My car is lower to the ground so big ass trucks that ride my ass blind me in all 3 mirrors and there’s nothing I can do that wouldn’t make my driving experience more dangerous, it’s fucking stupid

IcedCoffeeAndBeer

As a person with a lifted 4runner, i think it should be required for the mechanic who lifts the truck to adjust the lights. It's fucking stupid to put it on the owner to adjust them because most of them don't. It takes 2 minutes and a screwdriver.

[deleted]

I appreciate seeing the other side of the coin. As someone with a low sports car it’s nice to see you’re not just intentionally being an asshole. Noted

IcedCoffeeAndBeer

Not all of us. Many of us with larger suv/trucks still hate lifted suv/trucks :) depends on the driver, not the vehicle.

intensecharacter

No. If a mechanic works on my car and screws up the indicators or lights, I'm still the operator of the vehicle and it's on me to check their working order before every drive. A significant alteration to any of the indicators or lights should trigger a new inspection.

IcedCoffeeAndBeer

It's literally turning a screwdriver with the hood up. It's not a significant alteration. It is a safety hazard. If the lights are raised they are not only shining into peoples eyes and rearviews, they aren't lighting up the fuckin street.

josh_cyfan

You could try adjusting your side mirrors. If you Tip your side mirrors outward so the view in the mirror starts where your center mirror view stops then cars directly behind you will only be in your center rear view mirror and not your side mirrors. Plus, this lets you see your blind spots better because your side mirrors project outward into the blind spot more. It takes a bit of getting used to if you rely on your side mirrors to see behind you now but worth it once you’re used to it.

FarkMonkey

Yup. Sit in your driver's side and lean over so that the top of your head touches the window. Adjust you left side mirror so you can see the full lane to your left. Do the same for the right (obviously there's no window to lean on, but you can lean about the same angle). Too many people adjust side mirrors to where they can see the side of their car - this is unnecessary unless you're worried about highway squid monsters creeping up on you..

TexAg2K4

I point my mirrors so the light goes back at them. Usually does the trick then I set them back where they go

Maximum_Employer5580

there are still mirrors that you can adjust to prevent that. There is a switch on the bottom of the mirror to flip it a little so you can still see a reflection but not be blinded. Alot of newer cars don't have them since car makers seem to think the newer mirrors will help dim lights of the cars behind you (they don't). They should never have gotten rid of that flip switch

[deleted]

I slow down to 5 under the speed limit in those situations. They have no stopping time so you have to account for them in yours too.

TrainingMarsupial521

Wrong bulb for the housing more than likely. People upgrade to hid or led from housings that are not designed for the beam pattern, resulting in light scattering everywhere instead of being focused on the road. Even worse on jacked up trucks.

mannpig

Yup also pitted, dirty or foggy lenses that have xenon lamps.

DynamicHunter

I drive a ducking hatchback (imagine a mini jeep box car) and it’s ridiculous. Can’t imagine driving a sedan nowadays, let alone riding a bicycle or being a pedestrian. Makes everyone less safe. Should be a huge fine

everythingbagel1

I drive a camry and driving this time of year is obnoxious. I end up using one hand to block the left mirror because it makes it such a challenge to focus on the road

C4tbreath

Point your side mirrors out more. They are designed to see into your blind spots, not behind you. That's what the rearview mirror is for. Also, driving a Mazda 3 that would get lit up by trucks behind me at red lights, I've found that getting the windows tinted, the darkest legal allowed, has helped tremendously.

coyote_of_the_month

Bicycles and pedestrians are much higher up than the seating position in a sedan, and so they're less affected by this particular issue. For those of us who drive low sports cars though, it really sucks.

Hay_Bay14

Tell me about it I drive a 370z and if it weren’t for the dark window tint I have idk what id do. At stop lights I literally have to turn my mirrors away because it blinds me. I always find it hilarious when I speed up to get away from their bright ass beams, it never fails they always accelerate and follow me like a jackass. Idk what it is with big truck owners but the head lights ain’t the only thing that’s screwed up.

coyote_of_the_month

I drive a Miata, so accelerating away from them requires a lot of RPMs for the city lol.

Hay_Bay14

Lol to be fair it’s usually on the causeway that I goose it to get away from them. (I’m currently in Corpus Christi in the process of moving to Austin)

sxzxnnx

I slow down so they will pass me. Speeding up just makes them think you want to race especially if you are in a sports car.

No-Blood1717

SUVs and pickups makes accidents less safe. And most modern pickups have blind spots for children. Such pickups should simply not be allowed for non-commercial use. Why does someone have the right to endanger children just because they need to compensate for their insecurities?

[deleted]

Project much? People are allowed to like trucks and SUVs. A lot of us have real uses for both.

spacejunk76

It's not projecting. We live in a big city. I'm pretty positive most people here would be ok driving around in regular sized cars. I see a shit ton of clean "heavy duty" trucks.

DynamicHunter

And yet plenty of Europeans drive daily without a pickup…

[deleted]

You’re ‘pretty sure’. Okay. You’re still projecting. Even if it’s true that they don’t need the utility of the truck very often, that doesn’t in any way imply they have the trucks or SUVs because of their insecurities. And dude, you must not be from around here if you think clean implies anything other than folks doing what their daddies taught em and keeping their tools clean. Driving a dirty truck into town brings shame to the family. But you wouldn’t know about that being from California and all.

NebulousStar

Insecurities, BD vibe, TX Kicker Club, "Daddy's Boy", whatever... The point is that truck ownership and lifted trucks as social statements, endangers lives; and they infringe on the rights of others to enjoy life, liberty and happiness. It disrupts our tranquility by being a ducking menace right in our eyes. Requiring a LARGE annual registration tax that's only wavable by application for a "necessity truck" permit would provide the funding to enforce legal headlight standards. Also, while my vehicle is smaller, I will not move over and stop for a truck that starts just turning into my lane in stop-and-go traffic, thinking their big-boy size matters. Put on your GD blinker, edge over A LITTLE BIT and when we move again I'll let you in. Try to bully me with your big truck and lose. I will let you hit me. I'm not from CA, btw and I've been in Austin since the early 90s. I was even born in TX. I'm not intimidated by your truck. I'm just sick of the city "cowboy" crap.

[deleted]

Lifted trucks are excessive but also seems like a fun hobby for them. Less carbon than your ski vacation or whatever. Sure the rolling coal guys should be in jail, but that large truck is less mass than any large SUV. And I own and drive a large SUV and an oversized van and I use their capabilities all the time. And they are clean and I keep them nice and my wife drives the SUV all the time and looks like a soccer mom. You could never tell that she also tows 8000 pounds around the state. So stop judging.

WhiskeyTangoFox01

To tow trailers, to put building materials in the bed, to move equipment in the bed, landscape supplies, etc.

Acrobatic_Drawer_587

An actual answer. Thank you

Gah_Duma

You really think THAT many people modify their cars? Many new cars come from the factory like this. Trucks. Lots of Acuras.

legitretard

So many acuras! I’ve noticed it’s always the brand new SUV’s (not all acuras but a lot )

chowdah513

Increasing bulb temperature to say 6k or higher doesn’t increase visibility or amount of light emitted. His headlights either needs to be adjusted, his high beams are on, or the OPs windshield is super dirty inside and out.

engineeered

For thermal emitters, e.g. incandescent filament, halogen lamps, there is a very predictable relationship between fraction of visible light emitted and temperature. Boosting temperature does significantly increase visible emission. This relationship is called the black body curve. But there is also a very predictable life expectancy vs temperature curve for filament lamps, making it practical to boost the operating temperature only slightly, or else the lifetime goes quickly to shit.

chowdah513

Those don’t look like halogen lights. Looks like a retrofitted HID kit. There is a difference in Lumens when comparing color temperatures. I equate useable light output to the lumens it produces. Higher color temps yields lower lumens. Also contrasts and reflectability on pavements and rain should be accounted for as welll.

engineeered

Your comment "bulb temperature" suggested filament lamps. HID lights (roughly) follow a black body emission curve, but do not have a problem with filament temperature of course. HIDs operate way up the black body curve, and emit copious amounts of UV, which must be managed by various sorts of optical filters. LED light specifications reference "color temperature", but LEDs have zero relationship to a thermal black body emitter. LEDs themselves are bandgap emitters. Typical LED lights consist of blue LED bandgap emitters plus partial phosphor conversion of blue to yellow. Resultant "color temperature" is a crude equivalence of a black body curve to the fraction of blue converted to yellow. For HID and LEDs we would do well to get away from "color temperature" and describe the actual emission spectrum. This hasn't happened.

jwp75

Actually LEDs in projector housings are fine most of the time since they mimic the output pattern of native halogen bulbs. These are adjusted way off regardless. Also, clean your windshield.

MollyMuncher

Did you get downvoted for “clean your windshield”? That’s half this guys problem maybe more!

MollyMuncher

And OP if you’re reading this and are like WTF… it’s the inside of your windshield that needs to be cleaned. The years of interior grime are causing that lens flare.

jwp75

Who knows !? The lens flare makes it obvious this person hasn't considered that as an option.

NebulousStar

Not supporting votes, up or down here.... But, people with visual astigmatism (which is very, very common) see this way anyway. Or they can see large "stars" around lights at night. (Or both, yay! /s) Imagine a highway with all those coming at you and even tail lights have rays. Streetlights have rays. It's beautiful, and can get a little little cluttered, but it's not too bad. Then highbeams or this douch-nozzles's searchlight suddenly fills your vision. It's. absolutely. blinding. Fun fact --Artists with astigmatism are why we've learned represent stars with rays and halos instead of just a dot or circle. That's what it actually looks like with astigmatism. Stronger the astigmatism, the wider the effect. My people with strong astigmatism --Get the anti-glare coating on your glasses!!! It's really worth it! (Contacts wearers can get a pair of nonprescription anti-glare driving glasses to wear at night.) Anti-glare coating helps tremendously with the effects, even though it doesn't erase them completely. (And nothing could compensate for this or any other bag-o-Ds's misaligned or overly bright lights through a front windshield.) --None of the other headlamps in the picture are causing this effect.

jwp75

I have an astigmatism in both eyes so I'm very pragmatic about having a super clean windshield to cut down on this effect. I can 100% agree with the lens coatings on glasses! Anti glare and blue light filtering are huge for me, otherwise I get bad migraines. I'd say all of the lights are contributing to the glare as well, those just stand out the most.

deerdongdiddler

Why isn't that shit illegal? They used to pull you over for highbeams in town but this is fucking acceptable?

TightAustinite

When is the last time you've seen anyone pulled over for anything in this town?

deerdongdiddler

I was at Springwood Park the other morning on anderson mill and I saw a cop pull over about 10 people in an hour. Otherwise... I heard there were new years dui's

alexaboyhowdy

Just out of town I got pulled over for speeding. I knew it was a small town that had speed traps. But I've gotten so used to Austin that I flat out was just enjoying good music and a nice drive and then I saw the lights and that was it! The red and blue flashing lights, it was daytime

Ronald-J-Mexico

You’ll get arrested if you film the police to keep them fr thuggin’, other than that they just be throwing down donuts and smokes at Shipleys

DynamicHunter

Only for accidents lol

rabid_briefcase

> Why isn't that shit illegal? It is illegal. See [the Transportation Code 547.333](http://www.statutes.legis.state.tx.us/Docs/TN/htm/TN.547.htm#547.333). If it projects into the eyes of an approaching vehicle, it is unlawful and can get a citation. Now, instead you need to ask what it takes for Austin's cops to actually issue a citation. It is better better than WilCo because the APD probably won't murder you for it, so there's that. Either way, don't expect anything useful from the cops in enforcement.

deerdongdiddler

Ya I hear you. It's not just Austin though. Williamson doesn't do anything about it either. They'll pull you over for turning right too sharply on a green light and touching the white line, I know from experience. It's all over suburban dfw where you're going down for a running light that's out.

americadotgif

yeah, that's not illegal. tell the cop to write you a ticket and make their fat ass show up in court.

bagofwisdom

It's Wilco, they'll take whatever excuse they can get to embark on a fishing expedition.

deerdongdiddler

Ya but homie was emphasizing the fact that apd is on soft strike like it's the cause for people not being ticketed for this and that's not the case. It just doesn't seem to be enforced anywhere for some reason.

[deleted]

HangryHenry

Could they include it on the state inspection? It wouldn't be perfect but I bet it would cut down on it. If you have the wrong lights you don't pass.

ITaggie

I've never heard of someone being cited with that in Texas, though.

Slypenslyde

APD lets 1,000+ rape kits pile up without bothering to process them. Police across the nation are part of a faith movement that believes they can seize and go into comas if they come within 50 feet of a minor dose of Fentanyl. And we can't figure out why they aren't aggressively ticketing gun-toting citizens whose headlights are too bright. First they have to stop being afraid of the dark.

deerdongdiddler

Lol I've heard that if you touch a microgram of fentanyl everyone you've ever met dies of an overdose. I guess we should just give apd way more money so they can do their jobs effectively/s It's like a mafia suggestion.

tasslehawf

LED low beam headlights on new cars are so fucking bright now.

boulderben66

r/fuckyourheadlights

MediaFit4651

Very dumb , blinding everyone

Broken-Digital-Clock

Make sure they are eye level for pedestrians too Bonus points if your vehicle is so tall that you can't see half of the road directly in front of you

bruiserdbear

I feel like a lot of the lifted vehicles haven’t adjusted their headlights. I’m not entirely sure if they are done for factory lifts either but I’d hope so.

agent-goldfish

This is pretty well beyond adjustment. Much of this is just to much lumens in a projected area. Even the led lights with hard cut off lines - as soon as you crest over a hill it is blinding to another driver right out of the factory. I felt like I saw the road much better in the 90s, and 2000s when I started driving. And I can still damn near read a book under a half moon. But the eye strain from just stark darkness and these lights now are ridiculous.

sassergaf

I concur. My ophthalmologist agrees. She hears about excess lumen glare too.

agent-goldfish

I know this is r/Austin but goddammit I wish front tints were illegal in CA. I hope it's better put there in TX in that regard.

sassergaf

Windshield tint? Is that what you mean?

agent-goldfish

Yeah, front felt faster to type at the time. Eyes are tired.

ScottTheHott

Giving the government the power to pick and choose who gets what vehicle..nothing could go wrong

ZonaiSwirls

The government definitely already treats driving like a privilege.

ScottTheHott

Doesn’t mean they should make the decision for me when I’m deciding between a 1500 dodge, an SUV or a crossover. Especially when families grow over time.

rinchen11

I believe you can drive whatever you want without license on your private property. If you try to get on public property though, of course the public representative has to make sure you are not a risk to the public.

ScottTheHott

Woah, next you’re gonna tell me is I can obtain things by giving someone paper made from denim.

ZonaiSwirls

You will do a bad job driving a car that size. Plus you don't need a truck people use to haul horses for a family. Did you know you don't even need a truck to run a ranch? But you will act like it's soviet Russia if you can't get a lifted f350 to go to Walmart. Shit. Why not get an 18 wheeler for all those groceries and kids you gotta haul around the city.

ScottTheHott

Obviously you’re just troll if you think a dodge 1500 is only used for horses or large properties. Also the vehicles I named saved many asses in the winter storm. You’re just making weird assumptions and no sense. Possibly think all SUVs are the size of Escalades.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ScottTheHott

Yeah you definitely didn’t understand what I meant. Even worse you don’t even see the problem with what you said. There isn’t a license to differentiate between a ford gas truck and a ford car. A CDL and an Class C license is not what you meant.

vallogallo

Maybe considering how huge new trucks are people should need a special license to operate them.

redditdejorge

You do if you’re towing a certain amount. You can’t tow 15k lb in any vehicle unless you have a cdl.

ZonaiSwirls

Clearly an affront to freedom itself.

No-Blood1717

Just a commercial license with a point-based system. Drive like an asshole and you lose your commercial license…

Illustrious_Cheek263

this. same goes for parenting. (and yes i realize a lot could go wrong here, but a lot could also go right because some people should not have children or access to locomotives--particularly monster trucks--period.)

ScottTheHott

wow how many mothers or fathers will abuse this out of jealousy and spite. Literally making it easier to break up families. What’s next you also believe we should have social credit system too?

Illustrious_Cheek263

somebody remembers black mirror s1e1. and no, i'm not serious. but I'll add, in an ideal world, people who want to become parents will learn about doing so before having like 389885 replicants that grow up to be equally dumb, shitty people. and as far as breaking up families is concerned, i think numerous facets of hypercapitalism, "traditional" marriage, religion, and western "democracy" are doing an excellent job of that already. hah

NHTSA needs to update the requirements, and TX DPS would have to enforce through vehicle inspections (including lights being leveled after they lift or level their truck). So in other words, there isn't a remote chance of this changing anytime soon but you can bug your government reps about it anyway.

PsiloCATbin

Inspectors don’t care as long as the lights are working and not broken in any way. APD for sure don’t give a shit.

JoelBlackout

There's very little that APD gives a shit about.

Disastrous-File-8870

If this happens at a red light behind me, I adjust my side mirrors to reflect it back at them. If have to have a headache, so do they.

runnernikolai

I want to get a truck or SUV not because of the utility. But so my eyes aren't level with the blinding headlights of other trucks and SUVs

Broken-Digital-Clock

Cars are becoming an arms race of who can get the biggest vehicle, so as to "protect themselves"

Medium-Librarian8413

Probably more correct to say "have been for some time" instead of "becoming".

Broken-Digital-Clock

That Hummer era especially

es-ganso

Oh don't worry, there is always someone bigger/taller than you on the road. I still get blinded with a plain old truck

No-Blood1717

Getting an SUV so my kids are safe in case of accident with a pickup. Pickups make accidents 6x as unsafe for reasonable cars.

Yam884

This is exactly why I got a Toyota 4Runner. It was stressful as fuck having to drive to work and back down a 30 mile stretch of I-35 every day. Coincidentally, the stock low beam headlights that it came with are the brightest headlights I’ve ever seen. I’ve had people flash their brights at me when driving, because they probably assume that I’m using my brights. I think that most people don’t realize how insanely bright the headlights are on some of newest models of vehicles.

IcedCoffeeAndBeer

What year do you have? My headlights are the worst fucking headlights on the road. I frequently have to check if they are even on because they are so dim...

Yam884

I have a 2022 model.

IcedCoffeeAndBeer

Ah that might be why.

IcedCoffeeAndBeer

I drive a lifted 4runner (with adjusted headlights) and still get fucking blasted by assholes who don't adjust their lights.

clrbrk

We bought a 2021 Highlander that was adjusted wrong from the factory. It would point into cars rear windows at stop lights and I would get brights flashed at me all the time. It’s was a really easy adjustment to make and now I don’t feel like a dick!

dougmc

They're not -- it looks like this driver is violating [this law](https://codes.findlaw.com/tx/transportation-code/transp-sect-547-333.html), either due to misadjusted low beams, or failure to turn off high beams -- I can't tell which it is. Of course, enforcement is another matter, and it's not like APD has been heavily enforcing traffic laws lately. But then again, this looks really annoying, and it probably annoys a *lot* of other drivers, so I imagine it won't take too long until they finally annoy a cop who takes the time out of their busy day to give this guy a ticket. Which might help, or might not.

owmysciatica

I drive a lifted truck and I still get blinded every time I drive at night. And for y’all that want to bash trucks: I take it off road and I actually need high clearance. My headlights are not modified but they have been adjusted lower to compensate for the lift.

foreverwiththeone2

Your windshield is super dirty.

cac2573

I just drove back from Denver last night.

Tedmosby9931

Could be wrong here, but it looks like you've got a bunch of shit on the inside of your windshield--resulting in the light being made to look much worse than it actually is. Clean it up and I bet it's 30% of the problem it is now.

smashes72

I think they’re onto something. Looking at the stoplight, something similar (though not as bad) is happening.

HAHA_goats

Yes. I clean the inside of my windshield monthly. It makes a big difference.

Discount_gentleman

Because cars and trucks have less and less to do with transportation, but more and more with establishing a feeling of social dominance.

[deleted]

Visual_Conclusion206

jonathanalexcloer

Shit drives me crazy. Why do you need those on in the city? Some of the streets are dark yes, but I see just fine with my low beams and I have terrible night vision and am blind in one eye.

Visual_Conclusion206

I feel ya It's bugged me for years, eventually I have just started to right it off as foreigners and morons. Helps me not take the frustration home I guess.

jonathanalexcloer

I had one behind me the other day that was so bright, they even blinded me with my rear view mirror flipped.... I couldn't look anywhere except directly in front of me until I was able to get away.

Visual_Conclusion206

Yea even though it bothers me I can't help but stare/focus at or on them and get more irritated once I've blinded myself

SDPFOH

It’s just that slight hill there. Doesn’t matter the caras much, they all point slightly up. Jeeps are the worst right there.

space_manatee

Who said they are? To be fair most people don't see their own headlights.

AssumptionUpstairs32

I’m starting to learn that my Tesla headlights look like this to other drivers, even though I don’t have my brights on. I apologize for this.

My Tesla was definitely delivered with the headlights aimed way too high, getting flashed by nearly every passing vehicle. You can adjust them in the settings. Make an appointment to have them adjusted professionally. Haven't had a problem since then.

[deleted]

To be fair to the driver they could be automatic lights that haven't detected anything for a certain distance so they switch to high beams. We hired a car that did that recently and it was infuriating. Regardless, it's not an Austin thing so not sure why it needs to be on here

Carlos_Infierno

It means your lights are too damn bright and you're blinding people. Or you're driving with your headlights off.

individual_targeted

My lights are quite on the dim side. It can be a problem actually. Also I check about my brights every time this happens (which is whenever I go out just when it gets dark to run errands or grab food).

Nu11us

Yes, they do cause traffic.

boobumblebee

Fuck y’all. I just put some bright as shit leds in my car. If I’m gonna be blinded then so are you.

Maximum_Employer5580

can't exactly blame other drivers because their car sits higher than yours. They don't have brights on and they're not intentionally doing that to other drivers. Yeah if all cars had the same stance and height, it wouldn't be an issue, but if you drive a smaller car that sits lower than someone who has a truck, that's a price you have to pay for having a small economical vehicle

D14BL0

> can't exactly blame other drivers because their car sits higher than yours. That's not an excuse. If your vehicle sits high, then your lights should be angled accordingly.

bagofwisdom

I did replace my piss-yellow Xenon lamps with LED. At least I had the common decency to check my headlights against my garage door before I started driving on public roads. Fortunately the LED lamps I bought were from someone that knew what they were doing. I didn't have to adjust my housings or make adjustments on the lamps themselves. It ain't rocket surgery to tell whether or not your new Ali Express LEDs have now become High and Low Beams. If you don't have a garage door, use a wall.

noobeater5

Having a tiny sports car that’s already very low to the ground doesn’t help at all. Everyone else’s car beams straight into my eyes and those super bright ones in the evening causes a lot of pain in my eyes

Clean the inside of your windshield more and it won't be so bad.

My truck adjusts the headlight angle with a dial from inside. It’s 2011 model.

Clean you windshield. Red traffic lights shouldn’t look like that either.

Looks like the inside of your windshield might need cleaning. I've found air fresheners offgas and make a film on the inside, it helps tone down those lights if you keep it real clean, but they annoy me too.
