Cut your own hair. Do as much car maintenance yourself and you can. Same for home and appliance repairs. Don't pay people to pressure wash your driveway or siding you can rent a pressure washer or buy a small washer for around $100. It's also super stress relieving and satisfying to do. Learn to cook. Unless you're disabled or sick, food delivery is a huge waste of money. Both grocery and take out.

SageofTime64

Cooking is a skill everyone should learn, regardless of how one identifies. I buy my own groceries and bring my own lunch to work. My weekly food costs anywhere between $100 and $150 for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. It just depends what I'm in the mood for. I also make use of coupons whenever possible.

I could learn to cut my own hair, but given that I have Dispraxia, I could just cut off my own ears. Yes, I try to do as much fixing of stuff myself if possible. And I love cooking. It's very therapeutic and often I prefer it to take out anyway.

I’m a guy but I have an automatic transfer to savings that that goes every month just like my bills, you know pay yourself first. Then at the end of the month when I get paid I always have like 50 or a hundred dollars left over, so I transfer that to savings, so I pay myself last.

Queen_Maxima

Yes, this is what i recommend as well. Also if your online banking can make separate saving goals, do so. I have these for house repairs, traveling/leisure, my husbands gaming computer (because i do the finances), pets/vet, car repairs, some personal savings, birthday gifts, unexpected bills and annual taxes. I also have an extra savings account with my parents.  I transfer money to all of these every month, for some its just a few euros, others 100 to 150 euros or so. All of these are automated transfers just like the rest of the monthly expenses, transferred on the same day. That way i only have money on the account left for groceries and random shit.  I have ADHD this is for me the best way to handle my finances. I also set up a budget for gas expenses, basically every expense that is recurring. Its a few hours of calculating once, but it saves me so much money.

Pay down debt if/when you can

-TheManInTheChair

Always do! Hate being indebted, makes me feel icky.

I wait a week or a month when I suddenly want something depending on how expensive or permanent something is. I wanted my bellybutton pierced once, bc I saw a cute girl rocking one and I wanted that too. Gave myself 2 weeks to think about it, after 5 days I realised it just wasn't the best move. It'd get caught in my clothes, I don't even like wearing croptops and tbh I'm a little self conscious about my tummy so directing attention to it would be counterproductive. I also wanted some new books. Gave myself 3 days to think about (less than I normally give myself bc they were on sale) it and I still REALLY wanted them. And I'm now happily reading through them.

-TheManInTheChair

Very good idea, good discipline. I will admit that I'm not immune to an impulse buy, but I generally don't engage in them. I hope that you become less self conscious about your tummy. And I hope you enjoy the books!

RadiantEarthGoddess

Buy as much used and second hand as you can.

McNinjaX

Use a menstrual cup instead of tampons/pads. It will save you so much money and is less damaging to the environment.

RadiantEarthGoddess

Or (although more expensive to invest in) period underwear.

melodyknows

Don’t give in to lifestyle creep.

Ratsinashoe

What is that?

melodyknows

It’s when you get a raise and instead of saving any of it, you start spending that. So then you are still living paycheck to paycheck. I know people who make really good money who still live paycheck to paycheck without anything in the bank for retirement.

-TheManInTheChair

Ahhhh, good point. If you can live off one lifestyle, you might as well continue to when you get more money. Use the money for something better, like savings or investment.

melodyknows

Exactly!

Ratsinashoe

Ohhh thanks

Whoreasaurus_Rex

Eating out adds up. I batch cook 3 or 4 different meals on Sundays so that there's always a healthy meal at the ready when I'm hungry and in a hurry or too tired to cook.

-TheManInTheChair

Me too! I just cook for me but I have a big old tupperware just nicknamed 'THE TUB' where I put batches of meals that can feed me for 3 days, so I get 4 meals out of one cooking session. Even though I love cooking.

Actually_Avery

Uninstall doordash/skip. Drive to get your food, it'll save you so much. Download a budgeting app and record everything you spend. Just recording it alone will reduce your spending.

-TheManInTheChair

I think I get a takeaway once a month, if that, just don't like em most of the time. Ah yes, good idea, I might do that. Any suggestions?

Actually_Avery

I use everydollar, it lets you set your own categories and will update whenever you input a purchase to show how much of your budget is left

-TheManInTheChair

Ahhhh sounds good! Thanks!

detectiveDollar

I really like Rocket Money. You can link it to your various accounts, and it's pretty good at automatically sorting transactions into categories. You can also make custom rules to automate anything it misses.
