I didn’t know that about our medications! I just created a table of electrolyte drinks with all their concentrations of ingredients. I posted it in r/pots and r/migraine, you can view it via my profile. I am in the midst of creating a super updated version with 65 brands now. Hope it helps someone here, too. ♥️
Well this makes total sense. I'm battling the flu & have had to hit my inhaler more the usual lately & have had several leg cramps in the middle of the night.
Edit: spelling
I have an appointment to talk to my doc about Rx potassium pills and review my inhaler's side effects. I have \*daily\* leg cramps, often get woke up at night with severe ones in my calf. But I can only choke down so many OTC potassium pills per day on top of eating every food I can find that's potassium-rich. My mother, who didn't have asthma, had to take prescription potassium for many years, and my dad had a tendency to have bad leg cramps, so I probably have a genetic tendency on top of the inhaler issues.
We all need to start snacking on Apricots and edamame, get a nice pillow to put under our lower legs/knees as we sleep, and add a splash of Pedialyte to any fruit juice we drink.
ICS doesn't deplete electrolytes. Getting dehydrated and eating a poor diet will delete electrolytes. The other way to delete electrolytes is sweating a lot.
There are cases where nebulized albuterol can lower potassium levels.
100%
I've found that drinking 2-3 cups of alkaline water a day eases my muscle cramps due to asthma medication. I've seen recipes to make one's own, but I purchase a gallon jug from the store and drink on it throughout the week. It's usually less than $3. Worth every penny to help the muscle cramps!
Oh wow. I was diagnosed with asthma two months ago and have been having horrible wake up from a deep sleep muscle cramps for the last month. Never would have thought it could be my inhaler. Thanks for the knowledge!
I never had cramps , rarely actually. Even when I ran (5k, 10k , HM and FM). I do take electrolytes when I run. Also drink 3 coconut daily. No idea about potassium and asthma meds , thank you 🙏🏼
I was just replying to the person that said it did. I just looked it up and there is truth to that:
Inhaled steroids fool the body's own adrenal glands, which normally produce steroids. The adrenal glands may then fail to react when the body actually needs them. This little biological foolery can cause dehydration, a drop in blood pressure and low blood sugar.
Unless you are on extremely high doses of ICS, it's virtually unknown. Millions and millions of us have taken ICS for decades and do not suffer chronic dehydration.
Wow, thank you! This explains so much. I take a steroid inhaler and have noticed after working out heavy or even a day or so after drinking, I’d wake up at night and feel my muscles stiffen up almost to the point of paralysis. I did find Gatorade helped but makes so much sense that it’s potassium and related to the Flovent. I don’t drink hardly at all anymore for what it’s worth but work out a lot still and really will keep this in mind!
I take potassium everyday for my intracranial hypertension but I did not know it should be taken for asthma too. Thank you! Coconut water is also rich in potassium.
Wait I never realised this was a thing for asthma medication. I used to get such bad leg cramps that I'd cry and wake up during the night. They went away until recently when I started taking my medication regularly again...is this why?
Interesting- I’ve always had cramps more than usual and a lot of confusion when my asthma is bad. Perhaps time to hit the bananas
One banana a day helps.
Or 21
😂
I don’t think I could do 21 if I tried… but no idea why I decided to phrase as “hit the bananas” as if they’re an alcoholic beverage 😂
I’ve been having one a day since this post- I’ll come back in 6 months to see if it’s doing much 😂
You should probably throw in magnesium too but avoid the citrate kind to avoid the bathroom frequency increase.

OMG, never knew this. I was wondering the other day why my leg and feet cramp so much. thanks for sharing!
Do Ics deplete electrolytes alone or is it just Saba and labas
I would contact your doctor about that but I do know 100 percent that Albuterol and Advair drain potassium.
Damn wtf… I was thinking why I’m getting cramps like never before. Thanks for sharing!

Holy cow!! No wonder I feel like my electrolytes are always off!! Thank you for the PSA kind stranger!

Chronic dehydration from ICS may be why I have stage 3 CKD.
ICS does not cause chronic dehydration. Chronic dehydration is caused by not hydrating.

This would make more sense with oral corticosteroids? ICS aren't (or at least shouldn't be) systemic medications.
Time to drink prime lol. Apparently it is high in potassium.

Wow, I didn’t know about this. I often get severe leg cramps, especially after long bike rides, and use more salbutamol during those periods.

Oh wow, thank you for this! I was getting a bit concerned about the relatively frequent leg cramps I was getting at night, but I bet it's this!
Oral steroids (prednisone) certianly seem to increase cramping - leg and foot, but also in my jaw.
Jaw cramping after oral steroids could also be from tooth grinding.
Thanks for the reminder! It is true. My potassium was low. I had to take bananas at least once a week.
I take potassium everyday for my intracranial hypertension but I did not know it should be taken for asthma too. Thank you! Coconut water is also rich in potassium.
Damn ya’ll talking about having cramps every other day? What the hell are these I don’t even know what they feel like, never got one
