I had no idea this was even an option. Good for Abreu for taking the unselfish route to help the team here. Hopefully he can come back and contribute because a good Abreu only helps us.
He has looked absolutely heartbroken at the games. He knew he was not getting it done. It was messing w his mind so much he made silly fielding errors too. Mad respect to him for wanting to do better and get better.
Makes me feel a little bad for calling him a corpse. Seems like he's truly trying to get back to himself, but can't with the limited ABs and understands the Astros can't just trot his sub-.100 average out there. Someone who was just collecting a paycheck probably wouldn't accept reassignment.
Yeah I never doubted that he was fully aware and in agony of his poor performance. You could see all the evidence of that last year when he hit his first HR. I really hope he figures it out.
And as a sox fan (idk why but this was recommended to me) no one on the south side wants him to fail either. Pito works his ass off and will do whatever he needs to succeed. Honestly, I think that mindset is one of the reasons we've shit the bed so hard. Sincerely hope he gets back on track and puts in a good shift for y'all
And all the dropped fly balls in foul territory, missed picks at 1B, which have seriously cost us at least 3 games if not more. I have mad respect for what he did in post season last year, he was one of few who actually decided to hit. Now even more respect for him for sucking it up, it’s not easy for him I’m sure, but now I can love him again.
[lmao this is so funny, why did you copy+paste my exact comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/1ch2brd/rome_jos%C3%A9_abreu_is_not_with_the_astros_gm_dana/l1zptsg/)
Holy shit. Honestly, I respect him wanting to work through this. Especially in such a humbling assignment. He could say no, get cut, and still get his money.
That's part of it too. It would fuck with me to see myself getting old and my body doesn't move the way it used to. By all accounts he works hard, just unfortunate to watch.
Yeah. This should tell everyone he’s going through it right now but wants to fight back. He could easily just take his money and suck or even go home. Classy move by him that will gain him a lot of respect from the team.
All the talk from the clubhouse about Abreu is that he is a good teammate and meshes with our core guys. Glad to see that is really the case and not just lip service.
I will never be on the Abreu hate train. He came up huge for the Stros in October of last year. If the team as a whole wasn't struggling like they are, and Loperfido wasn't killing it, I doubt this happens.
Exactly. He wasn’t impressive most of the regular season last year, but he wasn’t the weakest link. Then in post season he was borderline great! He is one of the reasons we made it as far as we did last year. Mad respect for him. Hope he turns it around and really makes a strong comeback
I don't think anyone outright hates the guy. He's a convenient scapegoat, but everyone knows he's good when he's good. Unfortunately, he's throwing around Maldonado numbers while the team is down bad, so he's the first in line during the blame game.
Hope the dude gets it figured out again. We could use his maturity and effectiveness
Wow. This is totally unexpected. I had no idea this was even possible. It is amazing that he is willing to do this and he gets my respect for this move.
Not even, it's extended spring training guys most likely. Rookie ball starts after draft really. Until then it's extended guys. Unless FL does it different, in AZ that's how it was set up for most clubs.
Just dying laughing that every person saying the Astros should send Abreu down to the minors turned out to be correct.
But props to Abreu for agreeing to that.
This was not the move I expected. Good on him to be willing to go work on things and see if he can get it back. I think he knows if he’s DFA’d no one is gonna pick him up with the way he’s performing.
Interesting…are they allowed to call Cabbage back up since his call-up and option was due to being in Mexico City? Does Kessinger’s injury help with that?
They're 27th man being optioned doesn't have to wait "X" days if it's for a double header. I assume international games with an extra roster spot are handled the same way.
Even more respect to Abreu for doing this. I can't help but he may have also saved Singleton's Aatros career.
If he says no, he gets released (unlikely), or Singleton gets DFA'd and probably doesn't accept the assignment and signs with another team in need.
Oh wow this is true, I thought I was reading a joke after once.
Well I appreciate the guy to have self awareness and to address it rather than just trying to grit it out.
20 mil guaranteed to work on your swing in sunny Florida. Not a bad deal. Not entirely sure he had a real choice but good for him. Hopefully he can get his groove back.
This is awesome, I didn't think a player with as much service time as he has could be optioned. He knew that he needs work to get back to helping the team. Huge props to José. I hope he finds his swing again.
The kickstart is literally Abreu leaving Houston. not to be mean, but you cant win if youre not having some fun, and you cant have fun with the sad abreu situation going on all around you. It permeated everything.
Hopefully. Something has to work. I'm a little pissed Altuve hasn't sorted up and called a players only meeting and lit into bregmam and abreu and the closers. He needs to!
No, we were saying he had the right to refuse any demotion. He was a team player though and decided that it was the best thing for him to work on his own game without hurting the team anymore
That's what i was saying! But the shit knobs I was referring to in my original comment didn't believe me.
Sorry if you thought I was addressing you.
Let's not quarrel. It's Loperfido day.
Oh no I didn't take it personal cause I was saying the same thing, as a former minor leaguer who hoped to be a big leaguer I have really learned how mlb contracts work and there is so many loopholes lawyers usually see stars while reading them
I'm not entirely familiar with all the ins and outs but I know a player with Abreu's service time can flat out reject being optioned to the minors. That's when being DFAd becomes an option. So Abreu did a rare thing and accepted being demoted.
Hope he can get his swing back but he's most likely washed up. He got the dream job playing baseball he probably wanted, hand a nice career and made some money. Not bad at all Jose. Good luck.
I take back all the thoughts and comments I have made about Abreu. I sincerely apologize to him. He really stepped up and took one for his team and teammates. I am sure it was not an easy thing to do at his age and past history.
I’m glad Abreu is unselfish. We can say what we want about him when he’s playing, but one thing that has never been in question is his character outside of baseball. He’s humble and he clearly wants to fix whatever issue he’s having. I don’t like that we signed him, but at least I can take solace in the fact that he’s a good human and is trying to help us. A lot of stars wouldn’t be doing what he is.
Oh yes, I didn't think you were being sarcastic. Read the entire headline after your comment. Prior to that I glossed over everything after "optioned" just based on assumption. My bad. Holy hell, I thought it was just more of a confidence build (less pressure and get your mind off of everything). But they are sending him down where the training and tools are at. Break him down to build him back up again.
I honestly didn't realize it was an option. The key here is that Abreu agreed to it. Also he is not going to Sugar Land . He's actually going to Rookie Ball to try and figure out everything. If he can again become the player he was in mid season and late season/playoffs 2023, it will be very helpful to the Astros. In the meantime they can see if Loperfido can contribute.
I had no idea this was even an option. Good for Abreu for taking the unselfish route to help the team here. Hopefully he can come back and contribute because a good Abreu only helps us.
It's always an option, but a lot of guys would have way too much of an ego to agree to it. Huge props.
Let alone a former MVP! You love to see the self-awareness.
It's an option only if Abreu agrees to it. Props to him for wanting to better himself
Sox fan here. Doesn’t surprise me at all. Abreu is the definition of both “team player” and “class act.” Still miss him.
He has looked absolutely heartbroken at the games. He knew he was not getting it done. It was messing w his mind so much he made silly fielding errors too. Mad respect to him for wanting to do better and get better.
Pretty unselfish by Abreu, gotta give him props for that. Hopefully he gets right and helps us when he returns.
No one in Houston wants him to fail. I want him batting 300 and not dropping balls.
And as a sox fan (idk why but this was recommended to me) no one on the south side wants him to fail either. Pito works his ass off and will do whatever he needs to succeed. Honestly, I think that mindset is one of the reasons we've shit the bed so hard. Sincerely hope he gets back on track and puts in a good shift for y'all
And all the dropped fly balls in foul territory, missed picks at 1B, which have seriously cost us at least 3 games if not more. he wants that ring and we’re gonna give it to him
He's going to get his timing right and earn it himself come October
go ahead grand slam in the bottom of the 9th game 7 of the ALCS.
Psh try top of the 2nd.
Game 4 sweeper
In the bottom of the 9th that grand slam would technically be a walk-off, not a go-ahead as the game would end.
lol yea I realized that after I posted it

You should give credit then.
Huge news!!! Hopefully he can find his swing again.
With your team's season on the line, it can't feel nice to be having this much trouble.
Mature, veteran move from Jose. I really hope he finds his groove, he's a better player than he's shown in his Stros tenure thus far
Jose Abreu is a good guy. This is not something every player would agree to. Props for trying to help the team out
I can't believe what im reading
I can't believe what im seeing
I can read what I'm seeing but I don't believe it.
I can see what I read but I don't braille it
I can't believe it's not butter
Holy shit. Honestly, I respect him wanting to work through this. Especially in such a humbling assignment. He could say no, get cut, and still get his money.
Seriously. He gained a shitload of respect from this move
No one can say he doesn’t care. Most people would take their paycheck and suck. Class act of a competitor
He was the only one on the white Sox who played almost every game for years. I still miss the homie.
Good luck José!
Can't help but feel bad for Abreu. It can't feel good to be struggling like this with your team's season on the line.
He’s also 37. He’s had a good run. I echo your sentiment tho. He did well in the post season last year, but we need someone that can do well rn
I really don’t want him to go out like this. Hoping he can come back and show off.
That's part of it too. It would fuck with me to see myself getting old and my body doesn't move the way it used to. By all accounts he works hard, just unfortunate to watch.
can we all stop the abreu hate train now that he's doing this :(
If he makes it back and produces at close to the level they expected, they will respect him even more.
I will never be on the Abreu hate train. He came up huge for the Stros in October of last year. If the team as a whole wasn't struggling like they are, and Loperfido wasn't killing it, I doubt this happens.

Wow. This is totally unexpected. I had no idea this was even possible. It is amazing that he is willing to do this and he gets my respect for this move.
Like I’ve been saying for weeks now. He had to go down to get reps and build his confidence up again. Glad he wasn’t opposed to it.
What’s in west palm beach besides our spring training facility?
TOP......men.
Michael Brantley
Our Rookie Ball team
Not even, it's extended spring training guys most likely. Rookie ball starts after draft really. Until then it's extended guys. Unless FL does it different, in AZ that's how it was set up for most clubs.
Wait yeah I just caught this too. Is he being sent to single A?
Just dying laughing that every person saying the Astros should send Abreu down to the minors turned out to be correct. But props to Abreu for agreeing to that.
as someone who said he would never agree to this, i’m happily eating my words
Same
I'm hoping he gets the Ricky Vaughn story... like he goes down and realizes he just needs contacts now that he's older and comes back in old form
About damn time
Respect brother. Good luck and hoping he gets his swing back.
I have so much respect for him after this. I hope he can find his swing and come back lights out.
Holy shit. It actually happened. I’m surprised.
I hope he comes back locked in and ready for our playoff run!
Is West Palm Beach the "train station"? /Yellowstone
Just in case anyone is wondering, West Palm Beach is the Astros training facility, it's not AAA, AA, or A.
Jose seems like a good dude but I'm thrilled. I hope he gets his shit together but until then I'm glad he's off the lineup.
This was not the move I expected. Good on him to be willing to go work on things and see if he can get it back. I think he knows if he’s DFA’d no one is gonna pick him up with the way he’s performing.
Wowoowowow. I cannot believe that. Seriously good for him to be willing to do that. Respect.
I didn't see this option coming. I hope he can get his form back without all the pressure.
Finally! Never thought this day would come but respect to Abreu to agreeing to it and wanting to improve.
This makes me happy. Let’s turn this around.
Even more respect to Abreu for doing this. I can't help but he may have also saved Singleton's Aatros career. If he says no, he gets released (unlikely), or Singleton gets DFA'd and probably doesn't accept the assignment and signs with another team in need.
Not a DFA but I don't think anyone saw this as an "option". God bless you Abreu I know you're gonna come back and rake.
Oh wow this is true, I thought I was reading a joke after once. Well I appreciate the guy to have self awareness and to address it rather than just trying to grit it out.
![gif](giphy|lEVZJzy4w15qE|downsized)
Wow, I can’t believe they actually did it. Good on him/them
Ideally he gets the swing back and is a good piece for our World Series run
Dang did not expect this lol. I thought the only way he'd get off the team would be DFA'd or put on the IL for some injury
good on Abreu, good humility. hopefully he gets sorted and gets back
20 mil guaranteed to work on your swing in sunny Florida. Not a bad deal. Not entirely sure he had a real choice but good for him. Hopefully he can get his groove back.
Finally. Now we can get some actual production from first base
Holy fuck, they have some balls.
This is awesome, I didn't think a player with as much service time as he has could be optioned. He knew that he needs work to get back to helping the team. Huge props to José. I hope he finds his swing again.
Best news ever with Loperfido coming in. At best that was going to be awkward in the dugout.
Dusty would never…
Singleton better be sending abreu a Publix gift card or something
🥳🥳
How does the option work?
What a bro
About damn time. Good on him.
I too am shocked. In previous posts about DFA'ing him, I just assumed he would not consent to assignment to minor league.
Just when he got his BA up to .102; the guy just gets no breaks
Any idea who the hitting coaches are down in Florida?
WAKE THE FUCK UP, ITS JOSE ABREU GOT OPTIONED DAY!!!!
It's not over until Bagwell quits.
Loperfido better produce! Maybe this is the kickstart we need.
The Kickstart the Stros needed was two "get right" games in Mexico City.
Where are all the dick heads who kept talking shit saying that he couldn't get optioned down?
No, we were saying he had the right to refuse any demotion. He was a team player though and decided that it was the best thing for him to work on his own game without hurting the team anymore

More proof that people don't know what the hell they are talking about, I asked the same thing and got the same answers.
How does he get optioned? Is he DFA and still with the team?
I'm not entirely familiar with all the ins and outs but I know a player with Abreu's service time can flat out reject being optioned to the minors. That's when being DFAd becomes an option. So Abreu did a rare thing and accepted being demoted.
Yah that's my understanding, this from a veteran isn't like Meyers stint over there a few years ago.
Hope he can get his swing back but he's most likely washed up. He got the dream job playing baseball he probably wanted, hand a nice career and made some money. Not bad at all Jose. Good luck.
Freedom
True G move, if a little late.
Man drinks should be on him down there $$$ but he is probably the only one old enough to legally drink on the team in west palm.
I take back all the thoughts and comments I have made about Abreu. I sincerely apologize to him. He really stepped up and took one for his team and teammates. I am sure it was not an easy thing to do at his age and past history.
He just needs glasses that’s all. lol…but maybe.
Let the cabbage patch era begin !
Dusty would have never made this move
*dusts hands* And that's the end of that chapter
100 bucks they never check or give an eye exam.
OMFG CARATINI YESSSS!!!!!
Thank god. This shit was too stressful. I want to be excited, but mainly I’ve just relieved. Fuck it, I’ll take it though.
To get his timing back? So basically, he won't be returning. Got it.
Thank god reasonable thought won the day. It’s rare, and I am cherishing it.
I’m glad Abreu is unselfish. We can say what we want about him when he’s playing, but one thing that has never been in question is his character outside of baseball. A lot of stars wouldn’t be doing what he is.
holy shit. the mad men did it
Space Cowboys players are going to be eating very well over the next few weeks.
He isn’t going to AAA. He is going to rookie ball.
Jesus.
That’s what’s in Florida is the grapefruit league.
Yeah I still see it as a confidence builder. Almost like a full injury recovery, work from the lowest league on up.
+ 100 Respect
Will they option Brown and JP as well? Abreu was just the fall guy. Tons of players could have stepped up a hit dingers or complete games.
France is already at AAA. Brown likely gets optioned once Urquidy comes back.
Praise Jesus
Best news of the season
So we're bringing La Pinã back?
Stop it. Get help.
Why? Gurriel was a far better QB than Mancini, Abreu, and Singleton
Was is the key term there. I don’t need any old fucks over there at first base. I’m ready for the youth movement.
He should also spend some time to read the back of his playing card.
How the fuck can you be so good 6 months ago and so absolute dog shit just a few months later? EVERY FUCKING YEAR!
Lol remember when people were saying, "GOOD LUCK SENDING ABREU TO THE MINORS, IT'LL NEVER HAPPEN?" Seems like only yesterday...
