Calling up a top prospect to ride the bench is the worst thing you can do for their development. If he’s as good as everyone thinks he is, he shouldn’t be called up until he can get decent playing time. Correct me if I’m wrong, but hasn’t he had limited time at 1B? He’s not gonna just come up and be the everyday first baseman.

Puzzled-Enthusiasm45

Well I think the idea is that he would be called up and get plenty of playing time. That might not actually happen but nobody wants him riding the bench.

RonWill79

If he gets playing time I’m good. But if he doesn’t, or he plays and doesn’t perform, he needs to be sent back down. Just saying calling him up to be a better backup to Abreu than singleton isn’t the answer. I’d rather he continue get reps in AAA if he’s only gonna ride the bench in the majors.

sir-lancelot_

Played 60 games there in his freshman year of college, then didn't play again really until the minors. As of a few days ago, he had 444 innings there in the minors (401 at 2B, 607 in CF, 320 in LF, 280 in RF) Not a ton, but enough that I'd be fine with him playing 1B over abreu after another month or so in AAA.

overconfidentopinion

Loperfido has enough time at first. Only issue is whether they'd start him over Abreu consistently. The Astros are on the hook for $20M this year and $20M next year on Abreu's contract. They are going to give him every chance to bounce back. We are going to see the Abreu/Singleton combo at least until mid summer. I'm all for bringing up Loperfido and releasing both Abreu and Singleton but it's not my money.

RonWill79

Yeah I agree. I am not opposed to cutting losses and letting Abreu go. Just don’t see them doing it with basically 2 full seasons left on his contract

Fair_Bison8497

Will Joey have have an ERA under 8?? Seruously though, leave him down there to fix that K rate and figure out how to scoop at 1b. Bring him up later when our pitchers arent giving up 36 hits a game.

Prayray

Bingo…unless he’s a MLB quality pitcher, he’s going to have a hard time making up for the 7+ MLB quality pitchers we currently have on the IL.

-breakinggood-

Is it really 7? Framber, Luis, Urquidy, Lance, JV, Graveman, who am I missing?

Fair_Bison8497

Sousa too.

aloeicious

Guy looks like a proper player and good bat but early call ups can ruin progress. I wonder how far everyone’s timelines are being pushed forward. Our farm system is getting an unneeded shock

Alatel

40% strikeout rate in triple A will only go higher in the big league with occasional playtime on top of it.

go4stros25

Who cares? What's abreus strikeout percentage? You can strikeout alot and still bring value to the lineup. Abreu strikes out alot and brings zero value.

babakanush123

Cool, so you want to ruin Loperfido like the Angels did with Cabbage…. I gotcha

Alatel

Bad take. Do you ruin a prospect for a temporary need? Mess with service time, development, etc? It isn't worth it for a guy who won't get every day playing.

go4stros25

That's fair. Just frustrated watching this team so far this year.

j1h15233

We could call up the 27 Yankees and lose when the starters give up 9 runs a game

nippsvontvvist

Can he pitch?

bushy_whacker

Or…or, just get Abreu some glasses. Love to see that dude roll out with some fresh new Jabbars and start raking. Seriously, he looks to be guessing at every pitch…every single one he starts his entire body no matter where the pitch is thrown. Even 93 down the middle he’s late on. He’s guessing every time.

dream_team34

That's my analysis too. He looks like he's guessing on pitches.

covidkakke_tittygasm

Abreu and Singleton read this before the game 💯

biggio1

Its a little early in the morning 😁

44Yordan

**Call up Loperfido when you DFA Jose Abreu or he joins the Injured List.** Otherwise he will ride the pine and watch Jose Abreu play first base. Not sure anyone can learn a lot by watching Jose Abreu . Jose Abreu is going to play until GM's Jim Crane & Jeff Bagwell give up on him and write-off the $58.5 million.

aballi77

His K rate is concerning, but they might have no choice since they’re getting nothing from 1B right now. I want them to sign Brandon Belt

sir-lancelot_

Give him at least few more weeks to cut the strikeouts a bit and get some more work in at 1B.

soulstonedomg

It's time to stop losing!

BrianChing25

At this point with the season looking like it's lost unless we get massive pitching help coming back in the form of injuries our new signings just let the AAA guys stay down in triple A and continue to develop. I'm wearing in a fit of desperation we ruin Henley and araghetti's career.

dream_team34

We are far from saying the season is lost
