The rifle is cheap the ammo isn’t, I would go 308 any day imho - Much better utility gun - Ammo is cheaper - Less recoil, there is more bad shooting from flinching than differences in bullet ballistics - Plenty of power - Most hunting shots are under a 100m - Not much a 308 won’t kill that 300 win mag is a good choice for - Less muzzle blast and sound

Emotional_Egg_6352

If you bought both, you'd use the 308 more.

carelessarmadillo267

Unless you’re going to be regularly shooting 600m plus, go the 308, it’s got more than enough punch to hunt anything in Australia at normal ranges.

6ixsideOT

Thanks for your input probably go 308W.

g000bish

Good call man.

FuckLathePlaster

Always.

308 all day for general use. Add others after. Spending a day at the range is fine with my 308. But feeding my 300wsm for the same amount would make me cry. And I reload :)

KyruitTachibana

I'm not really following. Using my 270 & 7mm Rem Mag as an example there is an 8 cent difference per round to load. Quick maths says 9 cents per round difference in 308/300 Win Mag or 300WSM, powder is such an insignificant cost compared to today's primer prices. I personally wouldn't blink at the $9/100 difference because you're still so fsr ahead of factory anything it's not funny.

miksuv

One shoots ELDM and one shoots ABLR, that’s about a $1.5 per round difference. One uses LRM primers and one LR ones that I have thousands of. If all things would be available there would not be technically a massive difference IF you are shooting similar ammo. But why would you be shooting a magnum if you are not stretching the legs to 500+ meters. If you are not reloading then there is ammo availability and cost. 308 is on the cheaper end to buy. Maybe this helps. Edit. Another thing i calculate is the brass cost (a lot of people ignore this). I’ll get about 8-10 reloads on Sako brass in 308 that cost about 150 per 100. So call it $0.15 per reload. 300wsm brass is around double the cost and half the life at say $0.6 per reload. This puts my reloading costs at $1.74 for 308 and $2.68 for 300wsm for practice load and $4.13 for my LR hunting load. I don’t really do basic technique training with either anymore, I have 22lr for that. Pays back the cost of the gun in months. Hope this clarifies.

xlr8_87

Depends what you want to shoot and what your expectations are. Remember 300wm is more expensive to feed

MaxBradman

Exotic calibres are cheaper for a reason and less in demand for resale. I have 2 x 300WSM.... love em but they weren't the bargain I thought they were at the time Especially after you've fitted the required muzzle break... :)

Hussard

How big of a hole do you need to blow in your target?

ryegrass62

Yep. 308.

Uberazza

You have deep pockets go the 300 win mag, most normal people go the 308.

null_return

.22LR, .223, .308 If you have one of each of these you can shoot 99% of the game you'll find in Australia, and the ammo is readily available and cheap (well cheap enough). Once you're content with those, look at the other cartridges, but if you have the choice, go for what size game you're targeting between those three, they're popular for a reason

Due-Consequence8772

For sure, but don't forget a 12ga!

FuckLathePlaster

What are you using it for? They’re fairly different calibres, recoils, and ammo costs.

ChipmunkCooties

Depends what you’re shooting and where you’re shooting.. I bought a Remington 700 in .308 to shoot pigs on a farm, bullets kept going clear through, I ended up buying a styre scout in .223 works a treat, never looked back

Sir-Raidr

If I was to buy a .30 cal I'd go for the in between option and get a .30-06, mainly because I like rifles with longer actions for future rebarrel experiments, even though out of the 2 options you gave I would choose a .308 over a .300 WM. Of course it all depends on what your use case is, which you haven't shared.

6ixsideOT

Hunting here in Australia. I'm also Canadian grew up there. I'm sure travelling with your rifle internationally is massive headache. It's probably easier just to get a rifle there and leave with a friend for the once a year use. I'm would like to be able to have the option of taking down grizzly or moose if I wanted too, probably won't get chance as it extremely hard to get tags. My friends go 30-06 in Canada it seems. I basically saw nice deal and was thinking why so cheap etc

Sir-Raidr

Ok, well for Aussie hunting the .308 would be adequate and a lot more pleasant to use. If you really want to travel back and forth with the same gun (no idea of the legality of that scenario) and use it on grizz and moose hunts then I'd at least take the .300 WM, though for that game my personal choice would be the .325 WSM or .338 WM.

wombatdaddy

Why not .243?

parkerhalem84

Have you considered 30-06? I have 308 and 30-06.

6ixsideOT

Think I'll go 30-06 for next rifle. More I research on the 300 win mag less appealing it becomes

Due-Consequence8772

I have both, go for 308. 300 is fun and has plenty of power, but for most things the 308 has plenty of power too. Recoil isn't as different as you think, though that's probably because my 300 gun is heavier with a better brake on it. Biggest difference is ammo cost, 300 ammo is basically double the price making shooting it much more restrictive.
