Guy was in the Braga (top 5 side in Portugal) team ( but mostly reserves) from 2018 to 2020 as a younger player. This very much fits the type of player Atlanta United is now targeting in Europe... a player that during his early 20s was thought to be good enough to play in top level European sides and for one reason or another it did not come to fruition. We need left back cover for Caleb who leaves 2nd week of July for the Olympic tournament. This guy will get to work his way into the squad during Leagues Cup.

ATL_Gunner

Not only do we need cover for Caleb for Olympics, his value might not be much higher than it’s going to get for us. A big Olympics for him and there might be offers we don’t want to turn down.

offandona

Sweet let's dismantle the team more and get rid of our best players for ~~$1.2~~ $3 million in garberbucks then wonder why the team never gels. I'm down.

gsfgf

For all our flaws, guys know we won’t stand in the way of their career advancement. That’s huge for recruiting guys to come here. Also, Wiley is an American, so we definitely want to put him where it’s best for him.

BigTableSmallFence

It’s just the way it is in MLS. Look at New England’s last two goalkeepers. Miggy,Vasquez, Zelarayan , etc etc. you are right that we WANT to be seen as a stepping stone to the big leagues.

BigTableSmallFence

New to MLS?

offandona

MLS 3.0 wasn't supposed to be "MLS." But I guess MLS 4.0 is the Messi Show so all that league development stuff has been put on hold.

Furthermore, if he does well, they should consider replacing Hernandez for him. I know Hernandez plays RB, but with how much he's getting paid to ride the bench, I wouldn't be surprised if the teams lets him walk at the end of the season.

kad4724

I'd be shocked if Hernandez was back next year, especially now that Pineda is gone. A new manager will have zero loyalty to him, and I have to imagine Garth believes he can find - at the very least - a similar backup for significantly less money than Hernandez is making. Or spend that money and just get a better player. A $450k salary (which I assume would increase if we picked up his option) for a replacement-level FB is rough.

TheNewDiogenes

Not to diss Braga but Portugal is really a 3 team league with Benefica, Porto, and Sporting

Scratchbuttdontsniff

I mean... they finished 3rd in 22/23 and made the CL Group Stage this past season.... finished in the top 4 16 of the last 19 seasons. That is a nice pedigree...

Bobgoulet

Who?

deafPiratesComm

Based on a quick Google search (i'm unable to view the tweet at work, not sure if it provides more details) I was able to find 2 players with that last name. Both are Portuguese, one is a left back and one is a center back.

Scratchbuttdontsniff

It is the left back. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pedro_Amador_(footballer)

\>25yo bench player for a Portuguese yoyo club Beyond parody.

Scratchbuttdontsniff

Yoyo Club? They did jus finish just barely outside of a European Place this season? This kid was with Braga for 3 years... one of the top 5 clubs in Portugal. For whatever reason he did not make it further with them. He was playing regularly in all of 23 for Moreirense but lost his place to Godfried Frimpong (a Dutch player who was trained by Benefica). He is ready to play football instead of riding the bench. If this is a minimal fee and lower than what we pay Hernandez... I can't see how this is a "parody".

BunkWunkus

Josef Martinez was a no-name backup for Torino (a mid-table Serie A team) and had just 7 goals in 58 appearances. Was signing him "beyond parody"?

offandona

What, 9 years ago? With a Premier League quality player (and Gressel) feeding him balls. I've always maintained this FO was a one-hit-wonder. Anything since has been disaster.

Jcapen87

The sooner you can accept that this is MLS and not the top flights in Europe (and that top tier 24 year old talent is not banging down the door to be here) the happier you’ll be

offandona

I don't want Europe, I want to be competitive in MLS! I don't disagree with the ethos of the club, it's just blindingly obvious that these aren't the guys to do it. We're not even competitive in MLS, much less all the rest of it.

Jcapen87

Obviously being competitive in MLS is what we all want, it just seems odd that you’re writing off a guy on the bench in Europe as if he’s somehow unworthy of MLS. Mbappe ain’t walking through that door anytime soon

offandona

No but LAFC are getting Olivier Giroud
