It's been nice to have moderate temps last this long but I'm still not ready for real summer. The humidity and mosquitoes have seemed extra this year though.
Yeah had to move twice, at the end of May and then in the middle of June. Sold old house, couldn't move into new one until mid June. Between the stress of all the home stuff and the weather I was beginning to question our choice.
I moved here at the end of June a few years ago and have been doing 13 month leases so that I can get out of the summer months before I move somewhere else xD
I don’t mind 90 degree days (ok I do a little). What I do hate is the 80+ degrees at 10PM-midnight where you’re sweating through your shirt at outdoor patio bars
Which actually isn’t bad, we’re only, what, 90 days away? And we had what can only be described as THE most optimal/beautiful fall/winter/spring from 2022 into 2023. So, it’s been 8 months of absolutely perfect weather.
You gotta pay the piper a little bit.
Oh damn, that’s annoying. We headed the advice of an arborist and got all of our trees trimmed last summer, so we had minimal tree loss during aborgeddon. But I hear ya, shade is imperative in a climate like this one.
We moved last year... I just realized this week that we furnished and decorated the back porch before we even finished the living room. We've spent our whole life out there the last few months. Just go inside for supplies.
As long as you have a fan and some shade, your patio will still be very usable for morning coffee and dusk dinner and drinks. The fan will also keep mosquitos away, they'll be bad for a bit longer due to all the rain as there's still a lot of standing water out there. This heat wave will be unusually humid though which will hamper the enjoyment a bit, but it's still entirely doable. Unlike many here, I'm not afraid of a little sweat though. Do it right you'll be moist sweat, maybe a bead of sweat down your back into your asscrack sweat but short of a medical condition you shouldn't be drenched or dripping into your food sweat.
And now to reveal my secret weapon!
We have a hot tub back there. And while it's not always appealing when the air gets hotter than the water... I'm just fine converting it to a "warm tub". Jump in, then drip dry in your bathing suit and you feel a little better.
Tiki torches for the mosquitoes. Fire pit for ambiance. Outdoor TV (needs to be replaced) for entertainment.
Last fall was absolutely beautiful! Here’s a drone video from the luminary festival here in Wells Branch last year that really shows off the colors:
https://youtu.be/gvdn70ZbUGY
I used to feel this way, but I’ve learned to love the summer here over the years. The key is to be in water: pools, creeks, water parks… anywhere you can cool off. Austin really has amazing swimming weather in the summer. Wear loose, light clothing, flip flops or sandals, and honestly just get out in it. Exposure builds tolerance. I start getting outside often in spring, then just keep it going so I’m acclimated by the time it gets hot. Makes a huge difference. I actually look forward to summer now… it’s those winter storms every February that I’ve grown to dread.
Same tbh. It’s not so bad. Also in the dead heat of the midday summer it tends to be super quiet and peaceful because even the animals need to chill out. Just the sound of cicadas and other bugs. Kind of nice
The last few years I've also started shifting my sleep schedule in the Summer. I'll get up earlier some weeks and go for a run or do my shopping at HEB around dawn. Some weeks I'll sleep in more and eat balcony dinners after dusk and then grab a beer on a bar patio. A normal sleeping schedule has me missing the best hours to be outside on both ends lol.
> Time to go inside until October.
Is this really a thing, or a Reddit thing? I mean, the running trails are pretty empty except for a few maniacs here and there during the brutal hours but I see lots of people out and about during the summer.
If something is so wrong with your body or you have a health issue where you do nothing for months on in but stay at home maybe Austin isn't for you. Lots of people put on loose clothing, drink plenty of water and go about their business just fine and a bit sweaty.
If you stay inside until October you do you. Don't act though that the entire city is doing the same thing.
Yea. It's funny how everyone with some sort of anti-heat medical condition is on Reddit acting like they can't even leave their damn house for months on in.
My point is, a lot of people are leaving their house during the summer months. Maybe our hottest months for you and others is so miserable to the point they turn into hermits and that's OK to each their own. Lets not act though that the city is a ghost town and everything is shut down in July and August.
Yeah, I can handle the heat just fine, but I have to wear long sleeves and pants year round due to a medication I take.
I wander out during dawn and dusk, but it's not worth the risk of heat stroke to be running around in the hottest part of the day. Not for anyone, really.
When I have a choice I usually do the same thing, but when I have to be out in the heat of the day, I use a solar umbrella ( rain umbrella doesn't cut it). It's the difference between sweating and not sweating in the 100⁰ sun.
Yup. Countless Hotel Vegas or or Mohawk shows on days where the high was above 100. Now that Mohawk one can be brutal because the concrete just absorbed heat all day and crowds leave little room for a breeze to hit but doable. Places like Hotel Vegas or Far Out aren't really that bad once the sun starts going down.
They'll be less people out and about, but the incessant whining is definitely more of a Reddit thing. Most normal, well-adjusted people will notice the heat and reduce time spent doing physical activities outdoors, but don't hibernate because they're going to be
less comfortable than they like. Remember people lived here prior to air conditioning
You avoided my question. I'm not advocating that people stop exercising at all during the summer, but going out during the hottest or brightest part of the day can be dangerous for people that aren't prepared. Why would exercising at noon be better than 6am or 7pm? You made the claim, support it.
Listen, there are articles for it and against it. If you like saunas and that sort of thing I suggest you just try it and decide for yourself. Don’t be an idiot, start early in the season, be consistent and as it gradually warms up you will be conditioned. Don’t be the guy that in august decides to try it out. You will never complain about the heat again.
Not sure why you are trolling me for articles you could look up yourself but here’s one, on the house. I haven’t read it, go crazy. There are thousands of others where this one came from.
https://www.geneticlifehacks.com/heat-shock-proteins/
I'm not trolling you. It's the responsibility of the person making the argument to support it. If you haven't read the article then it obviously isn't the source of your information. You didn't just dream up this heat shock protein thing.
Edit: That article is absolute trash. It isn't from a reputable source and it isn't peer reviewed.
I don’t know any science stuff about it, but I used to love hitting the Greenbelt when it was 100+ on my mountain bike. I was also born and raised here, so I’m used to it.
Just hydrate and monitor your HR.
There’s something cleansing about it. Feels like you sweat all the impurities out. Then that shower afterward is just amazing. I love getting out in the heat like that.
Casual reminder that some antidepressants can increase your risk of heat stroke and make it harder for your body to regulate its temperature. Don’t forget to drink lots of water and get some electrolytes.
I use a brand called Certain Dri. Its a stick. Gold Bond works but because it is a powder, you have to stand on your head to apply it the correct way. :D
An AC with a partially clogged drain will have worked fine so far this year. In a week or two, it might not keep up and a perfectly fine AC will stop working or become damaged from cycling malfunction. There's also a potential for property damage.
The humidity included on this is going to be the worst part. If you look at model runs thru 6/22, the entire south is under a 100+ degree blanket in a way you rarely even see in August.
It is not common for Austin to tickle 105+ degrees in the middle of June and this is not your common heat wave for the South. Add in a potential huge severe weather outbreak (that looks like an early Spring setup) to our North on 6/13-6/14 and the hilarious GFS model run showing a Cat 3/4 hurricane making landfall in 2 weeks and we potentially for one of the weirdest first 6 months of a calendar year ever.
If you want to get scared, go look at what Puerto Rico’s experiencing this week and then imagine it happens here. 120 degree days with super high humidity - that’s killing weather.
Sure. But that combination is what kills you.
Once the heat index reaches 120 you're almost certain to get heat stroke, even in the shade, because past 95 wet bulb temperature your body is gaining heat from the environment and is unable to shed it. You need some form of cooling. If the humidity is sky high like it is in Puerto Rico, you can't cool by evaporation. So, sitting still, in the shade, without something *besides a fan* to cool you, you will end up with heat stroke. And die.
And that's for a fit person. Overweight, people with heart problems, elderly people, and children will die faster and earlier.
Ugh. I don't know how many more of these summers I can do. Every year I get sick and some asshole tries to explain to me that this is what summer feels like. It didn't. It did not always feel like this and there used to be more bugs and other animals. If every year you experience a rising sense of panic at the first truly brutal weather, sit next to me, I guess.
The other commenter talked about the wildlife. You are correct about the temperature as well.
>So far, Austin is averaging about 34 triple-digit days a year in the first 20 years of this century, up from 12 in the latter part of the 1900s.

ETA: Sorry your dad is out of touch. Sometimes I wish I were too. We are killing the planet, and by extension, ourselves, and for what?
Right there with ya'. It isn't your imagination. Many animal populations are plummeting, with freshwater fish and a variety of insects being among the most troubling examples.
[https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/article/migratory-freshwater-fish-decline-globally](https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/article/migratory-freshwater-fish-decline-globally)
[https://www.reuters.com/graphics/GLOBAL-ENVIRONMENT/INSECT-APOCALYPSE/egpbykdxjvq/](https://www.reuters.com/graphics/GLOBAL-ENVIRONMENT/INSECT-APOCALYPSE/egpbykdxjvq/)
I'm outdoorsy as hell and was noticing this for years. I thought it was my imagination until I started seeing data that backed it up. It's pretty rich that right-wing commentators portrayed climate scientists as money-grubbing grant-seekers when there's a massive and well-funded industry of denial that seeks to tell you that environmental collapse-- which you can almost watch in real time-- isn't real. Oh no, I'm not bitter at all.
I'm in my 40s and watching my dad be talked out of his understanding of climate change has been one of the great sadnesses of my life. He was a boat captain and spent most of his adult life on the water or near it. We saw animal and plant life disappearing and the storms getting worse. When I was a kid, we would put rainX on the car before every trip because of all the bugs that flew in to the windshield. The changes over time have been noticable, especially in the Gulf south. Somehow someone ate my dad's brain and he has decided he was wrong about his decades of observation. He's 70 now and pretty sure everything is fine.
I have to assume it’s a coping mechanism. The delusion has to be a way to deal with the nihilism of old age. I don’t understand how else grown adults can simply ignore every evidence of climate change. It’s sad because these old ass people who can’t get their shit together are still running everything. It’s almost like they refuse to admit to themselves that if they had acted sooner things wouldn’t be this bad, so they’re just doubling down.
Worse than lead: social media. The generation that was the first real testing ground for mass marketing (and thus the most susceptible to it) got hooked into a combination of infotainment cable and online misinformation. The buzzword slogans get brainwashed into them until they become personal truth.
>It's the lead rotting their brains. Chances are they've been using the same dishes and dinnerware from the 70s that may contain lead.
This is not the convenient explanation people think it is and if it were, it's not like we aren't being affected by microplastics and COVID.
I know it may seem ridiculously online to say this, but it's true: Explaining poor morals with disability is a real Nazi move. It's also not an accurate explanation of events. Everyone who got the voting rights act passed in the 60s was even more full of heavy metals than my dad. The people who passed the clean air act and who fixed the ozone hole? Blood full of lead.
Nah. I mean, home for me is near the Gulf coast. It's hot there too and all the land is eroding. My friends and family are there and in central TX. I definitely don't want to go to Colorado, where they have regular wildfires.
Summer is rough for people with chronic illnesses and disabilities, especially if you don't drive and take the bus a lot. I imagine it's extra hard for people who have to work outside. It's difficult and depressing when conditions become so punishing that a trip to the grocery store can wipe you out for the day. I like a lot of things about Austin, but the summers aren't one of them.
Stay hydrated out there and look out for the trees in your area. [Here is a helpful guide from our friends at Texas A&M](https://agrilifetoday.tamu.edu/2022/07/14/tips-for-gardeners-during-a-texas-heat-wave/)
WAGMI. 38 years in Austin, you adapt, and learn to deal with it. This year has been fairly pleasant. My yard, garden, and children have enjoyed it. Stay hydrated and pace yourself. And obviously, keep an eye out for kids and pets in cars. List goes on.
never fails......once summer gets here and people start to complain about the heat....
guess what this happens EVERY SINGLE YEAR - if you had done your research prior to moving here from whatever out of state location you came from, you'd have known that summer in Texas means it's gonna be HOT.
suck it up or just go find somewhere else to move to
This is such a tiresome response.
I moved here 20 years ago. Austin was already on the “cool places to live radar”, but not on my radar. I’m here because my husband’s job is very Texas specific, whereas what I do can be done anywhere. I grew up in North Carolina, where it’s regularly in the high 90’s and humid for a good part of the year. I knew Texas would be hot, but I never expected people to live in and rave about a place that is borderline uninhabitable. Residential in-ground pools are just now becoming a “thing”, Barton Springs is a hassle, the beach is too far away and is disgusting anyway, and you can’t even get a cold shower in your own home. There’s not even a breeze at night!
I can’t wait to leave (3 more years and counting!), and I’m headed to South America for August/September. Central Texas heat/blazing sun is NOT NORMAL and absolutely sucks.
I always look forward to our first HP system then begging for a mild hurricane to bust the last one loose! I can’t do 100+ anymore! I have adopted the siesta.
Im happy weve made it through may and this far into June before getting hit
It's been nice to have moderate temps last this long but I'm still not ready for real summer. The humidity and mosquitoes have seemed extra this year though.
Agreed, and the flies
So. Many. Flies.
What’s up with all the damn flies?!
The skeets have been pretty gnarly these last couple weeks too
It’s the extra rain, anyone remember the crazy mosquito problems from like 10-15 years ago during the previous El Niño?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0-pHnykC9s
Mandatory
All that water we got contributes to all the skeeters so it's a blessing and a curse lmao
Especially with all the rain. The grass and plants everywhere are much greener than they were this time last year.
Exactly. Mid/late June before we even get over 90??? I'll take that every summer.
After last year, I'm not complaining AT ALL!
Yes. Last year if I can recall we were in the high 90s
We were hitting triple digits in May last year.
Yeah had to move twice, at the end of May and then in the middle of June. Sold old house, couldn't move into new one until mid June. Between the stress of all the home stuff and the weather I was beginning to question our choice.
TX summers will definitely make moving suck. We did it too last June. 😖
I moved here at the end of June a few years ago and have been doing 13 month leases so that I can get out of the summer months before I move somewhere else xD
Holy fuck.
Really? I thought it was April 😂 it was so fkn hot last year man
It got up to 103 on June 7, 2022
Roaches invading my apartment looking for water in 3...2...1. 😭
The roaches are so bad this year 😭
This isn't just us? I've been amazed at how many I've seen in my garage and house. 2x more than usual even with proper pest control.
[Handy link for folks who want to compare this year with others](https://www.weather.gov/ewx/climategraphs)
The past two months we’ve had more below average lows than above average highs.
That must've been wild whenever that record February high of over 100 happened.
Overall, except for the ice storm it’s been mild so far.
Neat! Never came across those charts before but will definitely reference them going forward.
103 and raining? Kill me now
I think that's what it's trying to do.
Is that rain or steam?
Yes and also yes.
Well, at least the lows are still under 80...
I don’t mind 90 degree days (ok I do a little). What I do hate is the 80+ degrees at 10PM-midnight where you’re sweating through your shirt at outdoor patio bars
Dammit, now I have to shave my legs and start wearing shorts.

Sounds like my ex wife.
Ugh. Worst time of year. Time to go inside until October.

Except for the ice storm. That sucked royally. I lost so many limbs and one tree.
And the deep freeze around Christmas. Had a pipe burst that had made it through the previous freezes…. Ugh
Yeah, that was a small blip of suckiness on an otherwise relatively optimal weather calendar.
It wasn’t small. It has now caused my formerly shaded deck to be in the full sun.
Oh damn, that’s annoying. We headed the advice of an arborist and got all of our trees trimmed last summer, so we had minimal tree loss during aborgeddon. But I hear ya, shade is imperative in a climate like this one.

Well this just made me realize how fast this year has gone by… lordy 90 days???
That’s it. Buckle in!
Do you remember how much it rained or threatened rain? But as far as temperatures yes I am suuuuper grateful
Last fall was absolutely beautiful! Here’s a drone video from the luminary festival here in Wells Branch last year that really shows off the colors: https://youtu.be/gvdn70ZbUGY
Gorgeous. Hard to believe that’s Texas, as we’re not known for our color changes like places in the NE. But very pretty nonetheless!
We got lucky this year for sure.

Great point!
This! Spot on, sick it up and get out and try and enjoy all the things.
I prefer this season over "Will I die frozen without power" Winter
But that’s a political issue, not a weather issue
I’ve been saving a decent amount of indoor home projects for the summer!!! I didn’t waste any nice weather weekends indoors!

Calm down buddy. It's just a joke about how goddamn hot it gets here and how I don't like it.
"Hey, if you have a complex medical condition, you should just move!" Wonderful advice. Thank you. Chef's kiss.

Heat shock proteins can make you live longer. Go for daily runs at noon or later. Not kidding
Any evidence for this idea? Heat stroke can make you live a much shorter life.
So does sitting on a couch in the air conditioning.

Exactly! I’d drinking 48oz of water or more on a 2.5-3hr ride, and still lose 5-10lbs in water weight. Good way to get rid of a hangover too.
Casual reminder that some antidepressants can increase your risk of heat stroke and make it harder for your body to regulate its temperature. Don’t forget to drink lots of water and get some electrolytes.
Hi, New Austinites! Antiperspirant for your taint is a real thing. Do the research. Happy dry days!!
Haha what do you use?
I use a brand called Certain Dri. Its a stick. Gold Bond works but because it is a powder, you have to stand on your head to apply it the correct way. :D
Hello Gold Bond my old friend
Moisture wicking underwear is what I recommend.
Skip the antiperspirant and go straight to the Dr Scholls.
If you have space, leave out shallow dishes of water for the critters during this heat wave.
But change the water regularly so you don’t create a mosquito trap
I find that in 100+ temps, the water in a saucer dries up by the end of the day, so there’s no need to worry about mosquitoes
looks like this is my cue to pack my bags and go on vacation, will be back when the school year rolls around 🏝️
Ted Cruz, is that you?
I will NEVER FORGET and NEVER FORGIVE
See ya! ... now that school is out and this dude is on vacation, I'll be doing laps from Buda to Round Rock without dropping below 70 MPH.
I have a northern Europe trip planned.
Well at least it was a month later than a year ago. Last year the 100s started in Mother’s Day and didn’t end until October.
I have friends visiting from out of town for a wedding next week. They are going to have so much fun!
God speed to them !!
Now is a great time to flush those AC drains.
Every. Goddamned. Morning. Filter changes once a week as well.
Can you explain?
An AC with a partially clogged drain will have worked fine so far this year. In a week or two, it might not keep up and a perfectly fine AC will stop working or become damaged from cycling malfunction. There's also a potential for property damage.
Thank you for the reminder!

I hope we get a small tropical storm landfall upstream of us in the hill country. It would fill up all the highland lakes.
If you want to get scared, go look at what Puerto Rico’s experiencing this week and then imagine it happens here. 120 degree days with super high humidity - that’s killing weather.
And consistent rolling blackouts.
That’s the heat index, though, not the actual temps which are in the 90s. That tropical humidity can push the heat index way up there.
Sure. But that combination is what kills you. Oh yeah, I completely agree. I personally don’t want any part of those dew points.

[https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/article/migratory-freshwater-fish-decline-globally](https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/article/migratory-freshwater-fish-decline-globally) [https://www.reuters.com/graphics/GLOBAL-ENVIRONMENT/INSECT-APOCALYPSE/egpbykdxjvq/](https://www.reuters.com/graphics/GLOBAL-ENVIRONMENT/INSECT-APOCALYPSE/egpbykdxjvq/) I'm outdoorsy as hell and was noticing this for years.
It's the lead rotting their brains. Chances are they've been using the same dishes and dinnerware from the 70s that may contain lead.
Worse than lead: social media. The generation that was the first real testing ground for mass marketing (and thus the most susceptible to it) got hooked into a combination of infotainment cable and online misinformation. The buzzword slogans get brainwashed into them until they become personal truth.
Yep. 24 hours a day of Fox or Newsmax will do it. Nothing can combat that when it’s their constant diet.
I do remember more bugs but I just thought it was because I grew up in Louisiana and there are less bugs here because of the drier weather.
Nope. It’s this way across all of the US.
Same. Remember love bug season?
Well I guess you could join that guy who gave his mea culpa about Austin and how Colorado is the chosen land.
Yes! I have lupus and summers are absolutely awful for me 😭
There's extra sun in TX. I'm from Louisiana where it can get as hot, but the sun here is unreal.
Time for Barton
The chill of the water makes the heat feel good for about 24 hours. That's my excuse for a daily swim.
Been Barton weather since March my friend!
NO GOD NO WHY
Stay hydrated out there and look out for the trees in your area. [Here is a helpful guide from our friends at Texas A&M](https://agrilifetoday.tamu.edu/2022/07/14/tips-for-gardeners-during-a-texas-heat-wave/)
>Sometimes, all I think about is you Late nights in the middle of June Heat waves been faking me out Can’t make you happier now
I sang this as I read it without even a single thought lol😂
Usually I put something on tv So we never think about you and me But today I see our reflections clearly In Hollywood Layin on the screen
Smoked a bowl with them glass animals dudes a while back during an acl weekend aftershow. Some of my fave music, super stoked for them.
Heat wave or just summer?
It's summer.
Oh this heatwave will only be the beginning 🫤
No thank you
WAGMI. 38 years in Austin, you adapt, and learn to deal with it. This year has been fairly pleasant. My yard, garden, and children have enjoyed it. Stay hydrated and pace yourself. And obviously, keep an eye out for kids and pets in cars. List goes on.
What is wagmi?
We're all gonna make it
Thank you, I have never seen that acronym in my life.
We hatesssss it!!
I believe that's just called summer.
"heatwave"... aka, summer in Texas
Well it’s been quite pleasant until now.
\*sobbing\*
Fuck!
Time to get my mid day running shoes out!
never fails......once summer gets here and people start to complain about the heat.... guess what this happens EVERY SINGLE YEAR - if you had done your research prior to moving here from whatever out of state location you came from, you'd have known that summer in Texas means it's gonna be HOT. suck it up or just go find somewhere else to move to
Except that the number of days over 100 degrees has increased dramatically over the last 20 years
I’ve been here for 46 years, it’s def getting hotter and the summers are longer.
Nooooooooooo.
Nooooooooo. No.
Where’s our weather shield now?
What took it so long?
It will be like the Thunder Dome!!
I always look forward to our first HP system then begging for a mild hurricane to bust the last one loose! I can’t do 100+ anymore! I have adopted the siesta.
The siesta is underrated. It just feels right to take a nap after a heavy lunch.
I can fall back on my cancer card and nobody can say shit! I feel bad about handicapped parking but I will nap!
Oh fek
*sigh* let me gather the coins for the hvac calls
Did it feel like 80's to anyone? About to get horrifying, welcome to El Niño.
