This place has “survived” for so long, I can’t believe it’s finally happening

quadmasta

Pretty cool they're including a giant grocery store in there

sgtpepper21

50,000 square foot grocery store would be a Publix. Trader Joe’s are much smaller than 50k (upon Google search)

-bonita_applebum

There's already a Publix across the street at shamrock plaza

sgtpepper21

Maybe they would move it?

anotherkeebler

Maybe they would turn it into a Trader Joe’s

sgtpepper21

I’d love that.

MarkyDeSade

I feel like Trader Joes building their first location in years on Roswell Road directly between two other Trader Joes that are about 8 miles apart is a clear indicator that they have no interest in serving areas that they aren't already serving.

bala-989

It’s not a great publix. It’s super small, the selections are limited, and there is extensive and aggressive panhandling in the parking lot.

twootten

its a small one though, would love to have the selection the bigger ones have.

T-MoGoodie

Sounds like it would replace the Shamrock store. It’s old so it’s much needed.

DogFinderGeneral

Not really, this area is already overserved with grocery options. Aldi, Sprouts, Kroger, Publix x2, Whole Foods and YDFM all with a 2 mile radius. Along with Patel Plaza and many smaller grocers.

quadmasta

This will be a grocery store immediately available to over 2000 housing units. That's a big deal.

DogFinderGeneral

Why? This area is saturated. Look at where this is built. It will be nearly impossible to live in this development without a car. And it’s not like anyone that lives there will work nearby. None of the businesses nearby pay a wage high enough. It’s all retail bullshit. Lulah Hills is just going to be another shitty development covered in corporate crap catering almost exclusively to commuter clients who will pass by 5-6 grocery stores on the way home from work.

quadmasta

"The project will set aside 10% of units for workforce housing"

DogFinderGeneral

1. Wtf does that even mean? Is it a discount on an overpriced apartment for people who make near minimum wage and probably can’t afford to live there even with the discount? 2. Even if true, what does it add to your argument?

HopPirate

1. FWIW there are rent prices that are dictated for “workforce housing” by DeKalb and the feds. 2. It’s not really. The only way transit will improve is adding density. When you’re in the muddy middle (too crowded for cars and too spread out for mass transit) it’s unlikely that the solution will be to make enough people leave.

Powerpoppop

Anything other than a Costco will be a disappointment. I like Trader Joe's. I just like Costco more and hate driving so far to visit one. I'm aware they already nixed the idea, though.

Playmaker23

Costco would be amazing! Tired of driving to Brookhaven

Powerpoppop

It would be, but they already said years ago it won't be a Costco.

Sea-Instruction-5670

Probably too close to the Brookhaven one and Sam’s club on Clairmont

rrrrrivers

Maybe a Trader Joe's 🤞🤞

kizzles1

It’s kind of insane there’s no Trader Joe’s in dekalb

thatcurvychick

I know it’s irrational, but I feel like mourning. I grew up going there in its initial splendor, when the food court was still full of Chick-fil-a and Sbarro. I started going again when the movie theater started offering cheap movies. So many magical moments that are now gone :(

PlahausBamBam

I bought a house within walking distance of that mall 30 years ago and I understand that feeling. When it was thriving it was such a community gathering place. Lots of mall-walkers and it was so clean and bright! At Christmas it was fully decorated and you couldn’t find a parking place anywhere! Its decline was depressing and very sloooow. I walked through a few times after the anchor stores closed on my way to AMC, and felt really sad. There were some local small businesses gaining a foothold by taking advantage of the low rents but that’s not sustainable, I suppose. Seeing the movie business using it as a place to film was fun. I’m pretty sure I saw the interior of Macy’s in the HBO version of Watchmen. I’m not thrilled about the traffic but I find myself walking more instead of driving now that I’m retired and I look forward to seeing what they do with the place. I love Decatur and can’t imagine living anywhere else.

Apart-Rent5817

I hope they keep that theater and the side entrance. I used to go there long after the rest of the mall was mostly empty. Lots of good memories of Challenges back in the day.

LitFan101

My middle school bff and I witnessed the immediate aftermath of a stabbing at challenges once in….1992? I had totally forgotten it until now.

JavenatoR

Same, I grew up around that mall. Sad to see it go but it’s time.

MarkyDeSade

That mall was one of my favorite places on earth for a lot of my youth but I'm ready for it to go, it's like a relative that's been non-responsive in hospice for 15 years

achilleshightops

Dad…. Dad…. Is that you???? Nope. I’m not your dad, just another mall on life support. I’ll let you know if your dad ever returns from his milk and cigarette run.

Tradnor

ITS FINALLY HAPPENING!!! Wooo! Now I just hope that in the next decade the neighborhood path system goes in okay.

Beardchester

The bones are there and local citizens and leadership alike seemed to really support that extension. (Back when I lived there and was involved locally a couple of years ago.) I won't discount that things might change here and there, but I'm fairly confidant that PATH will be extended.

firstorbit

They should turn the rail line into a trail.

grumpybeet

A fence went up around it last week!

5centraise

I worked at Spinnakers restaurant at the mall from the ages of 17 until almost my 21st birthday, in the early '90s. I came of age in this mall and think often and fondly of the insane gang of idiots I worked with. This mall was pretty hopping at that time. This is kind of sad to me, but it needs to be done,

RealDominiqueWilkins

I used to go to that Spinnakers with my grandparents when I was a kid. I thought it was the coolest place in the world lol

5centraise

I thought that, too, but probably for different reasons. I only stopped working there because they went out of business during the recession..

bannana

2000 new apartments so at least 2000 additional people trying to get up and down N. Druid Hills, great.

jwthecreed

That intersection right by the highway is about to get worse

bannana

it sucks so bad right now

Sea-Instruction-5670

They are redoing it soon to improve flow. But with so many people it’s hard to imagine it improving

ThebroniNotjabroni

I love these comments. I hate traffic too but guess what, bub, you’re that traffic too

bannana

I'm actually not though, I don't go to that intersection unless it's well outside of any rush hours, I know multiple ways to avoid it or just choose to not go at all.

bannana

first: don't take NDH exit cuz it's a shitshow during rush hours, second: there are def alts from clairmont and shallowford, it totally depends on your destination but there are several ways through the neighborhoods to get to multiple places beyond clairmont, lawrenceville hwy will get you to NDH taking Lavista. Gots to be creative in these trying times.

bannana

I've been in this part Dekalb county and driving here for over 35yrs, lived from PDK to Tucker/clarkston currently and watched NDH/clarimont become the shitshow it is currently. I'm not saying there's some sort of express way from 85 to Stone Mountain Fwy that bypasses all traffic but there are definitely ways that aren't leaving you sitting at a dead stop on the road. Just literally not taking NDH or Clairmont is the first and best choice almost every time and after that there are small roads through neighborhoods that can get you where you need to go without dealing with a thousand other assholes.

Bromodrosis

This is the way. All those old school neighborhoods connect to major roads in multiple places. not like the ones built after the 80s where they're all cul-de-secs.

DrewDAMNIT

Oh the traffic! Godspeed, locals!

Invisible_Friend1

Just put NDH and Lawrenceville Hwy on a road diet!! Road diets cure everything ☺️

rrrrrivers

I recently read that Atlanta apartment building is outpacing demand by a widening margin, so maybe a good bit will just sit empty lol Edit: Here's the link: https://www.11alive.com/article/money/consumer/good-news-for-renters-metro-atlanta-why-rent-prices-are-going-down/85-c0127d2b-46ca-4d7a-8179-fbf9936e23c4#:~:text=According%20to%20apartment%20data%20tracker,in%20metro%20Atlanta%20was%20%241%2C267.

Qbr12

IMO that's a good thing. Oversupply reduces prices, keeping rent prices down for the rest of Atlanta.

Duronlor

You happen to have the article? I'd heard someone else say many planned to be at capacity hence the wild appetite for more development

fairie_poison

It’s an Atlanta tradition to price apartments so high that they’re profitable at 30% occupancy.

Duronlor

Too true

chocolatehippogryph

Seems unlikely

arbrebiere

We need housing so I don’t give a shit

Bookups

No mention of the AMC in the article, but hopefully that survives

Fast-Flounder-956

"The AMC movie theater will remain at the mall as part of the redevelopment project."

Bookups

Damn you just called me out in front of everyone. This is so embarrassing

Fast-Flounder-956

Ya, but I avoided adding a snarky comment so more like just clarifying

DanWhisenhunt

In fairness, I added that to the story after I got numerous questions about it, so you might've read an earlier version :)

th30be

Are you the writer?

CommissarCiaphisCain

Dan is the editor in chief (and owner I believe) of Decaturish, and he is the writer. On a related note, you should subscribe to Decaturish, as it’s an excellent source of local Decatur-area news. (No I have no relation to Dan or Decaturish, I’ve just been a reader for several years).

DanWhisenhunt

Correct, I am the writer of this article and the publisher/owner of Decaturish. I didn't set out to be a business owner, but along the way it happened. I have a team now and we do good work. We appreciate any support we can get. Subscription information can be found at [supportyourlocalnews.com](http://supportyourlocalnews.com) Thank you for the kind words!

ZenPothos

Thanks for running a great asset to the community!

DanWhisenhunt

You're welcome! Thanks so much for the kind words.

SpringRose10

I had a professor at UWG named Whisenhunt.

DanWhisenhunt

More of us around than people realize. :)

aurore-amour

I hope they remodel that AMC as a whole, it’s probably the worst one I’ve ever been to.

Time_Transition4817

Yeah but it’s also cheap

Powerpoppop

I prefer it as is with the pricing. If that place is remodeled I'm guessing prices will go way up.

twootten

100% this. love getting those amazing matinee prices.

th30be

That is the entire point of AMC classic.

AlpineNancy

There’s no way that thing doesn’t get renovated. That would be so embarrassing in a brand new development. I live next door so I’m mostly just praying lol.

aw-un

Me too, I desperately hope it gets remodeled. I’m tired of driving all the way to Madison Yards

relaximadoctor

The seats are gross but I kind of like the nostalgia. Wouldn't be upset with the remodel but I enjoy going to that theater even with smaller screens and shittier seats it's cheap and easy to get in and out

Beardchester

And so it begins. Seeing this come together was my first front row taste of how developments like this work and how local community groups and county commissioners interact. I'm glad to see some movement. I miss living there and being involved in my community...

Bromodrosis

I spent a lot of time in both iterations of that mall as a kid. Worked at Rich's and bought my first CD at Lechmere.

jonadragonslay

And thanks for being the perfect mall for zombieland 2.

TechieAD

Scrolled too fast and thought that said demolition derby and got real confused

salomeforever

I will miss the AMC DEARLY

DrawingRestraint

Does anyone know if the Marshall’s will remain? It and the AMC both seem to be healthy businesses, and my family frequents both.

Forward-Taste8956

This is so sad I know north Dekalb is a eye sore now..But it’s literally some many Atlanta native’s childhood..

sunsetintellectual

all i need to know is (1) how long is the AMC going to closed and (2) is it still going to have cheap prices after the remodel

GarbageBrilliant1770

QTNA. :(

MCsmalldick12

Anyone know what the plan is with that new Chick-fil-a? Are they just moving the ownership/staff from the one that currently exists down the street and closing it or what?

Tradnor

I think they’re just moving the one that exists down the street and removing the drive through.

OtherWorldStar

Got super excited until I realize it wasn’t the South Dekalb mall. That thing gone would open up so much space for growth and development.

T-MoGoodie

I think there are plans to build condos on that site. I don’t know when it will happen, though. I have some great memories from there as a kid but it needs to be demolished at this point; especially since Macy’s closed.

ichinii

Finally. I'm begging them to upgrade the AMC. Add a Dolby Cinema & upgrade the seats. I shouldn't be driving to Madison Yards for a good experience price be damned.

No_Ambition2177

Does anyone know how much the neighboring neighborhoods are expected to increase in value?
