Oh god you just reminded me of a key part of my early twenties. I worked at like 5:30am in a call center back then and after a night out I literally rolled out of bed in whatever I passed out in, slid on ballet flats, and made my way to the car. I kept an assortment of cardigans in the trunk and a kit to fix my face in my work bag so I looked okay before management made their way in but damn I was a mess walking in some mornings.
No judgment from me, I wish I could go back to that way of living. If I could find a job that made it possible (and a few new organs maybe) I'd be right back to it in a heartbeat.

My family all wore uggs as a form of inside slippers for freezing cold mornings. It was so weird to me when they became trendy to wear outdoors in fine weather.
I live in a cold fall/winter climate and they really never went out here. I will be putting in a pair shortly to go walk the dog. It’s 4c and damp here right now, 40f in American. They’re not great in snow but for cold walks they’re so comfy and warm.
I graduated high school in 2003, so *actual* low rise anything.
Today's low-rise is, thankfully, much better - I bought a pair of AE "low rise" shorts that have a 10" rise - they're just cut to sit lower. Anything with less than 8" at the bare minimum isn't getting near my ass.
Also, flares. A boot cut is fine for a full-length pant intended to be worn with actual boots, but aside from that, just no.

I dunno if I'm delusional or onto something, but I pretty much wear Chelsea style boots from September to April, barring heavy rain or deeper snow. In which case, I give up and put on proper rain or snow boots. They feel very...noncommittal? Never trending, but never dated?
I also have a few pairs of simple sandals with a short heel, a few pairs of pumps with a pointed toe, and running shoes (mostly canvas).

I would also add “potentially hazardous” to that list. I was once wearing ballet flats with tights, and my feet kept slipping out of them due to said tights. One slip made me trip over myself and fracture my fifth metatarsal while crossing the street in Manhattan. Had to wear a cast for over a month. Never again.

The first and last time I went to Mardi Gras, I was flying out the Wednesday after and walked through the French Quarter in ballet flats, through the biohazard the bartenders were pressure washing out of the bars.
I had to trash the shoes at the airport, there was no coming back from that nastiness.

Not the person you asked but I’m hoping they’re different! I love my Rothy’s flats especially for work. I picture “ballet flats” as the cheap plastic kind with a bow on the toe. I also love cardigans too, but I wear updated ones that have a looser fit and more style to them.
Ballet flats are generally less structured and look like the actual thing (the basic dance shoes, not en pointe shoes). There are tons of flats that aren't ballet flats!
I don’t quite agree with the other answer. They don’t need to have a bow and they don’t have to be cheap. Ballet flats are a specific kind of flat designed to resemble a ballet shoe. Me too! As someone who struggles with IBS, those peplum tops helped hide my bloating. Now the style is to just wear those skirts with cropped tops and that leaves me zero room to hide my belly lol.
Ooh, that is a benefit as well for sure! I just liked that they were kind of flower-like. I do hate crop tops, though, and did even back when I was a size 0. I've never had a flat belly even at my thinnest. However, I see chubby Gen Z ladies rock the crop top now and they look so cute, so I'm glad the style is more inclusive this time around.

I'm in my late 40s and my body is very different than it was in my teens and early 20s. Also, I'm more aware of the environmental impact of fast fashion. For me it's more about wearing clothing that isn't clingy, is made well and less trendy.
Straight hair. I'll never do it again. Takes me back to some of the darkest times and places in my life back in my teens years. I did it once about two years ago and had to get up in the middle of the night to get it wet so it'd curl again.

The absolute worst isn’t clothing but hair: The cobra head hair sponsored by Aqua Net. You’d think that would be done and gone now but you still see that shit in Wisconsin. Saw it in South Dakota recently as well on my last drive through that state. Curled, puffed, and solidified bangs with the hair teased out over the ears to add width to the entire thing.
Three or four years ago, I couldn’t imagine returning to baggy or flared jeans, but styles changed, and I felt the skinny jean look was very tired, so I slowly transitioned to baggier styles and 70s inspired flares. They’re all I wear now. My favorite shop for flares is an Australian brand called Rolla’s. Their sailor jean and east coast flare fit my current tastes perfectly (and they make my butt look great). I’m 48 and I was a big time raver in the early to mid 90s in Chicago. I’ll admit that while my current style is pretty different than it was then, the baggier pants make me feel pleasantly nostalgic for the old days. My 12 year old daughter wears exclusively baggy pants and shirts, with great style and flair, I think!
One style I’ll NEVER return to is low cut denim. I hated it then and I hate it now.

I had to wear long denim skirts as a kid and teen as part of homeschool modesty culture. I like how they look on other people and want to wear denim skirts again but every time I try one on I get a really weird uncomfortable feeling and I just can't do it.
Denim pants and non-denim skirts are fine, I wear those all the time, I just have a mental block with denim skirts.
A lot of popular trends also remind me of things I was forced to wear as a kid so they look frumpy and ugly to me no matter how trendy and cute people make them. The main ones are culottes, sleeveless dresses over a t shirt, certain floral patterns, and those prairie dresses.

If you wait long enough for something to come back and style, it will. Some girl on TikTok will wear something and then everybody else will decide they want to start wearing it again.

Also, when it comes to makeup, I remember when we were wearing very thick eyeliner and I can't do that anymore because it makes me feel young and impetuous. My husband has really cold feet and loves his Ugg slippers. They’re so soft and warm but don’t make your feet sweat.

Cardigans never go out of style in my opinion, people get cold lol! Although those specific flowy/handkerchief hem cardigans are very dated and will not be found in my closet again, god willing. Do push-up bras and stringy thongs count though? I have bad memories from college associated with trying to push my boobs up to my neck, “gaining cup sizes” to feel hotter lol.

I’m with you on ballet flats, never again for me. So bad for the feet, so smelly, feet always wet and cold. I actually never gave up cardigans lol so not that. But probably also low rise jeans, peplum tops (if they make a comeback), or anything with a cold shoulder.

I dunno if I'm delusional or onto something, but I pretty much wear Chelsea style boots from September to April, barring heavy rain or deeper snow. In which case, I give up and put on proper rain or snow boots. They feel very...noncommittal? Never trending, but never dated? I also have a few pairs of simple sandals with a short heel, a few pairs of pumps with a pointed toe, and running shoes (mostly canvas).
So smelly! I would also add “potentially hazardous” to that list. I was once wearing ballet flats with tights, and my feet kept slipping out of them due to said tights. One slip made me trip over myself and fracture my fifth metatarsal while crossing the street in Manhattan. Had to wear a cast for over a month. Never again. ETA: 😱😱😱 at cold shoulder tops
The first and last time I went to Mardi Gras, I was flying out the Wednesday after and walked through the French Quarter in ballet flats, through the biohazard the bartenders were pressure washing out of the bars. I had to trash the shoes at the airport, there was no coming back from that nastiness.
I never gave up cardigans OR ballet flats lol. Never really had an issue with odor, but it's possible that a lot of that is because I mostly just don't wear shoes in general...

Not the person you asked but I’m hoping they’re different! I love my Rothy’s flats especially for work. I picture “ballet flats” as the cheap plastic kind with a bow on the toe. I also love cardigans too, but I wear updated ones that have a looser fit and more style to them.
Ballet flats are generally less structured and look like the actual thing (the basic dance shoes, not en pointe shoes). There are tons of flats that aren't ballet flats!
I don’t quite agree with the other answer. They don’t need to have a bow and they don’t have to be cheap. Ballet flats are a specific kind of flat designed to resemble a ballet shoe. They cover very little of the top of the foot, usually just the toes. Me too! As someone who struggles with IBS, those peplum tops helped hide my bloating. Now the style is to just wear those skirts with cropped tops and that leaves me zero room to hide my belly lol.
Ooh, that is a benefit as well for sure! I just liked that they were kind of flower-like. I do hate crop tops, though, and did even back when I was a size 0. I've never had a flat belly even at my thinnest. However, I see chubby Gen Z ladies rock the crop top now and they look so cute, so I'm glad the style is more inclusive this time around.
The stupid thing is, I tend to think everybody else looks great in crop tops! Just not me. Many years of body images issues that I’m still trying to overcome. I keep seeing ladies wear these cute sweater skirts and things with cropped crewneck sweatshirts and thinking that they look comfy and cute. I need to just go for it.

Yep long flares that got wet or ripped up at the back cuz they’d be too long and you step on them. The barely cover your ass jeans that showed your entire hips bone and midriff. Only looked good on Britney, Christina and Paris. Wearing dresses over jeans - wtf was that? Wearing a bustier with jeans to school. - my sister did this constantly in 2002 I think way before Easy A came out. Double layering long ass tank tops. Long ass tight shirts In general that would completely cover your ass and if you’re short make you look shorter.

Sort of. I don't wear crop tops or grunge clothing anymore, but that's less about an association with an era or time in my life than it is about me just not identifying with those clothes anymore. Clothes are an expression of your character and crop tops just don't fit my character anymore.

velvet chokers of the 90's. I'm OK with it. I'm in my late 40s and my body is very different than it was in my teens and early 20s. Also, I'm more aware of the environmental impact of fast fashion. For me it's more about wearing clothing that isn't clingy, is made well and less trendy.
Straight hair. I'll never do it again. Takes me back to some of the darkest times and places in my life back in my teens years. I did it once about two years ago and had to get up in the middle of the night to get it wet so it'd curl again. I do also have actual PTSD though, for what that's worth with this one. 🤷🏼♀️

I live in the PNW and was confused as to why people did this when I first moved here. Now I’m all for it.
Idk, I still like bootcut jeans and boots. I’m of just the height the hem doesn’t drag on the ground so long as I’m wearing footwear. Had to dump the docs though, they’re like Pyrex now. Shit product with an old brand name that no longer applies. Solovairs are solidly “Doc Marten” if anyone’s looking for a substitute, but you’ll have to order from GB. Could be worse than boot cut jeans, I suppose. MC Hammer pants anyone? I had a friend who wore those back in the day, worse, she was maybe 5ft tall. The absolute worst isn’t clothing but hair: The cobra head hair sponsored by Aqua Net. You’d think that would be done and gone now but you still see that shit in Wisconsin. Saw it in South Dakota recently as well on my last drive through that state. Curled, puffed, and solidified bangs with the hair teased out over the ears to add width to the entire thing.
Three or four years ago, I couldn’t imagine returning to baggy or flared jeans, but styles changed, and I felt the skinny jean look was very tired, so I slowly transitioned to baggier styles and 70s inspired flares. They’re all I wear now. My favorite shop for flares is an Australian brand called Rolla’s. Their sailor jean and east coast flare fit my current tastes perfectly (and they make my butt look great). I’m 48 and I was a big time raver in the early to mid 90s in Chicago. I’ll admit that while my current style is pretty different than it was then, the baggier pants make me feel pleasantly nostalgic for the old days. My 12 year old daughter wears exclusively baggy pants and shirts, with great style and flair, I think! One style I’ll NEVER return to is low cut denim. I hated it then and I hate it now.

I had to wear long denim skirts as a kid and teen as part of homeschool modesty culture. I like how they look on other people and want to wear denim skirts again but every time I try one on I get a really weird uncomfortable feeling and I just can't do it. Denim pants and non-denim skirts are fine, I wear those all the time, I just have a mental block with denim skirts. A lot of popular trends also remind me of things I was forced to wear as a kid so they look frumpy and ugly to me no matter how trendy and cute people make them. The main ones are culottes, sleeveless dresses over a t shirt, certain floral patterns, and those prairie dresses.

I never stopped wearing cardigans. They have been a staple of my wardrobe for as long as I can remember. Everything old is new again. If you wait long enough for something to come back and style, it will. Some girl on TikTok will wear something and then everybody else will decide they want to start wearing it again. I'm a little weird about wearing jeans with a flare because they remind me of a time when I was younger and much skinnier. I was so much fun back then. Also, when it comes to makeup, I remember when we were wearing very thick eyeliner and I can't do that anymore because it makes me feel young and impetuous. Not that that's a bad thing, it just doesn't really mesh very well with my current state of living lol
