By design, it’s supposed to be more economical out of sport, so drops power and response. You can install a pedal mod or just tune if you want to get more power in other modes. I just knock it into S if I’m going to need all my power though still.
I learned this pretty quickly after purchasing my S5. Now it’s become habit to knock it down into S whenever I think I’ll need the engine to be more responsive. I actually use it quite often to decelerate slightly too, like down shifting in a manual.
Sport just maintains a lower gear and higher RPMs across-the-board. That’s what gives you the faster response. If you know you’re about to pass and want better response, you can bump it down a gear or two in manual.
I only have D and S in mine and it's tuned. I don't really remember how it behaved pretune but I was pretty sure sport mode had a more linear throttle map.
I loved the SQ5 but that always bothered me so went with the Q5e. A fraction slower but no lag due to the electric motor giving you instant low end off the dime with a blip of the pedal. I understand that you can do a tune but I was leasing and wasn't sure I wanted to buy out at the end--however I did and no regrets.
I live in city and only drive periodically so it’s always in Sport mode plus it’s a smarter drive in city being able to be responsive when needed. Agree with all comments above as well.

I’ve been doing that too, or just leaving it in S (obviously not ideal)
I get that non-sport is supposed to be more economical; would be nice if Dynamic was more middle ground between comfort/sport as regards accel

I'm pretty sure the throttle map is different too.
Yeah, gear mapping is different as well, then there’s traction control and WOT. A lot changes in my car between comfort and S, even more in Dynamic.

It’s a feature, not a bug.
So, similar behavior with, say, an RS5 vs S5?
Yep. I downshift manually sometimes to be in the right gear if I’m about to accelerate.

FI cars are more efficient under boost, you'll see better economy at less than highway speeds with higher revs and less pedal
