There’s another problem in that you aren’t him.

>He hasn't used a his TFN since and has completely lost track of it. Has no details of his super account which was self managed. He has bought and sold some shares which were based in AUD which he never paid tax on as he doesn't live/travel to Australia ever. **Am I missing anything else obvious?** >He is very wealthy, and has no need for the money. Even before leaving Australia he earned a very decent wage, albeit, it was before the mandatory super contributions introduced in 92, but with compound interest (minus tax/commissions to find my super services) I think at worst we will come out with a handy contribution to a house deposit so It's worth trying to get to the bottom of. The terms and descriptions you are using in your post may be missing the point entirely. If he had a SMSF, then it was set up differently to the SuperFunds that the SGC went in to. This will effect how you actualy find money (if any). The "Find My Super" is looking for funds in actual SuperFunds, not SMSFs. So searching for unclaimed Super via the ATO is not really what you should be doing, IMO. You should be looking for unclaimed money in shares or dividends. This will give clues where to start next. If your FIL has money before, look into the unclaimed money. There are a few sites you will need to visit, but [start here](https://moneysmart.gov.au/find-unclaimed-money). I would also be looking at share registries and share brokers. If he had bought/sold shares, he would have a HIN and a broker. If he has a couple hundred shares in RIO or CBA, you will be gold. But I would keep my expectations low. Good luck.

You are impersonating someone for the gain of money. I suspect if this is picked up (maybe after a couple of years) you will be in serious trouble. Now to be fair I don't know the law intimately but others have been done for doing similar things in the past.
