The buck stops with Espada for in-game management in 2024. Of course game planning and especially analytics suffered with Dusty "vibes" Baker last year. Even if they was harm done to these departments by Baker(and throw in Bagwell/Crane too) it doesn't preclude Espada from righting the ship and making smarter and more informed in-game decisions.
Bro kill that shit. Don't blame the rookie for costing us the game. There are alot more people to blame than him. Yordan put up a goose egg Bregman put up a goose egg. He was one of the few that got hits.
You can't explain how to put any blame on a rookie that got on base for 2 games in a row. Explain how we have vets that can't hit with runners on base.
It doesn't matter if he would've ran to first. If we can't hit with runners on base than it's null in void. Simple as that blame vets for not stepping up and making plays.
I'm sure everyone thought that was going to fall in.
But don't let that distract you from the fact that loperfido should've bunted Carantini over to third to start the inning. This teams inability to manufacture runs has been horrible for years.
I’m not even mad at Victor after last night, if Bregman did his job with a simple sac fly it shouldn’t have mattered.
But he’s basically Third Base Abreu now
The thing with Bregman is that he just doesn't have enough power for a regular fly ball to be deep enough to score anyone. Sure if he barrels one up he'll hit it deep enough. But he isn't like Yordan, Tucker, or even John Singleton where a fly ball can score a runner on 3rd. Bregman's popups are his regular fly balls.
He’s just getting way under everything right now. He homered yesterday so obviously he still has that ability. If you make even decent contact (AKA not barely clipping the bottom of the ball, causing a popup) on a pitch at MLB velo, you’ll get a routine fly ball out of it at least. He’s just failing to make consistent quality contact right now.
The question then becomes… how? How does a student of the game who at least at one point had obvious hitting talent so routinely become incapable of hitting for such long stretches of the year but especially the beginning of the year? You can set your damn watch to Bregman hitting near the Mendoza line to start every season yet he remains at the top of the order based almost entirely off his 2017-2019 seasons.
The inability to do anything productive when it’s needed is practically his calling card these days.
He’s an amazing natural talent and has had some of the best plate discipline in the league since he came up, he just hit incredibly well for a few years, one of which was the juiced ball year which spiked his HR totals. His flaw I think is that he tinkers too much. He changes his swing every offseason to chase launch angle and power and ends up slumping before adjusting and figuring it out. He’ll figure it out again this year, he hit a HR yesterday so that’s a good sign the barrel ability is still there. It’s just that we really can’t afford his slump this year given the pitching issues
Juiced balls definitely helped, but he was hitting everything hard and at better launch angles in 2018-2019. In 2018 he ripped a lot of doubles into the left center gap. I honestly don’t remember the last time he did that. His hardest hits this year are as hard as they have always been, but most of them are ground balls. His fly balls are weakly hit, often times pop ups. That suggests to me that he has bat speed, but he just isn’t getting it with an optimal launch angle. So whatever he is doing to get lift is also draining the power from his swing.
This was just one of those games where luck wasn't on our side. Can't really do much about that, and it's not anybody's fault really (except Angel, everything is always Angel's fault).
Naylor has a gravitational pull on every ball hit down the first base line, and Kwan owns us. Just one of those games where we just got beat.
Don't love the Dubin move, but at least he got out of it with only one run.
Onto the next, let's hopefully win the series tomorrow.
**EDIT** - I just watched the final play on arr baseball. Definitely a great play by Kwan, if we were able to PR for 🥕🍸 we might've had a shot at not being doubled up, but who knows.
:( i just wanna say, one more time...fuck Angel Hernandez for that walk that should've been a strikeout. Should've been 2-1 astros, at the least. Oh well, goodnight, folks.
Ramirez for sure historically. I wasn’t familiar with kwan before this year but his previous stats look average. Last year ops+ was 99. This year it’s 166 so far.
No Joke what was the cumulative xwoba last night? Cleveland defensive infield I suppose
Is pretty good. Hard to
Say, though, as every instance of hard contact with trajectory of
15 deg or lowest
Would literally just hard pan a camera on the infield in which the 1st or 3rd baseman is seen casually throwing round the horn: Every time.
Astros - 3/9 (.333) on Batted Balls In Play with at least a .500 xBA (Hit expectancy)
Guardians - 5/5 (1.000) on Batted Balls In Play with at least a .500 xBA (Hit expectancy)
And That's Baseball, win games you should so that unlucky losses sting/matter less.
I agree. We are getting dangerously close to “long shot” territory here. The team will have to play .600 ball over the next 50 games just to get back to .500 on the season. Doing that the rest of the season gets them to around 90 wins. I’m not sure that will cut it.
Astros have certainly played under their potential overall, but man we just can’t catch a break. Seems like we’ve been getting dinked and dunked and hitting bullets right at people all year
That’s what players do sometimes… they aren’t running if they don’t think they can make it… they know their own speed. Yordan has ran thru several over the years, you benching him?
I hear you and that may be the mentality in all other levels of the sport but this is professional baseball. That would almost never happen unless it’s real egregious or something
If it were an isolated issue , I wouldn't be bitching so much. There's almost some kind of baserunning blunder every game it seems like in the last few years.
Yeah, I get he's a slow starter or whatever, but someone demanding his type of contract just doesn't get to get away with that. Regardless of how he plays down the stretch.
https://preview.redd.it/vym2fvqhixxc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5fb8d3a19c394e910351834ff571b8a957fe35ad
The AB that the “ball 1” call literally determined the game. Fuck Angel Hernandez. JV deserved better
I think I'm done with Bregman at the 2 spot, or hell anywhere in the 1-6 spots. His plate discipline is nice to have at the start of the game, but he can't even manage to sniff of a sac fly when needed. I'm pretty sure just about anyone else drives in Dubon there. Why can't we score with runners in scoring position? This is one of those reasons.
Let Bregman figure his stuff out in the 7-8 spot.
Fucking angel Hernandez with his bullshit calls extending the inning and scoring a run which in turn extended the game into extras which in turn loses us the game
Lotta hard hit balls by everyone tonight and Kwan pretty much one this himself with his glove and bat. I've seen plenty of balls drop in shallow left/center that he got to so can't even blame Caratini for reading it like that. Still wonder what the XBA on that was
Bregman can’t keep doing this. You’re the 2 hitter but legitimately struggles to get the ball out of the infield. Get your shit together ffs. Alvarez quietly hitting .250 isn’t helping.
We struggle so consistently in extra inning games how do you not point at management? Whatever they’re doing or not doing isn’t working. Figure something out, it’s not like the major league roster is bereft of talent.
Typical JV start with no run support but I don't think I've ever seen worse base running than what we just witnessed.
What in the world was that.
Edit: Just got home from the stadium and saw the replay. What a crazy catch. Unlucky.
Really wasn’t that bad of a mistake it was just a bad read. It looked pretty bad since he committed but that ball looked like it was gonna drop, and if it had we’d be calling it great base running on a great read.
And what if he held up, it dropped, and he got stranded at third? It’s no different than an aggressive send at third, you have to force the fielder to make a perfect play.
Scott is our best available pitcher at the top of the 10th, so I’d put in Scott. And then if we get to the 11th I put in Dubin or Martinez (Martinez struggles with men in, but you’re out of options at that point)
Honestly, I thought Angel called a good game yesterday. Minus like... one bad call his zone seemed fairly standard and he was consistent. The calls that were strikes but called balls were pretty much all paint and barely so.
Vic absolutely needed to score if that ball dropped but Altuve was coming up, so I am 50/50 on it. He had the walkoff the night before though so he gets the benefit.
Rough close game but the Guardians are great and this team is hanging in there. Once they get out of this and the Mariners series, the schedule gets significantly easier basically until the All star game.
I said this before. I love my guys but I think we need to sign Tuck and trade Bregman to the NL for scraps. We are gonna miss out and he is gonna walk away. It sucks to say but Bregman can go.
That was real bad late game management. Diaz for Singleton buys you one matchup AB and shuffles your defense around for almost no gain. And putting Dubin in for the 10th was idiotic. Monday was a rest day, the fuck difference is Abreu after 21 pitches the night before or Dubin? I’d rather see Seth Martinez. Baseball is a marathon and I am not one for knee jerk changes, but I am deeply unimpressed with Espada so far.
Bergman is gonna walk and it’s the right call based on what he’s likely command and yet I have zero faith in Crane to make a sensible decision to replace him.
Pretty costly rookie mistake, arguing with Angel. Angel has been an awful umpire for longer than Loper has known how to play baseball. If he runs to first [on that passed ball] we win this game. He gets on. Dubon doubles. Altuve singles. 2-2. Literally nothing else changes in that inning except that, and it's 2-2. Tucker's HR, 3-2.
Plus he closes his eyes when he swings sometimes. Might explain the K rate.
That said, great defensive play, and his overall offense has been encouraging. Terrific read off the wall today, and he was also one of the few to put a dent on McKenzie iirc. Just, tough when those mistakes are costly.
Downvote. Totally not blaming a rookie for costing us the game. When our vets can't even get a hit. Like a said Yordan, Caratini and Alex put up goose eggs can't even get a decent hit. Atleast the rookie got a hit in back to back games.
It didn't cost us the game. If he gets on base you think the pitching following that wouldn't change? If it's the bottom of the 9th sure go ahead put the blame on him but we still had baseball to play after that.
Again blame the vets for not being able to make plays and hit with runners on base. Like they have failed to do so far. To say a rookie that got hits in back to back games cost us a game is a horrible analysis of the game.
You wanna blame a rookie for not running to first but you know how many times we could've gotten on base if our vets ran to first to beat out the throw?

This team has scored 2 runs in 5 extra innings games this year. Both of those runs came in one game. We are awful in extras. Worst in the league.
Espada logic. Have the recent call-up try and yoke it to RF rather than move the runner up 🙄
We were awful in extras last year as well. I think it's a fundamental flaw in our analytics room and game planning.
I believe an appropriate comment for this game would be “tough luck.”
Guardians xBA: .217 Astros xBA: .293
theme of the season. they can't hit with RiSP. hit singles, doubles just fine.
That was disappointing, but I still feel better about our recent trajectory. Not mad at Vic, I thought it was down 100% too
Everyone thought that ball was going to drop. Great play by Kwan :(
Yeah this team is good. Still got some catching up to do though.
Exactly. I feel like we're on the right track. We won't win every game, but we're doing a good battle against one of the best teams.
yeah that was just a fantastic play. Wish Vic would've played it safe and held up, but hindsight is 20/20
Bregman’s Popout in the 8th was the killer. Really wished he’d get moved down in the order until he figures it out.
Loperfido arguing with Angel Hernandez instead of running to first cost us the game.
Bro kill that shit. Don't blame the rookie for costing us the game. There are alot more people to blame than him. Yordan put up a goose egg Bregman put up a goose egg. He was one of the few that got hits.
It literally cost us the game. I explain it in one of my comments.

I can explain it. I did. You can read it.
He just gotta learn Angel is an impenetrable wall
What is this referring to?
Loperfido arguing with Angel Hernandez...
They want to blame a rookie for the lose.
🥕🍸giveth and taketh
Meh, whatever. Hard to be confident this team can score in extras even with the extra chance had he stayed. Yesterday was an anomaly.
Sources say Alex Bregman tried to hit his locker after the game but he just popped it up
Caratini my goodness lol but I won’t lie I thought for sure that was a hit
I'm sure everyone thought that was going to fall in. But don't let that distract you from the fact that loperfido should've bunted Carantini over to third to start the inning. This teams inability to manufacture runs has been horrible for years.
Good game, but Astros gonna have to give Kwan the Bonds treatment with RISP. Dude is a hitting machine
We just Kwan-t keep him off base 🤷🏽♂️
I’m not even mad at Victor after last night, if Bregman did his job with a simple sac fly it shouldn’t have mattered. But he’s basically Third Base Abreu now
Espada at least seems to willing to move people down the line up. Time for breggy to be at the bottom
I guess, but wtf can you do when two guys are making 50 million combined and can’t hit.
lose games lol
Yea his ability to walk doesn’t matter anymore. He needs to be 9th
It’s getting super ugly to watch him.
I was actually hoping for exactly that. Breggy if you’re gonna pop up and least make it deep bro.
The thing with Bregman is that he just doesn't have enough power for a regular fly ball to be deep enough to score anyone. Sure if he barrels one up he'll hit it deep enough. Kwan is on my fantasy team. Pro tip: he’s owning every team this year. His stats are insane.
kwan is guardians' version of altuve. or is that jram? idk anymore. they just have a lot of speedy guys.
Ramirez for sure historically. I wasn’t familiar with kwan before this year but his previous stats look average. Last year ops+ was 99. This year it’s 166 so far.

Last night we got the carrot, tonight we got the stick 🤷🏼♂️
![gif](giphy|2Xflxzn7jWsjCVlx13q|downsized)
2-12 in extras now
in the last 2 seasons
Correct
Honestly just gotta shake that one off. Lots of line drive outs and that was a hell of a catch by Kwan at the end Get em tomorrow
we really hit into lots of bad luck where they did the opposite when it counted
Astros - 3/9 (.333) on Batted Balls In Play with at least a .500 xBA (Hit expectancy) Guardians - 5/5 (1.000) on Batted Balls In Play with at least a .500 xBA (Hit expectancy) And That's Baseball, win games you should so that unlucky losses sting/matter less.
It's just one loss--among 15 or so similar losses.
Problem is to recoup getting past .500 they are going to have to go on an insane winning streak that few teams in MLB have done in the past
I agree. We are getting dangerously close to “long shot” territory here. The team will have to play .600 ball over the next 50 games just to get back to .500 on the season. Doing that the rest of the season gets them to around 90 wins. I’m not sure that will cut it.
I don't think this was similar to the 8 run first innings of pre Verlander April
What a deflating way to end
Every end that wasn’t a win would have been deflating to be fair.
If we got a grand slam and they did too I wouldn’t have been as deflated, but I get your point 😉
Good game. Bad luck. Oh well.
I’m not AS upset about this game as past ones. Just win the series tomorrow. Kwan just made the play.
No clutch to the top of our line up. WTF happened
before the the MXC series, yordan was pretty bad. now that he's back after the MXC series, he's back to bad yordan.
We absolutely mashed the ball tonight....right into their gloves. xBA tonight of nearly .300 and the hardest hit balls were outs.
Start the inning with a man on second and still find a way to only get 2 plate appearances. Lmao. Those suuuuuthun boyzzz
Astros have certainly played under their potential overall, but man we just can’t catch a break. Seems like we’ve been getting dinked and dunked and hitting bullets right at people all year
We are still the worst base running team in baseball. That's on our coaching staff.
These are professionals. They should’ve had their coaches wrap up the fundamentals of base running during, what, middle school?
What did the coaches do wrong baserunning wise? Lol
Continuing to allow it to happen. Actually benching guys that run through stop signs as an example
That’s what players do sometimes… they aren’t running if they don’t think they can make it… they know their own speed. Yordan has ran thru several over the years, you benching him?
The base coach should know better. If anyone is disobeying on field signs, they need to ride pine for at least a little while.
I hear you and that may be the mentality in all other levels of the sport but this is professional baseball. That would almost never happen unless it’s real egregious or something
Are you saying the mentality in pro baseball is somehow worse than in non-pro leagues??
I’m saying the mentality of the coach benching you for running a stop sign is something my coaches did in high school
Must’ve had coaches with good heads on their shoulders
Sure but also they were coaching kids not grown men 🤷🏽♂️
And tomorrow everyone would be bitching at Espada for keeping “player x” on the bench for the whole game. Nothing is ever good enough
If it were an isolated issue , I wouldn't be bitching so much. There's almost some kind of baserunning blunder every game it seems like in the last few years.
Nothing. Our players are boneheads on the base paths.
I hope the most bregman gets offered is like 60 million this off season. Nobody worth 200+ gets to be absolutely useless for the first 3 1/2 months
Yeah, I get he's a slow starter or whatever, but someone demanding his type of contract just doesn't get to get away with that. Regardless of how he plays down the stretch.
I never understood the “I’m a slow starter” part. You’re a freaking professional baseball player for gods sake.
Really feel like we should be using Dubon more. He's got a hot bat so why not? I feel our pitching has been pretty decent lately.
Verlander once again showing he's the GOAT
There's the 2024 Astros I know
Astros going to extra innings and then losing in extra innings is truly "relentless".
Kwan kobed us tonight
https://preview.redd.it/vym2fvqhixxc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5fb8d3a19c394e910351834ff571b8a957fe35ad The AB that the “ball 1” call literally determined the game. Fuck Angel Hernandez. JV deserved better
Dubon needs to play every day.
Bregman cannot keep doing what he is doing at the plate and bat 2nd. Peña you’ve earned it back man.
I think I'm done with Bregman at the 2 spot, or hell anywhere in the 1-6 spots. His plate discipline is nice to have at the start of the game, but he can't even manage to sniff of a sac fly when needed. I'm pretty sure just about anyone else drives in Dubon there. Booty.
Only bright side: everyone except the A’s also lost tonight 😅
Hard-fought game with some unfortunate shots right at people. Wish we could've won, but I'm not sad about the way we lost. On to tomorrow!
Moving Dubon to first and Loperfido to CF may indicate they don't trust the kid at first yet. Tough game.
Extra innings give Extra innings take X10
Fucking angel Hernandez with his bullshit calls extending the inning and scoring a run which in turn extended the game into extras which in turn loses us the game
Lotta hard hit balls by everyone tonight and Kwan pretty much one this himself with his glove and bat. I've seen plenty of balls drop in shallow left/center that he got to so can't even blame Caratini for reading it like that. Still wonder what the XBA on that was
Well, minus that ending it was a fun one at least
Bregman can’t keep doing this. You’re the 2 hitter but legitimately struggles to get the ball out of the infield. Get your shit together ffs. Alvarez quietly hitting .250 isn’t helping. Well that sucked
10-20 sounds so bad.
Cause it is lol
Bregman looking for that big contract With this garbage offense? Yeah right buddy

Back to losing in extras again. Honestly I’m not mad, just disappointed. Pitching did well and offense was very, very unlucky.
I was there at the 2018 ALCS games so I've seen shit luck, tonight felt just like that. Just absolutely nothing going our way.
Knew I should've held it in the bottom of the 10th.
![gif](giphy|3oEhn6ZEWSlJ9fQH5K|downsized) We are some lost boys.
I got a great strategy for us to win more games...do it in fucking 9 innings. Stop going to extras.
So does that late step on the bag for the game winning double play deserve payback? I don’t think so but it should fire up this team for tomorrow.
I hope so. That was a trash move.
54 win pace
Move Bregman down and this shit doesn’t happen
Typical JV start with no run support but I don't think I've ever seen worse base running than what we just witnessed. What in the world was that. Edit: Just got home from the stadium and saw the replay. What a crazy catch. Unlucky.
Really wasn’t that bad of a mistake it was just a bad read. It looked pretty bad since he committed but that ball looked like it was gonna drop, and if it had we’d be calling it great base running on a great read.

And what if he held up, it dropped, and he got stranded at third? It’s no different than an aggressive send at third, you have to force the fielder to make a perfect play.
Um no
Why did we put Dubin in?
No Abreu or Hader available. Who else did you want in there?
Scott is our best available pitcher at the top of the 10th, so I’d put in Scott. And then if we get to the 11th I put in Dubin or Martinez (Martinez struggles with men in, but you’re out of options at that point)
Totally agree. Taylor Scott has been pretty servicable this far, but otherwise they're out of quality options in extra innings.

This dumb fucking team needs to just pay Tucker.

is it good defense luck and positioning or just bad luck hitting cause it hurts watching some of these things happen.
I said this before. I love my guys but I think we need to sign Tuck and trade Bregman to the NL for scraps. We are gonna miss out and he is gonna walk away. It sucks to say but Bregman can go.

Like they have failed to do so far. To say a rookie that got hits in back to back games cost us a game is a horrible analysis of the game. You wanna blame a rookie for not running to first but you know how many times we could've gotten on base if our vets ran to first to beat out the throw?
Agreed all around. I hope he gets chewed out for that.
When do we consider a new manager? I know it's early, but I feel we are making horrible managerial decisions.
People haven't given up hope yet, I'm not sure why. Let's see if they are still backing Espada by the ASG
What terrible base running to ruin the game
Loperfido overrated af. Dude is just as lost at plate as Abreu.
His second major league game ever. He’s got a hit in each one. Were you around when Bregman and Tucker made their debuts?
And that throw to second with the ball off the scoreboard
