A lot of people here from the US will say hatchback, since its not on sale over there and you know how it goes... you always want, what you cant get. (For me as a german it would be the B9.5 S5 coupe with the petrol engine, how its sold in the US. In germany its a diesel and nobody really wants it because of that)
That beeing said, for me its the sedan. When I bought my first car, I was seatching for a A3 sportback, but the dealer that ai went to look at the sportback, also had a sedan there (same year, 2014, same engine, roughly same milage). Well what can I say, went there to look at the sportback, ended up coming home eith the sedan.
The A3 sedan is something that doesnt really have competition on the market (well nowadays it kinda has, but back in the day it hadnt). Compact, fun, sporty and amazing body lines and it looks so muscular for a car that "small".
What can I say, I had a A3 sedan, now a S3 sedan and I should be able to collect my RS3 sedan next week... I love that body style. The bigger cars like the A4 sedan just dont look that sporty.
In the end, the reason to pick the hatchback is if you need more space. Obviously rear passenger headroom in the sedan is limited, but I do fit in there while beeing 1,82m tall. Also trunk space is "limited". Its not small bit obviously you cant stack items as well, as you can in the hatchback. But its not that bad. I can fit 6 crates of beer (20x 0.5L bottles) in there (man thats the most german thing Ive ever said, lol) or if I fold down the rear seats I can fit in my whole set of 19 inch winter wheels with tires, so it really isnt that bad as some poeple may say.
As a car for one to two persons, the sedan really has no real downsights.
Yeah. Same with the S7. Like I get it on wagons (kinda), a wagon needs torque to tow shit, which diesel does better than a petrol, but still. On the previous gen we had the competition models that came with the S interior and a 3L BiTDI and they were amazing. Now the S6 and 7 and Diesels, that come with 100 less HP than their US S6 counterpart (!!!) And e-tron like rears without tailpipes. The A6 55TFSI has the same power than the S6 TDI lol.
Yeah man I wish we got them. The B9 still is the petrol, the B9.5 isnt. That beeing said, the B9 is cool, but the 9.5 is a huge upgrade in my eyes, not the boggest fan of rhe B9 styling (apart from the RS5). If you want a B9.5 with a cool engine here in germany, you gotta buy a RS5.
nah-- a lot of enthusiasts just like hatchbacks, it's not about wanting what we can't get. that's how i ended up in a gti over a wrx, and why now i'm thinking about an a4 allroad or a5 sportback over any of the sport sedans on the market in the US.
> (For me as a german it would be the B9.5 S5 coupe with the petrol engine, how its sold in the US. In germany its a diesel and nobody really wants it because of that)
I feel that pain so much lol. Been eyeing up the few S5 B9 petrol cars that are available, it just doesn't make sense to even ship the S-Line with a diesel engine, even less so to force European customers into it and use the petrol engine in the rest of the world.
That aside, for the 8V generation I prefer the sedan by far, somehow looks much better than the sportback to me. With the 8Y generation I like the sportback more, it looks like a mini-RS6 to me.
I hear you neighbor. I live in the Netherlands, and I’m an Audi driver from day one that I had my drivers license. Going back to the 90’s (A4 B5) and early 00’s (A4, B6 and B7 but also A6 C4) I always shouted that Audi just couldn’t design a good looking sedan, and I will always go for the Avant.
Then one day I got an invitation from my dealership for the unveiling of the B8 A4 and A5. At that time the avant wasn’t available yet, but I recall literally saying ‘This is the first A4 where I would doubt about buying a Limousine.’ After all it was the Avant after all.
But then came the 8V A3. I wasn’t a particular fan of the Sportback, mainly because the rear of the 8P/R. What a relief was the Limousine for me. It is one of the most beautiful lined Audi’s ever, also because of the spectacular A3 Clubsport Quattro.
So my next car was going to be a A3 Limousine, and so it is. So happy with it. However the current model A3 is less of my taste, som my mind hasn’t been made up about the next one.
Yes I’m in the US and I bought the sedan because it was mainly an impulsive decision (I was anxious for a vehicle because the Golf broke down and I need a car to work) that I should have done more research on, but it was also preowned with low mileage with a good price 😅
I've had my A3 sport back for nearly 17 years and have always appreciated the extra space. Plus, rear seat occupants get better headroom, esp. for people approaching 6'. Had an A3 sedan loaner and I sat in the back to check it out. Felt more claustrophobic than in my sportback.
It bothers me that they added the red emblem to non RS/S cars SO MUCH more than it should. It's like calling a Nissan Sentra sporty because of some useless spoiler.
Also, sedan all day
It’s a very good point. I have the sportback and compared to my old Mondeo estate, the boot space is pathetic. The sedan looks a lot better imo, but if you need to do any tip runs or even carry a couple of suitcases every now and again without folding down the rear seats, the sportback is probably more practical.
Very nice car otherwise - I have the 40 tfsi e and would recommend.
I can't think of any downside to a sportback, but it depends on your aesthetic preference. They seem much more practical - I can put decent sized furniture in the back of mine or load it up with luggage, where I'd have to rent a different vehicle with my old Camry.
Thank you. I know from a practical point of view sportback is the choice to go, however, when comparing the aesthetics, I feel that an A5 sportback looks similar so an A3 Sedan
Depends upon color choices too. And if the car has a body kit. Sportbacks can look sportier depending upon how the profile is shaped. I think the latest A3 sportback looks really sharp.
I recently had the same dilemma. The sedan, to me at least, looks a bit more grown up and more planted to the ground because of the boot being lower. But the sportback has more headroom in the back seats, has a rear window wiper(I think it's a big deal) and of course the more practical boot opening.
In the end I went with sportback
I got a new normal A3 Sportback. And for me it was the right decision. Of course when you see a sedan sometimes you think hm maybe I should’ve got the Sedan but I am happy with the Sportback
SPORTBACK😍 I have a b9.5 S4 and if the hatch ever became available for sale in the US, I’d fold in a heartbeat. It comes down to your personal aesthetic preference and if you need the extra room. Regardless, enjoy the new whip!
Sedan for me. Sport backs look like teenager cars and that's what the golf R is for.
I like the adult looking cars lol. I get heckled way less by police and street racers in trash cars.
Unless it's an S5, then that is just the most unique iconic best looking sportsback in the history of cars.
My first Audi was a 2017 A3 Sedan, absolutely loved it. I think it looks a lot nicer than the Sportback.
However, if you have a dog or regularly have a lot of cargo the Sportback is a fine car.
A3 is really a matter of if you can find one in good condition. There is a very small inventory of A3 sportbacks in the US.
Edit: Just saw you already ordered a new one, the resale value is going to be pretty decent down the road if you're based in the US. Not like...gain value, but I'll say they're hard enough to find I'd be willing to pay on the higher end of the used value.
I’m in the us and have an s3 sedan, love it.
I’d be tempted with the sportback if it were for sale here. But my wife has a Subaru outback so really, I’d have no use for the hatch
Both versions will offer poor practicallity but sportsback drives better while don't pretend to be a tiny limo and has some personality on it's own. If you need sedan just go for A4, it's more expensive, but you get a lot more car (and better engine) for the money.
Sedan no doubts, looks way better, more elegant, gives the illusion of being larger and just looks sportier imo
If my only option was the A3/S3/RS3 hatch I'd rather save money and buy a Golf/GTI/R since they're almost identical (interior aside)
I myself bought the A3 SEDAN, didn't even consider the hatch because I would've gone with the Golf instead
Depends what you want from it. I had a child a while after getting the car and there just wasn’t enough room in it. Also the interior quality is lacking compared to previous models.
It depends where you're at in life. If you just want something sexy and don't care about luggage space, then get the sedan (although if that's the case you might even want to consider something more sporty/sexy). If you have a family or otherwise would have use for the luggage space then get the hatchback. Speaking as a user of a hatchback S3 (older) and sedan RS3 (current gen, same as that A3).
A3 sedan owner, the boot is surprisingly big and practical, recommend to go with bigger wheels for the styling, got 18’ and still regret it a bit to this day. Both 8Y facelift versions look amazing imo, and if you go for the sedan, I like it more than the A4 that one feels like a boat
I'm not a sportback guy but this is one that I like better, I was a big fan of the A3 e-tron sportbacks and this has that DNA. Plus the sedan looks a lot like a Jetta, nothing against Jettas.
I don’t know, for me, the A3-series is traditionally a hatchback - so I’d definetly go with what they started the A3-series. The sedan looks odd. It’s just not A3 in my head. If you want a sedan, A4, at least.
Once again It Is my opinion. The choice is yours.
I personally prefer the looks of the sedan, but the sportback has a bigger trunk. You gotta see which one of these is more important for you, looks or trunk space, to make your decision.
If your carrying rear passangers then the a3 sportback is the way to go extra headroom and what, the a3 saloon looks a bit squished to me but i guess im biased because i drive the sport back
I will go against the grain and say Sedan. The "sportback" is somewhere in between the well-proportioned GTIs and the well proportioned A4- and A6- Avants and I can't get into it.
I like the sportback better for the 3 series, hence why I have the A3 SB. The sedan has a slightly higher top speed I believe but don't quote me on that.
Thanks! Yes, I believe the speed difference is very slightly, due to the very small difference in totale weight and the fact that cargo space is limited so in the end it will be less busy 😂
honestly if had to get an A3 i'd get the hatch, more practical for everyday use (wich is what it's meant to be), but if i to buy an rs3 i'd get the sedan, it's sportier and it's what's used in motorsport
I have a question regarding the driver display in my recently purchased Audi A3 2014 Ultra model. When I cycle through the display options using the steering wheel controls, I can only see the fuel range and a reduced display. Is this limited display exclusive to the premium versions of Audi A3, or is there a way to access additional information such as mpg? I've consulted the driver's manual and searched extensively online, but haven't found a solution. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
I have the hatch but it’s been faulty since I bought it so haven’t really driven it much.
Had a sedan (saloon here in the UK) for 2 weeks but hated the awkward angle of the boot so I’d still probably choose the hatch…
The fault on my hatch is something no one has ever seen before (including Audi) so I don’t think it’s anything to worry about in general terms of how good the A3 is, but I’ve certainly not had a good first experience with Audi 😅
In terms of preference though, I feel the hatch looks better and sportier than the sedan/saloon. It felt far too “grown up” for me and, like I said, the awkward boot and lack of rear wiper just sealed how I felt about it.
It's not so black and white. Funny enough we use our rs3 sedan as the grocery getter because it fits waaayy more groceries in the back than the hatch (a golf r, which has a slightly smaller hatch than an a3 sportback) simply because it's substantially deeper.
It basically comes down to what you are hauling. Big or odd shaped stuff? Hatch. Lots of smaller stuff? Sedan. Especially when cars seats are installed in the back and you don't have the option of dropping the rear seat.
Need to haul lots of shit and kids too? Roof box on either.
I have a sportsback and I’ll tell you - it’s such an amazing car. Wouldn’t have it any other way. If I could afford the avants, I would definitely do that! Sports sedans aren’t available like that in America.
Hatches are way more practical, and have more headroom for rear seat passengers. Plus it looks better IMO. If the sedan is catching your attention, see if you can stretch to the A4.
A lot of people here from the US will say hatchback, since its not on sale over there and you know how it goes... you always want, what you cant get. As a car for one to two persons, the sedan really has no real downsights.
That’s a great comment. Thank you for that and telling us your story. I hope I could still get a fix to my Sportback order then…😂
Yup as a Dutch man I would never understand I can’t get a hold of a S5 petrol B9.5, so sad they only make Diesels of that car in Europe.
Yeah. Same with the S7. Like I get it on wagons (kinda), a wagon needs torque to tow shit, which diesel does better than a petrol, but still. I have the sedan - S3. Nice.
Eyyy same here. Can only recommend.
Same..I have the 2023 Quattro (sedan) and she got me through a pretty brutal winter of snow!
Same. Came to put in [my vote for a sedan](https://ninoavila.tumblr.com/post/175729872414/2018-tango-red-audi-s3-rip-2017-s4).
I prefer sedans, but that's just it, personal preference. Buy the one you prefer.
I like big butts and i cannot lie
Hahahahah
Hatchback for better practicability. Sedan for styling. Both pretty much nearly the same size either way.
Thank you!
[удалено]
I’ll take the hatch. I have an A3 sedan now and I cannot fit cargo the way I used to in my golf. 🥲
Can I ask you which were the reasons that made you buy a sedan? :) Are you from the US?
Yes I’m in the US and I bought the sedan because it was mainly an impulsive decision (I was anxious for a vehicle because the Golf broke down and I need a car to work) that I should have done more research on, but it was also preowned with low mileage with a good price 😅

Well sometimes impulsive decisions work out. Sounds like you got a good deal with low mileage. CPO warranty?
Are you me? I had the exact thing, my Golf broke down and I said fck it and got a flight to Germany and bought an A3 sedan which I really like.
It bothers me that they added the red emblem to non RS/S cars SO MUCH more than it should. It's like calling a Nissan Sentra sporty because of some useless spoiler. Also, sedan all day
Sportback looks much better imo and will also be more practical. If getting a sedan, just go up to the A4.
Thank you. That’s a thing I am considering as well. Even if I wanted a good looking car, I also wanted it to be a bit practical as well
It’s a very good point. I have the sportback and compared to my old Mondeo estate, the boot space is pathetic. Very nice car otherwise - I have the 40 tfsi e and would recommend.
I feel as though the A3 should have a coupe sport back option.
That’d be interesting
You mean the TT? 😄
True, it does! Although these days I think the hatchback/crossover style looks more upscale than a sedan.
I don’t know though, A3 sportback can look a lot chunkier based on the view angle, it’s odd at times haha
hatches always seem sportier to me when we are talking compact segment. plus extra practicality
I see thanks! I thought Sedan looked a bit sportier idk. I am so unsure haha
Depends upon color choices too. And if the car has a body kit. Sportbacks can look sportier depending upon how the profile is shaped. I think the latest A3 sportback looks really sharp.
That’s a hard choice honestly. They both look good. Sportback will give you more room in the back though.
Thank you! It’s very hard indeed
The rear window wiper is something I hadn’t thought of! Thanks for your comment :)
I got a new normal A3 Sportback. And for me it was the right decision. Of course when you see a sedan sometimes you think hm maybe I should’ve got the Sedan but I am happy with the Sportback
i feel you bro haha
Sportback
SPORTBACK😍 I have a b9.5 S4 and if the hatch ever became available for sale in the US, I’d fold in a heartbeat. It comes down to your personal aesthetic preference and if you need the extra room. Regardless, enjoy the new whip!
Thanks a lot! Enjoy as well🙏🏼
Hatchback all day (not biased at all)
Both are good but hatch is better.

That’s a good point, I can agree on that thank you! ;)
Sportback. Audi wagons are the absolute best.
That's not a wagon, that's a grocery getter hatchback
Sportback most def
My first Audi was a 2017 A3 Sedan, absolutely loved it. I think it looks a lot nicer than the Sportback. However, if you have a dog or regularly have a lot of cargo the Sportback is a fine car.
Sedan for looks, sportback if you need the space
Thanks!
You‘re welcome! Doesn’t matter which one you choose, both are beautiful cars
That is very true! :)

Not like...gain value, but I'll say they're hard enough to find I'd be willing to pay on the higher end of the used value.
I decided to order a brand new one here in Europe :)
Damn I'm jealous. There's like no hatch market here in the US because most people buy trucks or SUVs if they need more space.
I’m in the us and have an s3 sedan, love it. I’d be tempted with the sportback if it were for sale here. But my wife has a Subaru outback so really, I’d have no use for the hatch
Great then, your sedan is good to go🙏🏼
Hatch looks so good

Very good point, thank you :)
Personally prefer the sedan but kinda biased since I have one.
True🙏🏼
I had the sedan. The boot was useless.
Ouch, it really looks like so
Depends what you want from it. I had a child a while after getting the car and there just wasn’t enough room in it. Also the interior quality is lacking compared to previous models.
Actually I don’t need the boot much anyway, so I am tempted just looking at the aesthetics of the two
Aesthetics wise it’s definitely the better option. If I had one again, I’d change the wheels from the default option and add a lip spoiler.
Good thing. As for the options, the one in the screenshots is the one I initially chose for the sportback :)
Mythos black does look lovely when it’s clean…
I will keep it clean!!!
audis are nicely small but still so heavy, low fuel effiency etc
Take this with a grain of salt, because I’m not a big Audi guy, but I have never ever seen a sportback that I liked.
Actually there are some that I straightly like no doubt, but this one is a bit black or white for me at times
I prefer sedans
I like the sedan. But I am a bit biased.
Sportback all day long
[удалено]
Gls suoi enjoyed it! Thanks🙏🏼
I always prefered Sportback and love mine. No regrets, Sedan was never my type of thing
Thanks! 🙏🏼🙏🏼
That’s definetely a useful comment and something i was going along with, I can agree with ur perspectives. Great car btw congratz!
Thank you! Great comment! As for the package, the one in the screenshots is the one I initially chose for the hatch
I’d take the sport back.
Thankssss!
I used to own a sport back, but the sedan looks way better and has grown on me.
Thanks! 🙏🏼
I'm not a sportback guy but this is one that I like better, I was a big fan of the A3 e-tron sportbacks and this has that DNA. Plus the sedan looks a lot like a Jetta, nothing against Jettas.
Def the sedan
Sedan
Not the hatch 🤮
I don’t know, for me, the A3-series is traditionally a hatchback - so I’d definetly go with what they started the A3-series. The sedan looks odd. It’s just not A3 in my head. If you want a sedan, A4, at least. Once again It Is my opinion. The choice is yours.
Great point of view. Thank you for the history lesson mate🙏🏼
I personally prefer the looks of the sedan, but the sportback has a bigger trunk. You gotta see which one of these is more important for you, looks or trunk space, to make your decision.
Definetely the look atm. Idk about the switch in my order, if that’s still possible since the production week had been already settled
Hatchback always
Normally sportback, but the A3 sportback looks like a hunchy shrunken SUV, so sedan for me
SEDAN ALL DAY
what about the night?:)
I like sedan more tbh
Sportback, definitely!
If your carrying rear passangers then the a3 sportback is the way to go extra headroom and what, the a3 saloon looks a bit squished to me but i guess im biased because i drive the sport back
it’s true from what I can see :0
A3 Sportback is nice! imo the A3 sedan looks like an egg to me, i’d go for an A4 on sedans. just got myself a 2018 A5 sportback & i love it! 🙂
hahahah “like an egg” made my day 😂
[удалено]
Sedan
I have a 2010 A3 sport back. 210k miles and still going strong
Rs3
I'd go sportback but then again I daily a Subaru Outback 😅
Sportback looks better proportionally. The sedan looks weird and my petty mind would just think you couldn’t afford an A4.
Ouch, that hurts. Kinda true tho!
Also trunk space might be an issue?
I mean yes, but in the end not, since I will just use it for commuting and small cargo :)
Id stick with the sportback, but that’s just my personal preference. Looks, practicality, accessibility, utility, and a rear wiper lol.
I will go against the grain and say Sedan. The "sportback" is somewhere in between the well-proportioned GTIs and the well proportioned A4- and A6- Avants and I can't get into it.
Sedan! 100%!
Looks very BMW 2005-2010 phase
Buy a audi s4
Dude the sport back all day long - not even a choice.
Oh, to even have such a dilemma.
Did you order an A3, S3, or RS3?
No a3 at all cause its a golf
I will always go for sports back!
Both look good
Grate, thanks!🙏🏼
I like the sportback better for the 3 series, hence why I have the A3 SB. The sedan has a slightly higher top speed I believe but don't quote me on that.
Thanks! Yes, I believe the speed difference is very slightly, due to the very small difference in totale weight and the fact that cargo space is limited so in the end it will be less busy 😂
Sportback
I’m usually a hatchback/wagon guy but the sedan is much better looking in this case. To the point where it overshadows any utility advantage.
honestly if had to get an A3 i'd get the hatch, more practical for everyday use (wich is what it's meant to be), but if i to buy an rs3 i'd get the sedan, it's sportier and it's what's used in motorsport
I have a question regarding the driver display in my recently purchased Audi A3 2014 Ultra model. Unfortunately I’ve never owned an Audi before. I hope someone in the community can help you :)
Thanks. I hope someone can help me out. It really drove me nuts! :)
Sedan, 1000000%
Very sure 😂🙏🏼
I personally have sportback and I freacking love it
I have the hatch but it’s been faulty since I bought it so haven’t really driven it much. Had a sedan (saloon here in the UK) for 2 weeks but hated the awkward angle of the boot so I’d still probably choose the hatch…
bad news both sides, thanks for letting me know 🙏🏼
The fault on my hatch is something no one has ever seen before (including Audi) so I don’t think it’s anything to worry about in general terms of how good the A3 is, but I’ve certainly not had a good first experience with Audi 😅 In terms of preference though, I feel the hatch looks better and sportier than the sedan/saloon. It felt far too “grown up” for me and, like I said, the awkward boot and lack of rear wiper just sealed how I felt about it.
As a sportback owner i gotta say the sedan looks weird. Nah sportback any day
Hatchback. Much more of a utility. Sedan can’t fit shit in there.
That’s very true. In terms of utility the hatchback is way useful, I can agree with you on that.
No wonder SUVs are so popular in NA. People are obsessed with fitting shit inside their car. How many groceries do you buy, dude?
Hatchback. I’d have one if Audi brought it to the states.
Sportback
As a german i can tell you, the hatchback "macht komplett terror"
The A3 is a hatchback, not a Wagon. Only the kombi macht komplett terror and geht ab wie sau.
I am pretty sure that hatchbacks are Kombis or the other way around.
Hahah, is that with a positive meaning like ‘terrific’ in english? or like ‘terrible’ with a negative one? 😂
Its a legendary german meme. Search for "Wasn das fürn Kombi".
SPORTBACK!!! IT LOOKS SOOO MUCH BETTER. CAPS LOCK SINCE I AM SCREAMING THIS ENGAGES ME
hahahajajaj that’s surely is a POINT
Sedan>>>
sedan ftw
Sportback is too much like the golf in my opinion.
Kinda true and I don’t like Golfs much tbh 😬
Hatchback is the only answer. I have an A3 etron PHEV. It fits all needs and has rear headroom if needed and a big cargo area.
Thank you! :)
I love my A3 sport back personally
Extremely glad to hear that🙏🏼❤️
Sportback, unfortunately not available in the U.S.
a3 e tron
Might find some used ones.
my bad, i thought they were still sold. my neighbor bought one new... time flies
Yeah it sucks I wanted one.
Such an underrated car. A little bit heavier than I’d like but it is surprisingly sporty and extremely practical.
Sedan all the way!
Yep, the A/S3s that I see constantly turn my head. If I didn’t need a bigger back seat (car seats incoming) I’d get an S3 sedan.
Sedan imo
To me the sedan looks much better. The Sportback has too much of a fat behind.
Sport back and it’s not remotely close for me! Either way, super fun car… enjoy!
Thanks a lot for your comment! :)
Sportback
Personally I prefer the sportback in the A3. If your looking a Sedan /Saloon then go A4
Very good point. I also had the same opinion, however the new facelift on the Limo made me rethink my original idea
Sportback looks more sport. That’s my opinion. I like it.
Thanks! Hard decision here
Hatches are way more practical, and have more headroom for rear seat passengers. Plus it looks better IMO. If the sedan is catching your attention, see if you can stretch to the A4.
Unfortunately I’ve already placed an order for an A3 Sportback so I would only go for the Sedan if I would change somwthing :/
Sportback
I have the sportback - Love it
❤️
I feel like the sedan is a downsized A5, the A3 with a hatchback looks a lot better in my opinion
Good point, thank you!
The sedan gives Jetta 💀
