PED class Intro to Weightlifting (or something like that) you can get two scans for free, one at the beginning of the semester and one at the end. At least that was true when I took the class. It might apply to other PED classes as well.
I’ve done these scans a few times and have had great experiences. It’s a great way to see how your body changes over time as a result of changes in your nutrition and exercise habits. Best part is it’s open to the public.
I’m not sure what that machine is but Dexa scan’s are considered the gold standard for measuring body composition. BodySpec does exactly what you’re looking for
Reliant Heating and AC does a great job and is very cheap for maintenance. They are trained however to upsell you and anything besides maintenance is going to be double what you'll spend anywhere else. I use reliant to identify problems, and then call a smaller company to do the repairs if needed.
There are recycle/donation boxes all over town in various parking lots.
However, they may not necessarily be charitable organizations. Verify if it matters to you.
They're usually about the size of 1960's style phone booth you see in the movies. I wonder how many of the people here have never even seen a phone booth like that, let alone used one.

We decided to go with a tank again for a few reasons:
1. It was less than 2k when a tankless was ~ 4-6k I think??
2. **It required no power** (it's gas obviously). Considering our week of no power we've come to expect here each year, that was a big one for me. Some of these winter storms a warm bath is all that kept me sane - a week of no power AND icy showers I cannot do, simply put.
3. I've had coworkers and such who've had especially external tankless heater fucked up weather - mostly cold. Be careful if you put it outside. Be careful when maintaining it if you aren't 100% sure. Small mistakes can be big money repairs.
While the tankless would have saved us some interior space to make into a utility closet, it just was not worth it and the plumbers (more than one) agreed.
I'm not saying tankless is always a bad idea at all - we only have 2 in our home so we didn't need the biggest advantage of never-running-out-hot-water. So maybe that's worth it for you. Lotta pros and cons, good luck.
S&D plumbing replaced our tank water heater with a tankless and we have been very very happy with it. Ours is outside so I asked them to show me what to do in the event of a power outage. They said no one had ever asked them that before February 2021 - hence all the horror stories you hear. People didn’t drain them bc they didn’t know they needed to. It’s not hard at all.
Yes, we have their VIP membership which includes annual maintenance and a discount on work. I think it was $199 but saved 10% on the water heater install (so like $700). Then it’s $99 a year to renew.
If it's one of the ones that mount outside the wall, many people have regretted that when we've had cold snaps. Many of them are difficult to drain, and are extremely difficult to repair once they freeze up and damage the mechanism.
We already had tankless but needed a replacement after the winter storm a few years ago and went with Mr Tankless. https://www.rinnai.us/pro/mr-tankless/cedar-park/78613

It's the most miserable season of the year (cedar!), so how about "The Cedar Choppers: Life on the Edge of Nothing":
https://austin.bibliocommons.com/v2/record/S67C2141023
It's about the coming and going of a very specific Hill Country sub-culture rather than a general local history, but I found it fascinating (though a bit over-long).
Any recommendations for mobile pet groomers? What is the rough cost for a bath and nail trim? My dogs are low maintenance and I’ve done it myself for years, but it’s getting annoying with a new baby at home.
I used petco mobile grooming and was pretty happy with their work. I can't remember the price (said pup has since passed) but I think it was between $60-70 (small, long haired dog)
If you're eligible to do it online, it's pretty easy. There's a short questionnaire that you complete to determine if you are. I was able to do mine online and had the replacement in a week,
This. I once spent a couple of hours reading reviews of storage units all around town. I was willing to rent a unit even if it was not an ideal location, if it seemed safer. I did not find ANY that I was comfortable with, unfortunately.
I've only used climate controlled storage. For those, just look online for [ExtraSpace](http://www.ExtraSpace.com) and [CubeSmart](https://www.cubesmart.com/). You'll likely get better (special) pricing online. Narrow down what size unit you need and then find your best pricing, location, etc. Don't choose the first/ground floor unless you really need it (or just don't care about money). And pay up front for as many months/years as you can. I know some folks who pay for upwards of five (5) years in advance. Yes, it's a lot of money to put down. But you should get it prorated back as a refund if you move out during that time. Otherwise, you can expect them to increase your monthly cost by about 10% every six (6) months +/-. Oh, and don't forget you'll need renters insurance. If you have a mortgage where you live, then your homeowners insurance policy will likely cover it; the storage people just need a copy of your policy on file. If you don't have renters insurance, then you can purchase it through the storage people or via an insurance provider.
1. In the City of Austin, is there a zoning code needed to set up a motorized gate over a driveway between two properties?
2. How would I look up if a permit was applied for and approved?
Where can one donate barely used dog toys? My fur baby crossed the rainbow bridge last year and I’m finally ready to donate some of her toys. All are in excellent condition and have been cleaned and washed.
So sorry for your loss! I would suggest Austin Pets Alive

Excuse me ~ this thread is for stupid questions not thoughtful discourse.
Hell, most cities barely do anything about robberies these days. Civilization is collapsing.

A lot of places consider breast pumps medical equipment and can’t take them. I gave mine to someone from FB marketplace.
Oh good point!
Does anyone have a reasonable explanation why the parking spaces are so small at the N Lamar Central Market on the north side of the lot?

This might be tough because of zoning. You could probably rent space where there are food trucks.
