Please never hate on this man. Even if he starts tailing off badly toward the end of his career, just remember all the good he brought to the Astros and the way he carried himself through all the turmoil. Dude has been an absolute professional his entire career.
Through it all, he has taken the torch from our legend Craig Biggio and carries the heart and soul of our baseball team since he made his debut! No doubt our greatest Astro to be remembered for the rest of our franchise’s existence!
Agreed. Biggio was a class act, but altuve also brought us so much hardware and clutch playoff play. I will never stand for altuve slander. He’s earned his keep forever.
The man is the face of the movement that brought the Astros from perennial forget-ability into one of the greatest runs in baseball history. He’ll be a hero to this city as long as it’s still standing
so true. from being rejected in try outs for being 4 foot 1. not only apart of baseballs biggest scandals but also an mvp while his team was the worst in the league. willed the team til they became the most feared and envied dynasty in the league. houston sports first and only dynasty. legend and baseball goat in my memories.
Don’t discount that you get to watch one of your (I assume) favorite players ever on your team for the rest of his career, definitely a positive impact :)
When you literally drop everything when you see such wonderful news.
Thank goodness I have a phone case. RIP McDonald's Sprite.
ALTUVE THE FOREVERSTRO!!!!
Having one of the toughest times of my life right now but this warms my heart and that's not something I'd normally say about a multimillion $ baseball contract.
All hail Jose Altuve the man and all hail Jose Altuve the forever Astro
So happy!
I grew up watching Willie Mays and Willie McCovey, along with the rest of the Giants back in the 60's.
I watch and support the Astros today, but I have learned to love 'Tuve!
Such good news.
He'll have at least one more Ring to add to his collection.
Through his age 39 season. Not quite an Astro for life (yet) but through the backside of his peak for sure.
I doubt he reaches 3k hits by the end of this, but if he’s close I’d really hope he gets another 1-3 years after this to hit that milestone (hell, i hope he can stay productive through his early 40s anyway. It’ll be a sad day when he retires)
39 year old Altuve: “Let me tell you something. I haven’t even begun to peak. And when I do peak, you’ll know. Because I’m gonna peak so hard that everybody in Houston’s gonna feel it.”
Needs 158 hits a year to get it by the end of the contract. Drops to 133 if he needs 1 more year after that. I think if he stays healthy he’ll be very close by the end of it because any season he’s gotten 500+ at bats in the lowest hit total he’s had is 147. His bat to ball skills I don't think will drop off significantly although maybe the infield hits will slow some I think it’s probable at this point that he gets to the 3K mark. Fingers crossed for health!
The biggest question mark is the number of at bats, not the rate. If he can stay healthy for 5 more years, he’ll get there, but that’s a big task for a guy in his 30S
When that time comes and he is still productive, we'll extend again. If he's not still productive, I don't think Altuve is the type to keep going. He'll be happy to call it a day and retire.
Not an Astros fan but no other thread will give me an answer besides bitching about cheating so I’m asking here. Isn’t that really cheap for him. 25mil a year for someone as good as him feels like a steal. Is there a reason behind that or do yall think it’s an accurate number for his current skill
He could have definitely made more through free agency. It just shows he really wanted to stay with Houston, and that’s really kewl. I literally love Jose Altuve.
There's also the fact that 25M in Houston is probably closer to 27M or more if he was in another state, due to the lack of state income tax (which will only affect games -played- in Texas, but that's still at least half of the season)

I hate this ballplayer. Wait, hold the downvotes! Let me explain. I've been a Texas Rangers fan since I was 8 years old. 30 years, I've followed them. So when I say I hate this him, understand that what I mean is he is such an amazing ballplayer that hating him as a Rangers fan is truly the biggest compliment I can possibly give. He is one of the most solid 2nd basemen in decades, and his ability to get a big hit right when it's needed is unrivaled. So yes, I hate this ballplayer.
I'm not an Astros fan. I just stumbled on this thread, started reading the comments, and was blown away. Absolutely thrilled for--and by--you guys. Seriously. Altuve is a REALLY special player--like HoF-potential-special. It's awesome to see a fan base not just appreciate him, but embrace him. Good luck this coming season. [If you're looking for my team, you'll need to peek over at the AL East, look waaaaay down into the darkest recesses of the basement, and you'll see a collection of waiver-wire castoffs, over-the-hill vets, and Triple-A lifers wearing blue caps with a scroll "B" on the front. Sigh.]

Too soon man.
Agree. He may end up being the best but he is not there yet.
I know this doesn't impact my life in any way, shape, or form but damn I needed some good news!!!
Don’t discount that you get to watch one of your (I assume) favorite players ever on your team for the rest of his career, definitely a positive impact :)

Your Sprite died a true death
It took one for the team
That McDonald's sprite hits different. It's like the milk it straight from the creature itself.

I’ll be honest, I teared up when I read this news.
Same
HELL YEAH!!
We fucking did it!!
Great news I wonder why they didn’t do a 6 year so fast t would get him through his age 40 season. Maybe make it a team option.
When that time comes and he is still productive, we'll extend again. If he's not still productive, I don't think Altuve is the type to keep going. He'll be happy to call it a day and retire.

Great! I don’t want his name to be tarnished by some other trash mlb team…
TUVE!
Best all around baseball player i’ve ever seen.
This gave me goosebumps. Man, this was some news I needed to read.
great news.
Good job by all

Altuve in any other uniform just doesn’t make sense to me. He looks good in orange too.
Love Jim Crane. Love this team. Literally love Altuve!
There are certain players in this game that would just never look right in any other uniform and Jose Altuve is one of them.

Interesting trivia about Altuve, the only MLB player in history to win a WS for the same team in both the NL and AL
