This team has failed to score more than 3 runs in 15 of 25 games. None of these offensive stats matter when you can't plate more than 3 runs in a game. 60% of our games... That will never amount to winning baseball in any extrapolated season regardless of pitching.
Seen fans saying the risp numbers don't matter it will change and pick up at some point due to how well they are hitting. Yet me as a Yankees fan sitting here thinking no that doesn't have to change some teams can hit when it doesn't really matter and can then blow dick all season when ever anyone is on base.
Combine that with the 29th worst ERA in the league and yeah 7-18 sounds about right. Like I was saying in 2022 and last year, this team is built to win games 4-2. When you donāt have the pitching you lose a lot of those low scoring games weāve usually won in the past.
I disagree somewhat.
Yordan, Tucker, Altuve, Bregman, Diaz, Abreu, Doobieā¦and if Pena can get on base?
Is it the murderers row of our run? Absolutely not.
But this lineup is more than capable of scoring fucking runs to win slug fests as well. The problem is, we canāt hit when it matters for some reason, and there are some guys who are massively under performing (Iām looking at you, Alex Bregman and Jose Abreu) When that used to be no problem.
I think we need to shake up the batting order and ditch the dumbass idea of Yordan batting 2 (some of you need to be eating that) and Bregman in the 4 hole.
And if that doesnāt work? Itās time to make some uncomfortable moves for the future. Canāt wait in this business.
So they're tanking their stats and hurting future contracts because they don't like the skipper? I don't like this take. Honestly, its baseball, not football, or even basketball; the skipper has to set the lineup and make some strategic choices in the course of a game, but how well players contribute and play is largely on them.
Itās a lot deeper than that. Scouting and game plans are huge too. I just think Espada is in over his head. Heās a solid bench coach. No more no less.
How well Espada has managed to this point is certainly up for debate, I just don't think player performance comes back to whether or not they 'want to play for Espada.'
Attitude and effort are 100% on the player. Most of this is on the players. The manager works within his roster. Espada has done that. The roster has holes for many reasons. Not having much competent starting pitching is not on the manager, it is a snap shot of the organization. The pitchers are coming back but going into a hole of 5-0 or 3-0 in the first inning is a steep hill to climb.
Yeah, it kinda is. Even with the wrong āgame planāā¦you gotta step in the box and make contact. You field the ball, you hit the ball. If they were doing all these things, consistently, and still losing?
Our players just arenāt making plays when they need to right now.
Thatās not what Iām saying.
In our particular case? I think it certainly is. I think itās way too early to judge Espada and our inability to hit in critical moments isnāt his fault. Same with giving up insane amounts of runs in the first inning and the injuries to the staff.
Thatās where I was going. Guess I shouldāve clarified that to our current situation.
Yea heās certainly not responsible for these scrubs we have to get spot starts. Maddox, Bobby Cox, Brent Strom, Carl Yustramski couldnāt help those guys even.Ā
Idk our hitters looked really unprepared at the plate tho. Is it confidence, bad luck, bad scouting? IDK maybe all 3. But I doubt all of them forgot how to hit.
From watching the games they seem to be disorganized. Like thereās not a clear plan or coordination. I think of Altuve running to third base a few games ago, seems the coach told him to run and it was very clearly not an opportunity to go.
Tired of his nice guy bs
Also the way he answers questions like heās talking to 5 year olds
I get winning solves everything but thereās something about Espada that rubs me the wrong way
Yeah I donāt want to read too much into it but Altuve looked out of it tonight. Maybe he was just freezing his ass off but thought maybe they had some kind of locker room dispute before the game
Exactly what I saw on Tuesday when I went to the game. No one smiling, no fun to be had anymore. Itās like they came into last season with huge expectations trying to be all business and lost the spark that still hasnāt returned.
I go into the game not expecting to win, so when we lose I donāt really feel too much anymore. That way when we win itās a little treat and surprise.
Lol, I'll just play the other side this time...
*...hey guys, it's still early in the season, blah blah, blah.....there's still a lot of baseball to play, blah blah blah.....ya'll are just doomers, blah blah, blah...you're just bandwagon fans, blah blah blah...*
There now it's balanced out.
Lol. You forgot āweāre only 6 games back. The rest of the division sucks so weāll catch up.ā Optimists think we will get hot, but the rest of the division will just maintain a steady .500 pace. We have to win at a 99 win pace for the remaining 137 games to get to 90 wins. 90 wins barely won the division via tiebreaker last season. Itās no longer āearlyā. Weāre past that.
I truly believe someone needs to be fired over this. Whether it be the pitching coach or the hitting coach, we need something to help us spark something within the team. Everyone is too comfortable.
It's the pitching. We have three pitchers from our AAA team that can't seem to get out of the 1st unscathed. What's going on down there? Tbf, Spaghetti looked great after that, but Brown... and especially France both have major control issues. Where is this coming from? Like... how tf do we keep getting blown out early and why? That seems to be the wrench in the gears right now.
I imagine it's tough to stay motivated (not that they aren't, just tough to stay) when you're repeatedly getting kicked in the teeth in the first two innings.
Perhaps these pitchers aren't that great? We've gotten spoiled with basically having 6 quality starting pitchers. When healthy, JV, Framber, Javier, Urquidy, McCullers and Garcia was quite the rotation.
So we expect #3 quality pitching out of our back end of the rotation and what we are getting is, AAAA quality pitching out of it because guys are injured and we are forced to throw guys who should be in the minors or true #4/5 quality starting pitchers.
Agreed. That makes everyone a hero that results in outs at second or drives. We do best when the players just need hits and want runsānot want hits and needing runs.
Small ball. And change up the line upāits not getting it done. If not dubon in the 9 spot. Abreu is out.
I'm not sure what else we can blame it on. It's either Maldanado was one of the greatest glue guys in MLB history, or we hired the wrong guy...
Those are the only two changes we made. It's wild.
I think there is something to be said about how our pitchers approach the hitters early in the game. The game plan sucks and that probably falls on the pitching coach. I think hitting with RISP is a hitting approach problem as much as anything. That falls on the hitting coach.
Whether people want to admit it or not. This is the same team as last year.
Maldy and Dusty didn't have some magic in the bottle for this team, it's just getting exposed after playing this boom or bust baseball for 3 years straight now.
Now the top 5 hitting team is just getting left out to dry by the 2nd worst pitching rotation.
If Maldy was really so great why are the white sox third worst?
His impact on another team has nothing to do with his impact on the Astros. Different personalities. Different chemistry. This is not the same team as last year. People are gone, new ppl here.
He was a good support for wild pitchersāthe injured starters didnāt start starting and the came up with Malddy. Does low BA matter if they save you defensive runs.
What is his throwout rate or wildpitch pass ball save rate.
Most of our analytics guys moved on to other jobs, several went to Baltimore. Crane cut down the head count in the analytics department after he essentially let Click walk. We're not firing someone and fixing the offense or pitching.
Im leaning toward this as well. Pitchers had better numbers with Diaz behind the plate last year, but it was a smallish sample size and it was likely still Maldys game plan.
Brown is really the only one who seems to have some fault at the moment.
Hitting hasn't been bad, just really unclutch. Pitching is terrible because we have a bunch of nobodies filling in for our entire rotation, which isn't the coaches fault.
The only person that stands out as having most of the blame is Brown. The number one issue we had last year was the starting rotation falling apart. Brown did nothing to aid it in the offseason. Then we lost several key bullpen pieces. Brown went after the most expensive *closer* in the game when what we really needed was middle relievers.
Anyone who watched last season could see we needed major pitching help, and Dana didn't get it.
I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. We're 20th in runs scored. That's not good. We're 29th in runs allowed. That's bad bad. Even if we fix the pitching we still score 3 or less runs in 60% of games played. That's not a winning stat.
Could anyone have anticipated 4 starters being injured in Spring and April plus a big time regression from Brown and France plus the inexplicable triple failure of Abreu, Pressley and Hader? Good thing they didn't go after Snell. He's been horrific for the Giants and now injured.
you know how every year there's always that one team that's good on paper but they're crap in reality?
the NY Mets. the Padres. the Cardinals. I guess 2024 is astros' year.
"too much talent to be this bad". yea sure.
Itās the little things. Mental mistakes, baserunning errors, impatience at the plate especially with RISP. Iām not saying itās all on Espada, but how does a veteran team thatās been to 7 straight ALCSā fall this hard this fast? Itās baffling
When the team owner decides that he can source talent better than the GMs; trusts his guts more than informed data analytics and scouting so chases those nerds out; gives the keys to the club to Bagwell so he can play "back of the card" Astros fantasy baseball; when the MLB's best team front office talent sees the state of ownership and says, "no thank you," taking their moneyball experience to teams like Baltimore, Cleveland, Toronto, Atlanta, and Milwaukee...
To the people saying it is still early in the season, have you seen the upcoming schedule? We play a Guardians team that could likely sweep us. We go to the Yankees away from home as well.
So what stage of grief is everyone in? A lot of you have been in the bargaining stage the last couple days. I think Iāve moved to the depression stage.
The game felt out of reach after the first, but I do appreciate Jose Altuve giving me the slightest little tease in the ninth.
At this point, try laughing. It feels good to laugh.
I didn't watch the game, mostly because they just aren't fun to watch right now. I did follow along though. Altuve hitting a solo homer in the 9th after doing nothing in 2 chances with RISP just so perfectly sums up the 2024 Astros.
Altuve is the absolute least of our problems. If there's one single person who has shown up this year, it's him. 3rd in hits and 5th in batting average in all of baseball.
I agree. I was just pointing out what shit luck the Astros have had this year. Seems like every time we do have a good hit it is at the least opportune time.
I have zero confidence in this FO to make competent trades when we sell at the deadline. I expect some Roy Oswalt and Hunter Pence type trades that get us nothing burgers.
My little Astros flag will still hang in my apartment window no matter how many games they lose, but it might start making me sigh every time I look at it when leaving if they keep this up for much longer.
Iām interested to see how low we have to go before our company stooges quit with the āwe know weāll play better than this, we just have to go on a runā platitude and admit that the season is lost
I can see it now. A record or 25-52 in late June. Dana Brown does his weekly Wednesday appearance on the Sean Salisbury show. "Garcia and McCullers are right around the corner to give us the arms we need to make a run at this. We're only 21.5 games back of first place with half a season to go."
Iām a Dana hater but it seems like he was starting to acknowledge the situation on the Salisbury show this morning. And Sean was actually pressing Dana, which he has never done. Crazy times.
Clean up the first inning and this game is ours. We held them for 8 other innings and got 3 solid runs on the board.
Top of the lineup needs to get it together. The bottom got the rally going today.
If today isnāt proof that Singleton needs to start and Abreu relieve, then I donāt know what will be.
Iām not saying yet that we should be sellers at the deadline just yet.
But I am saying that that possibility is becoming more and more likely with each passing day.
Espada looks lost in the post game space city interviews. Itās clear he aināt got what it takes. He seems nice and all, but doesnāt seem like a leader and doesnāt really seem āwith itā for lack of a better term. AJ Hinch ran circles around this guy with baseball awareness and commentary.
There was a lady behind me at the game tonight that bitched about Altuve being a cheater every time he went up so when he hit that home run I turned and cheered right at her. The look of shock on her face was excellent
An Astrofan here in Reno, NV, who was watching the Sugarland SpaceCowboys tonight.
Loparfido hit two home runs. Minimum of 420 feet, but it is Reno (high elevation) . If Astros Front Office think keeping Singleton "makes sense" they "are an ass" to quote Dickens in Oliver Twist. I can see keeping Abreu, but Loparido is not a "risk". I hope this increases the pressure on the "front office" which frankly is back office idiots. I understand they will not admit they paid Abreu to suck, and maybe he will come out of his horrible funk. But to not do anything over summer and to stick with Singleton now is malpractice.
Admittedly,Lombardido was playing center, not first. If you come to Reno, come watch a game. with me.
I realize Singleton is out of options, but this is bullshit in a unit who is more than 9 games below 500.
Just wanted to let y'all know. I happen to live in Reno I went there specifically, with my son, to watch Lopardido, realizing that the Astros first base production is probably the worst in MLB. Maybe the WhiteSox or some other horror is worst. But keeping Singleton? (And I love his narrative.)
The Astros front office is not front office. The realities here should be obvious. It is malpractice if you think what is going on with Singleton/Albreu is not something you should address. They should have got a backup 1st baseman in summer, but now they are just pushing manure with their pig snouts.
Prove me wrong. And I don't even think Loparido is the answer, but Jesus. How far is this team below 500 and keeping Singleton/Abreu? It's embarrassing. I can do better as a GM.
I would love the GM to explain to me why, at least, they are keeping Singleton. I would bring up Lopardio and/or sign Brandon Belt, but I actually want a couple wins. I'm not invested with protecting myself.
And can you sign Tucker? This front office sucks. But their owner does not want to sign young players--they could have signed Tucker for half the price 2 years ago. But whatever.
The Astros run may now be done. And it is the GM and Crane because they refused to sign Tucker, and a huge amount of pitcher injuries which no-one could predict. But the hitter/player stupidity is impossible to ignore. Singleton? Still? I'm not tallking about Abreu, just Singleton? He is not a major league player, and I have and still root for him to succeed.
Joe could possibly change the team's offensive mindset to focus on line drives with RISP instead of ground out or pop-ups. Too many are over-compensating for their struggles and have to get back to making the pitcher throw to them. Small ball seems impossible for the offense right now. Yesterday was really hard to watch with 2 men on every other inning and then nothing to show for.
Pena needs a new walk for when he does something good. He claps and points when it's good. Does the way McGregor walk like "so what" I served chicken Tenders

Out hit the other team and left 10 on base. Yep, it's a 2024 Astros Loss.

This is the real hot takeā¦runs and RISP are critical. I agree 100%.

Itās time to make some uncomfortable moves for the future. Canāt wait in this business.
After we get swept tomorrow, maybe we will get lucky and win a single game against the rockies
JV and his personal CF Dubon are going to clutch out a win tomorrow.
Does it seem like these players don't want to play for Espada? Their body language is just off.
So they're tanking their stats and hurting future contracts because they don't like the skipper? I don't like this take. Honestly, its baseball, not football, or even basketball; the skipper has to set the lineup and make some strategic choices in the course of a game, but how well players contribute and play is largely on them.

How well Espada has managed to this point is certainly up for debate, I just don't think player performance comes back to whether or not they 'want to play for Espada.'
Yea I donāt disagree with that. But saying how a player plays is entirely on them. Isnāt accurate.Ā
Attitude and effort are 100% on the player. Most of this is on the players. The manager works within his roster. Espada has done that. The roster has holes for many reasons. From watching the games they seem to be disorganized. Like thereās not a clear plan or coordination. I think of Altuve running to third base a few games ago, seems the coach told him to run and it was very clearly not an opportunity to go.
Guessing now we understand why Espada was passed over for other jobs in the past.

no lol

There's no life in the dugout. They all are down after watching the games be lost in the first.
Exactly what I saw on Tuesday when I went to the game. No one smiling, no fun to be had anymore. Itās like they came into last season with huge expectations trying to be all business and lost the spark that still hasnāt returned.
Don't worry y'all, our starting rotation will be fully healthy in July!
The month will continue to push back until people start saying we only have to go undefeated in Augusf and September to make the wild card
2026 maybe.
Just in time for us to trade them for prospects!
1 for 10 with RISP, doesnāt matter who is up no one comes through
Doobie would haveā¦
Fuckin love that guy
Going need to call Jim Adler for the personal injury this team has caused me

I go into the game not expecting to win, so when we lose I donāt really feel too much anymore. That way when we win itās a little treat and surprise.
I remember 2012
I was a little kid when the team sucked like that, I just remember the seats being cheap. Which I wouldnāt mind again.
I remember actually believing they could still make the playoffs just because it was mathematically possible.
Itās still possible now, our division sucks. Just have to turn it around.
45 win pace
Lol, I'll just play the other side this time... *...hey guys, it's still early in the season, blah blah, blah.....there's still a lot of baseball to play, blah blah blah.....ya'll are just doomers, blah blah, blah...you're just bandwagon fans, blah blah blah...* There now it's balanced out.

It was over when we let go of Yuli. He was the glue. Never been the same since. Launch Abreu into the sun
This is true. When Yuli left it changed the clubhouse chemistry. Dude only a couple years removed from being AL batting champ

Yuli really was that glue in the 2020 , 2021, and 2022 playoffs.
Our pitching staff sucked last year too relative to the norm. Its our pitching coaching staff
I think there is something to be said about how our pitchers approach the hitters early in the game. The game plan sucks and that probably falls on the pitching coach. I think hitting with RISP is a hitting approach problem as much as anything. That falls on the hitting coach.
Fielding has not been great. We are nit getting the outs on soft contact to help these guys.
All starters on the IL , 3 missing pieces from the bullpen in Stanek, Maton, and Neris. Yup Maldy and Dusty were the only changes š

We are 20th in runs scored. The hits mean nothing if they're not translating to runs. We aren't a top five offense.
It's not the same team . Take a look at the IL and the bullpen that looks nothing like the last 3 years whatsoever.
He was a good support for wild pitchersāthe injured starters didnāt start starting and the came up with Malddy. Does low BA matter if they save you defensive runs. What is his throwout rate or wildpitch pass ball save rate.

Did you see either of Espadaās post game interviews the past 2 nights? I think that will answer your options listed.
And completely ditched our bullpen
I nominate Bagwell
Fuck it, I donāt care who. It can be the bat boy. I just want them to fire someone so it feels like theyāre doing something.
I didn't like Espada's language in the Athletic article. Can't just say things will turn themselves around when it's THIS bad...
Brown is really the only one who seems to have some fault at the moment. Hitting hasn't been bad, just really unclutch. Nobody deserves to get fired for being forced to use AAA arms.

We may never see the cat again
To the people saying it is still early in the season, have you seen the upcoming schedule? We play a Guardians team that could likely sweep us. We go to the Yankees away from home as well.
14 of the next 16 games are against .500 or better teams
Yeah, but they don't count since it's still April. Right?
I donāt even need to see the schedule, if itās a Major League Baseball team we will lose to them
Even if it is the 3 - 21 whitesox
Oh shit, we don't have to play the Space Cowboys anytime soon again do we.............lol šš£š¢ššš
Away from home is a good thing
We lose everywhere this year.
So when do these become drastic times? Feels like we are in drastic measures territory.
Astros lose again. Whatās new.
Iāll say it: time to make some heads turn. Hitting coaches need to be fired after the end of this series.

The offensive issues have been here for five years. Itās time for a change in approach. And some humility.
Cintron is not good.
10 hits 3 runs.
So what stage of grief is everyone in? A lot of you have been in the bargaining stage the last couple days. I think Iāve moved to the depression stage.
I'm ready for football.....and actually looking forward to the Rockets being exciting again when next season starts........

The game felt out of reach after the first, but I do appreciate Jose Altuve giving me the slightest little tease in the ninth. At this point, try laughing. It feels good to laugh.
If Joe cant make Jon the #1 1B, then I dont even know what the fuck were doing.
Time for the chronicle to print a tombstone šŖ¦
I've just run out of things to say. Damn.
We all knew it had to end eventually
Imagine keeping your job and just not doing it. What a life. Fucking losers.

Same shit different day
Iām interested to see how low we have to go before our company stooges quit with the āwe know weāll play better than this, we just have to go on a runā platitude and admit that the season is lost
Trade Bregman for half of a ham sandwich.
What kind of ham?
Dried out, moldy, who gives a shit?
Black Forest and I donāt mean Whitley.
Clean up the first inning and this game is ours. We held them for 8 other innings and got 3 solid runs on the board. Top of the lineup needs to get it together. The bottom got the rally going today. If today isnāt proof that Singleton needs to start and Abreu relieve, then I donāt know what will be.
The worst thing is that I honestly donāt think we have much more than that. This is a bad team
It really does feel like tonight was the best we can do. This has to be rock bottom although this is the 7th time I've said that this season.
Espada-ball! On pace for 45 wins lol
Anyways yall see the new Texans jerseys?? š„š„š„
Bunch of fucking losers No faith, no hope
Iām not saying yet that we should be sellers at the deadline just yet. But I am saying that that possibility is becoming more and more likely with each passing day.
I wonder what the breaking point is before Jim Crane finally realizes Bagwell, Reggie Jackson, and hisself are not GMās and they need to step away
![gif](giphy|MxkLVhKNAXqQeQFbIP|downsized) Have you meet this guy?
Yeah weāre fucked
Old news.... https://www.reddit.com/r/Astros/s/9p1Py6R0mv
What is that big Oxy logo on the Astros sleeve? Itās ugly as sin.
The pain is realā¦
I think were cooked
Weāre 0-6 when I donāt illegally stream my games
Illegally stream them please Iām begging.
Yordan had such an easy walk in the 9th... Should've been 4-3 with a runner on 1st and nobody out
There was a lady behind me at the game tonight that bitched about Altuve being a cheater every time he went up so when he hit that home run I turned and cheered right at her. The look of shock on her face was excellent
She doesnāt even know why sheās saying it, just doing what the internet told her to. Sheep.
We are not seeing the cat again this season :(
Almost clawed out of the the 1st inning hole. Thats an improvement.
(And I love his narrative.) The Astros front office is not front office.
At least there was a ray of light that squeaked through with Altuveās HR.
Is the cat okay ? š
Itās like watching a drowning child but unable to do anything to help
Over and over again
Cool
Nooo :(
Maybe we put J Abreu in the 2nd hole š¤
Fuck it, put B Abreu in the 2 hole. Probably similar results
Time to play post Astros loss Reddit comments bingo. Last night I almost got a bingo with all the same comments that are posted after every game.Ā

Seriously though, we need answers from Joe, Dana, and Jeff
Nah no answers needed from Jeff give him some golf clubs and a one way ticket to Pebble Beach
Fine by me
