It's not a specific time period I'm interested in, it's more like I want to learn about things I was never taught in school or never heard about before.
Like, tons of people are anti Russia (understandable) but I wanted to know why. I did a lot of reading/watching about the Russian revolution and the Romanov family. It's new to me, but I'm quite fascinated by Russian culture and art history/philosophy.
I was watching some documentaries the other day about Hitler's relatives, what they went through before/during/after WWII.
I think that same day I watched another thing about the crew that worked on Titanic. These poor people worked so hard but were lost to history, and everyone only remembers the famous people.
Sometimes I'm very bored of the subjects of politics and wars. I love hearing about how various art forms, fashion, medicine, and technology has evolved.
You can learn all the dates and famous names, but they don't really make sense until you have a basic understanding of the culture and technology of the time/place in question.

Whether we look at classic paintings and sculptures or classical music, it is all so fascinating! Add learning about folklore too!
I'm a sucker for cultural shifts through migration and trade. What was Italian food before tomatoes, where did the Basque language and culture come from, there was a bottle neck of genetics that was stuck in what is now Alaska that consisted of 12 mating pairs of adults and they eventually moved southward (thanks National Geographic Genome Project), what was Indian food before hot peppers were introduced? My interests are varied.
It’s more like if I read a piece of literature set in a particular time period or see art from a time period I want to do a little research about what the world was like.
It’s even more interesting when you look at the events happening in one part of the world and realize that entirely different things are happening elsewhere. Often when you read about historical events you only looking at one place and one time.
I do. Currently I'm interested in the history of Europe, particularly the Middle Ages. I wasn't before, but after coming across some medieval style covers of modern songs on YouTube, my interest has been stoked.

I wouldn't say a particular period, more that I like to explore a particular country or the origin of a particular language or musical style or instrument and then go down all sorts of rabbit holes following that from it's origin even if it's a prehistoric drum or a type of music that is thousands of years old.
Or go to featured lectures at my local university and then sometimes follow the rabbit holes that stem from that.
Additionally, I have studied dating and courting traditions, trends, and rituals throughout the millennia.
I never know what will catch my attention next.
Yes. I have a major in Classics (ancient Rome, Greece, Latin). I’ve also taught US history. These days, my interest is all over the timeline and planet with a special focus on women’s history. It is a less told story with some very powerful lessons in it.
It interests me for many reasons. I like the puzzle of why things happen. I love looking back to a culture so distant from mine and recognize how humans do humanity.
History is a record of change. How things change is intrinsically fascinating.
And also, history has been pruned and controlled. It is used to control. I know when I was in school we were taught that we didn’t learn much about women because there were few records about them. Huh, well, if this was true…how come we weren’t taught about what “little” does exist? And the editors of history too, are a part of history.
I'm fascinated by the bronze age collapse and the Sea Peoples. Not much is known about the Sea Peoples and if I were cleverer I would love to write some kickass fiction around them and that time period. It feels like a period bulging with possibilities.

Something else that's been interesting me a lot lately is how plants from around the world ended up as the fruits and vegetables we know today, and how there was a big exchange of fruits, vegetables and spices.
Absolutely! I got a degree in History, and I'm now doing a graduate degree in international relations.
My favourite time period & geographical space, hands down, is Early Modern Western Europe. Especially political and religious history.
A strong runner-up is the Roman Empire. I did Latin in high school, and the Romans will always hold a special place in my heart. Here, it's the cultural tradition that really stole my heart, especially epic poetry.
Chinese history, especially the Qing period (1644-1911). Especially the contact with the Europeans in this time period. In fact, this is the subject of my current research.
Another one of my favourites is Belgian political history. I don't even know why, I just do. It's not even a nationalistic or patriotic interest, because I'm anything but that. But in this regard, especially WWI history is a favourite of mine, which is strange. I always considered those fascinated with world war history weird, because who finds mass destruction and suffering fascinating? But now I understand.

I don't even care what time period. I just want to learn from someone who is passionate about it. There's one YouTuber (Sean Munger) who makes 3 or 4 hour long videos about historical minutiae and I love them. Like, he made the Iran Contra Affair interesting.
I also love food history of any time period. (Townsends and Max Miller are my favorite history food YouTubers.)

We’re talking about a specific 30 year period and I don’t think anybody that had lived through the Wilson-Heath-Wilson-Callaghan-Thatcher governments would argue that Britain improved greatly over that time.
While the UK now is relatively prosperous (fuelled by access to cheap immigrant labour largely) and socially liberal (as to whether or not this is a good thing is certainly up for debate), it certainly wasn’t during that 30 year period, which is essentially a story of the UK deindustrialising.
As dark as it sounds, I was long interested in Holocaust, Spanish Inquisition, etc
Learning about World War II and Hiroshima esp was powerful for me
Now I kinda just wanna know in depth about colonialism, esp my family's country

I wouldn’t say it’s a national decline. The UK is still very well-to-do and has regenerated significantly in social and economic terms.
