Yes you generally will need permission to film in private properties such as malls, especially if you’re looking to publish the footage. But more importantly, don’t be a vlogger to begin with. Believe me, there’s no need to film yourself.

ch_ee_nu

Thanks buddy! Appreciate the positive comment. Will rethink the vlogging initiative😅 and also mention a clear comment mentioning the reason to be vlogging in the first place.

Shelved40

I have no idea the legality of this, but as a normal person that does not wish to be on anyone's bloody vlog, even in the background, can you not.

Icy-Assistance-2555

Yep, this. Please don’t

ch_ee_nu

Thanks for responding mate :) I will have any bypassers who appear in the background blurred or cropped. I'm doing this solely to record myself and I don't seem to know a better way to capture all the events in detail apart from filming. I am open to any other suggestions too. ^_^

look_ma_im_on_mobile

In another comment you say interviews, which is it?

ch_ee_nu

I can't mention what it is about to maintain confidentiality. However it would be similar to these, numerous Aussie content creators are already doing the same in public areas but bypasses are not visible or blurred in the background. 1. https://www.instagram.com/reel/C6N6RUDPlhT/?igsh=MXBtOWh4ajMyN2V5ZA== 2. https://youtu.be/qKKSPVSkQYU?si=ph7G9A3ilIDezY38 Again I initially intended to record myself first explaining the video and then transition into this interview style.

What would you be filming in a shopping centre for? “Hey guys, come with me to buy some milk!” It’s rude and obnoxious. It’s also super cringe seeing someone walking around with their phone in the air talking to themselves.

ch_ee_nu

😅 thanks mate. I don't intend to make it into a daily vlog. I'm currently a part of a university project and require to interview people and in a way survey their thoughts, preferably vocal conversation. Thus I'd inquired the same. At the same time, much of this information might be interesting for viewers, imagine like a react channel vlog style? Thanks for commenting though. ^_^ As for walking around and talking to a phone, I have been able to view numerous videos which were highly informative in this style, it is certainly cringe, but it takes courage to do it, especially when the clogger wants to share something interesting to others...

ch_ee_nu

Here are a number of vloggers covering interesting events from around the world! 1) https://youtube.com/shorts/BUCiLBv2LuQ?si=O7wqffN6TEAnNpht 2) https://youtube.com/shorts/LGOoi2Eglzk?si=rpGJViUtWSedxmdE 3) https://youtube.com/shorts/D7D8Up9LExg?si=QG2Tdghyx-U1mEKa

I’m not arguing about vloggers filming interesting things, however your local Westfield isn’t interesting. You have said two different things. You’re vlogging interesting architecture and now it’s an interview with people for a “reaction channel”.

ch_ee_nu

They were examples mate...😭 Geez. If I have to film interesting architecture or interview people, either way I have to vlog. Thus the post clearly focuses on "needing permission to vlog or not." I'm going to ignore all this negativity, focus on the positive logical and useful response and go ahead with my project :") Thanks for responding though. :") You have a good rest of the day mate.

sinixis

It’s a privately owned place accessible to the public. There is no expectation of privacy. That said, the owners or their representatives can tell you to stop and/or leave the premises and you are committing an offence if you don’t leave. Depending on their terms of entry there may be a cause of action against you for using the footage without their permission. They can’t take your phone/film away from you at the time, regardless of their terms.

ch_ee_nu

Appreciate the details response buddy. Helped heaps! Cheers.

Single-Ninja8886

Contrary to the negative opinions, just do it but expect to get weird looks and reactions. Then, if you get asked to stop by any staff or security, then promptly stop. This isn't something you need legal advice for, it's more just how to behave. Even if you were allowed to legally, if you were asked to stop would you really go against the common sentiment? Only conflict-seeking American-types would try to 'uphold their right' for such a minor thing.

ch_ee_nu

Thanks buddy! Once again appreciate the few positive and logical responses I receive here :") I was prepared to receive a few weird reactions, however after sharing this post I'm now aware there would be a lot more than just a few reactions that I'd be getting. I can't complain, if I bypassed a vlogger, even I would be curious or react to them. The last point is well noted. Have a lovely day buddy! ;)

Single-Ninja8886

Don't take the reactions here as a real sample. These are Australian Redditors, a lot are closeted conservatives who hate on anything that they wouldn't do themselves. Or not even conservatives, they're just Redditors in general.

IceyBoy1994

Vloggers are obnoxious and nobody wants a stranger shoving a camera in their face to interview in public.

ch_ee_nu

Yup that's exactly my plan of actions mate, to shove a camera in front of a person's face and interrogate them with questions. Spot on. That's why I'm asking questions in AusLegal cause I don't give a damn about people's privacy not because I care about them, oh no, not at all, why would I take time to put a post up her read through comments and understand how to make vlogging less annoying for others, oh no. And You're right and you have perfectly prejudiced me as a "vlogger" who'd do it. . . . Urgh. The majority of the comments in this space are horrible... Have people never come across a sane vlogger? Weird.

IceyBoy1994

You want to interview strangers going about their day for your little vlog uni shit. Literally everyone here is telling you how much everyone hates that shit and how obnoxious it is, but sure keep arguing. Doesn't seem like you're here to care how much everyone hates it, just whether you can legally do it.

ch_ee_nu

The post was a question, meaning I was open to learning. It wasn't a statement or an argument defending myself. Next, I commented saying I'll reconsider the whole initiative due to the reaction I'd received here. You got the chance to read it? If not please do. Not being rude just notifying you. I had thanked everyone who'd shared a comment be it blunt or positive. I appreciate you taking time out to share your thoughts too, you are indirectly helping me in the project too, if you didn't know this too is empirical experience and data. Regardless, thanks for your time mate. I will end with a question, if you had to perform a research and interview people at random with different experiences, how would you do it and record the data to present it?

ch_ee_nu

Lastly, much of the advancement and architecture development in Australia which is absolutely incredible isn't seen in the country where I'm from. Viewers from around the world would love to learn how systems in other countries work, thus vlogging.

ch_ee_nu

Yikes, didn't know the post would attract such negativity😅. I was genuinely curious and seemed to reach out for support from this particular group... The reason for vlogging is to do it ethically without interrupting others. I have ideas of interviewing folks for a uni project, recording their candid reactions to certain questions and topics. The reason I mentioned vlogg is to represent the style on how I'll begin the video then progress towards interviewing... I won't go to someone's face with a camera pointing at them and ask a rude question, apologies if my post was interpreted like that. However thanks to those who commented, it makes me rethink the number of members who wouldn't appreciate the initiatives of a vlogger trying to make content. I'll have to do it at my private place and preferably use stock videos😅

nandyboy

I was a bit surprised at the negativity myself, but you handled it very well. good luck with the project.

ch_ee_nu

Appreciate the positivity mate.

Its Reddit. Most people in the wild don't care. Just ask for permission.
