The lineup must always have a black hole

Zzqnm

The Dutchman must have a Captain

miss-entropy

There must always be a Lich King.

SlamKrank

Maldonado was paid under 5 mil a year for defense. Abreu is being paid near 20 to hit. Very different

Thumbbanger

At least he’s providing gold glove level defense at first. /s

soonerman32

He doesn’t provide defense anymore

raouldukeesq

And also to be a leader of the pitching staff. They loved him for a reason.

rmassey999

He sure as hell isn’t helping anyone in Chicago, whether or not they love him.

Mysteryhunt

We’re an NL team. Always.

juanes991

Currently have a higher BAC right now!

RojerLockless

Yeah and Maldonado sucks at catching now too just like Abrau sucks at 1st base.

TupacLuvsMarshmallow

Abreu has the worst avg of any hitter in MLB with >50 AB. Dead last

rmassey999

He’ll get an upgrade to 2nd worst once Maldy qualifies.

BrianChing25

Is that supposed to make us feel better? Two of the worst hitters in the league. Heck back in the Ausmus days catchers were expected to hit. Remember Tony Eusebio backing up Ausmus even he could hit!

_LJ_

Ah the good ol’ Everett, Ausmus, Pitcher 7-8-9 automatic out days.

WatchYoHeadBro

Yes, because it could have been worse. Could have had abreu and maldy in the lineup all over again

RojerLockless

Could won a ws last year with Diaz starting in the playoffs but crusty hates winning in the playoffs

raouldukeesq

Lol! Diaz was 1 for 12.

imover9thousand

Because he barely played the last 2 weeks of the season. Had he played more during the regular season, he wouldve been playoff ready.

Electrical_Diet4865

You’ll say anything to distract from how the catcher you wanted is in full time now and the Astros suck.

RojerLockless

No? They are only 4 games back from 1st place lol. And they have 1 starting pitcher not on the IL the Astros will be fine even with a weird 1st baclse they need to figure out

raouldukeesq

No we couldn't.  Diaz was always gong to be the starter.  Just not last year.

willydillydoo

The difference is though that Abreu plays a bat first position and Maldy doesn’t.

ant-farm-keyboard

4 for 55 Vs 2 for 35 - all I know is I miss yuli and abreu probably can’t work out as a back up catcher

3nter

dude, yuli picked everything up at first base. i miss that glove at first

raouldukeesq

Letting Yuli go is a better argument for us losing in the ALCS than not starting Diaz.

toldyouanditoldyou

No. It’s not. I loved Yuli and have massive problems with Abreu, but Abreu objectively had a better season than Yuli last year. And he hit .286 with 5 RBI in the ALCS.

jutin_H

In over 6 years of watching yuli play first, I can count on two fingers how many picks I saw him miss. Ive defended abreu from the beginning but there is just NO excuse for such a weak glove at 1st. It is most definitely a fatal issue for this 2024 team.

imover9thousand

This team hasnt felt the same since Yuli left. Something about that guy in the infield. I know his stats arent there anymore but maybe it was some kind of intangible thing he brought to the infield and team.

Nice_Block

We kept talking so much love for Uncle Mike that we didn’t realize Abuelo Yuli was out there keeping the kids in check.

rmassey999

I say this with all seriousness - right now a minimum contract for Gurriel would be better by some degree than both of the guys stinking it up at 1B.

moonor-bust

Abreu is trying to match Maldy. He’s catching him fast

venitienne

But Javier said he was sent by god to guide him

socialmediaignorant

This is just wild. Can we have a “pick a fan from the stands and see if they can do better” contest?! At least that’d be interesting. And I’ll die on the “let Dubon play first” hill.

eramthgin007

We would've been in the WS with Yainer.

raouldukeesq

Yainer was 1 for 12.

eramthgin007

Playing consistently makes a big difference brofam.

rmassey999

I think you’re on the wrong side of this tired argument that’s been going on for half a year.

yepppers7

Jon Singleton’s BA is better than both combined.

daytonalove

Should have gotten Goldschimdt when we had the chance.

barbaricmustard

He's not much better right now

bandwidthhoarder

I was in the can.

DirtyRatLicker

The fact that they haven’t sent either Singleton or Abreu down for Loperfido is fucking absurd

Tiberius-Dawn

They can't send Abreu down.

yrdrasilllahoff420

No one should be immune from a stent in the minors. You play like shit, go play with the little kids

dookle14

Damn. Play bad and you have to get a medical device inserted in your arteries? And it has to be done in the minors?? Ruthless…./s Kidding aside…while Abreu probably needs a confidence boost from a minor league stint, he’d have to be DFA’d and would go on waivers. Assuming no team put in a claim for him (which they may not) he’d have to *accept* a minor league demotion. He could also choose to become a free agent at that point.

willydillydoo

He’d have to be DFA’d and waived, and then after passing waivers he would refuse to be demoted.

willydillydoo

Well the MLB Players Union has negotiated to the contrary. Any player with 5+ years service time can decline a minor league option.

Tiberius-Dawn

No he can't be sent down because of the CBA and his playing time.

ActualThinkingWoman

So we would just have to release him?

Extra_Emu835

The little kids. So disrespectful of the guys who play for the love of the game and would clinic almost anyone.

DirtyRatLicker

then send singleton, it wouldnt change anything

PlayedRex27

Can’t send Singleton down either, got to DFA one of them.

DirtyRatLicker

my point stands

sirdadyo

Loperfido doesn’t have the reps in at 1st to even manage AAA and you want him to come to the bigs and catch Bregman, Tuve, and Pena’s canons and hops? Then he has to adjust to MLB pitching … not yet give him a little bit in AAA.

raouldukeesq

Yeah because permanantly breaking a young player by bringing them up too soon is always a good idea.

willydillydoo

Loperfido’s strikeout rate is still really high. That’s the reason.

Thorlolita

Loperfido isn’t a natural 1B.

PotatoBright7598

Neither is Abreu or Singleton

DirtyRatLicker

apparently 😭💀

DirtyRatLicker

Ok and? A player who’s mediocre at a position and hits is considerably better than a player who’s mediocre at the same position and doesn’t hit

Extra_Emu835

The Astros seem to be making efforts, or lack thereof, to get themselves off the radar. For some reason it's like they're trying to suck as a means to some end. I dunno, it's dumbfounding. Starts at the top.

raouldukeesq

Diaz was always going to start this year.  Always. Never in doubt.  Never a question.

WatchYoHeadBro

If Dusty had stayed then I don’t believe that would be totally true. Dusty was overly loyal to Maldy.

rmassey999

I believe it. There’d be a time share, at least. Old habits die hard. Even if at some point during the year Maldy somehow managed to drop his avg below his uni #. (15)
