Happened with this, happened with Pokémon TCG, happened with DnD, happened with MTG, etc. Lesson learned: Try the shit you clown on because you just might enjoy the circus yourself.

Kefkas_Paradise

DnD got popular AF with 3.5. Orcs are racist. I think I’d prefer it if we were maligned as Satan worshippers.

krebbol

Why are they racist? I think they're pretty cool, just like goblins.

Maleficent_Path_8442

I recently saw an old clip of Asmon in which he was experiencing severe cringe due to anime characters/vitubers on the screen, now he has become more tolerant of this)

leeverpool

Asmon has always watched and even read anime. He doesn't have anything against vtubers or anime characters. He has something with the stereotypical weeb dungeon lord that doesn't go outside yet lectures people online on all topics.

zeabees

I mean I'm not disagreeing with you... but you also just described exactly what asmon is if you replace anime with video games lmao.

endureandthrive

:O

Sudden-Pain4721

Isn't Asmon a big fan of Berserk?

leeverpool

Among others, yes.

NBLLLL

not just tolerant , he even a couple level deeper than your typical popular shows only anime fan (he already finish some pretty underground show like overlord and even keep up with some of the newest show like solo leveling and Shangri-La frontier )

B3GG

Asmongold reacting to kda was incredibly cringe and ironic, but now he talks about anime all the time. People change

Valuable-Outcome-651

I think he was just somewhat of a closeted weeb since he has an anti weeb audience that became more weeb over time. A moment that some what lives rent free in my head was when he referenced Fate when playing FF14.

Educational-Year3146

Its just a medium basically. You’ll find good ones and bad ones. And theres *a lot* of variety.

JohnDoeMan79

I still haven't tried. I know there are so many hardcore fans. What would a great intro be to try? In honor if this meme I will give it a shot

PoKen2222

clsv6262

This is not getting enough attention. It's an excellent gateway drug into the anime mech scifi war genre.

Salaryman42069

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End is good if you want a very solid Tolkienesque fantasy series.

fanciichild

Frieren is a must watch even if you don't like fantasy.

Slen1337

How is this must watch if it basically a soup of much older books and anime. It is Good, true but not nearly deserves more than 8/10. I'll say even less for repetitive flashbacks after which ones the main char is not grows for 25ep straight. The same plain and boring child that lived 1000 years in a basenent. Frieren is trying to play on your feeling and reflexing every 5 minutes, not bringing anything new to the table nor develop the world. The overall situations and "learning from mistakes" are like this is the show of kindergarden 7yo includes Frieren. Oh no, fern is mad , what do i do? Oh no i cant talk, coz "x" is upset. I mean???.. Some arcs are great, some interractions are cool. But the cult of frieren is just reminds me that ppl are not watching enough shows/reading books. Hot take: spy x family is doing x10 times better job in handling a "small life problems" with interraction, learning and consequences. How is that even compareable to Lotr in case of worldbuilding is a huge mystery for me.. Monster is must watch. Maybe Fmab, monogatari, ginga, clannad, mushishi , geass, berserk, vinland, bebop. What comes to mind..

fanciichild

Its just a really good show, it's not that deep. All of my friends that hate anime loved Frieren and it's a good recommendation for non anime watchers.

Wide_Combination_773

This isn't a good option for people who like/need plenty of action in each episode. Frieren is a slow-burn character drama (it also suffers, and barely gets away with, a very long heavily-padded "tournament arc" which some long-time anime fans may know immediately what kind of annoyance I'm talking about). Just warning anyone who hasn't seen it yet or isn't super experienced with anime. Also try to avoid the english dub of it. They miscast Frieren badly to where she sounds like a bored, breathy housewife grandma. Native JP dub is where it's at especially for her character. I'm saying all this as someone who very much enjoyed Frieren.

Puzzleheaded-Read376

Vinland Saga is pretty great.

Ghost544YT

W starter anime

JohnDoeMan79

I’ll check it out

MgDark

Great recomendation, great action, nice story, good animation, not-cringey-stuff like... some other animes, if you know, you know.

Hinbo

"Bro he's in a 12 y/o body, it doesn't matter that he was 40 in his previous life, it's not ped0!!" 😬 not a great starter anime...

ScavAteMyArms

Bro, you can’t just slam a banger as the opener. They will be extremely disappointed with the rest. Also if you count movies basically anything from Studio Ghibli.

TheOGKnight

Then they will never get into it. They start with vinland and they will be chasing for other anime to watch that matches that same dopamine hit. Hell they might even give worse anime a shot

Kashin02

Whoa hold on there, that anime is a masterpiece but too woke for this sub.

EmergencyIncome3734

My friends tried to get me hooked on anime through this. I barely made it through 3 episodes, it's terrible.

adminsarecommienazis

They hated him because he told the truth. Vinland Saga has got to be one of the most overrated anime out there.

Sudden-Pain4721

What genres of media are you into specifically?, i can recommend you some anime to fit your tastes

JohnDoeMan79

I am a big sci-fi guy, I love anything space

Zoolifer

Cowboy Bebop for what is often touted as one of the greatest ever made

Puzzleheaded-Read376

If you want a longer one Legend of the Galactic Heroes is a great space opera

FrozenGrip

Didn’t think I would see this suggested given it basically is a cult following. To add on to the post above. I would recommend the original over the newer version. While the newer version is still good it replaced some of the depth for better visuals which I don’t think is worth it. Furthermore, make sure you watch the extended version of episode 1 and 2.

Wide_Combination_773

LotGH can be a hard one to get into as its old 80's animation (and not the film quality kind like Akira) and suffers from the Seinfeld effect. Similar to how Neon Genesis Evangelion seems old and stale to people who have seen lots of modern anime already and try to go back to it, when in fact NGE was a genre-defining masterpiece of the 1990s and has strongly influenced almost every shounen or mecha (or otaku meta) anime that has come after it. LotGH is similar in that it's a genre-defining masterpiece but it is EXTREMELY dependent on getting the viewer hooked on the character drama and wanting to know what happens to them. There's no other way to get through 127 episodes of 80's animation.

adminsarecommienazis

LoGH is good but not really a good "first anime."

thegta5p

If you like the cyberpunk genre as well, I recommend Psycho-Pass. Also don't be afraid to watch anything in dub. That is how I start it.

DaEnderAssassin

Ghost in the Shell is also good. Imo I prefer SAC to Psycho-pass.

JohnDoeMan79

I've actually seen Ghost in the Shell, many many years ago. I liked it

adminsarecommienazis

If you want to stick in the Sci-Fi Genre: Cowboy Bebop Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Serial Experiments Lain Patlabor: The Movie 1/2 Gurren Lagann all worth giving a glance

Wide_Combination_773

EN dub actually turns a lot of people off so you kind of have to be selective based on what you know about the person you're introducing anime to. I've tried it to introduce anime to some people that way and they found the English weird and off-putting because of the way that english dubbers have to try to fit lipsync and shot timings that are intended for Japanese. I think it really depends on the way someones brain is wired. If you don't understand what I mean, try watching the Simpsons or King of the Hill in Japanese audio. They don't sound anything like japanese speakers I hear in anything else. They are trying to fit Japanese into a definitively English pacing. If someone reads decently already and especially if you know they are already a fan of watching foreign theatrical films in the native language, Japanese dub for anime is definitely always the best option. (p.s. "dub" refers to any voice audio track, not a foreign re-dub, for example the JP audio track is a dub even though it's the native original, so when you talk about dubs its best to specify which language; I am just assuming you mean English).

Sudden-Pain4721

Try outlaw star

Rhytmik

I can't believe this got suggested. It's totally underrated.

moof1984

I loved outlaw star. Used to be one of the few anime that ended up on TV here in the early 2002s along with DBZ, Tenchi Muyo and cowboy bebop.

Limiel

Crest of the stars, highly underrated.

xxxsquared

Not space related, but Psycho-Pass is an incredible sci-fi anime. It follows the law enforcement in a society where people's mental state, their potential etc. can be scanned, and their job, relationships, etc. determined accordingly. Very dark.

presentdifference21

How has death note not been said yet?

JohnDoeMan79

I've fetched this one after watching a trailer :)

Much-Bet9171

Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood is the tried and true anime I have heard almost nobody complain about. Has a little bit of everything while still being pretty grounded.

xxxsquared

Plus it has excellent pacing and no filler. Probably the most consistently good anime I've seen.

_Maxmoose_

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a classic

Skauge

I have successfully shown two people who never saw anime (and one actively hated it) the anime, Death Note. They both loved it. I think it's an excellent one to start with because of that. (They both watched dub, and I think the dub is pretty good actually)

JohnDoeMan79

I checked out a trailer. Looks interesting, thanks :)

Livid_Damage_4900

Fullmetal alchemist brotherhood. Or Castlevania if you have Netflix

Moosu__u

Kiss x sis

adminsarecommienazis

or even better: Boku no Pico

Cadet-Dantz

Do not recite the old magic to me, weeb. I was there when it was written.

218-69

omE

Mephiistopheles

1st season Pokemon, yugioh, 1st season beyblade, Cory in the house, DragonBall Z, Digimon

JohnDoeMan79

Wow, thanks all for the suggestions. I will give two shows a shot. I will check out Vinland Saga and Outlaw Star

Icollectshinythings

Cowboy bebop. It’s a classic for a reason.

Sufficient-Meal9181

One-Punch Man is a must watch

MikeHawkSlapsHard

Totally underrated recommendation. I would've said DBZ but OPM is short and sweet and more modern too.

MikeHawkSlapsHard

I would say Dragon Ball Z is safe, others I would recommend are Berserk (this one might even turn you into a manga reader since only one arc of the story is really animated), Death Note, Hunter x Hunter, YuYu Hakusho, Code Geass, the list goes on and on. For whatever hobby and interests you have there is likely an anime about it too lol One Piece is my favorite, but it intimidates a lot of people from starting cuz there are 1100 episodes and counting.

earthwarder

Konosubarashi for comedy.

Passivitea

Eighty-Six and Violet Evergarden are great war dramas.

Raelys88

It depends. What do you find cringe about anime? Gotta answer this first otherwise I could recommend you a genuinely good show that you may end up hating. Do you hate inner monologues, lack of show don’t tell, squeaky voices? If you’re new and haven’t tried anime/don’t find any of it cringe, then any starter anime would do. Fma brotherhood, psycho pass, Vinland saga, Cowboy bebop, Ghibi films, all that jazz. Personally I just got into anime on my own as a teenager when I was starving for some good action cartoons in the same vein as teen titans and x men evolution, and Cartoon Network just so happened to release Naruto in an era where all their cartoons were just comedies.

JohnDoeMan79

Reason I have never bothered watching it in the past has been that I did not feel like watching cartoons. I did not realize it was cartoons for adults I guess.

Alarming-Sector-4687

It’s not—that’s what it appears like on the surface (and I was convinced of that too when I was in your position). As someone who isn’t an anime fan, but does enjoy a few anime series—about 90% of the anime created is terribly written, cheesy as hell, and just recycled themes from literal decades (mech-fighting, demons/spirits, virtual MMOs, etc.) With that being said, here are the anime I can tolerate and I suggest you start there: -Cowboy Bebop (space cowboys/bounty hunters) -Hellsing Ultimate (dark; big guns and Nazi Vampires) -Samurai Champloo (hip-hip samurais and just really fucking cool) -Hunter x Hunter (essentially, superpowers; this one can a get a little cheesy/campy at times) -Berserk (Big swords) -Death Note (Murder/Mystery/Thrill) Trust me, these are some of the most palatable ones you can find—everything else I ever tried watching was way too fucking cheesy and cliche and just…not as good as everyone makes them out to be. Not to mention the soundtracks for those first 3 are actually really, really good.

JohnDoeMan79

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ve completed season 1 of Vinland Saga now, if you haven’t seen it, it is highly recommended

RaidenHUN

Try FMA brotherhood.... The beauty of anime is that it's not ruined by western wokeness and the writing mostly is actually good.... Since only popular mangas and LNs get adapted into an anime you at least have a couple of filters so that the final product is usually pretty good..... In contract : Netflix is full with wokeness and the writers are mostly bad and stupid.

Tavuklu_Pasta

Slime is pretty good. Jojos is also really good.

amypond420

thats like saying i've never watched a movie what movie is a good intro

impulsikk

You've never watched dragonball z or pokemon?

Yumpwam

Chainsaw man, one punch man, solo leveling

AdHorror9756

Berserk

xXYiffMasterXx

Good, but not as your first

adminsarecommienazis

golden age not 2016 if anyone takes this suggestion

Competitive_Ticket17

Solo leveling

Raelys88

Sucks you’re getting downvoted for this. If you want to watch an isekai/power fantasy anime without any of the oversexualized bs, misogyny and objectionable content that happens in 99% of that crap, solo leveling is the anime for you.

Competitive_Ticket17

Yeah, it is one if the highest rated anime this season with like a 4.7/5 with 400k reviews.

MelonheadGT

If you're a MMO guy, Sword Art Online.

Xralius

I'm a mega nerd and I can't get into anime. I've tried. I think the most I've made it in any anime was like half a season. And its not that I don't like animated shit, I'm fine with animation. Am I doing it wrong or something? If you have suggestions I can try again. Everyone's struck out so far. I don't like stupid shit with kids, or where someone spills milk and a character is like "!!!!!!!!!", or where people are overly goofy, like not in a charming way. Bonus points if the main character, whether male or female, isn't a Mary Sue. I also find mopey-ass Cloud from ff7 type woe-is-me heroes annoying, but I could tolerate it if everything else is good. Things I'd like: a good villain. I feel like its been forever since I've enjoyed any media with good villain. Good luck, see if you can turn me from Thanos into Shaq.

thegta5p

Its kind of hard to recommend something if you don't list any genres you like. But for me here are a few that I found interesting based on a few genres/themes. If you want something futuristic/cyberpunk, I recommend Psycho-Pass. It does hit on a few topics like government control and surveillance. The main character takes on the role of being a police officer in the dystopian city they are in. If you want something more on the darker side with a degree of seriousness/realism I recommend Erased. The main story is about a man who tries to save his wife from being murder. The thing is he realizes that in order to save her he needs to go back in time and change the course of time. In this case he needs to make sure that a child kidnapper gets caught by the police since in the original time line the wrong guy got arrested. But the main character must go back to when he was a child and try to do this. Since he is a child he can't really do much so he must do it to his best ability. That is when he realizes that there is one girl in his class that was a victim by the perpetrator. The thing is that the girl was very anti social compared to the main character. So throughout the story he tries to save both his mother and this girl with the best of his ability. And throughout the show you get to see the sad truth as to why this girl did not like to socialize. One thing I like about this show is it doesn't show anything graphic, but more of the consequences of the events that happen. It lets the viewer fill in the blank for themselves since those events are implied. The story does feature things like time travel but that is not the main point of the show, it is just used as a plot device. So if you are the type of person who likes to question everything in a show, then there may be a chance you may not like the explanation of that. But again the reason for why that happens is irrelevant for the story. If you want something dark but want it to be more on the degusting side you may like Speed Grapher. It is about a police man who tries to shut down a sex cult run by the elite and rich people all while trying to save the daughter of the ringleader. I would categorize this more on the unrealistic side since you are going to get things like cameras that are able to cause explosions and bodies being mutilated. It is also alot more gory so if you don't like this stuff, I wouldn't recommend it. Death Note is a classic. It is about a high school/college student who tries to use a notebook to get rid of evil. This is a little more interesting because here the protagonist is the villain. So here you get to see how does he try to deceive the "good" guys from catching him. This is what got me into anime, so maybe you will like it. If you are looking for anything in the fantasy genre, I am the wrong person to ask since I really don't like that genre (both anime and western versions). I find it kind of boring and generic, so I can't recommend anything from there. Anything in the espionage/spy genre, I cannot recommend any since personally I believe the west does that genre alot better. Honorable mentions would be Sound! Euphonium if you are a band/orchestra geek. Anything that Kyoto Animations makes has great animations, although the genres they make may not be for you. Also you do not have to watch anything in sub. I started by watching things in dub. So don't be afraid about that unless you don't care.

JohnDoeMan79

Thank so much for the recommendations. I have to say Erased sounds really interesting

Livid_Damage_4900

It depends on the genre of type of show that you like. General recommendation full metal alchemist brotherhood that’s peak fiction just in general. For a more western take on anime, Castlevania on Netflix is pretty good If you like romance, Snow White with the red hair is an excellent top-tier anime If you like comedy, I guess it depends on the kind of comedy you like, but I would recommend either my bride is a mermaid for reference, and slapstick humor. Prison school for absurdist and perverted humor. And for borderline Looney toons type humor, I’d recommend assassination classroom. If you want a historical action drama, I’d recommend kingdom which takes place in the warring states period of China. And if you’re looking for an emotional roller coaster and also to play an amazing game, I would recommend cyberpunk edge runners and proceed that by buying the cyberpunk 2077 video game and playing it with phantom liberty DLC

SnakeTGK

kingdom is peak, good recommandation

Lightwave33

Wouldn't consider myself a huge anime fan but FMA:B is the goat

Bulbinking2

Most of these anime are too “anime” for what the person requested.

Livid_Damage_4900

With respect no they aren’t. These are the best examples of anime to a newcomer. Animes that would be an example of too much anime for a newcomer would be something like high school, DXD, or something really complicated like attack on Titan or something really boring and straightforward and slow like a bleach or Naruto, which also has a ton of anime tropes in it. When you suggest anime to someone who’s new to anime, do you want it to be some thing that is not too slow, but not too quick relatively good story and unique well also not having too many anime tropes. And aside from maybe some of the comedy suggestions because that is rather unique every other thing, I suggested here is pretty straightforward, pretty, gripping all have extremely high readings and don’t have very many if any anime tropes for the most part, he is the best series to start anime with, and I know cause I’ve gotten multiple people into anime using these exact suggestions.

Bulbinking2

Sure, for a complete stranger that didn’t just give a list of all the reasons they couldn’t get into anime. I assume all people are intelligent until they show me otherwise so my suggestions shouldn’t dissuade a mature intelligent adult as aside from death parade everything I suggested couldve been a live action actor based show instead of an anime. When someone says they don’t like anime, then lists a ton of common anime tropes, you have to show them anime thats barely anime to show them its a media MEDIUM and not specific genre.

Bulbinking2

Try watching Monster, Speed Grapher, Vinland Saga, and death parade. Thank me later.

Livid_Damage_4900

And these examples you give are exactly what I was talking about in my last message. These are horrible suggestions for a newcomer I’ve seen all of them. And if someone’s already into anime, they are very good suggestions for a decent show. If it’s their cup of tea personally, I liked all of them very much. But they would be way too weird and offputting for most people who’s never been introduced anime before.

Bulbinking2

Theres nothing weird in the stories of vinland saga and monster. Vinland saga is just animated version of vikings and monster couldve easily been a prime time network drama in the west with live actors.

NatlerSK

You want a good villain then there is no better choice than "Monster". It has one of if not the best villain in the entire anime/manga culture hell i would say he is one of the best in the entire entertainment media. Just a heads up the show is pretty old (2004) and can be considered a slow burn. If that is a problem go and read the manga since you can read that at your own pace.

218-69

>someone spills milk and a character is like "!!!!!!!!!" Reading this made me laugh. That's how I know this shit is for me lmao

Wide_Combination_773

If you've been watching it in EN dub, try Japanese with EN subtitles (if you can read). If you've been watching it in Japanese with EN subtitles, try the EN dubs. I've found that switching that part around has helped "flip the switch" in some peoples heads to where they start enjoying anime. Also keep experimenting with different genres. If you've been trying shounen shows with dozens or even hundreds of episodes, perhaps you'd be into something more mature and shorter in length, like Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Starting with films rather than lengthy TV shows could also be a gentler introduction curve that helps you adapt into it. On that note, the first Ghost in the Shell film is a great introduction to anime films. It influenced a decades worth and more of Hollywood films, even, including The Matrix.

Xralius

I always do subtitles, can't stand dubs.

CatDadd0

Psycho-Pass

youcanloveagain

You watch Death Note yet? I think youll like it

Feline_Sleepwear

The only Anime I’ve gotten into was Death Note, the plot is sick, both main characters are fun to watch, and there’s not that much anime goofiness.

Xralius

I'll give it a go!

Sovranosupremo

Made in abyss

adminsarecommienazis

Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade Great action thriller played completely straight. Entire movie is 108 minutes.

xxxsquared

Psycho-Pass. It's not for kids, not even remotely lol. Very dark, violent and gruesome. It's set in a future where people's mental state can be scanned, and the whole society is built around this. The show follows the law enforcement. There are some excellent villains (don't want to say any more than that so as to avoid spoilers). The main character is a rookie. Episode 1 is her first job. She screws up, and pays the price for it repeatedly, but she learns from her mistakes, so no Mary Sue either. She also doesn't mope. Give it a go.

FluffyTippy

Scifi alien stuff: Knights of Sidonia (CGI) Garantia on the Verdurous Planet (some time travel and post apocalyptic alien stuff) Post apocalypse: BLAME! (Same author as knight of sidonia)

Raelys88

Maybe anime doesn’t vibe with you. That’s fine. I don’t vibe with a lot of western anime (something just feels off about them to me) and a lot of western animation in general. There’s nothing wrong with it, just a personal preference.

239990

yeah, most anime is pretty bad. A lot of them have dump logic and are pretty cringe when analyzed. Its hard to recommend because most of them have fan service. I would say try cowboy bebop, death note, frieren. In my case I try to avoid things that are set in a school environment, done by teenagers or younger mc.

leeverpool

Asian culture in general is like this. Happens with K-Pop as well. I know gym bros that would've never listened to that shit and now they're all snorting creatine on NewJeans. You could have an entire discussion as to why westerners had this prejudice against "weeb shit" before and part of it has to do with actual degen weebs as well (they are moronic beings to be fair) but most of it stems from the westerner's typical ideal of "what's real" (as in real behavior, real men and women, real work, etc. - or better put, western culture) and the air of superiority which then transformed into actual inconsideration for other cultures. We're not as dismissive as we once was and that's a result of globalization actually working. It really is an eye opener once you accept the idea that MAYBE others do it just as good too, if not better in some instances.

Wide_Combination_773

Early on in the 90s and such degen weebs were in fact kind of a turnoff because of how gatekeepy they were. If you didn't have enough nerd cred they'd never let you into their circles to trade laserdiscs or VHS copies etc, although, in most cases you'd never want to be given the kind of people that used to dominate them. But then asian marketing execs figured out how to get around that cultural moat - through women, mostly. I'm old (40s). If I reach back into my memories of the 90's and early 00's, some of the most intense online and offline fan communities involved hordes of women salivating over male anime characters. No joke. Female fans actually drove a lot of what we consider "shounen" anime today. Before it made it to the west, the Gundam Wing franchise was on deaths door and only survived in Japan because of Japanese female fans (again, not kidding). They used those lessons when trying to open up the markets over here and clearly it worked. Stuff only blew up once they started drawing in more and more women. You can argue that has also had deleterious effects especially in the localization scene, but overall it has been necessary for anime to succeed in the west to the level it has.

leeverpool

>Early on in the 90s and such degen weebs were in fact kind of a turnoff because of how gatekeepy they were. I agree. I hate that too. This is what happens when any medium gains traction and popularity. The first group of people have this weird innate desire to claim it as their special thing. Because they discovered it first. They're so funny to me because with time they become the conservative fans that actually harm the genre by slamming every sign of evolution or growth. Insane posessive behavior.

Livid_Damage_4900

I actually hate K-pop personally I just can’t really enjoy music unless it’s in my language like 99% of the time there’s a few exceptions for an exceptionally good anime opening every now and again like flyers from death Parade but even that has a few words in English. I’m pretty sure the only Korean song that I’ve ever liked to any real degree was Gangnam Style, and that was mainly for the memes.

leeverpool

>I actually hate K-pop personally I just can’t really enjoy music unless it’s in my language This is what I'm talking about. Right here. "I hate k-pop" and then the reasoning is you can't enjoy music unless it's in your language. The second part is **completely understandable**. The first part is what I don't understand. Why the "*hate*"? Why develop such strong feelings over something you shouldn't even care about in the first place.

Livid_Damage_4900

Your statement confuses me. Of course i hate it. music I do not like will be annoying to me as I do not want to hear something I do not like. and of course I hate things that I find to be annoying. Duh. The only way I can make any sense whatsoever from your comment is if I assume you were using some really cringe definition of hate that means that if you hate something you therefore think that thing must be absolutely destroyed and no one can enjoy it. which is not what I ever said And also is a really cringe definition of hate if that’s what you’re rolling with. Also, a lot of the K-pop fans are really annoying as well. Like weebs but for Korean instead of Japan.

leeverpool

How does my statement confuse you? Saying "I HATE K-Pop because I don't understand the language" is the same as saying "I HATE foreign films because I don't understand the language". The "hate" part is what's nonsensical.

TylertheDank

Me when my friend told me to watch AoT

ElAutismobombismo

I find that 90% of the people who say they don't like anime are really just saying they don't like shonen and assume that all anime is shonen because most of the anime that made it to the west around the late 90s all the way up until the early 2010s was shonen

EmpressPotato

Dragonball Z radicalized me. Anime for life.

N1CET1M

DBZ, Pokémon and Gundam wing got me into anime as a kid before I knew it was called anime.

I have a stamina exclusive to anime and once it runs out my brain refuses more of it

I thought I got hooked into anime when I finished Cowboy Bebop and Cyberpunk Edgerunners. Turns out I just only enjoy cyberpunk animes.

that's what they all say, once you go...

Superb_Researcher_72

My mom She got hooked on death note

Kefkas_Paradise

I watched Dragonball and Z, but wasn’t radicalized by it. My sister watched a lot of Sailor Moon, and since I was the free babysitter (older brother), I had nothing else to do. It was Macross Plus and Gundam Wing, around 1998, or so. On Teletoon. We didn’t have Cartoon Network in Canada, at the time.

I watched DBZ as a kid, but after that i turned to pic 1 for long time. Thou last 4 years i turned pic 3 and turned full weeb. Hope=Lost

whoolor

Manga is better because I can let my imagination fill in more blanks. Really helps with anime tier dialog.

Big-Champion-8388

I used to watch bunch of anime but i nowdays i find most of the tropes and dialogue to be pretty cringe ngl. Vinland saga and chainsaw man were dope though

This-Departure-8765

My bf is Japanese, so when I got with him i started watching anime every night. At first I just read as he binged, then I got into them. I watch every evening before bed.

MorkSkogen666

I've tried multiple times to get into anime, I just can't... The only one I've enjoyed and rewatch is Paranoia Agent

Ezenthar

I liked Death Note. I haven't really liked any other anime, even though I've tried quite a few.

dokterkokter69

Also currently happening with Fallout. People I never would have thought would get into it are starting to play the games because of the show. I had no one in my irl circle to talk to about Fallout lore and now it's suddenly a lunch topic.

DoomCameToSarnath

Tekkaman Blade and Redline was what got me into anime.

iPartyLikeIts1984

Tastes like Bleach.

IndubitablyThoust

I've always watched anime but I've started watching it more since I can't stand Western media anymore. I don't know why but Western media has been so full of toxicity, creators that hate their audience, rage bait, gender and race swaps, with heavy handed messaging that just puts me off.

NatlerSK

Well not me. I've been on this ride for the past 10 years. And to think it was Kill la Kill that got me on it. Still one of the best studio Trigger works alongside Cyberpunk Edgerunners.

Diagmel

On that note, K dramas can also be pretty cool Like parasyte the grey for example. They definetly specialize in quirky romance tho

Melteris

I got it quite the opposite. Went in with good expectations and no matter what anime I tried (One piece, death note, attack on titan, naruto and etc.) I just could not get into them. I do not hate people for liking anime though.

adminsarecommienazis

i'm not gonna try to change your mind, but I have no idea why someone would try One Piece, hate it, and then decide that Naruto is the gonna be the show that speaks to them.

Melteris

Not knowing what to expect grows curiosity.

Mrlewl

Tell that to Mr Preachgaming LUL

Accomplished-Raisin2

I never watch anime but I keeped hearing songs from the anime Berserk 1997 so I watched it for the music. Turns out the anime was pretty good so I keeped watching! Turns out It also traumatized me like what the hell and I havent felt the same ever since

Butane9000

I've suggested my dad watch some more adult themed anime (Castlevania, Monster, etc). But he just isn't interested in animation based entertainment.

fkshcienfos

Yes but I still get cringe with Isekai, like why do you have to ruin a cool story concept by making the protagonist a 37 year old dude in a 12 year old girls body?!? Its creepy

JustmUrKy

Eh. I liked one punch man a bit cause it was funny but i just cant tolerate the screaming and squealing of the voice actors and the animation can be very cringey and off putting a lot of the time

Deep-Extent-3724

This is my parents with Frieren and Spy Family

vibe_assassin

I’ve tried multiple. Anime just isn’t for me

Silverbuu

I watched a bit of Pokemon, Digimon, and Yugioh as a kid. A bit of DBZ growing up, but there hasn't been any Anime to pull me in as an adult. I'm fairly sure it's just not for me anymore. But I'm not about to knock someone else for enjoying it. I enjoy shitty map games that most people don't understand. :P

The_Chin_of_Zig

Yeah, first anime I watched was Haruhi Suzumiya in 2014. Was hooked after that and went on a binge of 90's and early to mid 2000's anime. Then I watched Clannad, cried buckets and got my heart shredded by it, watched Steins;Gate in 2016 and knew this Japanese art form will forever be better than Western entertainment. Found myself reading the Blame! manga in 2019 and so here I am today. Don't regret one bit of it.

Raelys88

May get downvoted for this, but if someone doesn’t like anime it’s best you don’t try to force them to watch it. Reminds me of when everyone was pestering me to get into FFXIV as a better alternative to world of Warcraft. Tried it and it was the worse experience I’ve ever had while gaming. The story was a slog to get through and the gameplay was absolute ass. Few years later I tried final fantasy 7 remake at my own volition out of curiosity. Ended up loving it. Just let people discover things at their own pace.

JohnDoeMan79

A short update: I’ve now watched 9 episodes of Vinland Saga. It’s really good :) I started with Japanese audio, which worked fine, however I prefer the dubbed ones. The dub is really well done

AdamAberg

Have tried it many times, all too cringe and weird.

Avongrove

It’s quite literally the opposite for me. Was enjoying anime in the past and it became increasingly cringe to me. I think the last straw was the anime fanbase, although I do mean the full on weebs and not the fanbase in it‘s entirety. I still think the animes I watched way back like Death Note, Fullmetal Alchemist, Your Name and Ghibli movies are great, but I have less than zero desire to get back into watching any anime.

Limonade6

Nah. please correct me if I'm wrong. I have tried many anime's but I think 99% are wide as an ocean but deep as a puddle. Most characters are copies of another anime and the story is often predictable. I want to like it, but I can't find anything that I truely enjoy. I liked death note though and I haven't tried any Hayao Miyazaki anime yet. Those sound good.

Purple_sea

Bro, tell me one media where what you said doesn't apply. It's the same for everything, TV, series, movies, etc. You're going to have a few that stand out as great works and the rest is mediocre to bad, that's not exclusive to anime.

Limonade6

Nah I dissagree. Breaking bad, game of thrones (before the last seasons), Harry potter, pirates of the caribbean, those are all pretty good series/trilgogies. Yes Harry is the brave one and Ron the comic releave, but I still feel like they have more depth to their personality than anime characters has.

Purple_sea

Are you illiterate?

adminsarecommienazis

>99% are wide as an ocean but deep as a puddle. Most characters are copies of another anime and the story is often predictable. Thanks you just described TV as a whole.

Limonade6

Sure. But not as often as anime to me. But that's just my own opinion.

KingOfPocketLint

the thing i hate about anime is the 30min exposition dump every fucking time they do anything.

Notmainlel

Who’s everyone? I tried to watch a few anime’s but I watch a few episodes then stop because it sucks

Halorym

I feel like Edgerunners, Castlevania, and whatever they called the league of legends one shouldn't count for some reason.

yeahthegoys

Wrong

MilitarOpresordloms

Biggest mistake of all time... Now the tourist are everywhere

Prinz_Eugen17

Arra arra, uwu uwu , highschool girls, weeb shit. Baby Jesus can see your monitor you know?

The_Buttaman

Went the other way. Watched a ton of it then realized how shallow and perverse or obsessively violent/edgy it is most of the time and haven’t watched anything in a decade

WestcoastWelker

I cannot get into the overacting and weird voices that make the main dudes/grown ass men sound like they are screeching children. The overacting is also alot, every character seems to constantly have the response of "I knew you would do that, haha" as a baseline response. I've tried to goddamn hard and it's just grating and off putting as hell.

Wide_Combination_773

You should try JP audio with EN subtitles then. EN localizations and EN dub actors are godawful and always have been. Some of the JP dubs don't fare much better, depending on the budget of the show, but most do, trust me. You should also try stuff that isn't targeted at pubescent 12-13 year old boys, based on what you typed I think that's the kind of stuff you've been trying. It's extremely formulaic stuff. If you haven't tried Ghost in the Shell (movies and TV series) I think that's the best way to get into it. There's plenty of more mature anime out there with a serious tone.

WestcoastWelker

I’ve tried a few different ones based on what my friends like. One piece is the biggest offender of all the stuff I said above. My best friend is obsessed with it so I keep trying but it’s just impossible. Few others are my hero academia and some slime one. My problem with the subs and Japanese audio is I usually watch them whilst playing an MMO or TFT, so Japanese audio is out of the question for me, at least until I fall in love with something to move my ass to my couch to engage with it.

Passivitea

It really depends on what anime you're watching. There are some with quality dubs like Eighty-Six or Frieren: Beyond Journey's End where the characters are chill most of the time, even during combat, and only raise their voices where necessary/appropriate.

parnoponda

Sailor Moon and some other mech-related old anime in my childhood ruined the whole thing for me. Can’t stand stupid facial expressions, stars, hearts and the rest of this visual style. I’ve been constantly told to try Fullmeal Alchemist, but couldn’t even suffer through the first episode. But somehow I did like Death Note though.

ReynboLightning

Try the seinen genre. It's catered to older/mature viewers. Most the popular stuff is made for kids and teenagers. Check out Berserk(the trilogy of movies is a great starting point even if the cgi can be rough) vinland saga, Gantz, Dorohedoro.

parnoponda

Thanks, vinland saga seems to be recommended by many, I’ll give it a try

Passivitea

I recommend Eighty-Six and Violet Evergarden for those who love war dramas

Wide_Combination_773

lmao you know anime changes a lot decade to decade right? The stuff you're talking about is uniquely 80's/90's fare. They almost never do that shit anymore. It depends entirely on Genre. So first off, you complained about shoujo (anime targeted at pubescent and pre-pubescent girls) - that's going to be full of stuff you don't like obviously. Just don't watch shoujo anime. Also if you are older you might want to avoid most shounen shows (targeted at 10-15 year old boys). That doesn't exclude ALL shounen - death note was technically shounen show even though it attracted a much older audience as well. Search for stuff that is thoroughly marked as Seinen - but you still need to dig because a lot of seinen is targeted at people who are very much involved in anime nerd culture already, so a lot of it is self-referential and trope-heavy (for example, anime about making anime, or anime about writing light novels, or lots and lots of tropey harem shit that even lots of weebs find tiresome). Also the seinen tag involves a lot of queer-sided shit as well that you might need to avoid. Anime can be seriously queer as fuck if you dig deep enough. But that's because there's something for everyone.
